Macbook as a router for Xbox Live

I just recently received my Macbook, thanks to two day shipping. I am very impressed with it. But that's beside the point.
I need assistance creating a connection from my Original Xbox, through my Macbook, to an Airport wireless connection. I would do this with a Linksys router, but I'm not dropping 70 bucks to broadcast my connection around the neighborhood.
So, I've read all the other xbox connection threads. None of the suggestions work for me. No matter what I do, I always get a DNS Not Found or other DNS error. I've enabled Sharing, turned off passive FTP, made sure the cables were connected, and set everything on my Xbox to automatic.
I checked my Network Overview page and it showed my built-in Ethernet connection as Yellow, and my bi Ethernet as having a self-assigned IP address.
Maybe I should take my automatic settings on my xbox off? Help. Please.

What kind of internet connection are you using? I assume you have a wireless router you are connecting to? You may want to check its settings so that it is not restricting mac addresses.
I cant remember which ethernet cable I used, but have you tried using a crossover cable between the xbox and mac?
As an example, I tried connecting my box through my laptop once at my university (gotta love those lcd projectors). But their wireless network required each device to log on through a web browser which xbox does not have.
25=wow. I think I'm like 17 or something on snipers.

  • Port Forwarding for Xbox Live

My eyes are burning from trolling the boards all day. Just picked up an AEBS (12:33 PM CST, 4/20/08), firmware's at 7.3.1, connected the ol' xbox and got a "moderate" on my NAT test. Thats fine, totally expected, no big deal, right? So here's what I do:
    1. Assign static ip ads to all machines on the network (xbox is 10.0.1.3)
    2. Check to see if NAT is enabled in airport utility: Yep.
    3. Enter in the ports as usual:
    Public UDP Port(s): 88,3074
    Public TCP Port(s): 3074
    Private IP Address: 10.0.1.3
    Private UDP Port(s): 88,3074
    Private TCP Port(s): 3074
The above, BTW, is exact as far as commas and spaces go.
    4. Update!
    Then, NAT test= Moderate.
OK, it'd be nice if there was a standardized way to forward ports on all routers, I think, no big deal, just need to do a little tinkering.
I put a space after the comma between 88 and 3074, i.e., instead of 88,3074 I did 88, 3074. Moderate. I tried putting a dash in there (88-3074) wouldn't even let me do that, but of course we all already knew that. Tried rearranging all the ports randomly (3074,88). Nope. Well, even though I just gave the machine a static ip address, might as well try a DHCP lease: enter Airport ID. Nothing. Try it again with Ethernet ID. Nothing. I've got an idea, I'll make multiple separate port mapping profiles:
    xbox 1: Public UDP Port(s): 88...
    xbox 2: Public UDP Port(s): 3074...etc.
    NAT test= Moderate.
Hmm, Oh they make port forwarding management software? Lighthouse, eh? I'll try that...oh, it doesn't do anything: Moderate.
I tried a bunch of other things that I knew would be futile, but I've been working on this thing for a couple of hours now and I can't remember them...Oh and by the way, for those not familiar with xbox live: "Moderate"= not good.
I'll telepathically make you feel better if you can help me out.
    Love ya,
    Boo

Thanks for the prompt reply Duane. Just to clarify: I need another wireless router? I thought airport express was one. I was trying to configure the ports of the airport express's basestation. My connection system is:
-An ADSL 2mbps connection that comes into my home from a phone line and into a D-link GLB 802C modem
-This connects to an Airport Express
-My macbook pro uses the net through the wifi signal provided
-I connect the macbook pro to the xbox through an ethernet cable (mainly because it's far from the adsl router)
I have read that one can forward ports with airport express...

  • Settings don't have MTU settings for Xbox Live

I've been having problems connecting to Xbox Live. All of my PCs wired and wireless can connect to the internet except for my 2 Xbox 360s one wired and one wireless. Some times it says that there isn't enough MTU or can't connect to the network when I follow their steps to fix it. It just keeps dying on me.
I was wondering if the Configuration page has MTU settings?

I don't know which modem/router you are using (guessing it's some model by Actiontek) but read my post about getting connected to Xbox Live with an Actiontek router.  Even if you don't have the same model, you probably will find something useful there.  Also, I said this in the post but in case you don't see it, with these modems/routers, you cannot connect wirelessly, you must connect by ethernet or you will get errors.  The link is below, hope this helps!

  • Trying to change NAT connection from moderate NAT connection to an open NAT connection for XBOX LIVE

Hi, I have a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router/WRT160Nv2 and I have been trying to change my NAT connection from a moderate NAT connection to a open NAT connection for my Xbox Live on my Xbox 360. I can sign into my Xbox Live account but it is working on a moderate NAT connection. I have already enabled the UPnP and put in the proper port numbers. After doing that I signed into my Xbox Live on my Xbox 360 and tested my Xbox Live connection and still it says that I a moderate NAT connection. I do not know what elso to do and I would greatly appreciate step by step help from anybody who knows what they are doing. PLEASE HELP ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!
    Thank you

A known issue with Linksys routers is the NAT Type 3 or anything related to dropping of Internet connectivity during play time.  Network Address Translation (NAT) is the ability of a router or firewall to translate a public IP address to a private IP address and vice versa.  It adds security to the network by keeping the private IP addresses hidden from the outside world.

  • Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?
    Thank you!

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

  • Not enough MTU's for xbox live?

