MacBook as a LCD TV Source

I've been considering replacing my iBook with a new MacBook, but I'm trying to sort out a few details. One of my goals is to use the new laptop as a source for displaying photo slide shows on my Sharp Aquos 37" LCD television (16:9 aspect ratio, 1080p). The television has an available DVI input for this application. Any thoughts on how this is going to look?
My other thought was that I may have to look up to the MacBook Pro to get the resolution I'll need to make this application viable.
Thanks in advance for your input.

You just need the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI cable. The Macbook will support HD video from (eg) Quicktime player or VLC in 720p or 1080i and it looks fantastic! The Displays preference pane will offer these and maybe others, just select the one thats suits your TV then use the Present Movie.. option from QT or Video Device option in VLC to display in fullscreen on it. You will need a suitable audio cable if you want the Macbook sound to come out of the TV speakers, this can be digital if your TV supports it.

  • Hookup MacBook to Toshiba LCD

I'm trying to hookup my MacBook to our HDTV. On the back of the TV, there is a slot for a SVGA/VGA terminal. I have a cable to run from the TV to the iBook along with a Mini DVI to VGA adapter. After the cables are hooked up and the MacBook is powered up, all I get on the TV is the MacBook desktop. It there a setting on the MacBook that you have to set inorder to get the icons to show on the TV. I would like to be able to watch movies from the MacBook on the TV. By the way the TV is a Toshiba 26AV502U LCD. Any help in trying to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks......
Is it better to try hooking up a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and DVI to HDMI cable to TV?

There are two options. One you could hook the laptop up to the LCD and close the lid but you would need a bluetooth or USB keyboard or mouse to wake it up, you will also have to have the computer plugged into the power source to make it work. The other option is to hook up the monitor to the LCD then go to, system preferences>displays>arrangement, there you should see two blue boxes. One box will have a white line across the top of it, that will be the screen that is the primary screen. To make your Toshiba LCD the primary screen just drag the white line to the other blue box and everything should switch over to the LCD. This method will allow you to use both displays if you need to and allow both of them to run at there native resolution. If you choose mirror it will limit you to the same resolution as your macbook. Your LCD probably has a higher resolution than your macbook so mirroring might not give you the best quality.

how should i connect my new macbook air to lcd projector for presentations?

One of these should work, depending on the projector. Just note both will not allow you to play protected movies on the projector.

  • Macbook Pro3,1 - LCD Replacement - What is the Model Number?

had an accident with my LCD tonight, in which I closed my macbook - with a USB stick still sitting on the keyboard!!!
So, new screen it is, and need to source another screen. I've seen some of the videos on replacing the screen and might be prepared to give it a go - but I'm confused as to what the model number is of the LCD that I am replacing. How can I find this out? Will probably buy from ebay.
I've connected the laptop to a monitor to access the Apple info, but cannot see a model type for the LCD.
I'm pretty sure that it is a backlight LED model that I have. It's a 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo, with a glossy screen. Bought it in September 2007.
    Thanks

    Bummer!
A good source of this type of information is PowerBook Medic. Here is a link:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16893&cat=0&page=1
From what they say, it looks like you do have the LED model.
PowerBook Medic is a good resource, as you can determine exactly what you need and get a baseline price for what it might cost.
    Good luck!

  • How to connect my macbook pro to lcd

When I was shopping to buy hardware I brought a mini display to dvi & a dvi cable. When I got home I realised my lcd does not have a dvi port. I brought a
DVI Female to VGA Male adapter & connected it to my lcd. But my macbook doesnt to connect to my lcd. I am using windows 7 & osx.

For a 2010+ MBP you can connect with a Displayport to HDMI, which will include Audio.
With older MBP you will need a displayport to HDMI, if you want audio to the actually TV, then you will need to get a cable with either digital out from MBP to the HDMI, or USB audio mixed into the HDMI

  • How to connect macbook to both LCD TV & external monitor?

    Hi,
I would like to connect my macbook to both my lcd tv and external monitor. However, I only need either the tv or monitor to be on at any one time. Cause when i'm during my work, I need my external monitor. But when I wanna watch movies, I want to watch it only lcd tv.
Any ideas? Is there some sort of switch? I don't want to keep changing the display connections all the time.
I understand there is a usb display connection to the mac but I do not need both the lcd tv and external monitor to be on at the same time.
    Thanks in advance.

You will need a mini display/dvi converter:

  • Connecting my MacBook to an LCD projector

I'm an ESL teacher, and my kids made simple movies of themselves telling stories, using my secondhand MacBook and Photo Booth. When I tried to connect to my LCD projector, using the dongle that came with my G3, it wouldn't fit! Our librarian said I need a different one (grrr) for the Macbook, but when I went online to search, it appears that I need a different device altogether - some kind of Mini DP Display port.
Does someone know what I really need? Thanks!
    Helen

Does someone know what I really need?
In the short term what you need is to post this in the right forum. You posted this in the Panther and earlier OS forum but your computer information says you're using Leopard, but that doesn't matter because this is really a hardware problem and would best be off in the forum for your computer. I'll ask it be moved there.

