Macbook airport card and antenna

i have 2 macbook c2d,one has the 2 antenna airport card and the wifi is very slow, the other with 3 i presume is n version, but i had to swap the screens over, now the mabook i use has a 3 antenna card but only 2 antenna from the monitor, would i be better of using the 3 antenna version but ust plugging 2 in and which 2?

I can't help with tracking down the "T" shaped antenna that plugs into the back of the G5, or an equivalent, but I can tell you that the wire that connects to the Airport card in my G5 disappears around the back of the motherboard.
It may have a metal ring on the other end but I can't see it.
I'm assuming you didn't buy the G5 new, because you are missing of the "T" shaped antenna which is supplied with the computer, so I'm guessing whoever had the G5 before you pulled the airport card out before disconnecting the antenna cable and ripped it from its mounting.
My guess is the metal ring is used to attach it somehow.

  • Can I pick up wireless (card and antenna questions)

    Hello mac community,
I bought a June 2004 G5 (dual 2.5ghz) back in Aug of 2004 and at the time, I had the external antenna that came with it, but I have since lost it. I never used the computer for wireless, nor did I ever need to, and now I'm selling it but my buyers are asking if it's capable of wireless.
I don't know if it is without the antenna, nor do I know if the stock 2.5ghz G5 came with a wireless card in it. Does this mac need a card or would telling them to buy another antenna work? I looked at this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1305 to try to find where the card would be (in the front, under a fan, above the RAM slots right?) and didn't see a card in the slot that I know of, though I'm not good with computers.
So can this mac get wireless without a card, but with an antenna? Do I have to have a card? And did the G5 stock 2.5ghz have a card? I never removed the card if it did.
    Thanks guys

My answers assume you're referring to wireless internet, aka Airport Extreme, 802.11a/b/g/n. In any event, most of this applies to Bluetooth as well.
So can this mac get wireless without a card, but with an antenna?
    No.
Do I have to have a card?
Yes. And range will be very short (at best) without the antenna.
And did the G5 stock 2.5ghz have a card?
No. Airport and Bluetooth were both optional.
So, it's capable of wireless, but needs the card and antenna to do so. If someone doesn't want to use the official Apple Airport card and antenna ,available here (card) and here (antenna)). An external USB wireless dongle, such as this one can also be used. The USB dongles are generally the only way to support the fastest wireless connection, 802.11n.

  • Broken airport card and hard drive on MacBook Pro and can't go to recovery with LAN.

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro 13" (early-2011)'s hard drive has broken, and I bought a Kingston 120GB SSDNow instead.
Earlier, the airport card and cable has been broken too.
Are there other ways I can use LAN to recover my mac? It wants me to use wifi, but the airport card is broken...
If so, why does it only want to use Wifi instead of LAN?
LAN is like the extra parachute just in case, or the extra octopus regulator in scuba diving.

Is your model on the list? Did you ever upgrade its firmware? If not, then all you can do is start by booting from your Snow Leopard DVD and installing Snow Leopard on your SSD. Be sure to first partition and format the SSD for use with OS X. Once you install Snow Leopard you can download and install the firmware update for future needs.

  • Airport card and memory

hi im looking into puttin an airport card in to my mac g4 the lamp desktop and was wondering if i need extra memory and what osx it would run on
    hope someone ca

    Hello Aldric, welcome to discussions.
It's quite suspicious that your Airport card and one of your memory modules have suddenly "disappeared" at the same time.
This could certainly indicate a hardware issue, but I won't speculate as to what caused it. Sure, a power surge could do this... have you had one recently?
I would try taking the memory module, and the airport card out of your system, and then re-install them.
If your situation does not improve, then you should probably take your machine to an authorized Apple service center.

  • Macbook airport extreem and brother printer/scanner DCP-330C

I have macbook airport extreem and brother printer/scanner DCP-330C and everything works fine.
    I can print wireless.
The only thing that irritates me is, when I start my macbook I first see a screen with MFL-ProSuite, I quit then a screen with connect with USB, I quit and then I see a small blue screen.
Is there a way to get rid of these things, so I can start directly with the things I want to do.
    Thanks for the reply.
    Frank

That is something that has to do with the brother software. Doesn't have anything to do with the airport base station.
I would try and Contact brother to see about disabling it.
What I think , is probably because the printer is on the airport not the computer so brothers software is getting confused.
See about deleting just the software and not the drivers. That is if you dont need the software.