I've been on Xbox Live for about a year and I've had no problems. Last weekend I tried logging on and I'm getting a message saying I don't have enough MTU's to connect. It says I need 1364 or higher. I am running off and Airport Extreme router and I haven't changed routers since I've had Live. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance.
    Tom

The MTU setting is under System Preferences-->Network. Click ADVANCED in the lower right corner, then the far-right ETHERNET.
You'll note the bottom item is MTU, and is probably set at 1500--more than enough for XBL. If you want to change it, change Configure from Automatic to MANUAL and that'll give you access to MTU settings.
As others have mentioned, it's very possible this is all connected to the XBL outage today. However, I haven't been able to log onto XBL for the last couple days, so didn't start troubleshooting it until today. Going to wait it out, though, and check after the outage. Seems a waste right now to bother.

  • Need help opening NAT type to OPEN on a model WRT54GS router for xbox 360

I have tried from other people's advice and when i test Xbox Live i always get a Moderate NAT type. I am becoming frustrated with how it is not working and I am hoping someone can help me. Please leave advice/suggestions and thank you for your time.

Open the setup page of the router using 192.168.1.1 by putting the password as admin with username as blank & click the Administration tab & on the same page you will see UPNP.You need to select it as disable in order to help opening NAT type to OPEN.

  • Open my NAT for Xbox live

Please I need help opening up this NAT on my time capsule. It's making my Xbox lag and drop out of games. I have 3 boxes, 2 iPhones, and desk top iMac.

    Does that mean 3 xboxes??
Basically the TC is the wrong router for you.. xbox is designed to work with upnp that is vista compatible at least. It can then automatically open the required ports.. you cannot run multiple xboxes with fixed port forwarding as it is impossible to set a port to forward to more than one location. Upnp can negotiate a different port.. nothing else can. Apple of course could never use a MS designed automatic port opening system so adopted their own, NAT-PMP.. which is totally great for when apple introduce their game console.. but useless for your xbox.
Buy a router that is known to work with xbox.. bridge the TC and plug it into the router and use it for backups or wireless or even a very limited switch.. just not NAT.

  • Hook my Airport Express to my Extreme for Xbox Live?

I have an Airport Extreme router that feeds the WiFi through my house. I also have an Airport Express that is in my living room which connects to my stereo to wirelessly stream my iTunes.
I'd also like to connect the wire from my Xbox Live to the Airport Express to get it online. Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it?

    Try the following:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Enable Ethernet Clients"
Click Update to save your changes
Test first with a laptop by turning off the wireless on the laptop and connecting via ethernet. Open your browser and you should have an internet connection. Try another ethernet cable if you don't have a good connection.
If still no luck, power down the entire network.Start the modem first, then the device connected to the modem and so one at time until all devices are powered up.
Everything above assumes that you have the Express set to "join a wireless network" in the normal AirTunes configuration.

  • Opening Time Capsules NAT for Xbox Live

Yeah I've tried everything but can't seem to get my NAT to register as "Open" on my 360. Any Ideas?
And no none of of the other threads with the same problem gave me any help and my posts went ignored!

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...Click on "Administration" tab and disable the option UPnP and click Save Settings...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done...
    2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
3)Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...
    4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox..IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...

  • NAT Open? For Xbox Live? Where is NAT?

Yes, I recently have got Xbox Live with my Xbox 360, however some of my friends can't connect to me because it says my NAT is not "Open" it's "Limited"
I went in my router settings, and couldn't find anything that said NAT Open or NAT Limited, all i saw was NAT One - to - One.
Which i didn't understand so i didn't mess with it.
Linksy's didn't help either, they said they'd patch me through to another guy, an Hour and a half later i hung up.

If you are in the Xbox 360 dashboard, go to the rightmost tab (it's purple) and scroll down to "Network Settings."  When you go there, one of the options will be to "Test Xbox Live Connection" (or something like that.)  Run that test, and the current NAT status will show at the bottom.
The other router setting I have seen mentioned is setting Upnp to enabled.
(What kind of router are you using?)

  • I need port forwarding help for xbox live. I have a WRT54G router.

I forwarded the ports but it still says I have a moderate NAT. I think I need to get a static IP address on my PC and I know how but what DNS servers do I put in. When I made my static IP the internet didn't work and I figured it was the wrong DNS servers. Do I also have to switch anything in the router settings? Like switch from DHCP to static IP? Any help would be appreciated.
PS. I know nothing about routers and will need to be told where to switch things.
    TYTY

in order to open the ports for the x-box , u need to assign a static ip address on the x-box itself and not the pc.....it should be anywhere in between the following range
    192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99 or
    192.168.1.150 to 192.168.1.254
the dns numbers would be the one from the status page on the router ui...to access the router ui , you need to type http://192.168.1.1 .. logon using "admin" password......on the setup page , adjust the mtu settings to 1365.....under "applications and gaming" , open ports 88 and 3074 and give the ip address of the x-box...

  • Using regular Airport in a similar manner of Airport Express for xbox live

This may seem like a weird question to ask, but I am trying to find a way around spending $100 on the Xbox360 wireless adapter.
To my understanding, if I were to buy an Airport Express (in addition to my Airport Extreme), I could plug it into the power outlet, then plug an ethernet cable from it into my xbox360. Since I have an Airport Extreme, I could send the signal to the Express and via ethernet cable, "wirelessly" connect my 360.
Now, I don't have an Express. I have my Extreme, and my old regular Airport. Is there any way to use my older airport to semi-wirelessly power my 360's internet? For example, plug it in right next to my 360 and use the ethernet out to go into the 360.
    sorry for the long question

Hello theaddestfilm. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Yes, this is correct. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can be configured into a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) to provide wired access for the Xbox 360.
Now, I don't have an Express. I have my Extreme, and my old regular Airport. Is there any way to use my older airport to semi-wirelessly power my 360's internet? For example, plug it in right next to my 360 and use the ethernet out to go into the 360.
The older Dual-Ethernet (Snow) or Graphite base stations do not support WDS. If you have the Snow, you can connect it to your AEBS via Ethernet, and then, connect the Xbox 360 to its LAN port.
