  • Sun v40z wont boot from external DVD/RW drive

Hello folks, I am banging my head on the wall with a Sun v40z that will not boot from an external dvd drive. I want to install Win2k3 Server on it. Any ideas.

The v40z is an x86 platform, and thus has a BIOS controlling the boot order and boot devices. You'll have to attach a VGA display and keyboard, power on the system, then hit F2 or F10 to enter Setup (it should say what magic key it is at startup time, just after the SUN logo splash screen comes up).
Enter the BIOS, and go to the menu for boot devices, making sure you select CD-ROM as a boot device before your regular boot disks or network boot devices. Then Save and Exit, restart the system, and it should see and use the CD for the boot device.
A caveat is that some early revisions of the BIOS's, especially ones on early x86 platforms like the v40z, will not recognize an external device as a boot device. You may have to download the latest BIOS, install it (uses a floppy, IIRC!), set the correct BIOS options again (they get wiped out when the BIOS is reinstalled), and then try the external CD boot again.
If this fails, you would be forced to install and internal CD device. This is not difficult, but is obviously more hassle than an external device.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro Wont Boot from Retail 10.6.3 DVD

Just like the title says.  It wont boot off the retail 10.6 disk I got a couple weeks ago.
I think my EFI partition might have been corrupted...so I want to repartition the HD and reinstall the OS but the computer wont boot from the DVD.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Alexander,
If your MBP shipped with an OS later than 10.6.3, it won't boot from that disc. Use the install disc that shipped with your MBP.

  • My macbook air wont boot up. Just beeps every 5 seconds and a white light flashes on front of keyboard

My macbook air wont boot up. Just beeps every 5 seconds and a white light flashes on front of keyboard

That normally indicates an issue with system memory. The startup sequence can't complete the boot due to a memory issue. Take it in for service.

Yes, junker thumb drives pour like rain in the market.
Which makes are working on your Air, and which arent?

I do not know about Disk Warrior but if you have a compatible OSX on an external HDD you certainly can boot the MBP.  Use startup manager:

    Ciao.

  • Wont boot from CD after hard drive installation.

I just installed a new hard drive in an iBook 700mhz. I expected the system folder missing message, as the hard drive was blank. However now it wont boot from CD when I hold down c on boot. Also when I hold down option, I get a circular arrow and an arrow pointing to the right but no real options. I reset the PRAM but that didn't help. Any one have an idea?

Over the years I've seen some optical drive failures that were actually being caused by the hard drive. The first thing I'd suspect given a new drive is that you didn't quite seat the I/O cable. The second is that the HD is defective. A couple times everything seemed fine and when the drive was placed on the bench and after formatting it there and reinstalling it the drive and computer were happy.

  • G4 AGP wont boot from a DVD

    Hi,
I'm trying to boot my G4 AGP (combo drive) from a OSX install DVD and it wont reconise it. It shows up and checks out ok when i'm booted into Tiger. But when i go to boot off the DVD it wont, it does however boot fine off CD's.
When I hold down the option key during boot it doesnt display the DVD, but if i put a CD in instead it shows up fine.
I have tried another Superdrive and it still did the same thing.
I've tried booting off the DVD on a Macbook Pro and an iBook and it worked fine, so the DVD is bootable.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi! Is the disc a retail version or one for another computer such as a Macbook? If it's not retail it's not going to work. Tom

  • My macbook air wont boot up past the loading screen. UPDATE

My 2008 macbook air will turn on, and then go to the apple screen with the loading wheel, but after a few minutes of loading it just shuts down...
Here is an update of the problem after i messed around with it for a bit.
I start up the macbook while holding Command+s
Then it brings up the prompt.
    I then type: /sbin/fsck -fy
It then outputs a message saying:
    disk0s2: I/0 error.
    Invalid sibling link
    (4, 42746)
**The volume macintosh HD could not be repaired.
/dev/rdisk0s2 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8
After that, i type in: /sbin/mount -uw /
    Then I type: exit
It runs the logout scripts and then immedietly boots up fine, like the computer has no problem.
It works fine like this, but i dont want to have to do those steps every time I want to use my macbook...
Any help on how to fix this?

I have a similar problem. Not sure you're on here (since the post is really old) but did you manage to work it out? How?
    My thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19007548#19007548
My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
    http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
    I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?

