MacBook audio issues connecting to HDTV

I have a MacBook 6.1. I want to watch it through my HDTV. I know there are lots of variables, so I hope I can be specific enough for advice. I bought the mini display port for HDMi; I plugged it into my computer and the HDMI into my TV and have no problems with the video.
It's audio. I know that cable doesn't carry audio, so I tried a 3.55 jack with the RC (red white) Y adapter. No sound. I checked my computer's audio settings. It's only coming up as "headphones" /headphone port. I can't get any sound through my TV. I restarted everything together, took it apart, restarted - and did every variation of that I could think of. Someone had said that the RC adapter worked for them but I think I head a roadblock here.
My TV doesn't have a DVI input, so that's not an option. It's a Panasonic (crap, I am forgetting all the rest of the specs) and the audio options insist that the HDMI in "selects analog audio input whrn using a DVI cable; HDMI cable carries digital audio."
I feel like there's a setting on my Mac that I am missing. Any suggestions?

There's no setting on the MacBook to combine audio with the video on HDMI. That's all on the TV.
If you have the  Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

I use a MiniDisplay to VGA connector when I use my macbook air to connect to a monitor. My macbook is detecting its there, is there a certain setting on a TV that I would need to switch

That depends on the TV. You'll have to research its instruction manual.

  • MacBook Pro issues connecting to Gmail, Facebook, and other websites

    Hi,
In the past week or so, I have had problems connecting to Gmail, Facebook, and other websites on my MacBook. When I try to open Gmail, I get the following message "Safari can't verify the identity of the website "accounts.google.com". The certificate for this website is invalid..." etc. It asks if I want to connect anyways, and I do, but then once I'm on Gmail, I can't use gchat and all of the buttons (delete, reply, etc) are blank. When I try to connect to Facebook, I just get a mostly blank page. I'll include screenshots in case that's helpful.
When I try using Firefox, it doesn't allow me to connect to either website at all.
I hope someone can help me with this issue!

On your iMac, open System Preferences > Date & Time  then select the Date & Time tab.
Make sure:  Set date and time automatically is selected.
Then select the Time Zone tab.
Make sure:  Set time zone automatically using current location is selected.

  • Audio not working when connected to HDTV

I connected my MacBook Pro to my Samsung HDTV LN40D503F6F and also connected an HDMI cable to the TV using Apple mini DVI cable. I tried connecting to both HDMI/DVI 1 and HDMI 2. Video works fine when connected to both the HDMI ports, but the audio didnt work. I also purchased an a 3.5 mm audio to RCA cable and tried switichin between both the HDMI ports but still it is not working. Any solution would be great. Thanks !!!

    Hi:
While trying to help you, I was looking along the same lines as you were (I assume).
I did a search by the IDT 92HD73E audio codec and all I could find were drivers for system boards with Intel processors such as the driver you tried unsuccessfully.
I have finally found a W8.1 driver for that codec from a desktop PC with an AMD processor and chipset.
    See if this one works...

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Update: audio problems connecting macbook pro to insignia TV: resolved

There have been posts from users who have expressed frustration that they cannot get audio when they attempt to connect their macbook pro to an Insignia TV.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2192206
Insignia customer service also attempts to state that the pre-April 2010 macbook pros cannot get audio output to the TV, because the units are designed to get the audio on the same HDMI and no alternative audio input is available on the TV.

For the Insignia models (from 2010 onwards and possible some from 2009 as well), there is a simple workaround that does not seem to be published elsewhere on the internet (as far as I can see):
Use the HDMI port 1 only (audio does not work with port 2, port 3 or port 4) to connect your macbook and you will receive 1080p video signal.
Use a mini stereo audio cable (example link below) and connect your macbook audio output to a designated green color coded audio port on the TV located right next to the VGA. You will receive full stereo audio.
Example link for mini stereo audio cable:

I recently acquired a new Insignia TV and had sound trouble.  I went to Best Buy to inquire about the cable in the link above and the sales manager had doubts.  He recommended a RCA cable with a male connection at both ends.  The RCA jack is on the bottom edge of the TV display next to the VGA connection.  The sound worked perfectly using the RCA cable from the headphone jack on the Mac.  I connected the video with a HDMI adapter from the monitor mirroring port.

  • Audio Issues with MacBook Pro (Late 2008)

I am seeing an occasional issue with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). The Audio will go out... and instead you will just hear static-like clicking sounds when and audio even happens. For example... when you have the up/down volume notification on... and you change the audio volume.. you hear clicks. Or... when you open up a file that has audio.. you will hear the static-like click when the audio starts to try to play.
The work around per-se is to completely shutdown and turn the notebook back on. A simple restart does not seem to fix it... it looks like the system needs to have a bit of energy drain first. Which... worries me that this is a hardware issue and not a driver issue.
Wondering how many others are seeing this???

I went to and Apple Support Center last week and I asked some questions about audio because my MBP was having troubles too. The tech told me audio issues are very frequent on these machines and sometimes you have to change a part of the soundcard. He also added you have to bring the MBP to a support center if you're having the problem several times - in my case I'm waiting the next "crash" since I had only 2 issues so far... If you're under warranty go for a check up and see if it really needs assistance. Goodbye

  • My MacBook Pro will connect to WiFi but will not work in one location but will at others. I have the same issue with my IPhone 4S at the same location.

