MacBook-Apple TV Streaming Problems

Hi All
I seem to have problems streaming from my MacBook Pro to Apple TV. When streaming Youtube videos from MacBook to Apple TV, the video and sound start breaking out (constant short half-second pauses).
However, I have no such problems with streaming videos to Apple TV from iPad or iPhone. When viewing Youtube videos from my MacBook (without streaming) or through Apple TV by directly accessing Youtube from Apple TV, there are no such problems either. Likewise, there are no problems streaming my iTunes videos from my MacBook to Apple TV.  The software on MacBook and Apple TV is up to date.
Would be very grateful for your advice on how to fix this problem.
Andriy

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Apple TV streaming problems with itunes

Apple TV streaming problems. Since recent last update to AppleTV when I try to streams movie or tv show from iTunes sometimes it is fine sometimes it takes hours (Hd or Sd). No problem with netflix. Wifi is not super strong in location but this was not a problem at all before update. Any suggestions?
    Paul

    ok.
this is not a solution to your problem, but you didn't need to do that just to remove it from appletv. you could have simply unticked the item in your library and that would have made it not available to appletv. you could also have amended your sync options. you don't need to delete something from your library just to remove it from appletv.
however back to your problem. it sounds like the appletv is not syncing the changes to your library. you should restart your appletv and see if that forces the change.

  • Use Google's Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems

Many people have been having a streaming problem with the Apple TV - especially with Netflix. In fact, it's often the most popular topic on this forum. After having the same problem off and on for two years, I finally figured out the following solution. It uses Google's public DNS service instead of your ISPs DNS.
    1. Navigate to Settings >> General >> Network and select Configure TCP/IP.
    2. Select “Manually” next to Configure IP.
    3. Dont change the IP address or the Subnet Mask and Router Address. Just click "Done".
    4. Set the DNS Address screen with the following: 008.008.008.008 and click “Done.”
You should now be able to stream more smoothly on your Apple TV.
This problem is probably caused by a bad streaming server somewhere on Netflix's CDN (Content Delivery Network). The DNS points your Apple TV based on location. By using Google's DNS, you get a different streaming server. That is, of course, a wild guess and is not verifiable by me. But, it makes sense so I'm going with that.
If this works for you, please buy a cup of coffee for a complete stranger or some other selfless, random act of kindness.

Welcome to the  tv Discussion Forums.
Barring interference to the network (which is probably unlikely but not totally out of the question) I'd agree that your problem seems specific to one mac. IMHO reinstalling an OS is more often than not a lazy mans way of saying they can't be bothered to look for the problem and totally unnecessary so far as I am concerned. I don't believe any version of itunes has been a problem for the tv, although there have been the usual problems posted that usually accompany any upgrade (these are more than likely due to updating over damaged files).
Reinstalling itunes will replace the application but not many of the associated preference files that are more likely to be a problem than the application itself. Rather than reinstalling itunes, I'd try creating a new user and try itunes in the new user account to see if the problem persists.
You could also create a new library in the original user account and see if you have similar problems with that library.
Check your network settings and compare them to the other macs that work OK, check for proxy servers and DNS addresses.

Error Message when I try to stream iTunes from my MacBook Pro to AppleTV:
"The AirPlay device “Apple TV” is currently being used by someone else. Please select another device from the menu at the bottom of the iTunes window."
No other device is playing to the AppleTV.  How do I fix this so I can listen to

Yep, that fixed it.  I had been watching a YouTube video on the AppleTV yesterday and paused it.
    Thanks!

  • Apple tv streaming problems

I am running an apple tv with an airport extreme 'n' router with 2 mac pro's and one power mac g5 on the network. The apple tv worked well (though syncing was very slow) for the first two weeks with a linksys router, then streaming became problematic. I have since upgraded to an airport extreme n with even worse results when coming to streaming. I have restored the apple tv ... increased the multicast rate on the apple router ... given the network a boost with the old router ... and even took the apple tv to the store to be tested. Nothing has improved the streaming from my machine (mac pro) which will only play about 10 seconds of media before buffering for about a minute. The apple tv has recently started to seamlessly stream media from the other two machines in my home but not mine. The apple tv expert on the phone only advice was to reinstall itunes or to reinstall the OS ... neither of which I am convinced will fix this problem.
At what point am I to determine that this problem is isolated with my machine or wireless card? Has anyone else experienced similar problems? I heard this was a problem with itunes 7.4 but did the 7.5 update fix this problem? thanks.

