Macbook as a present

Hi
I'm looking at buying my other half a macbook for her birthday. She works in Advertising and I know she uses a mac at work daily. I on the other hand no nothing about macs and want to know if buying a macbook over a macbook pro would be a false economy or not.
I know she wants to play around with imovies and art work. Would the macbook be apropriate?

Hi Milliz,
The macbook is a great present and by the sounds of things great for your/her needs. The main difference between the two (for a non mac person) is that the macbook doesnt have its own video card. This does not mean however that doing "arty" things is a no go. She will still be able to run photoshop, imovie, idvd, install a whole range of other apps and still be happy. I think that getting a macbook and upgrading the RAM to 1GB or even 2GB would be a wise choice in this situation and will save you a great deal of money for the use she will get out of it.
Anyway we cant persuade you but that is my two cents, nice guy to be getting such a nice present,
GOOD LUCK EITHER WAY

  • How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation?

How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation? I do not want to go to the projector just to turn it off and turn on again after a while? Is there a keyboard shortcut for that?

I want to be able to sleep the external display and at the same time do things in the MacBook.( This feature is useful for me so that I can prepare some things and so that my audience will not see what I am about to show them.)
Is there a feature for Mountain Lion?

What is the best way to connect macbook air to present power point presentations

Since you posted in the Thunderbolt Display Community, I am guessing you are attempting to connect a MacBook Air to a Thunderbolt Display, but since you tagged projector, it makes me doubt my assumption. Can you provide some more details on what you are trying to connecto your MacBook Air to?

  • HT2494 How do I connect my TV to my macbook air. The socket I used on my white macbook is not present?

Have just bought a Macbook Air and the socket I used to use to connect my Macbook (White) to the TV when watching video is missing. What can I do?

The new MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt port. Apple introduced this form factor with the Late 2008 model (then called MiniDisplay Port. I suspect your MacBook had a Mini-DVI port. So you'll need to purchase an adapter for this computer as well as any additional cabling.

Don't pay any mind to the fact that it says MiniDisplay Port and not Thunderbolt, it's backwards compatible.

  • Buying MacBook as a present

I decided to buy a present for my girlfriend, who is in Russia. After I buy I plan to send it with USPS or other postal service. Does anybody know about such special case. I definitely know that in case of buying a Dell laptop there are some discounts and some special programms. Are there some in Apple. Thank you so much...

The problem with buying a laptop in the US and then sending it to Europe is that you often run into problems with paying a huge customs tax at the border that completely eliminates the price advantage of buying the in the US. I don't know about Russia specifically, but generally the best way to do this is to buy it and then BRING it in person back to Europe. As far as special programs, can you be more specific about what you mean? If you mean that Dell computers cost LESS in Russia than in the US, then I am afraid that is not the case with Apple generally in Europe, though, again, I cannot speak for Russia. But generally, Apple is more expensive in Europe than in the States.

  • Does anyone know the name of the camera who shot the pictures present in the macbook pro retina ?

I saw many pictures in a macbook pro retina presented in a Apple Store and was shocked by the quality of the photos & Im asking if anyone knows the name & model of the camera.? thanks

Search for backup software on www.macupdate.com
SynchronizePro is just one. There are a dozen at least. SuperDuper is a volume cloning program that is popular too.

  • VGA identified at MacBook but no picture

I'm trying to use a HDTV with VGA input with my MacBook. The TV works perfectly with a PC, so it isn't the TV or the VGA cable.
I plugged in the Apple mini-DVI to VGA connector to the VGA cable; the TV is correctly recognized by the display preferences; I have matched the screen sizes for the TV and the MacBook display to 1024x768; I have turned mirroring on; everything looks perfect except nothing shows up on the TV.
One post helpfully suggested restarting after everything is set up for the correct resolution, so I did that. After restart, the TV responds promisingly with the letters VGA (indicating that it is getting a signal, I suppose) for about 1 second. This little hopeful glimmer occurs immediately before the startup "loading bar" (or whatever it is called) appears on the MacBook, and then darkness forever after. When the MacBook finishes its startup, it looks like it recognizes the VGA TV just as before.
From other posts, it looks like this is a common problem. What gives, Apple? If I tried to use my MacBook for a presentation, I'd be laughed off the stage. This is unacceptable.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate help on this. Frankly, I'm not hopeful, but I would love to be wrong.
The TV has a lot more inputs, so maybe something else will work better: any suggestions for a foolproof connection before I go out and spend more money on cables and adapters?
    Cheers!

i have a macbook black, i hooked it up perfectly with the mini dvi to vga cable.. you can try switching out the vga cable to another, sometimes different vga cables dont work.. or you could do the dvi to hdmi and connect via that way..

  • When is there going to be a new macbook pro/air release?

