Macbook and Solid Edge?

Hi,
I want to start my engeneering study next year and am planning on buying a macbook for that. I would go for the white 2.0ghz one with 2 gig ram because I'll use it for audio production too.
Now my question is: How fluently does Solid Edge work with the macbook? (I'll install XP on it with bootcamp)
I know i'll be using this program quite alot so it's important that it works OK.
Thanks in advance
PJ

Looking at the requirements for the application, it sounds as if a MacBook Pro may be a better option. The integrated Intel GPU found in the MacBook is pretty much okay for basic office applications and, in some cases, low to moderate resolution 3D games. The requirements for Solid Edge state "It is recommended that you use a graphics card specifically designed for CAD applications.". The Intel GMA 950 is far from being a card designed for CAD applications. More information can be found here:
http://www.solidedge.com/graphics/default.htm
It looks like they've tested it on pretty much high-end mobile graphics solutions only. The minimum card requirements from the site are shown below:
Solid Edge will run on any graphics driver that supports Windows 2000® or Windows XP®. Contact your graphic card manufacturer to determine whether their graphics adapter/driver supports these operating systems.
For optimal performance, it is recommended that you use a graphic card specifically designed for CAD applications.
Note 1: A number of consumer cards are based on nVidia TNT and GeForce chipsets. Utilizing these graphic cards may result in decreased performance when opening multiple windows in Solid Edge. The decrease in display performance is related to limited driver support for Unified Back Buffers. nVidia recommends the Quadro line of cards for CAD applications, as it does not have this limitation.
Note 2: Utilizing a consumer card, one not specifically designed for CAD applications, may result in decreased performance or poor display quality in Solid Edge.
Note 3: Running with extremely high screen resolution and color depth increases the memory requirements on the system and may result in apparent performance degradation. If experienced, reconfigure the display system to the recommended resolution and color depth for improved performance.

• Solid Edge and Adobe 3D

I am a new user to adobe 3d, I am a Solid edge user and told to convert files to Adobe 3d, which is easy dependsing what I same my assembly to. I am having problems with the screen capture feature, when I capture the model in the as is state the XYZ axis is huge, does anybody now if you can shut the off, I have looked in both Adobe 3d and solid edge and have found nothing.
Cheers
Jody

Hi Jody,
It sounds like you are capturing a polygonal xyz axis and that you do not want to see it in Acrobat.
If you do not find a way to hide the XYZ axis in the Solid Edge Viewer display properties before capturing your 3D model, you will have to edit each captured 3D model in the 3D Toolkit from Acrobat 3D, then delete the unwanted 3D axis objects in 3D toolkit, then do a File > Save in the 3D Toolkit back into the PDF. The problem with this method is it will have to be done to each individual model. it would be better to hide the XYZ axis in the Solid Edge Viewer display properties.

• Questions on Cad Integration- Solid Edge and Solid Works

Hello All,
I had the following questions related to CAD Integration:
1. I have my CAD files saved in working directory. I create DIR for them from CDESK (Cad View - Create Document) and want to rename the files as Document Number_Document Description. How can I achieve the same. Again, I want to do the same from CDESK (CAD VIEW)
2. On Solid Edge CAD integration, I have noticed sometimes when I register the DLL's the 'User/System Preferences from SAP-PLM' on Solid Edge side does not pop up. Can someone tell me what might be the reason and how to fix it. Also if I already registered the DLL's and want to clean them (remove them), so that to try to register DLL's again, where can I go to remove them from Windows registery file
3. In Solis Edge is it necessary to check in and check out the SEC application (representing .cfg ) in SEA document type. I have noticed if I have the .cfg in my working directory and I check in SEA without .cfg and if some other person checks out the SEA, the .cfg gets created for him on the fly in his working directory.
Thanks in advance,
Sachin

