Macbook and the Cinema display

Hi,
I'm about to purchase a Cinema display for my Macbook, before doing so I have several questions.
In the Apple store at the Cinema display section there is told that the Apple displays are specially designed for the Mac Pro and Macbook pro's. I wonder if the displays work in the same way with my Macbook. I know that I need a Mini DVI to DVI cable. My question is if there are any disadvantages compared to the pro products. And I wonder if there are any users with experience related to the Macbook and the Cinema display.
regards,
Koen

I have a first gen macbook and a 23" cinema display. I can't compare directly to the pro products but, I am very happy with the display and how it works with my laptop. I get full resolution and a firebox/USB hub. It's pretty sweet. I would tell you that if you are about to buy a display I would hold off for the leopard anouncement, the rumor is apple will replace the current display line up.

  • DVI Distribution Amp between Macbook and 30" Cinema display

I'm wanting to split my output from my macbook Pro to two different outputs, one of them being a 30" mac cinema display. Currently I have the display port to DVI plugged in the laptop, then the DVI plugged into a 1:2 splitter, then the cinema display and another output plugged in there. This works, but the dist amp is single link so I'm restricted to 1280 resolution.
My question is if anyone has used this setup with a dual link splitter and mac adapter cable and gotten the full resolution on the 30" display. I don't really see any reason it wouldn't work, but before I drop $300 into the splitter, I wanted to see if anyone can confirm this setup would or would not work.

That's still not going to work. The 30" ACD is fairly limited in this way. It doesn't have a normal scaler like almost every other monitor and can only display two resolutions, namely 2560 x 1600 when running dual-link and 1280 x 800 from single link. When it does display formats between those two resolutions, it is actually displaying at full 2560 x 1600 (dual-link) and the scaling is happening within the computer, not the monitor. So you can't use a splitter, not even a dual-link one, for what you want to do.
Have you considered running the TV from one of those USB video adapters? What kind of content do you plan to have on the TV? As long as it isn't something like video, the USB solution might work for you.

  • Why can't I shut macbook air when cinema display is connected?

I just upgraded from an older MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Air.  I have an older Cinema Display that I want to use with the new MacBook Air.  I can get the Cinema Display to mirror what's on the macbook air screen, but I would like to be able to shut the MacBook Air and just use it like a desktop computer when its connected to the display (I have an apple bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse).  Every time I shut the MacBook Air it shuts down and the Cinema Display goes black.  I had no problem getting it to work the way I wanted with my old MacBook Pro.  Any wisdom on this?   Thanks!

Is the computer connected to AC power?

  • Switching to the cinema display by closing the macbook air

the nice feature of switching to the cinema display by closing the macbook air and reopening it to use the keyboard with a black (mb air-)screen -e.g.for shortcuts in CS5 or Cad -doesn't work any longer using OS X Lion which is quite annoying. Has anyone found a solution for this problem apart from the 'option with the magnet' ?
this keyboard shortcut puts both displays in hibernation mode
is there a keyboard shortcut which only puts the macbook (air) screen ( under Lion) to sleep ?
if not, this would be a helpful update for everyone using the mac with photoshop or autocad where  keyboard shortcuts are constantly needed and handling would be far easier with all windows & task bars on the cinema display only.
Alternatively, has anyone a clue how to put the task bar from the macbook screen to the cinema display ?

I dont know about the putting the screens to sleep, but as far as the task bar goes, when you have both screens running you can go in to display settings and you should see both screens, you can drag the task bar from the air screen to the cinema display.

  • Macbook Air - using Cinema Display usb and firewire?

    Hello,
This is the first post for me, however the answer will determine whether I make the jump for an air.
Will the usb hub on the cinema displays work with the macbook air dvi output connector. (essential for me to purchase) would firewire work (bonus if it does)
Unfortunately I have to have ethernet connection because of the setup in my office, and some of the software I use has usb hardware dongles. The ethernet adapter is fine but I also need usb.
When I am on the go the single usb will suffice.
Any advice would be really appreciated.