  • The Air cannot boot from external dvd-drive

    Hi!
I am using my rev.2 air, 1.86 Mhz prosessor, 120 GB HDD, leopard 10.5.7 with a Samsung writemaster external dvd-writer, but I am having problems booting from it.
When I try to boot (pressing option) I can choose the disc and the applesymbol will appear, but the spinning wheel below does not, and the screen just stay the same until I cut the power.
I have tried to boot both the original OS X-disc and Windows 7 (both through boot camp and normal restart) with the same result.
    Any help will be...well, helpfull

Not sure if this will help - but whenever I need to boot from an install disc on my MBA - i turn on the MBA and hold the 'c' key until i hear it loading the disc. that's how I boot off of optical discs... worth a try?

  • My MacBook Pro wont boot from CD

For some reason the factory installed OSX instance on my MacBook pro has corrupted telling me each time I try to boot it that its encountered and error and I'll need to switch my mac off and back on again... OK...
So after switching my mac off and back on again about 400 times I begin to get the idea that maybe that error message isnt as intelligent as I might like it to be..
So i've attempted to re-install OSX 10.4.6 from the Install DVD i got with the MacBook pro... However I cant get the laptop to boot from this CD... I've tried: a straight turn off turn back on and the cd spins up but then boots from my default boot device.. I've also tried holding down the C key while the laptop boots, again the cd spins up but no luck.
Please please please can anyone point me towards what im doing wrong.. I'm a real mac newbie.. And while i love my MacBook pro this is getting really frustrating.. :o(
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   BootCamp installed

If you have an open firmware password, delete it. It will not boot off anything but HD with OF password. Or at least thats what it was for me.

  • MacBook Pro wont boot from CD

I just purchased an used MacBook Pro and I lost the password (I had it written down and lost the paper before I could change it). I tried to boot from my copy of Tiger so I could reset the password but it wouldn't boot from the CD. I also tried holding down alt/option and only the hard drive showed up. Any suggestions or options?

You cannot boot an Intel Mac from a retail version of Tiger. You can only boot it from the original discs that came with the computer (two DVD with gray labels appropriately marked.) If the seller did not provide you with the discs then you have been short-changed on your purchase and should contact the seller and insist upon receiving them. Alternatively, you can contact AppleCare and purchase replacements or you can purchase a retail copy of Leopard.

  • Wont boot from restore dvd's or new copy of Leopard!!

Well I am witts end I have an isight that I installed a new hard drive on and will not boot from the restore dvd's, or a new leopard disc(now i am out 130). It will how ever boot from drive genuis(new drive is fine) or restore dvd's from a new iMac and it will tell me that disc's are not compatible(duh just checking to see if it was a bad optical drive) any suggestions or ideas are welcome!!!

"Well I am witts end I have an isight that I installed a new hard drive on"
The iSight models are not user rerpairable except for RAM installations. All other repairs should be done at a repair shop. Apple does not even supply repair manuals (DIY) for the public for the iSight models.
If you installed the HD yourself, its possible it was not installed correctly.
    Just a thought..............

  • Power mac g5 wont boot from install dvd

i have a g5 power mac i had to replace the hard drive when i try to boot from the disc it freezes on the gray screen with the apple im use the retail dvd for the ppc can anyone help

Hello! You may not be waiting long enough if there's been a new drive installed as the OS on the dvd will be looking at the new drive to see if it's been formatted. It may take 10-15 minutes or longer to fully boot from the install disc. Tom

  • Wont Boot From Install DVD

I need some help - I just brought home a brand new 27" iMac. It boots just fine from the internal HD. I need to do a complete Time Machine restore, as this iMac is a replacement for one that they can't seem to fix. Anyway, I load the Snow Leopard DVD, it pops up the OS X FInder icon, I tell it to go to utilities, and that I want to restore the entire hard drive. It then reboots - sort of. The DVD does some stuff, then the machine sits there with the gray apple logo on it. Been there now for 15 minutes with nothing happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated....
    Jim

The first thing I would suggest:
    - Shut down the iMac with the disc still in the drive
    - Once it is shut down, Press the power button and hold down the C key on the keyboard in order to boot from the optical drive. (Hold until Apple Logo appears)
    - Once disc loads, select a language and click the arrow
    - The installer will prepare
    - Up on the menu bar, click Utilities, then Restore from Backup
    - Follow on-screen instructions
After that you should be good to go! Hope everything works out.
