Macbook and Netgear Router

I am sure lots of you are having similar difficulties with the Macbook and Routers. As soon as I brought my new Macbook home I knocked the whole wireless network out of being usable. The only way to fix it was to close up my Macbook or turn off Airport, then completely rewire the modem and router, resetting them both.
BUT..I found this article:

I have been online wirelessly for a few minutes with my Macbook and it has not messed up the network...yet!

Go to your Netgear router smart wizard page (that you already logged onto) click "Router Upgrade" beneath "Maintenance" on the left menu. Click "Choose File" to choose the .img file you downloaded already and upload it.
Here's to hoping this is defenitely the fix I needed, and perhaps it will help some of you.

I see you've replied to Andrea, and I'm sure you're a very helpful fellow on these forums judging by the number of bars next to your login. Maybe you're chums with Andrea, I don't know. However, since I'm the only other poster in this thread so far, I'm sure you won't mind if I ask to what or whom specifically you're referring. It would seem you've been troubled by a great number of posts by people who haven't posted in this thread, unless of course you mean me. I don't post much in these forums, so perhaps I don't understand your protocols, but it sure feels as if you're preaching to the choir. I certainly didn't post my questions and results in anticipation of a short treatise on lethargy. I - and I'm sure many others like me with less expertise than those like you who respond to our questions - post here as a last resort when things that have worked fail to work after recent changes. In our case, after several years of uninterrupted service from our router, the only hitch we experienced was with the addition of our MBP; my search on the Discussions pointed me to this thread, and thankfully Andrea's link. Are you actually begrudging folks for not diagnosing the hitch as a firmware update before posting a question? Isn't a forum like this the place for folks who "think they know a little" to ask questions of those who think they know a little more? By this inflated measure (didn't it used to be "those who think they know everything?"), no one should post questions, nor certainly expect useful responses, as your post suggests.

  • Macbook Pro w/retina and Netgear router hurdle

    I have a macbook pro w/retina OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and have been using a NETGEAR router for my home wifi network.  Now I find myself having to reset the router which requires an ethernet connection, which of course, my system does not have.  Anyone know of a work-around? And please don't simply tell me to get the airporter, and other apple hardware.  Sorry but at the moment those items are not affordable and the Netgear Router was a birthday gift and new.  All functions have been running smoothly until roommate moved out, changing all passwords and other settings in the router and not bothering to inform anyone of the changes.  So I have to reset and reconfigure the router.  Both tech support and manuals say to do so requires an ethernet connection, which I don't have...

    Can you afford a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter? A bit over $28.50? If so, you could probably use a small inset button on your router to reset to factory settings and then take control of the router via Ethernet.

  • Wireless printing with HP printer and Netgear Router

    I am a new MAC user, and I am trying to figure out how to set up my new MacBook wirelessly to my HP PSV 1600 printer. I have a Netgear router that is working great with my MacBook. I'm just unsure of how to connect my Macbook, Printer, and Router all together. I have heard of using a flash drive to save your network information from your Macbook, and then inserting flash drive into USB port on printer so printer recognizes network info. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    I've never heard of it, but then I'm not a Windows user nor do I use any HP printers.
    If the printer is a USB printer but you don't have a USB printer port on your router, then you would need to use a wireless access point such as an Airport Express to which the printer can connect to the USB port. Or you can connect the printer to a USB port on one of the computers. In either case the printer can then be shared using Printer Sharing.

    I am not sure what you mean by "I have a MAC address". Routers can be configured to only allow access to devices whose MAC address is in a list of permissable MAC addresses configured in the router. If you have this setup and your iPad's MAC address has not been placed in the router list then you will not be able to connect.

    I can't get multiplayer networking type games to work behind my Netgear WNDR4000 router.  I tried a cheapo old router that I have an it works fine.
    Specifically I am trying Airwings on two different iPads that are both behind the same router. 
    Any suggestions?

    I never got this working with the Netgear router.  I created a support ticket with Netgear, but they told me to contact Apple.   I tried a Dlink router.   That didnt work either.
    Finally tried a Linksys EA3500 router and that seemed to work.

  • Apple TC and Netgear Router behaving as one Wireless Network

    Having had a problem recently with an HP 7520 printer suddenly begin to disconnect and reconnect to the wireless network of my Apple TC I have tried several workarounds.
    My setup includes a Netgear Modem/ Router (providing wireless network A) which is connected to an Apple TC (providing wireless network B) by an ethernet cable. The Netgear hands out ip addresses to all devices on my network and the TC is in Bridge Mode and provides the wireless network that all my computers and devices connect to.
    To try and identify if the issue is with my printer or something to do with my network or routers I tried connecting my printer to the Netgear router (wireless network A) seperate from all the other devices on my network which are still connected to the TC (wireless network B). This seems to have stopped the printer from repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting from the wireless network so it looks like a recent firmware update to the Apple TC may be the cause for the repeated disconnections.
    As the printer is now on a different network to all my other devices I would, from all I've ever read about networking, not expect to be able to print from devices on wireless network B to the printer now on wireless network A but I can. All devices are connecting wirelessly to my networks. The only wired link is from the Netgear to the TC which if disconnected stops the ability to print from devices on wireless network B to the printer on network A. It is as if the ethernet connection between the two routers is connecting the two wireless networks together. Bothe wireless networks have a different SSID and different types of security and passwords. Is this normal behaviour? Am I missing something obvious?

