Macbook and G4 pro

ok so i have had a G4 tower sitting in my closet for some time now and i was wondering if theres some way i can browse the files on there, i tried remote desktop but i cant figure it out and i dont exactly have another monitor. any help?? thanks!

You have to hold down the "t" key on the keyboard attached to the G4 tower, not the MacBook, while the G4 tower is starting up. This should have no effect whatsoever on the display of the MacBook.
If you only want to use the hard drive insde the G4 tower as a backup, it'a s pretty expensive and complicated set-up. Or did you mean you want to back up the files FROM the G4 tower to the MacBook?

  • Macbook and MB Pro processors equivalent to?

Hi, I didn't know where else to post this.
Anyway, I'm thinking about buying a Macbook or Macbook Pro and was looking at it's processors compared to PC competitors. I was wonder what the MB and MB Pro processors are equivalent to.. (eg. T550, T8100, etc). I thought there might not be an exact answer but roughly, the equivalence in speed and performance.
    Thanks.

Here are some specs that I lifted from a web site. The information is about 6 months old, but it may still be valid.
    MacBook - 2.1GHz ( T8100 ) 800MHz FSB 3MB L2, 1GB, 120GB
    MacBook - 2.4GHz ( T8300 ) 800MHz FSB 3MB L2, 1GB, 160GB

  • Macbook and Logic Pro Information

Folks, I currently own a 1.8 dual G5 and run the latest version of Logic Pro on it and it runs fine.
However, I'm looking to get a laptop in addition, to make the whole thing more mobile and was wondering whether I would be able to get the latest macbook (not Pro) and effectively run the latest version of Logic Pro on it? I'd be putting 2 Gig of Ram in it and have at least a 120 gig HD.
Has anyone tried this yet? Will the saving over getting a Macbook Pro be a false economy or would it be powerful enough to do it justice. Any pros, cons, dos and don'ts would be much appreciated.
    Cheers all.

The processor in the MacBook and MacBook Pro is essentially the same with a slight edge in speed for the MB Pro, so you really shouldn't notice a difference. Where the MB and MB Pro differ substantially is in the graphics card-but that only becomes an issue with video editing and 3D apps.

  • Setting up a persistant, protected folder between a Macbook and Mac Pro?

    hi!
i am wondering what the easiest way to access my mac pro's files remotely and save to it from my macbook when i am not on the same network?
i do most of my work on my mac pro, however when i am out of town i would like to save to my mac pro FROM my macbook, keeping everything all synched!
these files are usually Logic Pro songs, and are therefore a too big for dropbox or any similar cloud synch service that is free (not viable for me to buy any subscriptions at the moment) - my goal would be to have a 'songs' folder on my mac pro that is accessible from my macbook and which i can write to. it'd obviously have to be somewhat secure!
the mac pro is usually online so it could be done via the web.
i'm thinking of something like a virtual LAN or persistant FTP connection? - but have never done anything like this before - any recommendations on how?
    your help is greatly appreciated!
    thank you!

Linc Davis solution is probably better. If you want to set up an FTP solution...
    Try:
PureFTPd Manager. Free. Is the server. It runs on your home computer. I found PureFTP easier to use than the Apple solution in Tiger. The apple solution could have changed.
You would have to contend with these issues:
Enable your Mac firewall to pass ftp traffic.
Do you have a local router? Enable it's firewall. Tell it to pass ftp data to your home mac.
Verify that your isp lets you run an ftp server on your home mac.
One your laptop, run one of these ftp clients:

  • Using Aperture on 2 networked MACs (Macbook and Mac Pro)

Hope someone can help answer any of the 3 questions we have on Aperture:
We have Aperture on the MAC Pro. Now I am hoping to be able to do some work flow stuff on pictures in the library on the MAC Pro HDD. The Macbook connects over wifi (could easily be LAN) to a wifi/LAN router that connects over the LAN to the MAC HDD.
    Qs:
    1) Is accessing the main Aperture library from Aperture on the Macbook possible and the best way to do this?
    2) Can I synchronize select Projects/Albums between the two computers?
    3) When on the move, I am assuming that the best way to transfer the pictures with all the EXIF data and ratings in tact by transferring the pictures as part of a Project.... Is that the right way to do this?
    Many thanks!

