MacBook and Mac mini togheter?

Hi everyone... I'm the proud owner of a MacBook but I'm studying Computer Engeneering and my MacBook is becoming slower and slower.. So my question is if I'm able to use Mac mini conected to my MacBook using it as a screen.
Thanks for your answer!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is not an ideal situation. The best thing is to buy an inexpensive screen, but this app may work for you for a while.

  • Why is my Internet connection hanging on both MacBook and Mac mini, but not PCs, Xbox, or iOS devices?

I have a MacBook pro and Mac mini both running the latest version of lion.  I've had this issue with my MacBook for sometime now, but just dealt with it and figured it was isolated, but now I am finding its not.
Essentially, I will open up safari, or Chrome, and the first few pages will load fine.  Sometimes I will get lucky and be able to browse normally, but after awhile, safari just hangs there and stops loading.  I can close the window, and open a few more pages before it does it again.  Both my mini and MacBook do this, but only on my home network.  My MacBook runs perfectly fine on my work wi if, and other wi fis, so I definitely know its my home modem.  If I wait it out I can surf the Internet again, but this dead time is absolutely killing me. It just randomly stalls, on both computers.
I current have time Warner cable roadrunner, with a cable modem gateway.  The issue was happening on a straight connection.  I had hoped getting a time capsule and connecting to that network would solve things, but it didn't.  Interestingly enough, my Pcs, Xbox, and all 4 of my iPads and iPhones work just fine on the wifi, so there has to be a communication issues with the MacBook and mini with the cable router.
I've tried messing with lions network DNS servers and tried opendns ones, but those didn't work.  Sometimes I can fix the problem for a few hours by power cycling the modem and router, but I shouldn't  have to do that over and over every time it's an issue.  I've also tried removing and adding the wi if connections, but that.works for a minute or two and then the problem resumes.
Now, I have my time capsule connected to the gateway, and tuned the time Warner modem wireless off, which didn't help of course, but at least I'm properly backed up.
I'm not sure what the issue is.  I've even tried typing an ip address of apple during a dead time to see if that worked and didn't.
Does anyone have any other ideas?  I'm pretty much at my wits end in this, any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried a simple reset of your iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, have you tried any of the troubleshooting mentioned in this Apple support document?

  • Auto Sync iTunes Libraries between Macbook and Mac Mini?

I download and store all of my music on my Mac book. But I would like to know if it is possible to make it so that, if I add 3 songs to my macbook, my Mac Mini will reflect the same changes, and vice versa. Kind of like what Mobile Me does with iCal and Contacts.
So If I add a song on my Macbook, my home network would transfer the song to my Mac Mini and update the iTunes library?
And I'd rather not use an external network drive to keep my library on, because I need my music physically on my Macbook.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance.

There are a few utilities specifically designed to help you sync iTunes across different computers. You could begin your research by having a look at these for instance:
    TuneRanger
    SuperSync
    syncOtunes

  • Using a 1TB G-Drive with macbook and mac mini

After checking the net for solutions, I have decided to post here. Hopefully I haven't missed something as to not be redundant.
Currently I am using time machine to do incremental backups on my unibody macbook to my g-drive wirelessly through my airport extreme via usb.
I ordered a unibody mac mini and I was wondering if I could connect the mac mini to the g-drive via firewire 800 and back up both mac mini and macbook to the one drive.
I know time machine can handle the multiple computer situation, but I don't know if it can handle the 2 inputs simultaneously. USB from the airport extreme and firewire 800 directly from the mac mini.
    Thanks for the help,
    Reardan

Well after experimenting, I found that the mac mini would not recognize the g-drive while it had both USB and firewire plugged in.
So what I did was unplug the usb and shared the g-drive through the mac mini with file sharing.
The issue is now that my macbook does not seem to be able to deal with the new path.
I can view the contents of the g-drive but the .sparsebundle file can not be opened on my macbook. It tries to mount it as a disk image.
Anyways, any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Use one iTunes Library for both my MacBook and Mac Mini

