Macbook airport keeps disconnecting

I have a first gen macbook pro retina running on 10.8.3.  I have been having this issue of the wifi dropping in and out ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  It's really frustrating.  I called apple and couldn't offer me any help since I'm no longer under warranty.   I've noticed it happen no matter if its my internet at home or the internet at a local starbucks it never fails to drop out on me!  I've tried removing the wifi networks and adding it back on....restarting the router, turning the airport on and off cures it for a second or two and then its back to disconnecting.... Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Jesselyn87,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. The best way is to troubleshoot the issue with the Airport card but using the following article. It does say for Lion but the troubleshooting steps will be the same for Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8).

Also this article is helpful to make sure it isn’t something that is just isolated in your user.

  • Airport keep disconnecting every few minutes

    Hi,
I don't know why, but my airport keeps disconnecting every few minutes, although it reconnects after that.
I'm sure there's no problem with my router since other PCs in my home are fine.
It's totally fine when I use my windows in the macbook (via bootcamp).
Anyone has the same problem or anyone knows the solution?
    Thanks.

I've had this issue for about a week and it has made my Macbook nearly impossible to use for anything other than local disk work.
Last night I tried running the standalone upgrade and it worked beautifully, however, upon booting up this AM I'm back to square one, constantly dropping the connection, ran the standalone update again and back in business with no drops.
While this is appears to be my temp workaround I don't want to be doing this on a daily basis.
HELLO APPLE what is the deal ?

The current fix is to turn off sleep mode or use an Ethernet cable.

  • Why does my macbook pro keep disconnecting from the internet?

For whatever reason my Macbook pro 15in keeps disconnecting from the internet everytime it goes to sleep. And sometimes when I wake it up, I have to turn wifi on and off a couple times to get it to detect the right signal. This does not happen with my playstation or my phone so it has to be a problem with the Macbook itself. Can anyone give me any information on how to fix this problem? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello, amal111.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that I would recommend going through when experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity issues.  Also, make sure all firmware updates have been processed on the router and the settings have been adjusted to the recommended settings in the second article below.

  • My macbook pro keeps disconnecting from my airport

Hello Guys. So I am from Europe..Last summer i bought from America a Macbook Pro 13 mid 2014 and an Iphone 6. Two weeks ago i updated my products so i bought an Airport Express...(2)Everything was great(3) for one week...I was very happy(4) with my internet...After 1 week (5)everything was gone...It s been(6 and waiting)  2 weeks since i`ve tried everything...(still wainting for 6) I meaaaan everything...i`m gonna say immediatly what everything means..So i have connected to that airport my macbook,my iphone 6 and a Lenovo windows laptop (7)..The Lenovo has no issues...the internet is flying...but on the macbook pro and  iphone 6 the internet is dead(8) (9). if i try to connect to another wifi...i have no issue...
So my mac its impossible to have a problem if i can stay connected to another wifi,my ISP cable shouldn`t have any problem if my Lenovo can stay connected to the wifi(17), and last option is the aiport...but the aiport is 3 weeks old..sooo...
The nu(10)mbers in (11) that i keep writing between the words are the disconnections.:( yep..it`s that bad..(12)
    Everything:
    - i turned off/on the wifi on mac
    - i powered off/on the airport (13) express
    - i changed the cable from the internet
    - i deleted my wifi and created a new one after (14) (15)restarting
    - i change my location
    - i renew everything(16)
    - i changed the airport on every , single , channel...13 channels for the 2.4 and 4 for the 5 ghz
    - i did that thing with SMC..macbook closed and (18) command + option + esc.
    - (19) (20) i closed the bluetooth off/on...its off everytime
    - everything up to date. the mac the aiport the iphone
All of those and nothing..nooothing...It`s very annoying...I did everything i could find on the internet...
    (21)(22)
Please? Please tell me what to do...:(

Hi I have a link for troubleshooting yosemite wifi problems. I don' t know if this helps with Iphone .I don't use Iphone so I'm no good on that.http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/

  • HT4628 After installing the new OS from apple (10.8.2) my macbook pro keeps disconnecting from the internet.  I am connecting with an Airport Extreme and while it shows I am connected, every 20-45 seconds its searching for a wireless connection.  Any sugg

I guess I posted my question as a title but that is my issue.  My airport is connected via wireless yet it keeps searching for a wireless connection, hence I am experiencing bad latency and disconnection issues.  Anyone know a solution?

