Macbook and Belkin Pre-N Router

I need some help. I have been using a Belkin Pre-N router over the last few years, and have ben happy with the product. The other day, I had to reset it, and, I also put the router on channel 11 because of possible router interference with other wireless homes on my street. This was with the help from Belkin support.
The router is running excellent supporting two desktop computers running Vista Business, and XP Pro. There are two laptops running Vista Home Premium, and XP Pro. The wireless response is great. The activity level is minimum, with no more then 2 computer running at one time.
I have a Macbook running Mac OS 10.5.6

My MAC is running slow in a wireless made, it was alway lightning fast, and I don’t know what to do to correct the problem.
Some web site fill in quickly, other are very slow, and many times, I need to do a refresh to get the entire page displayed.
Any thought on what might be the problem? I use Safari - version 3.2.1

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Pretty sure (not totally) that it may be the 10.5.6 update/safari rather than just the router - but that said, resetting the router might have dropped it to b, g, or or disabled the "n"... I mean, the router isn't operating at it's max speed. My iMac does pretty well on G.
Windows did pretty well on B too, within 20-30 feet... as long as nobody turned on a light or anything harsh....
Like I have a b-g router, so I set it to G manually rather than auto... which would drop it to b for the whole house if I inadvertently used a b setting on an older WAP.
I kinda need to upgrade everything, on a one thing budget.. hmmm...

  • Does a belkin pre-n router work well with a macbook?

Hello, I have a macbook and am going to purchase a wireless router. I've been looking at the belkin pre-n router and have read some great reviews, but none used a mac to test the router. So does anyone have experience with this router and if so, would you recommend it? (or does anyone recommend a different router?) Thanks.

Using a MacBook you would not gain any of the alleged benefits of using a pre-n router.
Performance wise, a MacBook would work just as well with any wifi certified 802.11g wireless router.

  • Need to set up password for airport express with belkin pre-N router

I can't figure out how to set up a WEP password for my wireless network at home. I tried setting it up using the AirPort Admin Utility, but no base station appeared on the menu. I'm using a Belkin Pre-N router. Any recommendations out there?

The AirPort Admin Utility is ONLY for use with Apple's base stations.
You will need to follow the directions in the Belkin's User Guide about using a web browser to change the configuration of the router and enable wireless encryption. If all of your equipment supports WPA, use WPA (with a non-dictionary password) instead of WEP.

  • Acessing Video Chat via AIM on I-Chat - Belkin Pre-N Router

Hi, has anyone been able to get iChat video via AIM to work with this router? Some posts were claiming iChat would not work at all with the PRe-N router *becuase of MIMO technology) but that is not the case for me. I am able to use iChat text chatting on AIM with no dofficulty at all , however, when I try to initiate a video chat and the other party accepts (or vice versa) , it does not work and offers to send a message to Apple tech Support.
If anyones knows of any tricks to get the Belkin Pre-N router working for video IChats, please let me know. Apparently there are some port settings that need to be tweaked. Although I hardly use the Video feature of iChat, I would still like to try to get it to work. I like this router becuase of the extended range I get in the house compared to my previous router.
    Much appreciated!!

Firstly, try disabling the firewall for both your Mac and router. Te router firewall is the usual culprit. Failing that, and turning them both back on, try moving your Mac into the router's DMZ. It's possible that the router's NAT isn't working so well and is, for instance, dropping UDP traffic.

  • Networking Linksys, iMac, Macbook and Belkin

I live in an old stone house and have two routers: one for each side of the house so I can move around with my laptop since the walls are too thick. The Linksys (WRT300N) is in the basement where the DSL comes in and connects directly to it. The macbook is connected via ethernet to the Linksys (and goes to wireless w/n problem). The Belkin (Wireless G /F5D7230-4) is on the other side of the house connected to the Linksys via ethernet. The imac is connected via ethernet to the Belkin and also has no problem w/ wireless. The setup works fine except there is a printer connected to the imac that that doesn't appear in my network. I was told one of the routers has to go into bridge mode. I'm a newbie and could really use a walk thru. TIA
PS: This is for my iMac and Macbook, not the G5.

So you are not actually using wireless on anything, is that correct? Everything is connected by ethernet?
Explain please how you have configured the LANs that the two router provide, The Belkin router, which is connected to the Linksys router, needs to be configured with a different subnet than that of the Linksys router.
    See my post here for the idea;
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12251834#12251834
In this example, your Linksys would be the Office router and the Belkin would be the Home router.