    If I understand you correctly in effect the TC is a client of the Netgear router so is just another access point on the Network. Rather than connecting to the Netgear via a wireless connection, it is connected with an Ethernet cable and receives an IP address from the Netgear like any other device. Although the Netgear and TC create 2 different wireless networks/ access points it is actually just one network?
    Yes, all just one big happy network now.
    Any idea why my printer has started disconnecting/ reconnecting approx every 5 mins from the TC wireless network? This has only just started in the last couple of months and does not appear to happen when the printer is connected via the Netgear wireless network connection.
    I think you mentioned in your first post a suspicion about the latest firmware.. it is really poor.. downgrade to 7.6.1 and I think it will work better.
    But also remember HP is a PC company.. have you setup your TC with all nice SMB names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. not nasty apple names with horrible worms.. like these, '  and spaces..
    Also too much auto .. fix and lock everything down.. mode, channels, etc.
    Another question you might be able to help with. Would it make any difference, good or bad, if I just used the Netgear as a modem and let the TC do all the routing functions?
    The Netgear must be able to be bridged and the TC has to be able to get authentication.. I am not sure if this is adsl or cable.. but if adsl and your ISP uses pppoe then yes it is possible and routing with the TC is ok.. no better than the Netgear though.. and worse .. much worse if you have PC or games consoles. All of which want upnp which TC cannot supply.

    i am having a strange problem. My macbook had no problem connecting to my linksys wireless g router. now it is. Set to automatic it isnt getting any ip info. I have to set it to manual and enter all the info manually to get it to work. It has a full wireless signal, and a pc on the same network set to automatic works fine. Linksys told me that it was a problem using IPv6 and that i need to change it to IPv4, but i never had to do it before and it worked for months. And when i go to another location, my work, i can connect to that wireless network with the automatic settings. My solution is to have two locations, one for work set to auto and one for home set on man. i am just wondering why its acting this way

    I'm also having trouble with my MacBook and my Linksys WRT54G since the last update...
    I've found that if I disable the password/encryption security it works fine - but if I have either WPA or WEP enabled, then I can only connect manually, and even then it doesn't get a proper IP address and I can't access the net, even though it shows me as connected with a good signal.
    So, for now, I've enabled the MAC address filter so that only my computers can access the wireless network. I'd rather have the WPA or WEP encryption, but it appears something about that update has made that not an option when using a Linksys router.

    I got tasked with having to connect a netgear router into my network.  The only way I can get the router to talk to my router is putting them on the same subnet.
    Here is what my setup is like:
    Cisco 29111 Router         Trunk Port              Cisco 3560             Access Port                         Netgear Router                            
    10.110.141.254  /24                                        10.110.141.253   /24                                       192.168.23.1  /24                           
    I created a vlan for the 3560 (vlan 333) for the Netgear Router to plugin.  The only way I was able to talk to the Netgear router was to put a subinterface on my 2911 of 192.168.23.254.  The third party has multiple networks in 192.168.X.X subnets.  All /24 masks
    Once I take this interface down I can't talk to the 192.168.23.1 router.  Would it cause issues having both routers on the same subnet?  I am using static routes on my side to route everything I need to the 192.168.23.1 router.  The third party is also doing the same with static routes to get to my network.
    I do not have administrative access to the Netgear and have never worked with them.

    You need that interface in order to route traffic to the destinations behind the netgear router so what you are doing is correct.

  • Running a network with Time Capsule and Netgear router - is it possible?

    We have an iMac and a Toshiba laptop. I was wondering if it was possible to have a wireless network with a Time Capsule and our Netgear DG834G router. We live in a solid brick house and the Netgear router is upstairs and we find we get very little, if any reception from downstairs. We have just purchased the Time Capsule and we were hoping to move the Netgear downstairs and have the Time Capsule upstairs to get reception all over the house. Is running a network like this possible, and if it is, how do we do it. Both the iMac and the laptop need to be able to connect. Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook and Windows Router

    Just wondering was going to purchase that new Mac Book and wanted to know if it can work with a rounter that has other windows computers on it.

    I would also like to add that so far, I'm VERY impressed with how the Airport extreme works on the Macbook, waking up from sleep it seems like Macbook re-connects to my wireless router (Netgear) instantly, where as my IBM T43 laptop takes like almost a minute for it to redetect my wireless router and re-associate. My netgear wireless router is also setup not to broadcast SSID and I'm using 128bit wep key.

    A friend of mine has that router and I connect regularly to it with no problems at all.
    I use Netgear myself, but since the D-Link is cheaper and just as good - buy that one instead.

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

    This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
    I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
    Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
    If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
    If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
    I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.

    One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
    In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
    The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
    One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
    Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

    WPA
    "WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • My iMac and Netgear Router from Sky Broadband are having problems

    Hi, I've got a fair amount of knowledge in these area's. I not long switched to Sky Broadband a couple of weeks ago. The problem lies with the connection to the router that they supply for their service, a Netgear DG834GT. The problem is that my connection to the 802.11g network is extremely slow.
    My iMac, even tested in the same room shows 20-30% signal. This compared 2 a Windows Vista laptop at 5bars and top speed downstairs, and two PC's (XP) either end of the house with the same normal signal quality.
    Contacting Sky Broadband, they assume that the fault is with the iMac and are state that they can't really help because I am not using a wireless adapter supplied by them (If it's even compatible).
    Does anyone know the solution to this? I've heard of many other users with similar problems on different Mac's but no-one seems to have a fix.
    Also running bootcamp, ive found my signal strenth to me maximum, but my speed to still remain at 22Mb/s peak, and roughly 1-2Mb/s when browsing the internet.
    Lastly I have WPA-PSK enabled, and i've tried adjusting wireless channels without having any luck improving the signal. I would be gratefull if anyone knew any ways to fix this problem, thanks

    Buy the Wireless N adapter from Apple and install it. Even though the only specified effect is adding the N router capability, it fixes the problem you mentioned (worked like a charm for my friend).
