Macbook as a permanent WiFi router

Hello there!
I have recently started using the Internet Sharing via WiFi on my MacBook Pro.
There are some questions that bother me :
1. Is it ok to use MacBook Pro as a permanent WiFi router ? Is the MacBook WiFi chip reliable enough to keep tethering as hotspot for like 10~12 hrs daily and still have good life?
2. Suppose if the chip in some way stops working, what be the cost for replacing the same? I am having MacBook Pro 13 Mid-2012 model.
3. Are there any health risks related to sitting so close to router?
Hope someone would enlighten me on these issues.
Thanks.

Can anyone share their views please.
Thanks in advance.

  • Viewing lan sites hosted on macbook pro (apache) via wifi router

Hi, thanks for stopping by. Hope you can help.
I've my macbook pro (Lion) set up to serve several websites locally. In the httpd-vhosts.config I've got the addresses set up:
    <VirtualHost *:80>
    etc.,
    ServerAlias site.localhostname.lan
    </VirtualHost>
I have a netbook (Windows 7) which via my router (wifi) I can view these sites such as... http://site.localhostname.lan
My wifi only iPad (iOS 5.1.1) also connected to the router however tells me the server cannot be found after inputting the .lan address ...
Any pointers would be gratefully received, thank you.

Just an update. I'm doing my best to resolve this myself.
localhostname.lan works (takes my iPad to the Sites folder on the macbook).
So this is where I'm at, wondering why the ServerAlias (and DocumentRoot) in the config file (mentioned above) is being ignored. Don't know if I'm on a wild goose chase with this.
I found another thread in here which seemed to focus on MAMP (something I've never used, always used the native Apache server).
I'll keep searching and hoping someone will be able to help out a bit, thank you.

  • Retina macbook pro can't auto connect to wifi after wifi router rebooted

My macbook pro with retina can’t automatically connect to wifi after the wifi router was rebooted. There is exclamation mark on wifi sign. As I clicked the wifi sign, it shows no Internet connects. However, It is strange there is a tick in front of my wifi name. In order to use wifi, I had to click off wifi, and then click on. The previous version, Macbook pro, has no problem like this. I had deleted all files under wifi library, but still fail. Appreciating for any way to solve it!

    try this.
get back into your router's settings and start deleting devices that are not connected to your router.
you can also delete the ones that are connected - they'll connect again.
on the DHCP side of it, increase the amount of users that can connect/log in to your router.
see if that sorts it out for you.
    good luck.

  • Best N wifi router for 2007 draft N macbook ?

I read that there can be a lot of N wifi compatability issues with these early draft N. laptops...
For a location servicing several PC laptops and one 2007 draft N MacBook, can anyone tell me what would be the best new router to buy?
Price is an issue... unless it is absolutely necessary, am trying to avoid buying the latest, greatest and most expensive.
Preference is also not for an Airport Extreme unless that is the only viable option.
    All tips appreciated.

What particular LinkSys Wifi router do you have that works well with your son's 2007 draft N macbook pro? There are number of models now. Also, do you have any idea of whether your son's macbook actually get's N speed connectivity?
It's a [WRT310N|http://www-id.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=LProductC2&childpagename=ID%2FLayout&cid=1175242816979&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisit orWrapper&lid=1697985430B01]. I can only assume that he gets N speeds or he would have mentioned it. I'll have to get back to you about any details that you have concerning his connections. He is in college and this is his winter break so I don't see him too much. The balance of our network that uses G is enjoying increased wireless coverage and an increase in bandwidth availability.

  • I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet

I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet. The Airport icon changes to show a laptop inside, my iPad shows connected (I think) but Safari will not operate. I tried pinging my iPad, it seems to see the iPad, but no connection to Safari or to other apps such as Good on the iPad. I have read many posting and tried repeatedly via Sharing in Systems Preferences, but no luck. Suggestions to fix, or is this a Lion problem?

Usually this is a problem related to the domain name server address. If you open Network preferences, select your Ethernet port then click on the Advanced button then on the DNS tab. You will likely see an entry like 10.0.1.1 already listed. Click on the Add [-] button and enter 208.67.222.222 then click on the OK button and then on the Apply button.  See if this helps.
if it does not help then repeat the above but with the Airport port.