It is possible to access your main library but would not advise this - there is no support for concurrent access and you have to trick Aperture into thinking that the library is not on a networked drive. That being said you are on the right track to dealing with your multiple libraries. Here is some more info:

  • The best use of my MacBook and  Logic Pro

    Hi i have this machine
    2.4 intel Core 2 Duo
    667 Ram 4 Gigabite
    I use Logic Pro 9.1.1
    I mainly work with midi
i use Kontact Philarmonic La strings all that stuff hard disk is internal 250 Gbite
What is the best way for me to go.(Use the Kontact as multichannel?
I cannot add more Ram that is the Max i can have on this machine!
Do the midi tracks and then convert audio and add other midi? Then convert them audio and go on?
Do everything audio after the midi is done.
What is the best way to use the potential of this Machine.
I usually have 2 3 bus where i put the effects and send the signal to them ,instead to have a effect insert on every channel.
    Thanks very much for help
Save the audio files in a external hard drive?
Im only looking to stretch the possibilities of what i have,i mean the computer the processor the hard disk i have.
    Its a MacBook black
    Thanks to everyone for help

thanks yes i only today have been told by a friend to freeze the tracks

  • Macbook and Logic Pro Quick question

im sorry guys i know there is alot of topics on this but im crunched for time and i need to get a computer as soon as possible. I found a macbook with 2.0 ghz, 80 gb 5400 harddrive, im going to get 4 gigs of ram, 667 mhz system bus. (im probally going to get an external harddrive)
potentially i can get a better one with 2.2 ghz
Which would be better? Is the first one enough?
I use logic to its breaking point with 40-60 tracks almost all have reverb and other effects (i make ambient music)
    thanks

If your doing that many tracks with effects, go for the fastest cpu and the most ram you can get. Otherwise you going wind up freezing tracks a lot. You will also need a large firewire external drive running at 7200. If you don't need to move around an iMac is more bang for the buck. If you do and you have the money check out the new Macbook Pro. They're much faster, have a 17" screen option and can be purchased with a 200 gb 7200 internal HD.

  • Macbook and Logic pro, HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

    Hey
Just about to buyy a Macbook 1.83, will this run my logic ok? I realise I might need more Ram but will it be ok?
I would buy the next model up but money is money.
    Thanks
    Dave

I don't see why not. My MacBook Pro runs it like a dream, and the hardware in the MacBook is pretty much identical with the exception of the GPU. And Logic certainly doesn't do much 3D rendering.
Besides, I've seen numerous reports on various Logic forums that it does in fact run great on the MacBook.
Back to the original question -- the 1.83 should do fine. I've yet to get close to maxing out my 2.0 in Logic. However, in my opinion it would be worth the upgrade to the 2.0ghz model. The one thing that really does matter with Logic is the CPU (and memory, but you already mentioned upgrading that).

  • New MacBook and NacBook Pros with Aperture

Thinking of buying a MacBook Pro.
How good are the news ones with large files. I have a D3x and the files are huge (30-50 MB depending on compression). I'm presuming a simple MacBook would be out of the wquestion.

