Macbook and public wifi spot security - please advise
I have just purchased a macbook. I understand how to set it and my wifi/router at home to be secure. What I do not know, however, is what I would need to have on the macbook to ensure secure transmissions if I am in a public wifi spot like a coffee shop. If I need to use the macbook there to do, for example banking, what should I do to protect my data transmissions? During an upcoming move we will be without internet access at home for a few months and will need to use public wifi on occasion. Thank you!
Most banks should be encrypting all account related traffic from the moment you type in your user ID and password. So in theory, you should be relatively safe, even on an unsecured WiFi network. However, many web based email services such as Yahoo or Gmail do not use a secure connection after you log in (your user name and password are sent encrypted, but after that, traffic is sent in the clear). As long as you have the lock symbol in the upper right corner (Safari) or in the URL field (Firefox), your data should technically be secure.

Just bought the Apple TV2 yesteday.

Yes you can do that. The key to this is remembering your homesharing ID and your iTunes account ID are not the same thing (although you can use your account details for your homesharing details)
Set up homesharing in both instances of iTunes using the same information in each, your Apple TV will then see both libraries. -
I recently subscribed to Adobe ExportPDF and tried to convert a PDF file to MS Word. So far, after many tries, I get soe type of error and the conversion fails. Please advise?
Hi there,
It sounds like there may be an issue with the quality of the PDF. Not all PDFs are created equal, and especially those created from scanned documents can be problematic if the scan quality isn't the best. Is there a dark background on the PDF, or stray marks or smudges?
You can try converting with OCR disabled at outlined in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (O... | Adobe Community. But, while that's a good test to find out where the problem lies, you'll end up with a Word document that isn't editable, so it's not an optimal solution.

I just upgraded to a new MacBook and my wife is inheriting my old MacBook Air. How can I change the her MacBook Air to now be fundamentally hers? That is, so the House Icon under Users folder is her name and not mine? Also the default AppleID for purchase stubbernly remains my own.
You do not mention it, but I will assume you are running OS 10.9.1.
Go to: Apple menu / System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click the padlock and enter your password.
Click the + (plus sign) and set up a new account for your wife. You have to enter a bunch of info. And then create the correct Login Options. Automatic login does not require a password from the selected user.
When that is done, verify the account works by restarting the computer and login as your wife.
Make sure that any applications in your own Users folder that will be needed are moved to the Applications folder in your wife's Users folder.
Now go back to Users and Groups, click the padlock and authenticate, select your own account, and hit the - (minus sign). This step cannot be reversed, so you might want to wait a few days before doing it.
When your wife is logged in, the App Store will know. -
Mid 2013 MacBook Air Public Wifi Woes
I have a new mid-2013 11 inch MacBook Air. Whilst in general it works brilliantly, I am having great difficulties connecting to public wifi hotspots. It connects fine to my home network and to my iPhone, but refuses to work as expected when using wifi in places such as coffee shops. It seems to connect to the wifi, but shows an error message, "Alert: No Internet Connection." This happens frequently at just about every site I use and it is getting very irritating. Does anyone know (a) what I'm doing wrong, and (b) how I fix it please?

New MacBook, Free Public Wifi Question

My aunt, who is in her seventies, bravely purchased a MacBook today. Leopard is loaded up. She has to wait until mid November for fiber optic to be installed in her building in NYC (no dsl available), so I looked at what Airport might find, and it seemed to find one unprotected network and then displayed, below a thin gray line (like the one that separates the list of networks from options like "Join Other Networks) the words "Free Public WiFi." Having failed to connect to what I thought was an unprotected network, I set my sights on this Free Public Wifi. It would not connect and asked for a pw. Is it true that the password for anything called "free public wifi" are those very words ? Any advice ? Does anyone know if there is a genuine free public wifi signal with a range around Penn South in NYC, on W 25th, between 8th and 9th ? Or know anything else she could try to ride the unprotected (aka the neighbor's) network ? I got an "an error occured" message from airport for that one. Thanks in advance for any responses to these many questions !
Message was edited by: jdvivreI travel a lot and find my Macbook will connect to some open networks fine and will not connect to others. The problem is you do not know how the other end has their router set up.
It may be an unprotected network, but the user may have limited the number of connections able to connect to the network, or restricted the number of available IP addresses for that connection.
The most important thing is be very careful of any network that says "free" or "public". I have read many articles about people who will set up a false networks in an attempt to get your personal info. You most likely will be able to connect to the network, but will not have internet access. Be careful. -
When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5? I have a new Mac book Pro 2013 and cannot install. Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.

With respect to your question "When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5?" you are asking us to speculate as to when Apple will release their drivers supporting Windows 8.1. We do not know, and we can not speculate as to when. From the terms of use of this forum:

The planned dates of production or release of Windows 8.1 drivers are speculation about the drivers.

HT1178 Just installed Airport TC and having connectivity issues. Please advise.
I just installed Airport TC. Get flashing "double nat" on TC's Status. Changed to bride mode and computer loses connectivity to the internet saying ip address is already in use. Ipv4 set to DHCP only. Please advise.
After you set the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode.....
Did you power off both your modem/router and the Time Capsule, wait a minute, start the modem/router first and let it run a few minutes, then start the Time Capsule? -
IPad disconnecting from home and public wifi
My iPad when being used at home or using a free/public wifi will disconnect during use. Anyone know what can help, I'm getting charged data usage because I don't catch that it keeps getting disconnected.
You can turn off your cellular connection in settings.
As far as wifi is concerned, might need to try some things.
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version

Reset Network Settings
Go to settings/general/reset/reset network settings. Then try to connect to network.
If its your home router, then reboot router by unplugging for 5-10min. (do this while you're resetting network settings).
If problem persists, then check for firmware updates on your router.(you check router manufacturer support website for downloads and instructions). -
I've just downloaded itunes 12 onto my pc. When I connect my IPod classic 160gb, it's name shows up briefly before the ipod silhouette at the top left simply greys out and nothing happens.
Please advise.I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!! -

DURIM - Okay. I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]? We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro? If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested.