  • Macbook pro fails to auto connect Internet after rebooting wifi router

My macbook pro with retina can’t automatically connect to wifi after the wifi router was rebooted.
There is exclamation mark on wifi sign. As the picture shows, when I clicked the wifi sign, it shows no Internet connection. However, It is strange there is a tick in front of my wifi name. Moreover, in preference set, it shows a confused self-assigned IP address 169.254…(showed in picture). In order to use wifi, I had to turn wifi off, and then turn it on. And the correct IP address for my mac should be 192… (showed in picture).
I had tried to delete my preferred networks and tested macbook in my friend’s home, but it still failed. This bug happens in my friend’s macbook pro with retina (same to mine) and macbook air. However, the previous version, Macbook pro (not retina), has no this problem.
This happened just when I reboot the router. It is normal working (connect automatically) when I come back home. Appreciating for any way to solve it!

I have no clue of what an Airport antenna is either.  I know my Airport Extreme does not have one.
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • HT3275 I am getting a message that the backup failed because the "sparsebundle is already in use."  My husband and I both have MacBooks that back up to one time machine.  It is also our wifi router.  I do not understand this message

I am getting the message that "the backup disk image '/volumes//data/ ---'s MacBook pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  ---"s is my administrator designation.  I don't know what this means or what I should do.  My husband and I both use the same time machine with our MacBooks.  It is our router for our home network although for the most part our computers are separate.  We share an email site, and some files.  I am concerned that we are not backed up securely

Most common message in history of the TC.. something has failed to unmount.. Lion and esp. Mountain Lion are affected.
Simple way.. reboot the TC to lose the connections..
    Might take a network reboot.
That means restart the whole network from off.. start in order, modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap between them.
But from 5.6 utility you can disconnnect all users.

  • My macbook pro shuts down my wifi router

I have a mac book pro, and every time I try to use the WiFi after about 10 or 20 min the WiFi router will shut off. I would think that this was a problem with my router except that I can use my iPhone or smart TV with WiFi and the problem doesn't occur.

  • My Deskjet 3050 J610 will not connect to my Virgin WiFi router for use with Apple Mac laptop.

I live in the UK and have Broadband access via a Virgin connection and WiFi router. My Apple MacBook laptop connects to the WiFi with no difficulties. However I have an HP Deskjet 3050 J610 printer which will not connect to the router. When I try to connect, the blue light just keeps on flashing but a connection is not found. Consequently my MacBook cannot "see" the printer on the network. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Using Remote app on iPhone 5 without a separate internet connection and wifi router.

    Hi,
I need to be able to control iTunes within my MacBook Pro remotely. Using my mobile broadband service and wireless router I've been able to get the Remote app to allow my iPhone 5 to do the job nicely through Home Share.  So I went and bought a separate WiFi router and tried to do the same thing. Of course when it didn't work, I discovered that I need an internet connection and WiFi network to make the Home Sharing work.
So I got to thinking, can I create a WiFi hotspot using the Personal HotSpot functionality of my iPhone, set up Home Sharing on phone and MacBookPro and then use the Remote app. Ideally this would work as it seems all the key components are in place.
The MacBook Pro accepts the iPhone hotspot as a means of Home Sharing, however the iPhone won't use the personal hotspot to Home Share and I can't connect to the iPhone personal hotspot on the iPhone itself.
Does anyone know how to make this work for me? It would be such as neat solution if I can get it to work - not to mention the potential to save me about $200 (I need to set this model up for two people).
    Cheers
    Kathy

  • My iphone 5 does not remember the password of my home network. Well this is ot the case with my ipad. The wifi gets disconnected every 2 minutes. Its not any problem with my wifi router as my ipad and other devices work fine. So how do i fix this problem?

Well my iphone 5 does not remember my home network. This is not a problem with the wifi router as the ipad works absolutely fine. The wifi loses it connection in just 2 minutes. So could you please fix this problem.

Not unless the modem is causing a problem.
What you want to do is get it to work reliably over Ethernet first, then tackle wifi. Power off the modem. On your macbook, delete the Ethernet configuration and the Wifi configuration. Power up the modem, then connect the mac via Ethernet. Create the new Ethernet configuration and see if you can connect.

  • Macbook Pro Snow Leopard; WiFi keeps dropping, no IP Address

Macbook Pro Snow Leopard; WiFi keeps dropping. Issue is Macbook is not getting an IP address from the wireless routers DHCP Server. Tried all options in the forums. Reboot, changing security, PRAM reset .. nothing. Problem keeps happening. No issues on XP laptops and Nokia phones.
Even the iPhone, iPod and iPad seems to be fine. It is just the dang gam it Macbook pro and it is driving me crazy.
All fixes tried, changing wireless mode, security, PRAM ... only thing left is to rebuild the mac which i was hoping I can avoid somehow.
Any ideas to fix this would be great!

Change your router channel.  Sometimes this all you will have to do.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.