Once we get past the usual caveat that laptops are limiting to the performance of heavy graphics apps like Aperture I also recommend the 17" MBP. I have not used one yet, but the new 17" MBP should provide a truly excellent mobile graphics platform. What I like about it rather than the 15" MBP:
    • More screen real estate, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
    • Much higher pixel count, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
    • Available matte display, a very big deal (to many graphics pros) when in the field and no external display is connected. Note however that I not have actually seen the new 17" MBP because it just recently started shipping.
    • Faster; the added size and easier heat dissipation of the 17" apparently allow Apple to make less engineering compromises.
    • Twice the available RAM, a very big deal moving forward as app vendors evolve apps to better utilize available cheap RAM, OS 10.6 and boxes with more RAM access. Under OS X Photoshop (and probably Aperture as well) can already take advantage of up to 32 GB installed RAM, maybe more.
    • Longer battery life is alleged by Apple and by the first users who have received the new 17" MBPs, which matters not to me but some folks care.
    • After years of using 15" and smaller, starting with the Duo, I currently use a 2.33 GHz 17" and far prefer the larger size.
    • All the above benefits and it only weighs 1.1 pound more than the 15" MBP.
Good mass storage management is one key to decent heavy graphics app performance. For best speed keep the internal drive underfilled.
A carefully set up external hard drive configuration and Referenced-Masters workflow will be necessary sooner or later, so start off with a Referenced-Masters Library rather than the default Managed Masters. Note that with a Referenced-Masters Library image Masters are backed up separately, not via Aperture's Vault.
The cost of maximizing RAM in the new MBP unfortunately is still exorbitant, but 4 GB will work OK in the short term and new 17" MBP RAM prices are already falling. Just watch OWC prices <http://otherworldcomputing.com/> and wait a bit to max out the RAM.
We buy laptops for their portability. The mobility componentry used to achieve thin boxes limits performance. Expanding on what I said in the first sentence, do not expect a laptop or an iMac to fully perform like a Mac Pro desktop would handling heavy graphics.

  • Wifi macbook and mac pro desktop

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have a Macbook that can see my router and connect no problem. My Mac Pro desktop computer is far from the router and I want to connect wirelessly, but the Mac Pro can't see the router, even though it has an airport card and is right next to the Macbook. I'm not too wireless savvy — any help would be appreciated. Is it possible for the Macbook to share it's connection with the Mac Pro? I need a quick fix that doesn't involve running a network cable across the house...
    Thanks!

OK, so now you know the wireless card is working, or appears to be working because you can see other networks.
The next task is find out if it will connect to your network, and to do this, you'll need to move the desktop maybe half the distance to the router and see if you can get a connection.
If you can, the area where you had the desktop will need a stronger wireless signal. You don't mention what type of router you are using, so using an AirPort Express to extend the wireless signal can't be recommended..yet..since it may not be compatible with your router.
If you don't want to move the desktop and have to have a connection in the next few hours, get a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. This will be almost as good as a straight ethernet cable and far better than wireless. The adapters (one at the router end and the other at the computer end) use the wiring within your house to transport an ethernet signal.
Best Buy will have a selection or look under "ethernet powerline adapters" in google.

  • Can't Get MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to Network

I have a MacBook Pro (2008 - 2.5 Ghz. Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) that I have been connecting to my Mac Pro (2005 - 2 2.66 Ghz Xeon with 20 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) through an Ethernet switch on my school's network. This has worked without a hitch for years, but when I upgraded to 10.6.7 recently, the MacBook and Mac Pro fail to network. On the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro's icon doesn't show in the shared area, and on the Mac Pro, I can see the icon for the MacBook Pro, but when I click on the icon to connect, I get the message that "Connection Failed There was an error connecting to the server (name of my MacBook Pro). Check the server name or IP address, and then try again." I have tried a direct connect using the "Connect to Server" under the Go menu on both machines, using their IP addresses, but no luck. Is there something I need to re-set to get these two to talk again? I have other Macs on the same network that my MacBook and my Mac Pro can see, and both machines can connect to them. They just can't connect to each other.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have on  how to fix this.

I fixed the problem by re-setting the default values for my VirusBarrier X6 anti-virus program.

  • How do I use the App store with macbook pro and mac pro

I currently use the app store with the mac book, but want to buy (share?) apps and music with the mac pro.
I can't find anything that specifically outlines how this works.
I use SplashID with the macbook and an iPhone, and want to use it (and sync it) on the mac pro as well.
If you buy apps for a macbook, can you use them on a second machine, or do you need to buy it a second time?

Your license from the MAS allows you to download and install the apps on as many Macs as you own or have under your control (institutional or employer supplied Macs.) The Mac should to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion. Open the MAS app on the Mac Pro and sign into your account to have access to download all of your previous purchases in the Purchased pane.
Simple apps can also be dragged & dropped over a network connection from the MacBook to the Mac Pro.

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.