  • Airport Card and Pismo

    Hello!
Picked up a used Pismo in great shape. I have a spare working Airport card and installed it. It did not work. So I erased the drive that had 10.2.3 and installed 10.4 with all updates to 10.4.8. Still does not work. I took the PowerBook apart and examined the card dock pins, cable and mobo connection. Physically they all look fine.
I am pretty avid and mac hardware repair. I have a couple Pismo motherboards and stuff in storage. Before I go taking all this apart again and swapping stuff out, could I be doing something wrong here?
I see only two sources of potential fault. The motherboard or the card. Any experts hear of Pismos having Airport issues? (all other buses are fine, firewire, UBS, etc) Any report of Airport cards dying? (I dont have another spare to test)
    Thanks!

    marco,
Did you select AirPort in System Prefs > Network > Network Port Configurations?
If you have the Hardware Test CD that came with Pismos or have another Mac that can burn the AHT, download it here and see what it says about AirPort.

  • Will disabling wifi cut power to the wifi card and antenna system?

I have searched the web and even called Apple to have this question answered, nothing found online and apple support kept changing their answer. I would like to keep using the AirPort extreme with ethernet but disable the wifi. I know that turning off wifi on a Mac will cut the power to the AirPort card and stop it from emitting any kind of signal (at least this is what I have been told many times). I am wondering if this goes for the AirPort Extreme as well.
I do not have any kind of equipment to measure signal emissions so I just went off of power readings. I do not have the exact readings here with me at the moment but with wifi on and disabled the extreme uses the exact same mount of power. I know this is hardly accurate but it's all I could do
Does anyone have more detailed/technical information or the equipment to test and verify if the radio is actually disabled when wifi is turned off in AriPort Utility? Apple support told me that when wifi is disabled it will continue to broadcast a signal with the same strength, just not one that can be picked up (no name etc), that it would only stop if the power was cut completely. Then I was told, as soon as wifi is disabled there is only a very weak scattered signal left and then I was told there was no signal at all. (Amazing what kind of answers you can get if you just epeat the same question several times).
    Any help appreciated.

Although I do not have a spectrum analyser.. I do have an excellent ubiquiti router which will produce a spectrum which is somewhat useful at least at 2.4ghz.
I have reduced the wireless routers around me to absolute min.
And I can only do this on 2.4ghz..
So this shows a dlink from a neighbour and the TC sitting near the ubiquiti.
Then I can do a spectrum analysis.
This is with wireless on. You can see the waterfall display of plenty of signal in the channel 6 area.
Now a spectral analysis with wireless off.
You can clearly see there is now no signal at channel 6.. so wireless off has turned off the RF on the TC.
    Hope that helps.

  • MacBook Airport card has lost its IP address and won't connect to my network

The Airport card on my MacBook has lost its IP address and will not connect to my network. It worked fine until about two or three days ago. Network Diagnostics says that the Airport now has a self-assigned IP number and will not connect to the Internet. I can't find any info anywhere that tells me how to restore the IP number, and I don't get how it can have a self-assigned number and not connect. I have AT&T U-Verse, and my iMac desktop and two iPhone 4s connect with little difficulty. The MacBook is three years old, and AppleCare just expired two months ago. I'm still running 10.6.8 on both machines. I found an article saying that sometimes DHCP leases expire, but my desktop still works ifne, and I've had both connected to the same network since the same time. The artcicle said that more than one machine can share an IP address, so I wanted to try to enter the desktop IP address into the laptop, but I can't find a way to do so, either. Any thoughts?

Have you tried making a New Location for each yet? The Automatic one get confused easily.
Some "nix" to try when it happens also...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
Sometimes having an all OFF Location can help, thanks to Gnarlodious...

  • MacBook Airport Card Temperature/Speed

Macbook Penryn 2.4 GHz. iStat Pro says 157 F/68 C. Constantly. On the other hand the bottom does not feel that hot at all. Top cover is slightly warm, most of the time I will not even notice. After I disconnect the power adapter and instntly connect it back again, the temp goes down to 130 F/54 C in about 10 sec and gradually in matter of days it will go back up to 155 F and stay there. So I wonder if a) something is wrong with the power inside the MB or b) the sensor is totally messing it up and iStat Pro is reading the wrong info. I don't believe the problem is with the Airport Card. I already replaced 2 MBs on my third one. Still the same thing...AppleCare has no idea why this is happening. I replaced the macboook once. I am not going crazy about that, but I have another MB that I purchased November last year. It is 2.2 GHz and everything elese is exactly the same (i.e. software installed, processes, memory, hdd..). In exactly the same conditions the temp stays at 119F/48C. Additionally the download speed of my new MB (wireless) is at least 2 times slower than my relatively old MB. Tested this on 3 2.4 GHz MBs with the same poor download results. Upload is exactly the same.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input. Just wanted to make sure it is not something out of ordinary. I moved my "old" Santa Rosa 2.2 GHz MB to draft-N and it seems that it runs at much lower temp than Penryn. I have not seen thou the CPU temp to be affected...That's why I am a little bit surprised...My understanding is that there is no Airport Card temp censor and the calculations are hypothetical and NOT precise...