I have the same problem. And in my case it happens when i transfer "large" files over the WiFi. When i send an MP3 filer over Skype i loose connection. When i transfer updates between my iPhone 5 / iPad 3 and iMac with Mountain Lion i loose connection. When i have a video conference i loose connection. You get the idea.
There is usually like 30 people using their own router on the 2.4 GHz band near by. None on the 5 GHz band which i use. But when my WiFi freezes on ML i can only see my own router. And i am also connected to it. But all my neighbors WiFi routers are now invisble to me. My network stalled.
What i do is that i disconnect my WiFi and then reconnect it again. Thank fixes it. But all my transfers and what not has been dropped. And i have to start all over - and the WiFi will stall again.
While my WiFi is frozen on the iMac with ML i have no problem using the same router on the same 5 GHz band with my iPhone 5 or iPad 3.
Downgrading the AirPort Extreme to 7.6.1 from 7.6.3 helped a bit. Now i only loose connection a few times each day.
It is a software error in ML i am sure of. A driver maybe. But i am suspecting that it is either a speed-sync error or an energy saving error. Like the network card turns of in the middle of a file transfer to save enrgy - maybe.
When i stream movies from my iMac to my Apple TV or  3 there is no problem at all. It is so odd.

  • 11" MacBook Air keeps disconnecting, losing IP address from WiFi

I just bought a brand new MacBook Air last week, installed all the updates on it from my home wireless network. I then try to use it on another wireless network, and sometimes it will connect, but then it always drops the connection and won't reconnect. Sometimes resetting the router helps for a little while, but then the same thing happens. I've hooked Windows XP laptops and an iPad up to this wireless network and they do not drop their connection like this. The Air is fully updated per Software Update, has the firewall turned on, and has a bluetooth mouse in use. I set IPv6 to off in the Network preferences. The wireless device is a Linksys 610N, but its set to 2.4GHz since the iPad can't do Wireless N.
What can I try to resolve this? Most settings on the router are set to their defaults or auto, so not sure if its a specific setting the Air doesn't like or what.

Just for information of the thread, I have a new mid-2011 MBAir (4.2) with Lion which also experienced this problem straight out of the box. As described here, I have the same symptoms of appearing to be connectedd but not being able to send/receive. The only way I can resolve this is to disconnect and reconnect to the access point. Sometimes (like now) that will be ok for 30 minutes or more. Other times, it will drop out straight away again.
As I've posted in one of the other threads, the thing that annoys me about this is that there are so many forum threads dedicated to this all over the internet (for many years), but there appears no action from Apple on it - preferring to ignore it's customers problems. While I've been a Apple user for a few years, this is my first Mac purchase and it has left a bitter taste in my mouth to say the least. I've been using a MBPro for a couple of years and never had any such problem (in the same network).
Also for information of some of the other posters - I experience this on a 'G' access point, so the issue is not isolated to N/G switching. Additionally, 'N' WiFi in itself does not necessarily have shorter range through walls - 'N' operates on two frequency bands: 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, while 'G' operates on the 2.4Ghz only. While certainly the 5Ghz band should get poorer penetration through walls and other obstacles, the advanced technology used in 'N' WiFi should more than be able to make up for that - it uses very sophisticated muti-path signal recombining and other tricks which should make it effectively more sensitive and able to sustain much higher data rates despite significant signal attenuation. Depending on the particular obstacles and range you're talking about though, each case can be different.
I've done some network captures on my problematic MBAir, and at other points in my network to see if I can identify the problem. Once I get the phantom dropout happening I notice that my Air's WiFi can still receive network traffic normally, as it sees all transmissions from other network devices around it. Also, it thinks it is still connected to the network (as it should - the network manager shows an active connection) and it tries to send packets onto the network when you make particular requests. It appears to me that these packets never actually make it out into the network, and it just keeps re-trying until it eventually times-out.
While I accept other causes are possible, this leads me to believe that the problem is with the Broadcom wireless driver. As for how the same problem can be faced by many different generations of Mac - I would hazard a guess that it is likely that, always having used Broadcom WiFi chips, that there are large parts of shared code between the driver for various models, allowing for problems to be inherited down generations. Identifying the specific issue in the driver leaves many and complex possibilites, so I won't speculate further here, but it seems like a good place to start.
Apple? Where are you on this?

