Macbook battery cycles

Hello, what are the battery cycles for a late 2009 MacBook.  I see that it is starting to drain my battery like really fast, here I have been typing this and have watched my battery go down 10%.  So I bought this battery app and it says that the cycles is at 350 I do not know if that is good or bad, so I just want some feedback and sugestions.
Thanks

Generally batteries with a cycle count of over 300 are considered depleted. Not that they won't function but they won't do as well as they did previously. I would suggest a new battery. You can purchase from Apple for about $129 in the USA. You may be able to find 3rd party batteries cheaper on eBay.

Best of luck.

I have 385 battery cycles on my 2009 MacBook Pro 17—no problems yet.  How much longer can I expect the battery to hold up, what is the process to get a new battery, and how much will it cost?

Here is a copy & paste straight out of the operating system:
The battery condition tells you whether your battery is functioning normally and approximately how much charge it can hold.
    Here are the possible conditions:
Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new.
Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it did when it was new. You can continue to use the battery until you replace it without harming your computer.
Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Have your computer checked by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer.

  • MacBook stopped counting battery cycles

It seems that my MB doesn't count my battery cycles anymore. I calibrated last week and since calibration I used it two times till 75% and charged it again. But the number of cycles is still 7 which is the same as before calibration. Does anybody know why this is and how it could be solved?
    Thanks!

Hi Rutgergr: I really don't think there is an issue to solve. You used your battery until there was 75% remaining, meaning that you used 25%. Doing this 2 times would mean that you have actually used approximately 1/2 of a battery cycle. Please let us know if I have misinterpreted your post.
Assuming that 7 cycles were recorded before the calibration step, that would mean at least 100% of the standard full capacity would have been used and it should have progressed to at least 8 cycles after the calibration and the two 25% cycles. I thought that battery calibration used pretty much 100% of the battery capacity by design.
I actually freaked out the last time I did battery calibration. iStat was reporting 99% battery health once I turned it on - the first time I'd seen it less than 100%. Then I let it fully charge up and it was reporting 100% again. It was kind of strange when it went to sleep and then precipitously shut off. Everything looked OK as soon as I powered it back on in the morning.

  • Is my MacBook battery dead or is there something else going on?

    Hi
My macbook has an "x" on the battery symbol and says "no battery available" on it. I have tried all suggestions I have found, like, replace battery, reset power management, reset PRAM and still have the "x". It wont even turn on now with the battery inserted and at teh moment I can only use it when battery is taken out and Im plugged into power using Magsafe adaptor. Laptop is about 2.5 years old. I did only notice this hapening after I installed SL but I dont know if that has anything to do with it. Is my battery dead and if so if I buy new battery will that fix it or could it be soimething else. I did check battery cycle count a few days ago and all was grand but I cant check it now as when I insert battery laptop turns off!
Any help is greatly appreciated. THanks

Do a reset of the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Try carefully cleaning the contact points on both the battery and the MacBook with a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
If neither of those do the trick, your battery is likely toast. If you are under the 3-year AppleCare, you can try calling and they may offer you a free replacement. If you get a replacement and the same thing happens--your MacBook shuts down with the battery in it or can't see a battery--then you have a much more serious hardware problem.

  • Is my MacBook battery defective?

    Hi all,
My MacBook Pro 13" late 2011 is having some battery charging problems. I don't have an apple charger, though I've been using one from eBay for over 12 months with no problems until the past month or so.
Three things happen. It either says the battery is not charging when plugged in, charges for about 10-15 mins then doesn't charge, or my computer will turn off when I move it (even with charge).
My Mum has another non apple charger for her MacBook Air mid 2011, which does the same to my computer as my charger. Both of our chargers work 100% perfectly on her computer and have never caused her to experience any problems.
According to my system report, I've had 621 battery cycles and it's in normal condition. I didn't have any problems until I updated to Yosemite.
I'd take my computer into an apple store, but the closest one to my house is over an hour away and I would only like to take it in if I have to.
    Thanks everyone

From what can be determined from Apple's documentation on the subject:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    Your New Notebook
Your new Apple notebook features advanced battery chemistry that greatly extends the battery’s lifespan. The built-in battery of your MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity.
So, if yours is down to 82% health with only 166 cycles, it looks like something is wrong. Give Apple a call, and see what they say.

