MacBook and Applecare from Amazon

Hi,
I hope we have someone who has bought MBPro (or any Apple computer)from Amazon. I just cannot resist the deal from Amazon for MBP with $150 Rebate (new ones on back order). Question - If I buy this from Amazon, and buy Applecare (discounted at $299) how does that work. i.e. With being back ordered, MBP would arrive later than the warranty. Is there a timeframe that the warranty needs to be activated?
Also, if there is a problem, do you return it to Amazon or Apple?
Thanks,

Apple doesn't care where you buy AppleCare from as long as you buy the AppleCare product that matches your computer. (If you have an iMac you buy AppleCare for iMacs, etc) What you get is a little box with a hardware diagnostics disk in it and a leaflet with a registration number. You go online to Apple's website and register AppleCare to your computer. A few weeks later you'll get a confirmation letter from Apple.
Just to ease your mind here, while I work for an Apple reseller and get an employee discount, I am almost always able to find AppleCare at a lower price at eBay or other reseller. If you buy from an eBay dealer, just be sure you are dealing with a reputable supplier. I've never had any trouble registering AppleCare for my notebooks nor have I had any trouble getting warranty repairs.

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

Yes you can use the iBook Applecare with the Macbook. I just activated a copy myself for the ibook for my Macbook. The Macbook and Ibook are in the same "family" when applecare is concerned.

  • How do I load OSX on an external hard drive (on my macbook) and boot from it?

I am having internal hard disk problems that disk utilities can't fix. I need to keep working and would like to use an external hard drive as the system disk, either clone the existing internal one, or preferably load a complete 'new' OSX on the external drive. Then maybe swap them over. Is there an easy way to load a new version of OSX on an external drive?

Here are links to articles on installing OS X on an external drive. It is probably best to do an clean OS X install as you could possibly copy the defective problems by cloning

how can i watch movies on my macbook and ipad from an external hard drive?

Import it into an iTunes library and then sync the iPod with that library. If desired, create a new library on that drive by launching iTunes with the Shift(Windows) or Option(Mac OS X) key held down.

  • Creating a local wifi network between macbook and iphone

    Hi there
I'm in a hotel and want to move some files to my iphone, but the computer I have isn't my synching machine. I would like to create a wifi network that the iphone and the macbook can both join. I also have an older airport express on hand, and am using Snow Leopard on a newer macbook pro.
I've tried creating a wifi network on the macbook and joining from the iphone, but the iphone can't see the network even when specified manually.
I've also tried making a network with the airport express, but the same thing happens as with the macbook.
I feel like this should be do-able, but I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have been trying this for days now without success! I seem to create a computer to computer network ok (although I dont know if I should use dhcp or dhcp with manual or manual ip setting..??), and my iphone recognises the wifi name I give it.... but shows a different ip address!
and when I try the desired app (iosc), it doesnt seem to be transmitting any iosc data to my max/msp patch. Is there a simple test to check if the iphone is actually connecting ? - even though the ip addresses are different (weird!?)..
    any help very much appreciated...

  • I bought Adobe Photshop Elements 12 full license download from Amazon in April. Suddenly Elements says trial expired. What to do?

I've used Elements at least once a week since I bought it.  Today I tried to open it, and it's saying my trial has expired.  I don't have a trial, I purchased the full license to download the product, and did so at Amazon.  I don't want to download it again from Amazon because I understand I have 2 product downloads, and plan on using the 2nd download to my other computer.  I have my purchase code and everything from Amazon.  What to do?  I really need to use Elements.

If you are having trouble with the download assistant you can try going without it by downloading thru the site linked below.  In case there is some misunderstanding, you do not have to install anything more than the trial version.  You use your serial number from the purchase to convert the trial to full usage.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • Macbook and car adapter?

    hello everybody,
i am the proud owner of a new macbook. since i am a photographer, i need a way to run/charge it from my cars battery via the cigarette-lighter plug. yes my car is that old;-) any suggestions. i am in germany btw.
    thanks a lot, eddie wagner

    Hi Wagner,
Up until now, there is no car adapter mag safe for macbook and macbookpro from apple or third party supplier.
What I do to fill the gap is buy a small car inverter and plug it to the lighter outlet and I plugged my magsafe to the other end.
Get one that at least have enough wattage for your magsafe (60 watt).
Also Mort (First Magus) often give this link to consider:

    Good Luck.

  • So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

  • I dropped my macbook pro 17" from about 4 feet from my shelf onto a hard floor and it dinged the corner pretty bad, but it still works OK. a year back also it fell of from 1ft height but that time there was not any dent.