Hello Sachin,
1. please have a look at and implement note 645365 - "CDESK: Attaching Solid Edge .cfg file when creating doc.".
2. If you registered the DLL's once and you want to update them, you only have to copy and replace the old ones with the new ones. You do not have to un-register the old ones.
The problem with the disappearing Menu-Items or symbols can only be solved by restoring the SolidEdge-Registry-Path...
3. You can only checkout the CFG-Files if you use the CAD-Desktop.
You have to add the WSAPPL SEC (*.cfg) to the applications in the CDESK_CUS.
(CHECKIN, CHECKOUT and COPY)
Stefan.

i am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty. Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits. Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

• Problem with MacBook and TimeCapsule (with Workaround)

Hi,
thought it might be helpful to post my recent experience with my new MacBook (2,4GHz) and my *Time Capsule*.
I am using the Time Capsule as my main WLAN router and for backup. Reproducible, the MacBook (with OSX 10.5.6, all Airport updates applied; TimeCapsule with most recent firmware update 4.7.1) corrupts the TimeCapsule connection when waking up from sleep. Whenever the MacBook wakes up from sleep, it tries to (re-) connect to my wireless network. The airport sign in the menu bar changes from light grey bars to dark bars and the connection time counter appears next to it; but just a second later the counter disappears again, although the Airport signal bars are staying black. The result is that there's no wireless connectivity anymore; even the Airport admin software cannot find the TimeCapsule anymore. Furthermore, all other Macs (I have an additional iMac) loose there connections as well. Only thing that helps here is to restart the TimeCapsule (by disconnecting the power cord). After that, both MacBook and iMac can access the TimeCapsule again and everything works as normal.
This whole scenario can completely be reproduced and only happens when the MacBook tries to (re-) establish its Internet connection after wake-up from sleep. When I shut down the MacBook and boot normally, the MacBook connects without any problems.
After several hours of finding a solution, I've called Apple Support - and they told me that this is a *known bug*, but they currently have *no solution* for it. According to the Apple Support guy, I was not the first to report this problem (which was somehow a relief, but on the other hand a surprise as I haven't found similar problem descriptions on Mac forums yet), but they couldn't tell when and how the problem will be fixed. (Of course, they also recommended applying the most recent software updates (which I had) and resetting PRAM (which I did) - without any success.)
As now I got the impression that this is a bug with the current Late 2008 MacBook (it has a Broadcom BCM43xx based Airport Extreme Card) which I cannot solve myself, I looked at least for a workaround. I realised that this error doesn't occur when I turn Airport off before sending the MacBook to sleep, and activating it some safe time after waking up again. With the great resources at macosxhints.com, I found a small program called "Sleepwatcher" and a scripting addition called "XNetwork". Sleepwatcher runs as a demon in the background and can execute small tasks before a Mac goes to sleep and after it wakes up. XNetwork allows you to turn on and off Airport from within AppleScript (or the OpenScript Architecture). Now I use Sleepwatcher to turn off Airport just before my MacBook goes to sleep, and use it as well to (re-) activate Airport with a safe delay of 10 seconds after my MacBook wakes up again.
As of now, this works just fine (and as it should right out of the box...) - so I can wait more relaxed until Apple comes up with a real solution for this problem!
Sorry, this has become quite a long post - but maybe it is helpful for anyone.
Cheers,
Mark

I believe this was the problem I was experiencing at first, but it is now worse!
TC works fine EXCEPT for the AirPort feature when also using AirPort on my MacBook (late 2008, Unibody).
At first it seemed random, but I can now reproduce the problem at will. The TC stops working and the light goes solid amber or even no light at all sometimes.
The scenario is the following:
TC works fine, I have an iBook G4 connected via ethernet and can surf the web; iPod touch (1st gen) can surf the web as well; everyone's happy. Turn on the MacBook with AirPort on, TC stops working; light goes amber or sometimes stays solid green (I configured it to flash on activity) or completely off. iBook and iPod can't surf the web. AirPort Utility does not even see the TC (hit Rescan many times, no luck). Restart TC by unplugging, waiting 20 seconds or so, plug it back, light is solid amber; AirPort Utility still does not see the TC. Repeat this a few times, waiting in between, no success. Turn off AirPort on the MacBook, unplug and plug the TC, it is now working in less than 30 seconds. iBook and iPod can surf the web; connect the MacBook via ethernet to the TC, everyone is still happy. Turn on AirPort on the MacBook, TC stops working. You get the picture. It has been 2 days now where I can reproduce this constantly.
I have an AirPort Express that I use to stream music, which extends the TC. My DSL modem/router is in bridge mode where the TC connects via PPPoE. My configuration has been the same for almost 2 years problem free. I reset the modem too but the above scenario still applies.
I did a hard reset of the TC by holding the reset button at the back until the light flashed amber rapidly. I re-entered all the configuration again, but still no luck.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7, no luck. The firmware on the TC is 7.4.1 (74100.25). The AirPort card on the MacBook is listed as Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.35)
I set the log level to debug on the time capsule and entered the IP address of the iBook (which is connected via ethernet), but I could not find anything in the system.log or other logs via the Console application.
When the TC is working and I then turn on AirPort on the MacBook, this is the last entries from the logs on the TC:
Jun 11 20:20:12 Severity:5 Clock synchronized to network time server time.apple.com (adjusted +1 seconds).