    Hi,
I want to make a few changes in my configuration, but before something will go terribly wrong, I want to make sure I use the correct approach.
Yesterday I got a and on an older Mac Mini Model (G4 - only 40GB hard disc). It runs Leopard. It does not have Wifi, but it is connected to my modem/router.
I also have a MacBook. Currently I have my iTunes Library on an external HD (WD mypassport 320GB) that I hook up to my MacBook when playing music and syncing my iPhone and iPod.
However; I want to use the Mac Mini as a 'Mediacenter' (Big term, because it cannot play HD movies (processor is too old; I mean I want to use it for iTunes and as a DVD player). I have another external HD (Lacie - 500 GB; bigger than the one first mentioned, but this one is not a mobile device). I want to hook this HD to the Mac Mini and put my iTunes Library on this HD so it can be approached through the Mac Mini. Subsequently I want to approach the same library on my Mac Mini on my Macbook…This to control and manage the iTunes library and to keep syncing my iPhone through my Macbook (this is easier to do, because the Macbook has a Keyboard….)
    Few questions;
    1: is this even possible?
2: to transfer my library I will use this method http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US
First copy the library from the WD HD to the Lacie HD; then choose the library on the Lacie in iTunes on the Mac Mini
Then I will have my iTunes Library copied to the Lacie and connected to my Mac Mini.
Then for the second and 'harder part'. The Sharing of one Library over two Macs.
I think I can use the homesharing option. The above mentioned method transferred the whole current library and I can choose the option to automatically transfer new content from my MacBook to the Mini (correct?). But this leaves me with two libraries with the same content (one on the Mini (Lacie) and one on the Macbook (WD).
Is it possible to use only one library (the one on the Mini) and approach and manage it on my Macbook and also syncing my iPhone through my Macbook? I understand that it will loose some speed as the data will be transferred through Wifi from the Mac Mini to the MacBook. But as I will not listen to the music on my MacBook, but only will use it to manage the library, I can handle this….

I managed to transfer all music, movies and tv shows to the External HD (Lacie) and connected that one to the Mini. Then imported all files to the library on the mini. Quite easy!
The second part I left out. It seems the home sharing option works fine for now. I can still 'manage'the library on the mini from my Macbook with the 'share screen' option.

I just bought a new Mac Mini and 11' MacBook Air, and I have a script that works on the former but not the later. • Best program to clean Macbook and Mac mini?

What is the best program to clean up a Macbook Pro, and a Mac Mini?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • Comparison of Macbook to Mac mini

Hello! I'm considering getting an Apple and have a question:
My wife's laptop needs to be replaced and I'm considering a new MacBook 13" laptop for my wife. We would use iLife for our family photos and movies.
When she is at home, she'd like to connect to a bigger screen, our Samsung 19" 913V.
    I really have 2 questions:
    1. What are the key differences between Macbook and Mac mini?
    2. If we go with the Macbook 13" can we close the lid, can we connect it to the monitor and an external keyboard, external firewire drive just as we would with the Mac mini?
    Thanks in advance!
    Alan

The new Macbooks (Core 2 Duo 2.0/2.2 Santa Rosa) released in October 2007 now have an Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory, compared to the GMA 950 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM for the Mac Mini. I don't know about the graphic performance of those new Macbooks, but I have a Macbook from the previous generation with the same graphic interface of the Mac Mini and I can say I'm really satisfied. If you don't play high-end games (released in the last 2 years), you'll be OK. I play Warcraft 3 on my Macbook and it runs great, except the fans rev up to 5000 rpm, making the notebook noisier, but nothing shocking or disturbing. The Macbook is also great for anything like iDVD or iMovie, for average video editing.
If you want portability, play high-end games and do some heavy video editing, go with a Macbook Pro.
If not, just go with Macbook, this notebook kicks a**.

  • The PDF file and slideshow view corrupted using iPhoto. Macbook air only get corrupted slideshow and Mac Mini both slideshow and PDF file is corrupted.

The PDF file and slideshow view corrupted using iPhoto. Macbook air only get corrupted slideshow and Mac Mini both slideshow and PDF file is corrupted.

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem.  If you boot into  Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files.  We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing.  Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

  • Why no 1080p HD video on macbook pro/mac mini from itunes store?