  • Apple TV Streaming problems (again - 2015)

Is anybody else seeing streaming issues on AppleTV from iTunes content?
Renting movies or TV shows is just a horrible experience lately (again) - Video either doesn't start and says available for play in x hours, or starts and then stops every 10-30 seconds... Completely unusable.
I have had issues with streaming off and on for the last couple years, and am really fed up at this point.
MANY forums talking about streaming issues as well (some old, some current).
This is NOT a network issue - Broadband is performing great - Have both wired and wireless appleTVs - They can stream Hulu/Netflix/Vevo/etc. just fine, and I can rent and stream Amazon titles perfectly fine.
Several troubleshooting calls to apple only yield Reboots/upgrades/must-be-your-network responses.
I am done with purchasing Apple content at this point as I can now get it from other sources that actually work.
This seems to be a Apple/Akamai Sever issue!
Please chime in if you are seeing problems.
Apple needs to address this issue once and for all - or just get out of this self proclaimed "hobby" of Apple TV business...

I have changed DNS settings numerous times - Google, OpenDNS, other ISPs, even setup my own off my domain in the house - No change.
My main appleTV is wired directly to a managed switch - i.e. no wireless issues to contend with...
This is NOT a network problem - I know that's the easy button to push when troubleshooting someone's streaming issues, but I can tell you coming from a CCIE that I do not have a networking problem.
I don't agree with the higher quality statement across the board.  Yes, some content on other services definitely have lower bit rates/resolution, but they also support VBR streams, such that the stream can ramp up to use the available BW, and for the most part other content (particularly on Amazon) is every bit as high quality as Apple.

  • Apple TV streaming problem.

Whenever I rent an HD movie on my Apple TV and start watching it half way through the movie it freezes on a particular scene and I can't finish the movie. _The strange thing is that the movie timer keeps going as if the movie is playing but the screen is frozen and nothing changes. I tried restarting the Apple TV and checking the network etc... but doesn't solve the problem. This has been happening on every movie I rent.
Can anyone help fix this problem?
    Message was edited by: Ronin66

Contact iTunes store support about this - they may offer a refund for the movies you've not been able to view.
No idea why this is happening - you may have a faulty AppleTV or corrupt software installation.
If you have a micro USB cable I'd try connecting AppleTV to computer (without power) with this and reinstalling the latest firmware.
One thought - could your ISP be throttling your data usage at certain times of day - say you are allowed 2GB between 6pm and 10pm then an HD movie (3-4GB) could use that up and you'd be unable to download the rest during that time period - check your ISP T&Cs.
If it was a single or occasional movie playing up it could be a corrupt file at Apple's end, but not every rental.

  • Netflix Streaming Problem with new AppleTV 1080

    Hi there,
I have had a AppleTV 2 720 for two years. It has been working perfectly with Netflix. I have a new AppleTV 1080 and the streaming from Netflix is awful. The picture drops definition and the audio goes out of sync and sometimes it just comes up with an error message. I have BT Infinity (30+mbps) and never have any issues streaming from Netflix via two or three devices at any one time. I have searched forums with no solution. I have tried lowering from 1080 to 720 on AppleTV, (kind of negates the purchase of a 1080 device though, eh), restarted and restored the AppleTV, logged out and into Netflix. The super HD picture when working is great but not sure if AppleTV 1080 is suited to Netflix. Surely I can't be the only sufferer here, please help! Thank you....

I found this hidden away on the forum:
This is what worked for me. It was posted by BenFinklea so he deserves the credit. Since I've done these steps I've had no streaming issues. I agree that it's an Apple issue and not a Netfix one. All my other devices on and off the same network stream just fine. To test this I even bought a Roku LT which I love, especially for the money and it streamed flawlessly. I perfer the format of my Apple TV so I was glad to have it operational again! Good luck.
Use Google’s Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems
You should now be able to stream Netflix on your Apple TV.
I moved the Apple TV unit away from other electronics and rebooted the router/BT Hub and restarted Apple TV. I did the fix as above and it seems to be ok. Will update soon! Thanks Winston....

  • Apple Guaranty to Macbook Pro Core duo Problems

    Hello,
I bought a Mac book pro core duo in october with 2gb memory.
Since i bought it i am not so happy with it s performances regarding the cost of the machine.
I was feeling much better with my ibook.
High Temperature, battery problems, noises , wake up problem, very low time on battery even when it was new, lot of applications quits suddenly...
This is not what i was expecting for 2500 € !
This product wasn t ready when they sold it to me as a lot of owners of macbookpro intel core duo.
Now i have to take it to service for the battery problem and the noise problem but even if i will loose several weeks with that problem i don t know for sure what they are going to change in the machine and if its worth to loose my time. Because if it s just a new battery it s not worth to loose all this time and get the same probleme after a few month.
i am really dispointed and don t know what to do since there is no clear messages from apple regarding thoose problems.
Mac book pro intel core Duo 2Ghz- 2gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Displays with an ADC connector get up to 4 Amps of power at about 25 Volts DC from the cable. The few earlier solutions to this problem are still not much cheaper, and a used ADC adapter at auction will still cost as much as you paid for the display IF you get lucky.
It may be best to sell it again and get one that better suits your needs.