My MacBook Pro will connect to Wifi at one location (this is a secure location) but will not allow access to the internet.  I will put in the password but will not display page.  Other wifi capable devises do not have this issue but my Mac and my Iphone 4S will not work.  I have tried restarting the router.  All other wifi locations I have been to have not had this issue.  Any suggestions? I am realtively new to Apple products (less than a year) so any advise is greatly appreciated.

The other devices that are working got on with the same password.  It says it is connected.  Just nothing works on the internet.

  • Macbook Fios Wireless Connection Issues

Hi everyone. All of a sudden today my Macbook is having issues connecting to my Verizon Fios Wireless Internet. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or is aware of any problems with compatibility or something. Any tips or advice? Thanks!

Finally got an answer! Thanks to all the folks I talked to, one of them taught me a little trick that I wanted to share. What worked was renaming the router, then making the macbook connect to it as if it was a new network - it connected and stayed online. Then renaming the router back and connecting to it again as it were a new network and it connected and has stayed connected. Hope this works for anyone else having this issue!

  • MacBook Pro 15" connectivity Issue.  Everything else works great; PC's and smaller MacBooks, but everyone with a 15" model is having connection issues.

So I have a 15" Macbook Pro.  About two months ago I started having issues connecting it on my network at work.  Every other 15" MacBook pro is having the same issue.  When the wireless connects, it often comes back with a connection timeout, or it connects to the router, and DHCP doesn't give it an IP addess.  Static IP doesn't work.  There are the odd place where I can connect regularly, but they are few and far between.  I have great singnal strength, but it's just really flaky.
My network Admin can't figure it out.  all the PCs are working fine, and even MacBooks and 13" Macbook Pros are working.  The problem seems to be common to MacBook Pro 15", AppleTV, iPad.  Anyone got any ideas?

    Hello Sepehr.E,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.
I'm not sure if you have tried these steps yet, but I recommend following the steps in the following article to resolve an issue like the one you described:

  • Audio Issues on the Macbook

I have had my white MacBook since late 2006... And currently out of nowhere, I have been getting these audio issues. When I am watching a video on youtube or streaming another video on any browser (Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox), the audio starts to go awry and teary... The video continues to play but the audio continues to make this annoying screetchy noise... I test my audio elsewhere by playing music in iTunes and the songs take the same effect... Initially, I would just restart the computer and things are back to normal. But, I have realized that I can just restart the browser and things are back to normal. I am not sure how to fix this issue. I have not dropped it or anything. I am currently running the new Snow Leopard 10.6.2

I think I have the same problem with my black Macbook from late 2006. You explain the problem exactly as I experience it too. The audio suddenly, and out of no where, starts to fade out and back again, and becomes very screetchy. Over time it fades out slowly and becomes completely silent. Videos on Youtube keeps playing.
I've had the problem in both Safari, Spotify and iTunes. So it seems that it is system wide. A restart of the application or just wait, makes the problem go away by itself.
Very annoying. I'm running 10.6.3 and had the problem just a moment ago.

  • HT2498 issues connecting my Nikon D7000 to MacBook Pro.

I suddenly have issues connecting my Nikon D7000 to my MacBook Pro. Nikon has the latest firmware and MacBook is running 10.8.3. My camera will not show up anymore as i connect it by USB. Anyone?

Well there is if the camera once connected to the Mac, Nikon might have a different name for it - it's the option to connect to a computer.
However, if it works with the Windows box then the issue is unlikely to be the Camera and more likely the Image Capture end of your Mac.
Have you tried restarting the Mac?

  • Apple TV 2 Optical Audio Issues

    Hey everyone.
I'm usually a DIY kind of person, but at a certain point I just need some help. I recently bought an Apple TV 2nd gen, which I really enjoy. However, being an owner of multiple Apple devices, it's somewhat conditioned me to expect a level of fluidity with everything of theirs I buy. The problem I'm having is with the audio, and it might seem small, but it's driving me nuts.
My setup is a mut. I have a 24" or so Samsung HDTV where I have the HDMI plugged into. I use an optical audio cable to connect the Apple TV to an ancient LGDVT418 receiver, to which a Bose Acoustimass III speaker set is connected. It seems like the problem could be in the receiver, but even though it's very old, it's worked with just about anything I've hooked up to it in the past. The smaller issue is the fact that the clicking noises in the menu only sound every once in a while, a problem that doesn't happen when the sound is coming from the HDTV.
The bigger problem is the "delay" in almost everything I stream. I use quotes because as a musician, delay means there's a gap between what's being played and when you hear it. This is different. On Netflix, for example, when I start a TV show, it loads properly, but there's about two seconds before the audio actually starts playing. The video is perfectly in sync though. At first I tried to ignore it, but it's really started to bug me. This also happens with movies and TV shows on iTunes, and especially when using AirPlay from my iPhone or macbook.
Any help would be much appreciated!

    The manual says :
         Optical digital audio port
Connect Apple TV to a home theater receiver that has an optical digital audio port, using an optical digital audio (also called S/PDIF or TOSLINK) cable
You use an adapter to connect the optical digital audio port to your Beatbox? How does that work? What does the manufacturer say about digital to analog conversion?
