MacBook and "Find my Mac" app Question???

I recently had my MacBook stolen. I have called the police. I want to try and detect where my stolen MacBook is. Are there anyways in which the thief can hide the MacBook from the "Find my Mac" app other than staying offline? Also, I have two user accounts on my MacBook (User 1 and User 2). Will the app "Find my Mac" still work even though the person is logged onto user 2? I have done nothing to the user 2 account. It's just a basic account for the family to use when they want to try out my MacBook. I believe there was no password on the user 2 account. Please shed some light on this issue. I want my MacBook back!!!

Hello Ipanamick,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

As long as your lost Mac is connected to a Wi-Fi network and not asleep, you can locate it on a map. You can play a sound on it, lock it, or erase it completely if it’s connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Have a nice day,
Mario

  • Where is my Mac App. I purchased a MacBook Pro about two years ago while in Okinawa.  I recently moved to St Louis.  When using the "find my Mac" app, it still says my Mac is located in Okinawa.  How do I get it to recognize that it is now in St. Louis?

Open System Preferences using the menu item " > System Preferences" then select the "Security & Privacy" pane.  selec the "Location Services" on the left and enable using the checkbox:
Just noticed you details show you are running OS X 10.7.5 so I am not sure this is exactly correct.

You arne't necessarily doing anything wrong.
Install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That should reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is finished installing.
You should see the App Store icon in the Dock and be able to access from your Apple menu also.
Make sure your Mac meet's Lion's requirements

  • Could I still use the "find my mac"-app if I downgraded from OSX Lion to Snow Leopard?

In the beginning of 2012, I had the great misfortune of getting robbed and all my recording equipment was stolen, including my macbook pro 17" running on OSX Snow Leopard.  I was able to buy a new macbook, same as the old one, but with the OSX Lion.  It didn't take long before I noticed that it wasn't running as smooth as the previous OSX.  At first I thougt it was the hardware; Steve Jobs had just died and I thought the people at Apple felt like they could finally ditch the high standards that were once enforced upon them and go Windows on our *****.  But I soon learned it was the software.  After re-purchasing my recording-software and trying and failing to install it, time after time, I got to a point where I just wanted to smash the whole thing and throw it out the window...  Fortunately I managed to get a hold of myself.  Now, I still want to get rid of the osx Lion and downgrade, but I don't want to have my stuff stolen again at some point and then find out that not only will Apple not pay out the insurance I payed for, but also I can't find my macbook anywhere, because I don't have this stupid application anymore because I downgraded.  So, I was wondering if there's any chance to have the best of both worlds. (or the best of one world and then just the other/previous world)  The only thing that's good about Lion is the "find my mac"-app.  All the rest utterly ***** ***!!
    Sincerelly,
    a very disgruntled mac-user.

"Find my Mac" is an OS X Lion feature and is not available in Snow Leopard. So if you want Find My Mac in yor MacBook Pro you'll be stuck to OS X Lion.
I don't know what else to tell you other than consider buying Lo-Jack for laptops.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT1338 I cant find the mac app store on my mac book pro w/ snow leopard

I just bought an older MacBook Pro and updated the operating system to Snow Leopard. I can not find the Mac App Store and I do not see any way to download it off of Apple.com. Does anyone know how to get this application?

Run the Mac OS X 10.6.6 or newer combo updater, either from Apple's website or through Software Update.

  • My Mac has been stolen, but I have my iCloud account setup. The "find my mac" app has found the apartment block it's in, but I need an IP address. Is there a way to see the IP address of my Mac through iCloud?

My Mac has been stolen, but I have my iCloud account setup. The "find my mac" app has found the apartment block it's in, but I need an IP address for the police to go and claim it. Is there a way to see the IP address of my Mac through iCloud? I've tried to get the IP address through Gmail and Dropbox but no success. Is there any software that updates automatically that I could find the IP address through?

Shouldn't the IP address be on the box you bought the machine in? If you have the box, take it to the police as evidence that it's your machine. If I were you, I would set the firmware password when you get it back, but make sure you have the password written down in a safe place. If you forget it, there's only two ways to reset it. Either pay $400+ for the tool that can do it, or pay almost nothing for Apple to do it, I think it depends on where you live. The firmware password is this encrypted password and it can't be hacked either. The password prevents anyone from booting the machine into recovery mode, thus preventing them from restoring the computer to factory settings or performing any other functions. It's not stored in the hard drive so replacing that will be of no use either.
I hope you get your Mac back and I hope this was helpful!

  • I have a MacBook and am running Mac OS X 10.6.8, I thought I couldn't get a virus but a friend recently told me she got one of those stupid link emails from me that I never sent. What can I do?

I have a MacBook and am running Mac OS X 10.6.8, I thought I couldn't get a virus but a friend recently told me she got one of those stupid link emails from me that I never sent. What can I do?

When a virus infects a Windows PC one of the first things it does is mine the PC's e-mail address book. It will then send out e-mails containing itself to addresses in the address book using another address from the address book as the sending address.
The only way you can tell where the e-mail comes from is to look at the long headers. In Mac Mail View>Message>Long Headers.
So it probably wasn't sent from your Mac but from a PC who has both your addresses in his mail .

  • HT4995 i lost my iphone 4 last night and its not reachable assuming someone took out the sim.. so can i or my network company track the iphone which is not reachable through assuming location services and find my phone apps are enabled?

i lost my iphone 4 last night and its not reachable assuming someone took out the sim.. so can i or my network company track the iphone which is not reachable through assuming location services and find my phone apps are enabled?