  • Broken airport card and i can't dish out £220 to fix it

Hi, my airport card has just broken, the range has been halved so at the moment i have to hug my wireless box to get signal. As the title says i cant afford the repair, its an old computer out of warrenty and im a student without surplus cash. I was wondering does anyone know any cheaper ways off fixing this? wireless USB sticks that are compatible with older macbooks?
    Many thanks

The Asus WL-167g wireless USB adapter works with my old iBook as well as my new MacBook. I tried it just to be sure, although of course I use the Airport card on the MacBook. If you use it, remember to turn off Airport.
The Asus WL-167g costs $17 at New Egg. You can download the Mac driver here:

  • MacBook Airport card: Where is it?

My daughter's MacBook Airport has ceased to function. One of the trouble shooting recommendations is to re-seat the card but I cannot find where the card is so that I can re-seat it. Does anyone have instructions about how to get to the Airport card?

First of all, thanks, but it does look extremely complicated and I don't think I'll try it.
Lemon and Falk are extraordinary. My favorite Great Race scene is Boracho, although the early sequences of Professor Fate trying to top the Great Leslie are the most hilarious slapstick scenes except possibly Blake's other great character Inspector Jacques Clouseau.
    Anyway thanks for the help.

  • EMac 2005? - Airport Card and Bluetooth

    Hi
I recently bought an eMac second-hand off of a high-school, and wanted to upgrade it a bit. I've already bumped the ram up to 2GB, and I pulled the whole thing apart and swapped the CD drive for a DVD writer (I had to go through about a couple I had lying around before I got one that worked perfectly), and installed a new HDD.
Now I come to the Wireless. As far as I know, I need an airport extreme card, and just slide it in and attach the antenna cord. The trouble is, there are different types for different eMacs, and I am having trouble identifying my eMac. I found this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2395), but the last 3 digits of my serial number didn't match ANY of the ones listed there - the last 3 digits are T8J. Inside the CD-Drive flap, it also says 'EMC 2057', 'EMAC 17CRT/1.25GHz/256/40/CD' and '200-240VAC,1.75A,50-60HZ'. Checking the Specification pages (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP44), I'm pretty sure that the eMac is a 2005 EDU CD model, but am still unsure. What wireless card do I need? can I get a specific part number, not just a 'Airport Extreme Card' or similar moniker?
Also, I've seen in a few places that the eMac could be configured with a bluetooth module, but the Apple specs page said it had to be factory-built in. Is this true, or can I install one regardless? (maybe find it on eBay?)
    Thanks!

    Hey nuke,
bought an eMac second-hand off of a high-school..I pulled the whole thing apart and swapped the CD drive for a DVD writer.. installed a new HDD.
Since you bought it from a high school it would be an educational model and probably didn't have blue tooth installed.
Here's the part numbers for originals (from service source):
    "Bluetooth Board
    922-6201
    Bluetooth Antenna (Not Shown)
    922-6402"
I also agree with the other two responders that the installation of the Airport Extreme takes some wiggling.

  • Airport card and the 3 wires

Hi there: I have just installed the airport card in my Mac Pro dual 4 core. I saw that there are 3 wires marked 1, 2 and 3.
As the cards can accept only 2 of them which ones have I to connect? And in which order (Top/bottom) Thanks a lot in advance for your help!!!!!!!!
    Greetings
    Fabrizio

    Fabrizio,
I wrote in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9343432):
    =============
As far as I know installing the AirPort card is not supposed to be done by customers themselves (and so you may void warranty when breaking anything - although installing the card is pretty easy).
The documentation I saw for the AirPort Exteme card said: "connect antenna wires #1 and #3 (either way is good) - #2 not used". This is what I did and it seems to work pretty well.

    Good luck,

A Mac with an original Airport card will work perfectly with the Airport Express - the only requirement is that the Mac is running a minimum of MacOS 10.3 in order to be able to configure the device.