  • Create a WDS with Airport Extreme and Belkin Pre-N

I would like to setup a WDS using my Airport Extreme Base as the main router and a Belkin Wireless Pre-N (F5D8230-4) as a remote client. I have done this successfully using Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers (using Sveasoft's firmware upgrade which has WDS), but haven't been able to get a good configuration for the Belkin, nor have I been able to locate a firmware for it.
At this point I'm not concerned about encryption, so leave that variable out. I just can't determine what settings the Belkin router needs to work. I've tried a lot of combinations based on my experience with the Linksys models.
    Thanks,
    Wes

The Linksys models you reference are some of the few items that will work with Apple's implementation of WDS.
I don't believe that the Belkin device has that ability.

  • Macbook and draytek vigor 2600we router

I have a 2600we which is connectd to a pc.
I recently bought an apple macbook pro and i have tried to connect wirelessly to it with out success.
I basically found that it worked without seurity enabled (without WEP and MAC address) and when 'the enable 802.1x'option is unticked. But as soon as i enable any security it does not work at all.
    Please help????

    Hello Londonguy
First of all you should be aware that WEP is not secure, it can easily be cracked by amateurs and pro crackers.
MAC address filtering is also not secure as it MAC address can be spoofed very easily.
Therefore the security you should consider using is WPA or WPA2. Kust enable WPA/PSK on your router. Don't enable 802.1x option.
    Goto your router config page.
Basic Setup>Wireless LAN Setup> Security Settings
from the Mode: drop down menu choose
    WPA/PSK only
Then setup a password in the field
    PreShared Key.

  • My First MacBook Crashes The Entire Network (Router) for Everyone?

    Hi,
I've spent the past 2 days on my first MacBook ever, struggling to keep the Internet active.
I've never had this problem before and it started when I brought this new MacBook home.
Basically what happens is when I start up the MB and it automatically connects to the Wireless Network, the entire Internet connection (router) drops and crashes and the only way to restore it, is to shut down the MacBook and thereafter reboot the Router.
If you start up the MacBook again, the same events follow; massive internet crash across the network and then you hear people screaming and shouting that the internet crashed.
I've done plenty research, and nothing seems to work.
I've found a bit of information on MTU and modifying the values. In the 2 days I've had this Mac, I've tried every value below 1500 on the Router and MacBook, (including 1492; 1400; 1352; 1450 etc) and can't keep the MacBook to save the Value under Ethernet?? Is this a Snow Leopard bug? When it does decide to save; it resets back to Manual - Standard 1500. It's frustrating, because I moved from Windows to Mac to get away from bugs and incompatibilities and guess what; First day I encounter massive inefficiencies due to Mac
I've had a little success; when the Mac does save the MTU in Ethernet for a session (not permanent after a restart for some weird reason); I am able to browse the internet for 10 - 20 minutes though another Access Point on MTU Values on 1420; 1428; 1436 and thats it. The internet crashes.
I've also tried to disable IPv6 and manually set DNS servers and IP's (automatic/static). No success.
Please help, this is not the greatest introduction to the Mac life, and I want is the internet connection to remain stable for everyone.
    My Hardware is as follows:
    MacBook Air (2010) 265GB
    DLINK DSL-2650U Wireless G ADSL2+ Router
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

It doesn't seem to be just D-Link routers.
I'm having a similar problem with an older Belkin model, running DD-WRT firmware, and two different 2010 model MacBook Pros. Heavy upload traffic can cause the wireless access point to lock up.
A friend just told me today that he's having the problem with a Linksys model, running normal firmware, and older model MacBook Pros. Heavy upload traffic (Time Machine backups, in his case) causes his access point to lock up.
(There's a lot of discussion threads about Wireless access problems, but most seem to be of the computer stops talking to wireless network variety. This problem my friend and I are having - which sounds like yours too - definitely seems to be breaking the network for everyone.)

  • Safari "Top Sites" and Belkin wireless router

Have been experiencing a problem with Safari / Belkin router for the past 3 days. I have noticed it occurs most often when using the "top sites" function of Safari. It seems that whenever I use top sites it causes a disconnect between my macbook and the belkin wireless router. My computer becomes disconnected from the router, even though the router continues to function as normal.
In tandem, a parallel problem which may be related:
In past three days I have been receiving constant floating window prompt to enter my Gmail info to "update RSS feed... password will be sent in clear text... etc." while using Safari. I have read other threads on this issue and some people attribute it to the top sites function, since updating Safari to the latest version.
Anyone else having the same issue with their wireless router when using the top sites function of Safari? To reiterate - the connection seems only to be lost when clicking on a top site in a new tab or window.
    Thanks for all replies!