Why can't you play 1080p video on a macbook pro or mac mini?  This means you have to sync files which are over 1GB in size one at a time to the new ipad just to view them and this takes a long time.  When at home, I use itunes via a macbook pro/mac mini for all my multi media connect to my TV, now I have GB's of files I cannot watch at home.
It kind of defeats the object, there is not enough space on an ipad to hold much HD content, certainly I will not be buying anymore HD video files from itunes for this reason.  I am dissapointed to have wasted money on 1080p videos that I have to sync one at a time to a new ipad just to watch them.  The new ipad screen is great but surely we need the option to watch 1080p HD video on out TV too?  The crazy thing is that itunes/quicktime can easily handle 1080p video which is not from the itunes store so Apple must be deliberately restricting itunes bought 1080p HD video to the new ipad.  One question.... why?

I use a 2010 MB to view my 1080 HD content from iTunes. It's connected to a 24" Samsung monitor. Plays back perfectly.
How old is your MBP? I have a 2008 black MB that handles 720HD content but stutters on 1080. It plays them but the picture isn't smooth as it should be.

  • Any help with a Time Capsule install and Mac Mini server screen share?

Installed a Time Capsule, now I can't access my mac mini server.  I see the files/folders, but cannot screen share with the mini from my macbook pro.  Any help?  Error below when trying to use the "screen share" button in Finder.  Macbook Pro and Mac Mini are using Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
Connection Failed Error: Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly.
Please help, I'm really stuck on this one!

Try removing the TC and see if the problem disappears.
Screen Sharing has a checkered histroy looking back through the posts..

There are many discussions about failing after changes in Lion.. I haven't seen the equivalent ML yet.. the TC may not be root cause, just the initiator of the problem.
It could be the BTMM associated with the TC.

  • Flash (is it for me?), Wacom Cintiq 22HD, and Mac Mini

I have Flash as part of the CS6 Master Suite, which I purchased primarily for InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere, but as yet I haven't opened Flash. I'm hoping someone here can save me time by advising me whether Flash is suitable for my purposes. I'm not a professional, just a keen amateur, but I do want to use quality software and equipment to do the finest job I can.
Answers to a previous post in the Illustrator forum (Re: Animation – is Illustrator what I should be using?) suggested that I try Flash.
    Background
I'll be using Premiere for converting my audio-visuals to HD format. Back in the 1980s I was right into three-screen slide shows. As part of the transforming, I'll be introducing a small number of video clips (hence my need for Premiere) and also short animation sequences, probably 10 seconds at most. The animation will be done by an artist friend who is keen to extend his talents into computer art. If I buy the computer (some sort of Mac), a Cintiq, load the appropriate software, and then loan it all to Steve and show him how to use it, he'll happily spend as much time as required for the animation. We're bartering: he gets to use a computer and tablet for as long as he wants, I get animation.
A typical animation might involve Steve drawing outlines at appropriate intervals, over a background, then having the software generate the in-betweens. Watercolour-style shading (i.e. not fill-type, monotone colour) would be added, probably manually for each frame, unless the tweening can competently handle watercolour-style shading. For some of Steve's doodlings on his iPad (simplified versions of what we're aiming for), check out http://www.mediafire.com/download/sj731c17co55g5w/Steve's_iPad_Work.zip
We're both new to this and recently spent an afternoon together looking at videos on Flash and the Cintiq. The combination looks like it will work for us, but I have a few questions which I'm hoping some of the experts on this forum can answer. A simple yes or no may save me hours of reading documentation only to find out that something won't work as I want. I'll also include some questions about the Cintiq and Mac Mini in case someone who uses them with Flash can provide answers. I live in a place where I have no access to these devices before I buy. I have to buy 'cold'. Thus my wariness.
Please note: I'm not an artist and Steve isn't computer literate. So some of these questions might appear pretty dumb to an experienced user of Flash/Cintiq.
    Ques 1
Is Synfig Studio (as suggested at the end of my Illustrator thread) something I should consider? Or is Flash a better bet?
    Ques 2
Does Flash have vector tools that mimic a watercolour paintbrush like in Photoshop? Or is that not possible as a vector, and such effects have to be done outside Flash and then imported as background (or other method)?
    Ques 3
When a Flash animation is finished, how is it exported, for example, to Premier? Do you export as h.264?
    Ques 4
It is not clear to Steve and I after viewing three Cintiq videos, how the Cintiq interfaces to Flash. Does the Cintiq know about Flash, and appropriates certain drawing tools automatically? Or do you have to tell Flash (or the Cintiq) that this button on the Cintiq now operates this tool in Flash?
    Ques 5
Do Flash and Cintiq work well together – and easily?
    Ques 6
Do I need a monitor to be able to use Flash with the Cintiq? Or would a Mac Mini be a suitable computer – with the Cintiq acting as monitor? Steve won't ever be using this setup as a computer. He'll be treating the Cintiq as a canvas on which to draw and paint.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi Guy,
I thought I was the only one around who was old enough to have worked on wide screen multi-image slide shows!
Flash may be the right product for you and Steve. I use Flash with an Intuos 4 tablet and it works fine. What you want to do is to search the Flash forums for references to Cintiq. There may be some problems that interfere with your intended use, or it may work exactly as you want. The important element for working with any Wacom product is to be sure that you are using the latest drivers for the Wacom product.
If you choose to use a mac mini, get a new one, one that can use a lot of memory, you'll need it.
You can export Flash files to video in most any file type and compression is installed on the computer. So, if you're going to use a Mac, install Quicktime Pro and you should have everything that you need.
I have never heard of or used Synfig Studio, so I can't comment on that.
Flash's paint tools are different from Photoshop and more similar to Illustrator's. You will have all of the flexibility of the Cintiq to control painting effects, it will take some practice, but you should be able to get the effect that you're describing.
Hope this helps with your decision.