  • Big problem with macbook battery: keeps disconnecting

Here's what i posted on another mac forum i go on. i noticed some people with the same problem on here but thought i'd post as they aren't all exactly the same:
just to fill you in first, i have a dec 07 2.2Ghz macbook which is totally stock and i have applecare
i noticed this last nite, suddenly my screen went off. i was confused and pressed a key on the keyboard and it came back up, thn went back off again. it did this a few times, until i noticed the battery icon had a little 'x' in it. when i plugged in the power supply it stopped doing it, but when i disconnected the power it did it again. i turned it off, removed the battery, put it back in and carried on as normal for a few hours, then went to bed.
i get up this mornin and start surfing the net and 10 minutes in it disconnects again :s i scrolled over the battery with the 'x' in it this time and it says something like 'no battery available'. now the strange this is i've been writing this for about 5 mins and it keeps coming up with the battery not available, but seems to stay on :s
anyone know what this could be? warped battery or something?
i was planning on ringing apple up sometime anyway, as i discovered a massive heat crack the other day so will probably give them a ring in the next couple of days when i get the chance.
    thanks for any help

I have just joined this forum to research this very issue. In the past 2-3 days I have encountered the same problem with my 2 gig macbook (purchased feb. 2007. It will not function with battery only, even though all 4 test LED's are green. Just before it stopped functioning on battery I noticed an 87% charge indication.
In the previous 2 weeks I have also encountered an intermittent wireless internet connectivity, which is now to the point that it is just easier to plug in to the net to get reliable coverage, and even that can be slow.
First things first, is there any easy solution to the power issue?

  • 13" MacBook Pro Keeps getting kicked off the Internet

My 2009 13" Macbook Pro keeps disconnecting from the internet somehow. It happens every once in a while when I'm browsing through the internet.
Whenever I try clicking to another page, all of a sudden Safari says it cannot connect to the server. At first I was begining to think that the issue was with Safari but I then found out it was also happening with Firefox. The only way that I could connect to the internet again is if I literally close my Macbook and wait a few moments before opening it again. For some reason my laptop is the only one in this house having the issue, my sister's 2011 13" Macbook Pro works just fine and doesn't have this issue. So I know it can't be a problem with the router. Does anyone here have suggestions???
I am really annoyed with this issue!

Check that your time and date are current in System Preference and being updated for your location.
Your likely being dropped by your router as your DHCP lease is expiring because your date and time are off.

  • Why does my mac keep disconnecting from my Wifi?

After downloading Yosemite, my computer (macbook pro) keeps disconnecting my home wifi.  I had no problems with my wifi before and my roommates have no problems with it still (they do not have macs).  This is only happening at home though, when I go anywhere else, my wifi stays connected.  I have tried deleting/forgetting my wifi network and reconnecting, restarting my computer, i searched through my settings but I don't know what to do. It disconnects like every two minutes. When it disconnects and i go to reconnect, the wifi is still there and has full bars, my computer just doesn't stay connected to it.  If anyone has any idea what to do that would be awesome!

    Hey sydthekyd5,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your home Wi-Fi network. Check out the following resource for relevant information regarding your symptoms:
Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202222
Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly
    - Your Mac may not not stay connected to your Wi-Fi network reliably.
    - Your Mac may stop accessing the Internet during use.
    Solution
Use these steps if your computer disconnects from its Wi-Fi network unexpectedly.
    1. Check your range to the Wi-Fi router and reduce the effect of interference.
If your computer is too far from your Wi-Fi router or your environment has too much Wi-Fi interference, then your computer may not detect the Wi-Fi network properly. The easiest way to check for range limits with your Wi-Fi network is to move your computer or your Wi-Fi router closer together and make sure that there are no obstructions (such as walls, cabinets, and so forth) between the router and your computer.
See Potential sources of wireless interference for more information about interference and solutions.
    2. Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. If your computer works fine when connected to a different Wi-Fi network, then the issue may be related to your network router or ISP. In that case, contact the manufacturer of your router or your ISP.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