    HI,
Try Safari Maintenance and see if that makes a difference.
Also, I just saw this post... might help you. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2182985&tstart=0

  • Belkin pre n to belkin wireless card bridged to nic to router to emac

Ok, so I have a wireless router (Belkin Pre N) getting it's signal from a comcast modem. One other port is hardwired into my upstairs neighbors computer (PC running windows xp pro SP 2). That computer is generally off.
My set up is an old PC (running win xp pro SP2, 500mhz, 184MB Ram, AMD-K6) which has a belkin wireless G desktop network card with a compaq nic card. I use the network connections window to bridge these two together on the PC. The nic on the PC goes to a "network everywhere" 4 port cable/dsl router (with the firmware updated). The ethernet cable goes from the PC's nic into the 3rd port of the router and the other ethernet cable on port 2 goes into my emacs ethernet port.
Now, I can maintain some connectivity in this manner for my emac. The problem is that I have to leave the network prefs window open to click the "renew DHCP lease" button every 5-10 minutes because I am just suddenly not connected to the network. The odd thing is when I refresh the ip nothing changes. I just get my connectivity back...
Worse, ultimately, I'd say every 4 or so hours, suddenly my PC loses it's wireless connection and stops seeing any neighboring wireless connections (there is many, I live in Chicago) and the bridge suddenly starts getting it's ip from the router between my pc and mac instead of from the wireless card that was connecting to the upstairs belkin pre N. Essentially the network starts working in reverse!. I've tried using the network everywhere router as just a router or even setting it with a static ip with the dns and router configurations from the belkin pre N. I get awesome throughput but in 5-10 minutes it always degrades to nothing on the mac. It is to the point that I keep the network prefs window open on the mac and just periodically click "renew DHCP lease" basically the whole time I am using the internet or downloading something.
Now once the PC loses it's wireless connection I've found the only way to get it back to the way it was is to disable the nic, the bridge, then the wireless and then enable them in reverse order (wireless, bridge, and nic) and it goes back to working correctly... usually once going back to the mac and clicking "renew DHCP lease" I then have 1 more addition to the last number of my ip. Like 192.168.2.3 would then be 192.168.2.4 and so on this continues. The highest I got before reseting all including the router was .2.30
Does anyone know why this is or have a similar set up?
    G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400 Mhz 576MB SDRAM

Easiest solution, get a wireless adapter for the eMac.
Sounds like you don't have ICS configured correctly, and it can do this when using a wireless to wired connection.

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • IPod Touch (and iPhone) can't find Belkin N Wireless Router

I spent over an hour looking for an answer to this problem today and accidently found a solution - so am posting the answer.
Have a 2 year old Belkin N Wireless Router (model F5D8236-4v1) with SSID broadcasting on and WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK) security selected.
All the Windows laptops in the house could see the wireless SSID and could successfully log in after entering the WPA/WPA2 password.
Both iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS could NOT see the SSID. Also entering the wireless router IP address directly instead of the SSID did NOT work.
After an hour of looking for solutions on-line, including:
    - Tried no security
    - Tried WEP 64 and 128 bit security
then stumbled across a thread in a forum where someone referred to changing a "-" (dash) in an SSID name to a character. So tried this.
The old SSID name includes spaces - "name name1 name2". I deleted the spaces, and the problem was solved.
This Belkin router comes with a default name of BelkinN_WirelessXXXXXX, but does not say in the online help to NOT use spaces in the SSID name. And again, the Windows laptops could see the wireless Router while it had the SSID name INCLUDING the spaces in the name.
Hope this saves at least one person going through the same wasted hour.

Click on the blue arrow to the right of the network name, if IP address starts with "169." ,restart your router. It should connect properly after your router reboots in a minute or two.

  • Macbook and Netgear Router - complications & fix

I am sure lots of you are having similar difficulties with the Macbook and Routers. As soon as I brought my new Macbook home I knocked the whole wireless network out of being usable. The only way to fix it was to close up my Macbook or turn off Airport, then completely rewire the modem and router, resetting them both.
    BUT..I found this article:

    Hi Don -
I see you've replied to Andrea, and I'm sure you're a very helpful fellow on these forums judging by the number of bars next to your login. Maybe you're chums with Andrea, I don't know. However, since I'm the only other poster in this thread so far, I'm sure you won't mind if I ask to what or whom specifically you're referring. It would seem you've been troubled by a great number of posts by people who haven't posted in this thread, unless of course you mean me. I don't post much in these forums, so perhaps I don't understand your protocols, but it sure feels as if you're preaching to the choir. I certainly didn't post my questions and results in anticipation of a short treatise on lethargy. I - and I'm sure many others like me with less expertise than those like you who respond to our questions - post here as a last resort when things that have worked fail to work after recent changes. In our case, after several years of uninterrupted service from our router, the only hitch we experienced was with the addition of our MBP; my search on the Discussions pointed me to this thread, and thankfully Andrea's link. Are you actually begrudging folks for not diagnosing the hitch as a firmware update before posting a question? Isn't a forum like this the place for folks who "think they know a little" to ask questions of those who think they know a little more? By this inflated measure (didn't it used to be "those who think they know everything?"), no one should post questions, nor certainly expect useful responses, as your post suggests.