USB hub works fine on my 23 Cinema display with the Air, haven't tried the others but I use the USB on display to plug in my mobile broadband ( live out in the sticks and don't get cable or DSL ) and it lets me switch between my Air and MB Pro fine.

  • Using my macbook alternately with cinema display and without makes all my screens shift and change in size ?!

After I disconnect from the cinema display and than a few minutes later open up the macbook without the display connected, things are fine. But re-connecting to the display, all the screens are moved and/or changed in size. Anybody any ideas ?

I'm currently sitting in my office using my MBP and looking at a 24" Samsung display. At home I replaced my 4 year old iMac with a 2 year old 13" MBP which is connected to a similar display. That should be tell you all you need to know!

  • Pixel Distorsion: MacBook Pro and 30" Cinema Display

Connecting the MacBook Pro to the Cinema Display using the Dual Link DVI Adapter (USB from Display plugged in Adapter, Adapter USB plugged in USB Port > not next to Mini-DVI Port) produced wild coloured Pixel Lines in the Dark Areas (really annoying) and starting After Effects CS4 it even gets worse: The full Interface is blinking green on the edges of each Panel.
    Pleeeaaaaase help!!

I have the same problem with my 30" HD display and the new 15" MBP. However, I did not have this problem initially. Until yesterday I had been fortunate not to experience issues (see reviews of the dual link adapter at the Apple store) regarding the 30" diplay. However, after contacting applecare about an unrelated issue, the technician had me restart holding the "shift" button. He said this would "correct a lot of stuff". Well it didn't seem to do anything except cause my 30" monitor to exhibit these same problems that everyone else is complaining about! Apple, please address this flaw!

  • Apple Aluminum Keyboard and 23" cinema Display and MacBook Pro??

    Hello there
I have just purchased an Apple Aluminum Keyboard and have and MacBook Pro with and 23" cinema display, and if i try to connect the keyboard to my cinema display via USB the keyboard don't work.
i have an Apple mighty mouse that works fine wen connected to the USB port on the display...
    why is it not working...

have you tried a different USB port on the ACD? Maybe the one you used was defective? I run a 7-port bus off one of the USB ports for all my hardware. OTOH, I do use bluetooth mouse and keyboard!

  • How to use the cinema display while your Macbook is closed

How do I use the cinema display while my Macbook is closed? Whenever I close the laptop the display shuts off as well. I really don't need them both to be on. That defeats the purpose of the external display. when I am home I want to use the laptop like it is the desktop computer.

I am using a MB Pro and a 23" cinema display. Have a wired USB keyboard and a USB wireless mouse connected through the keyboard. When the MBP is closed and when I restart it, the wireless mouse is frozen and the keyboard does not respond. I have to reopen the MBP, use the trackpad mouse, restart again and hope it will work closed. There doesn't seem to be a consistent way to make it work.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Will the Cinema Display work with an older MacBook Air?

My wife has an older MacBook Air (circa late 2009) with one USB 2.0 port and one Mini Display port. Will the Cinema display work with this model Air?

It looks to me like the cinema display is a DVI connection.  If  you have a MiniDisplay port to DVI adapter that connected the MBpro to the display then you have everything you need.  (plus a DVI cable).   The MDP adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port of the MBair.

  • Is there any chance to use the iMac additionally to the Cinema Display as an external display for the MacBook,

I do have a MacBook 13" connected to the Cinema Display and this works fine. As I do also an old iMac which I do not use any more, is there any chance to use this iMac as an additional monitor next to the Cinema Display. I would be great to have both of them running in parallel and bring the iMac to an use again.

Use a product such as ScreenRecycler.

All a touchscreen is going to do is replace your mouse or trackpad, you can't use two hands at once to gain any speed advantage organizing photo's.
Also it would have to be a pretty big touch screen, place your two hands over a 17" screen and most of the screen is blocked.
If you need something like that, talk to Microsoft, they have a "Big @ss table" that does that.
Gives me a backache just looking at those people