I have been saving my money up for sometime now to purchase either a new macbook pro or a new macbook air. I have been constantly checking the internet for any news regarding when the new releases of the macbook pro/air will be available. I was hoping that Apple would announce news regarding the new versions of the macbook when they presented the iPad but as you all probably know this did not happen.
My question is as follows: I do not want to purchase my new macbook until the new releases come out. With that being said I am growing impatient and have heard little news regarding this subject (presumably because of all the hype surrounding the iPad). Thus, could any of you more informed Apple analysts give me a ballpark figure on when you expect to see the new versions of the macbook pro/air for sale? I can and I will wait a couple of additional weeks for the new releases but I might cave in and buy one now if it is going to be a while before the new versions are released.
    Thanks,
    John Michael

You're in for a very long wait then, because there will always be something better, faster, sexier, newer around the corner ...
All hardware manufacturers operate in product cycles and you're right in thinking that if a model has been out for 18-24 months it's "likely" a revision is due, but that's a guess and nobody here knows (or if they do they are bound by NDA's not to reveal anything).

  • Updating the MacBook pro line: how does Apple usually do it?

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy a MacBook pro and I need your help.
I was wondering if a new pro could be presented in the next months (due to the passage to face time in all Mac products). My questions: has every MacBook updates been presented during a public apple event?
I mean: could apple decide to update the pro line simply modifying it on the store, or it usually does it only organizing a public event? My memory is not so good so I ask if you remember what is the habit in this case, considering that the pro line has been updated many times but I don't remember if presented in a public event or not.

  • External monitor problem macbook pro mid 2012

Hi everyone i have a really big problem.
I add a new SSD OWC extreme 6G and a Data Doubler with the original HDD of my macbook pro, i follow all the instructions, i install the latest OSX and install all my apps, till there everything went well and awesome, really fast and i was really happy, but when i connect my external monitor a Samsung SyncMadster T220M my macbook pro freeze but if i disconnet goes back to normal.
I shutdown and restart, connect again and the same.
If i shoutdown the mac and connect the monitor and then turn on, the OS does not start and stay loading.
SSD is the main Hard Drive and the standard HDD is the secondary for DATA
I follow almost all the advice on http://blog.alutam.com/2012/04/01/optimizing-macos-x-lion-for-ssd/ except the advice only for SSD because i have SSD+HDD
also i download the app Chameleon SSD Optimiser and turn on everything
    I really need help!!!
    PLEASE HELP!!!
I USE MY MACBOOK PRO FOR PRESENTATIONS!!!

I had never heard of "Chameleon SSD Optimiser" but I took a look at it after reading your message... I'm not sure that 'turning everything on' was a wise idea... enabling TRIM is fine, of course. I wouldn't think that 'Chameleon' options would have anything to do with your problem, however.
What sort of adapter are you using with your Samsung monitor? I would imagine that there is either a hardware fault with the adapter, or with either your Mac port or the port on the monitor.

  • My macbook pro doesn't communicate with video projectors anymore

Since a while, I cannot use my macbook for video presentations anymore.
The video beamer doesn't "see" my laptop, and in the display screen, no other screens are indicated.
Anybody out there who can help?

Make sure the discs are free of finger prints. The optical drive cannot read a disc with smudges and dust.
Check Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure:  CDs, DVDs, and iPods, is selected.

  • OSX Lion cannot be installed on used macbook pro

    Dear all,
I inherited an old used macbook pro (2009 model) from a colleague.  He cleaned it and it was ready to reinstall when I received it.  I purchased a new OSX Lion set to install.  As the macbook is a present for my daughters birthday, I purchased the software on het apple ID.
When installing (after entering the related apple ID) I get the following message:
This product is currently not available. Try again later.
Can I solve this without having to go to an Apple dealer.  My girls birthday is this Friday, and I'd like to have the macbook ready before that date.
    Thanks!

In order to install Lion (which all 2009 MBPs are capable of) you need to have Snow leopard (10.6.8) installed first.  The simplest path is to order this disk from Apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Then download the combo update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then the MBP will be ready for a Lion install.
    Ciao.

  • Issues with this MacBook, including a new random shutting off.

I received a MacBook as a present in late 2008. It served me well until in April 2010, I spilt water on it and it died. I then bought a new one in August of 2010, but I didn't purchase it in the store, I used a friend's discount at Apple and it was shipped to my house days later. From the first day I started having issues with it. I have to constantly be saving my word documents because word freezes all the time & I'm constantly have to force-quit and restart word. This Mac also seems more glitchy than my old one, which is Ironic considering it's the new model. In addition, I had tons of issues with iMovie and uploading to YouTube. It would spend 2 hours trying to upload in HD, then when it was "finished" and error report would pop up.
And for the latest and greatest issue, It has recently started randomly shutting down. I've been able to cope with the previous bugs but this one scares me. It will randomly shut down (WITH FULL BATTERY) and wont boot up again for a while. I was so sure I'd lost it this morning but luckily it came back up. I also have been getting the grey-screen and pop up that says "please restart your device" and whence I do, the computer asks me, do you want to report this to Apple? And I always do because I want to know whats going on. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions??
Also, to my regret, I didn't by the Apple Care with this computer because I spend 4 months saving up for this one and didn't have enough to by the warranty with it... So I'm at a loss for what to do. PLEASE help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like a lemon. Take it in to a store and tell them your experience and financial constraint. We are just end users here, and can't say how they might respond. In the future remember take care of issues in first two weeks or less, and check the store return policy when you buy.