  • How to connect a 23" Cinema display and mac mini to an AV Receiver?

I am trying to get my 23" Cinema display and Mac Mini to a Yamaha RX-2700 AV Receiver. I am on first name terms with the guy in Maplins because I tried to get an Xbox 360 working with this display before and gave up in the end.  The AV receiver has upscaling capability so I thought I'd try again.  I tried connecting a HDMI - DVI adapter to the HDMI Out on the receiver and a HMDI to DVI cable from the Mac Mini to the HDMI in with a optical cable for the sound.  The sound works fine but I get no display - the LED on the monitor flashes three times with a blank screen so it can't read the signal.  Another option suggested was to use a VGA Converter connected to a VGA - HDMI cable but I would like to find out if that would work before going down that route?
I am looking for some advice about whether this type of configuation is possible with the 23" ACD and if so what do I need to buy to make it work?  I love the quality of my ACD to avoid having to replace it with a TV to get my multi media life in order.
    Many thanks

I have 4 macs of various vintage in the house and 1 PC. I use the rather robust PC as the server for my itunes library. I'm fully uploaded to iCloud. I'd like to replace this final PC with a Mac Mini but none have a harddrive large enough to accomodate my iTunes library. (about 785G of music and video) Can I use a Time Machine as the storage device for my iTunes library? Can I connect the Time Machine and Mac Mini via Thunderbolt for fast data access? Also, if I can use the Time Machine for storage of the iTunes library, should I consider the iCloud to be my "Back Up" or should I get an additional Time Machine for back up? Also, I use and AirPort Extreme as my wireless router with 2 AirPort Expresses to expand my wifi network. Don't use Time Capsule for media storage.. it is not suitable and although pressed into service it is a pain. (Time Machine is software backup on the computer and is completely unrelated to the TC).
The problem with using Time Capsule to Time Capsule, is simple.. it doesn't have any software to do it.. The TC is a backup device.. not a NAS. Do not try and use it as a NAS.
You can add a TC to the network without doing much.. just bridge the TC and it will work fine plugged into the AEBS.. but again it is expensive waste. You are buying a router with enclosed hard disk drive and turning off the router.. so all you have is a hard disk which is networked.
If you get a mini use firewire external drive.. you can get 2 or 3 TB fairly cheaply and plug it in. Then back up to a TC if you really want, but any NAS with Time Machine extensions will do the job. Or a hard drive in another Mac made available to the network.

  • If i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

if i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

Yes, but if you want these devices to have complete capability of calling each other they each must have their own separate, individual e mail address.  If they don't have individual e mail addresses, the i phones will be able to call each other because you'll be using their  individual phone numbers -- the Mac mini will be able to call the i phones, but, the iphones will not be able to call the Mac mini.  This is because the iphones will be using the mini's e- mail address to make the call, and if they have the same e mail address, they will think they are calling themselves, so the call will not connect.
So, the way I see it is,  if you keep all of the email addresses the same, the only thing you'll loose is the ability of the iphones to call the mini.
EDIT:  Thinking about it, my first sentence needs to be modified.  Your iphones can share an email address but it must be different from the Mac mini address.
This isn't rocket science, but it can make your head spin. LOL