(Severity 5 is 'Notice', 7 is 'Debug')
I turned on AirPort on the MacBook at 20:29 and then nothing after those few lines; in this last case, the TC light was solid green but the iBook or iPod could not surf the web (it was flashing green with activity just before as I opened a web page on the iBook).
Still no solutions as of yet...

• My Mac Book Pro has just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. After the installation, the Lightroom tools all became grey. There is no longer any color on the screen other than my picture. Even the color sliders are grey. Can you please help

My MacBook Pro just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. Since the installation, the Lightroom tools are now all grey. Even the color sliders are grey. Please help!

My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:
Sliders are white, look different | Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Be aware of a Lightroom bug with color management in mavericks that makes shadows too deep in the Develop module: Jao's photo blog: Serious color management bug in Mac OS 10.9 "Mavericks" and Jao's photo blog: Further quantification of the Mavericks color management problem.

can we modify them using external program.
i want to know the file as i intent to copy single configured file to several systems.
eg:
for inventor cfg files are stored in C:\program files\sap ag\autodesk config\
and whenever we make changes in config this file gets updated.
so i can copy this file to no of systems.
i want similar for Solid edge
thanx

• How do I pass Solid Edge- SAP configs on multiple computers

Hello All,
How do I pass the 'User/System preferences -configs I did on Solid Edge side' on multiple computers on which I am installing the SE-SAP interface. Do I have to go to each machine, open the user/system preferences and then check the boxes, which I did while prototyping.
How can this process be automated.
Thanks,
Sachin

Hi Sachin
Goto Link Log
and press SAVE button in right bottom corner
choose REG file option and export the entries
go to any other PC and run the reg file
i Hope this answers your question.

• After installing Solid Edge ST6, fonts on IE (like facebook) looks weird.

Hi
After installing a Educational copy of Solid Edge 6, fonts look weird. It has happened before and I then I uninstalled Solid Edge and the problem was gone. Right now I have to use it for school work and kinda hate browsing facebook and other pages that the
font looks messed up. They look like are pushed from the sides and look kinda thin. Weirdly pages like YouTube and Google look alright. It is not the browsers fault, because the problem is on Chrome aswell.
If needed, the laptop is a HP ProBook 470 G0, running windows 8 pro.
Thanks.

Hi,
Check if this helps?
IE\Tools\Internet Options\General, under the "Apperance"\"Fonts" change the Font settings.
As
Milos Puchta mentioned, it's better to contact Siemens support for this issue also happens on Chrome.