  • Trouble connecting Macbook to Samsung LCD TV

    Hello,
I tried connecting my Macbook to my Samsung LCD TV (through a DVI to HDMI cable) but I only got a black screen and "No signal". The macbook detects the Samsung and even displays "SAMSUNG" as a detected display.
I checked the TV manual and there I found "Don't connect a PC or laptop computer to the HDMI/DVI connectors (it will result in a black screen)"
Does anybody know why? Any solution?
Will this happen with a MacMini too? I had the intention to connect it to my TV and use it as a media center

Sorry to tell you that DVI does not support sound.  You either have to use a HDMI cable (with the appropriate adapter) or tap your audio output port with a 'Y' type cable configuration for sound.
    Ciao.

  • Connecting a new MacBook to a LCD TV via VGA.

    Hi,
I just brought the new MacBook and I wanted to plug it to my LCD TV (Samsung LE32R86) through the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter but I can't get it to work.
The display is recognized with the good resolution (1360x768@60Hz) but when I plug it, the TV will just flashes the wallpaper for a second and then stays black with the error message "check signal cable".
I've already tried some solutions I found like rebooting the mac before plugging the TV, or installing switchresx instead of the standard mac os tool, nothing worked.
This configuration used to work well on a PC with the same cable so I don't think the problem comes from either the TV or the cable, but I can't find what it is so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I just purchased my first ever Macbook with the mini-display port after years of Windows/PC. Upon purchase I was told in answer to one of my questions that the Macbook would video out to a television. Then come to find out I have to use TWO adapters in order to do so... and therefore I purchased said adapters... Got everything plugged up and out to my television (Samsung)... Nothing, Nada, ZIP. I spent over four hours on two separate phonecalls to Apple support (most of the time on hold) only to be told to take it to an Apple retailer and see if they could get it to work... (totally unacceptable). From reading through this forum, I see it is an issue and so far from Apple all I've received is a 'shrug of the shoulders'. C'mon now, this is a major expense, not to mention the three year "Apple Care" contract I purchased, and additional expense of adapters. What is sad is that I hooked up my old rickety HP laptop to my televsion and within minutes had a good clean display.... What's up with that? Please if anyone can figure out a solution to this problem of display to a TV PLEASE POST IT. I appreciate all comments I've been reading trying to glean an answer for myself. I was excited about my new Macbook, but that has quickly turned to disappointment.

  • Connect MacBook to LG LCD TV?

    Hi!
I am trying to figure out what cables I need to connect my MacBook (about 2 yrs old) to my new LG 42" LCD TV (I think the model # is 42LD450?)
Not sure if an HDMI cable would work or if I need an adapter for the laptop. I had also had a recommendation to get a DVI-HDMI adapter and HDMI cable?
    Thanks!
    Ashley

In addition to my previous post. It is likely that your TV has a "PC" input which should be a VGA connection. A simple VGA cable and 3.5mm audio cable will connect from the Macbook to the TV. You will need, depending on your series of Macbook, a MiniDVI to VGA adapter or MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter.

  • Can't connect MacBook Pro to LCD TV

I have a S-Link mini display to vga adapter and whenever I try to connect it to my Samsung LCD TV or to my PC monitor, I have "no signal". I tried to detect displays many time and even rebooting my Mac, it doesn't work. What I have to do?

    Hey V.Kastner,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues connecting your MacBook Pro to an external display, in this case an HDMI TV. The following article may help in troubleshooting this issue further:

  • Connecting Macbook Pro to LCD Display using MiniDVI to HDMI Cable

I currently use an LCD TV to play movies from my Macbook Pro via the MiniDVI - HDMI cable. At the moment I just connect everything up and then use the Mirror Display in the arrangement settings. So my laptop screen is the same as my LCD TV screen. What I want to be able to do though is watch the movie on the LCD TV and also use the laptop to go on the internet, is this possible???

Yes. Turn off mirroring in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.

With regards to the HDMI, is it DVI to HDMI that I want? <http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR842LL/A>
Only if you have a DVI port on the side of your MacBook Pro. Mine does, so I use a cable like that, only a far less expensive one (monoprice.com).
If your MacBook Pro is newer and has a Mini DisplayPort on the side instead of DVI, then that needs to be on one end of your cable. But since you are posting in this forum, I assume you have DVI.
Also, you will need a second cable to carry audio. Or a combination audio/video adapter cable which costs a lot.

  • Ipad to Macbook Pro to LCD projector

I have a MacBook Pro and IPad 2. Doing a PPT with the MacBook Pro using the mini display port to VGA adapter connected to the LCD projector. I would like to display an app from the IPad to the LCD to the screen. I realize I can connect it directly to the projector. But I was wondering if I can connect the IPad to the Macbook via USB and configure the MacBook to display the IPad on the screen via LCD projector.

I cannot quite undertsand all you just said.  Some punctuation to break up into sentences will help.
But if you are trying to say "I hope I did not spend so much for a product no beter than a Windows PC", then I think you will eventually find your $$ were well spent.
As I said, my work-supplied 14 in Windows PC laptop gets  at most 4.5 hours.  I get 5-6 under average use with my 15 in MBP.
Hang tight, you will firgure it all out.