I dropped my macbook pro 17" from about 4 feet from my shelf onto a hard floor and it dinged the corner pretty bad, but it still works OK. a year back also it fell of from 1ft height but that time there was not any dent. my worry is will it give any prop in future or its just a cosmetic issue but in performance it wont give any problems. it happened an hr back & i am very upset for this misshandling.

I dropped a MBP and dented that same corner, though it wasn't one of the unibody MBPs:
It worked flawlessly for a month, then suddenly died.  I put it to sleep one day, then 5 minutes later remembered something I had forgotten to do, opened it back up...  and nothing.  It never worked again.  Repairs would have been well over $1,000, and would not have been covered by the warranty or by AppleCare (if I had bought it).  I opted to just buy a new Mac instead.
Now, just because that happened to me does not mean that's what will happen to you.  However, you do need to prepare yourself for that possibility.

  • I killed my computer with coffee. It's out of waranty and applecare has run out. It's a 4 year old Macbook Pro. Any idea whether it makes sense to try and fix it?

Nothing works at all. When I spilled the coffee I shut it down, unplugged everything, turned it over and put paper towels beneath it to drain. Made the mistake of turning it back on after a couple of hours. It worked but emitted strange noises from the internal speakers. Turned it back off, but have not been able to turn it back on since. I disassembled the entire macbook yesterday, found coffee stains on the keyboard components. Tried to turn it on and get nothing. The only sign of life is the battery indicator. When I press the button the series of green lights come on, but that's it. Thanks for your responses. Jaylloyd

  • Late-Model iPod; New from Amazon: Warranty / AppleCare Possible?

    Hi there,
Amazon seems to have a few 32GB and 64GB iPod touch 3rd Generation (iOS 5.1.1 models) available as brand-new sealed units. If this is purchased brand-new from Amazon, would it be possible to contact Apple and to get AppleCare for it, and register it for a one-year warranty? They are much cheaper than 32 and 64GB newer-gen touches and just for Facebook / Music its PERFECT at the price point!
Let me know what you think!
    Thanks.

Enter the iPod's serial number here and see what it returned.
If it shows as warranty expired then no, otherwise I would say yes, I would then contact Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE

  • AppleCare for iPad purchased from Amazon

I'm about to buy a 64gb iPad Air and noticed that they're selling on Amazon for roughly £100 less than they cost if I bought it direct from Apple. If I bought the iPad from Amazon, would I still be able to buy AppleCare for it online or in the Apple store, as if I'd bought it from the proper Apple store?

If it's AppleCare+ you mean, it doesn't matter where you buy the iPad, but it APP+ needs to be bought within 30 days of buying the iPad.  You need to buy it over the phone at the Apple store.

  • Dent about 7cm away from Apple logo and AppleCare

    Brief background to the issue:
I am currently living in Trinidad and I asked a friend in Ontario Canada to order a unibody macbook for me in November 2008. The whole process took a long time since he made a credit card purchase online to have the package delivered to him from Apple.
On first inspection of the product, he noticed a small dent about 7cm away from the Apple logo near the left corner of the screen. The dent was of course on the aluminium shell. The computer worked great (and is working well at present time). I declined to send it back (I had waited so long for it) since it was merely cosmetic. The computer is now 8 months old, and I would like to get Applecare for it.
Here is a picture of it:
    http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t242/pyung99/DENT.jpg
Would I be rejected repairs if say the screen started glitching? The dent was on the product right out the box, but how do I back this up besides with my pics and emails from my friend?

I agree with pogster, the call should have been made and the issue documented. The problem you may potentially run into is if anything with the screen (backlight, artifacts, striping, bright spots, etc.) occurs it becomes a potential candidate for accidental damage.
Here's an example... I dealt with a few years back:
I had a 12" PowerBook G4 that had a been dropped and had a dent on the side of the machine. There's nothing wrong with the unit, everything worked great for almost 2 years. Then one did the optical drive stopped working... completely. I had about 45 days left on Applecare and went to get the drive repaired. The service was declined because the unit had accidental damage on it. Even though it was fine for 20+ months after the fall. I ultimately had to get the drive replaced out of warranty.
That's just an example and as stated by a few other members, the next best course of action is to phone into Applecare. Explain the situation... see what the next step(s) are in documenting everything. As with anything in life, especially in dealing with claims, it's all about having "the paper trail" and documentation.

  • I recently bought a used macbook and if it doesn't have iMovie already installed on it does that mean I am going to have to buy it from the app store?

I just bought a used macbook and its been completely updated, but I cant find imovie on it. Some of the other iLife appliations are already installed onto the computer though, am I going to have to buy imovie from the app store?

iMovie is not part of iLife anymore. If you want iMovie you will have to purchase a boxed set iLife '09 or '11 that comes on DVD. It's not available in the App Store. You will find boxed sets of iLife via Google and Amazon.