• Solid Edge-SAP integration

Hello,
1. I am having cad files with names, like pump.par, 1234-PUMP.par. In Solid Edge-sap integration there is an option in which we can have the file name as document name when we create a dir. As document numbering is internal or external with only numerical, am I correct in saying for this in Document Type number assignment we would put 'external number range' with user exit and in User Exit design something with help of available Badi's (with some developers help) and then only file names could be passed to DIR names.
2. Also in solid edge-sap integration its written that for different versions of dir, the files below them should have the same name otherwise the links get lost, for example SEP-pump-000-01 has file name pump.par under it and also SEP-pump-000-02 has file name pump.par under it , but we make changes in design
Thanks,
Paddy

Dear Stefan,
Thanks a lot for your reply. The second answer is very useful. It's good to know files names in dir versions would be "version free" in SE-SAP integration.
You lost the first question. I want to use option, 'set DIR name as file name', so if lets say file name is abc.par, the DIR name would be 'abc'. My question is what number range should I define for the document type. I assume 'external number range with user exit' would be used to make this happen and development would be needed,. Am I correct.
Thanks,
Sachin

• Solid Edge v.20 on Mac

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if they know if Solid Edge will work on either a mac. anyone have any experience with this. I'm looking to buy some mac pro's for our draftsmen and need to make sure that our software will work.
Any help would be appreciated.

Solid Edge works only on Win.
I use Solid Edge with Mac but I need win (Bootcamp or virtual machine). On virtual machine it works well, on Bootcamp it works like on PC!
You can buy a Mac Pro and install W7 with bootcamp. Remember that Solid Edge needs a Nvidia Graphic Card to work perfectly.
I know that NX (of Siemens) works on OS X (native), but not Solid Edge (we are waiting).

• Macbook and Logic Pro Information

Folks, I currently own a 1.8 dual G5 and run the latest version of Logic Pro on it and it runs fine.
However, I'm looking to get a laptop in addition, to make the whole thing more mobile and was wondering whether I would be able to get the latest macbook (not Pro) and effectively run the latest version of Logic Pro on it? I'd be putting 2 Gig of Ram in it and have at least a 120 gig HD.
Has anyone tried this yet? Will the saving over getting a Macbook Pro be a false economy or would it be powerful enough to do it justice. Any pros, cons, dos and don'ts would be much appreciated.
Cheers all.

The processor in the MacBook and MacBook Pro is essentially the same with a slight edge in speed for the MB Pro, so you really shouldn't notice a difference. Where the MB and MB Pro differ substantially is in the graphics card-but that only becomes an issue with video editing and 3D apps.

• Macbook and loss of power

I lost power with my Macbook, and after rebooting, my email accounts were gone!!

For anyone experiencing the same issues, I wanted to post a supplementary and final post on this issue.
Several days in with the 253 cycle battery, I noted the following:
1) The iBook breezed along with the power connected. Essentially it was back to its old self.
2) Unplugged, it developed occasional freeze tendencies when the power dipped below 40-50%.
3) The iBook passed every test I threw at it. I could find nothing obvious in any of the logs to suggest a hardware problem (other than a kaput battery).
Almost certainly its probably a power issue although I suspect the HD may not have years of useful life. I swithered about replacing the battery with a new Apple battery, a NewerTech battery or another 3rd party replacement battery. After some thought, we bit the bullet and retired the iBook and we now have a white unibody MacBook. Depending on its saleability, the iBook may well be destined to live on as an entertainment device/traveling Mac as it is still a solid performer for lighter tasks.
Upshot: when your iBook starts behaving weirdly, take a look at the battery health.
Thanks

• MacBook and recording

I'm considering purchasing a MacBook for recording with GarageBand, but also for college for the next 5 years. My first priority was for recording, but I figured I might as well get the regular MacBook.
My question is, with the lack of FireWire on the new Macbooks, can I still record my real instrument tracks using the USB or audio line in/out? Is there equipment I can buy?

I have to agree with the post above, USB is awful for audio, it may be fine for MIDI, but audio does not play nicely with USB at all.
You're better off getting a refurbed MBP, or even the white macbook if you can find one. DO NOT try one of the new MBP with firewire audio until you can find out for certain that the Agere FW chipset plays nicely with audio interfaces, Apple stopped using the Texas Instruments firewire chipset in this revision, a chipset that all major audio interface makers recommend.
It seems that with this new line up of notebooks Apple have really annoyed alot of people who do anything with audio, funny when one of their startpage headlines is about the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, all using the older macbooks and a pretty solid inexpensive audio interface by MOTU.
Hmm I wander if Stanford will be ordering the new models....? I highly doubt it