No. Find My Phone is the only way to locate any lost iPhone. However, this requires that Find My Phone be turned on/activated before the phone was lost, and the phone must have an Internet connection. If your phone is turned off, does not have an Internet connection, or has been restored, there is no way to locate it.

I lost my phone, and find my device app wont show its offline, does this mean my phone got restored

It might have been restored, turned off, or just not have a data connection to the internet (such as by removing the sim card and turning off wifi).  If it appears on the devices list in Find My iPhone, you can issue a Lost Mode command, which will lock it with a passcode and display a message of your choosing if and when it goes back online (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmfc0f0165).

  • My macbook pro has been stolen and i had icloud and find my mac installed. If the thief was to wipe my harddrive and use internet recovery, will my find my mac still work?

Hey guys, so I recently had my macbook pro stolen. I had my find my mac turned on and i was wondering if i could still track my laptop if the thief wiped my hard drive and the recovery partition, but if they reinstalled the mountain lion osx from the internet recovery would that erase the find my mac feature? Thank you guys for all the help. Just doing what i can to try and retrieve my laptop. Thanks

Yes, if the wiped the drive Find My Mac would no longer work. The can't reinstall Mountain Lion without your Apple ID or an Apple ID of their own.

  • Stolen Macbook Pro,Find My iPhone App, Erased it, What else?

Hi, my Macbook Pro was stolen. When I found it, I called the police, and a policeman asked some questions. I think I won't get my mac back but I still take some actions.
I use Find my iPhones app on my mac and received an email of notification from this application. It showed the detailed address. Then I called the police station. They checked the address and told me that the address is an apartment building, so they can't do anything for it.
I didn't have the orginal box of my computer so I tried to find the serial number under my Apple id account. But under My Products, my Mac was no longer there, I thought the mac should have been registered by the theif. What else I can do with the serail number? The policeman told me if I can give him the serial number, he can enter it in the system to track it, is it true? Will it work?
I called the Apple, they said the other way that I can get my serial number was to visit the store where I purchased the mac. Is it possible? I purchased the Mac a few years ago.
Because I use the Find my iPhone app, the thief has noticed it and the thief might change the setting so I found I can no longer track the location but I can see it is online. Finally, I decided to use this app to erase my mac (but it's no longer belong to me) Is it safe to erase my mac by using Find My iPhone?
After all these steps, what else I can do?
Will the theif also use Apple Support Communities?
    Additional question:
I know it might cost more than the actual value of the mac to find back the Mac or other similar stolen items. Most of people just accept it and it can be difficult for police to find it, either. However, if we all accept it and didn't take steps to deal with it, will it become worse? Because the thieves won't be punished and we paid more to purchase new products. Maybe it only happened to persons that you don't know, it doesn't happen to you. You won't take it seriously. Then what if it happens to you, will you just do nothing to contribute to a high crime rate and disrupt social stability?

    mnkun3 wrote:
So just accept it? Are there any successful examples that people get back their stolen mac/iphone/ipad ?
Plenty.  I read about them all the time in my local newspaper.
Like Kappy told you previously, move on and/or buy another.
    The good news:
If you have homeowners or rental coverage check w/them.  Most policies cover stolen property.  If your MBP was stolen from your car, make a claim w/your auto carrier.
If you purchased your computer w/a credit card, check w/them also.  You just may be covered for stolen items.

  • Lion designed for MacBooks and iMacs, not Mac Pros?

Seems to me that most of the major features of Lion only benefit folks using trackpads, which means mainly MacBook and iMac users. If you're a mouse-user all that built-in swiping and tapping is useless. To some degree, the same is true with Air Drop, great if you're mobile, but not so necessary otherwise. So, since I do 95% of my serious computer work on a Mac Pro, I see no benefit in upgrading to Lion. The only features that seem relevant are some of the lesser touted features like auto-save and maybe Mission Control, although that seems a bit meh to me.
Anyone care to tell me why I should invest $29 in this alleged upgrade?

    Nostatic1
I upgraded, had a look and then decided to go back to Snow Leopard. Lion was a bit buggy for a start, but like you I have a Mac Pro, and do a lot of design type work, not as a profession though. Auto save worries me, as I want full control over when I save when designing stuff. To have to go back through lots of saved versions to get to the one I want to keep would seem to me to just be creating more work for me. As I understand it, it only works in apps that are adapted to use it, so my old CS3 would not do it, but that direction worries me if I don't have control over it.
A lot of the new features can be switched off if you don't like them, which is what I did, so why upgrade? The new iCal and Address Book are horrendous looking too!!! Gaudy is the term that comes to mind. So is the full screen version of Photo Booth. Those types of apps look OK on the iPhone, but look horribly out of place on a Mac, where they have already taken all the colour out of the program window borders to leave a pale grey. I couldn't bear to look at them, and had to replace those bits of the apps with graphics of my own.
My advice is not to do anything for at least a while. It seems that an awful lot of posts in this forum are people wanting to know how to alter Apple's defaults and to switch things off. I am hoping Apple is watching and taking notice.
It seems to me that Apple has taken the success of the iPhone and iPad as its inspiration to change the Mac. I have an iPhone and I find the apps like address book that reopen where you closed them a pain. Usually I don't want that same person again, and I have to navigate back to my groups, then out again to get to the right person. It would be much simpler to always start at groups. I cannot imagine doing serious design work with my finger on an iPad. The two should remain separate entities.
This is the first upgrade that I have reverted from in 18 years as a Mac user, and the first time I am really getting worried that Apple is going off in the wrong direction - and the first time that Steve Jobs is not at the helm. I don't have a good feeling for the future.