  • Why can't Apple TV stream movies like the iTunes store can?

I'm in the UK with an Apple TV 2nd Gen. 9Mb/s broadband speed checked and have conclusively failed to rent one single movie since I bought this a year ago. Every time I log in, select the film, purchase it, hit play and all I get is "connection error please try later" Playing movie trailers and everything else is fine. Surely the point of renting a movie online is so you can watch it straight away. Lovefilm works just fine via my PS3.
The other day I tried again on Apple TV with the same error so figured I'd try and rent the movie direct from iTunes Store on my laptop, hey presto, 2 mins later I'm watching my film via my Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV.
So the big question is: Why can not Apple TV stream a movie like the iTunes Store can? Of course I appreciate that a certain amount of buffering has to happen but that is never evident on Apple TV.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay

    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.

  • Apple TV Streaming Performance Seriously Degraded

I wish Apple would acknowledge there was a problem.  In the past two weeks or so the performance of the Apple servers streaming TV shows has seriously degraded.  There have been no changes in my set up and speed tests show 20-30 Mbps download speed and at least half of that up.  On the same Apple TV box Netlfix streaming, Hulu Plus streaming is working fine.  My Oppo BD player on the same network has absolutely no issues streaming Vudu films, nor Netflix.  Lastly my Directv downloading HD movies works just fine.  All this points to the fact that Apple's servers are having serious issues.  One can easily Google this issue and see that many people around the U.S. are having this issue but Apple refuses to admit to the issue.  I guess because it admits liability and shows their massive investment in their data farms appears to be failing.  I just want it to work.  Please Apple just take responsibility and fix the damned problem and quit ignoring it.

Apple TV: Troubleshooting third-party content providers - Apple Support
If you have playback issues with a content provider's services
In most cases, you can isolate playback issues to your home network, your broadband connection, or a possible outage with a content provider. To see if your issue is affecting multiple services or a specific content provider, try another service. For example, play a movie trailer from the main menu.
If the issue is affecting multiple services on your Apple TV, see how to troubleshoot playback performance.
If the issue is affecting a single content provider on your Apple TV, restart your Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Restart.

    Update your Apple TV software
It's always a good idea to update your software. Software updates can include feature changes and fixes that might enhance your viewing experience.
If you still experience slow playback when you view movies and TV shows, connect your Apple TV to your local network via a wired (Ethernet) connection. If the performance improves noticeably, then consider updating or troubleshooting your Wi-Fi base station or router.

  • Can apple tv stream from nas?

I have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo. With all my media from ITunes and the Firefly-Mediaserver is working on it. Can Apple-TV stream this content from my NAS without an working PC?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Greets René

I will copy and paste what I find out, hope it helps you.
I have an Airport Extreme, but it works with other routers as well. Find out what communication standard your router supports. DLNA or SMB.
The Airport Extreme I use does not support the DLNA standards which most external drives like LaCie Fule or DW My Cloud use. I found out it supports the SMB standard though. So a quick search on the App Store with SMB as the keyword showed up a few file managment apps and the first I tried worked!
It's called FileExplorer Free and can access files on your external drive attached to your Airport Extreme. There were more hits but since the first app I found worked I didn't bother to check out the other apps.
I tried FileExplorer with songs first and it worked. You can listen to your songs with your iPhone or iPad or Airplay them to your Airport Express and listen to them at your home audio system. I couldn't hear any loss of quality.
It also works with yorur movies. Just select the movie and watch it on your iDevice or Airplay it to your Apple TV. Works with HD movies as well with no problems. Only downside was that the Apple TV can only display .mp4 files. Even the movies bought on iTunes won't work with the app and the Apple TV. So I had to convert a few movies using the free converter HandBrake.
FileExplorer works with other types of files like photos or documenst too. Oh and as a bonus: The FileExplorer app can also access your library from the DropBox or Google Drive. Works with NAS drives as well. Looks like you need the paid version though for those extras.
In case your router supports DLNA search for a DLNA app like 8player.
So finally I can move my big movie collection to my external drive and still watch it without the need for the Mac or iTunes to run. Hope this helps you too.