  • Macbook Battery Problem

Hi all, this is my first post, but something weird happened to my macbook that I have to share with you.
Ok, my Macbook Core Duo 2.0GHz (1st generation) have had no problem during its first and half year. Then I left the notebook sitting at home for one month as I was away on business. Came back, the machine won't start, used AC adaptor and showed the battery not charging, "x" and everything. My warranty expired, so I bought a new battery. Once I got that, it worked fine for almost 7 months.
Another business trip left my macbook for 1 month, I came back, the battery is dead again!!! So I went to apple support and bought another new battery. This time I installed it at home, and it doesn't charge what-so-ever. I tried everything from SMU reset, PMU reset, P-RAM reset. NOTHING WORKED.
So I took a friend's macbook battery to try, and it worked! I can charge that battery with my macbook, and my battery won't charge on his macbook. So scientifically I thought its the battery defect. I went to Apple Care and they say they will replace it for me, but think that it should be my macbook's problem. Must be the Logic Board, I explained why I disagree, and that the battery came with only one LED blinking when I got home to charge, the current was already too low to charge.
Anyways, I was able to buy a second-hand battery really cheap but with limited life-span and use it until my replacement battery returns. Everything seem fine and I can charge it up to 100% although it will only last me 50-mins, still not bad, right?
I was reluctant to completely drain this battery now since I am afraid it will drop to zero and won't recharge like the other ones.
I am using Boot Camp, and Vista as well as OS X. Suddenly today, two days after I bought the 2nd hand battery, I was using Vista to show my friend the battery problem is fixed. But suddenly out of nowhere the battery dropped from 95% charged to 0% in seconds. It shuts down automatically, and the battery was flashing one LED indicating it's dying.
I started back in Mac OS X and found the charger able to recharge, but it fixed at 0% for 20 minutes. I thought I am screwed and went out for a smoke. I came back to see the battery charging back to 5% and then slowly to 10%, and 20%, suddenly it went back to 85% in seconds, and then 100%. I try to unplug it and it seemed fine. I left it on without the adapter for 20 minutes, the battery drain normally, to 70% (it's fine considering the battery was 2nd hand) My friend thought I should try to switch back to Vista to see if the same thing will occur. So I did, and before the Vista screen came up, the macbook blacked out. I checked the battery indicator and it's flashing one LED again!!!
So I switched back to Mac side and re-do the charging, this time it took longer to get back to +90%, I thought this is normal, 'cause I did use the battery longer on the Mac side before switching to Vista for the test.
I thought to myself, why Vista drained my battery, and then I remember the first battery that died on me was about the time I switched the PC side to Vista. Prior to that, the PC side was using XP. The second time it died it was in Vista as well. I also remember I wanted to reduce the size of my PC partition, so I trimmed off unnecessary features like hibernation by (Powercfg -h off). It saved 2G in size but it may be causing some problem to the charging circuit for the Mac-hardware??? Don't know for sure.
So I erased my Vista partition, and re-installed XP. Since then I tried both sides without adaptor, usually for 10-minutes or less, and no sudden dropped to 0% occurred since.
Everything else is working fine with my macbook, except the power features. Right now at least I can charge the battery, but I am always worried about when or IF the battery will dropped off and kill itself.
I am waiting for the replacement battery to return from APPLE, and hopefully when it returns, my Macbook will be able to recognize the DEFAULT low-charge of a new battery. I'm still not sure if my macbook is defective, and if it did killed the first battery replacement they gave me a few days ago. If it did kill a decent battery, will it kill this new replacement as well??
I know for a fact that the reason why the machine won't charge the battery is because the current of the battery has become too low for the machine to be able to charge it. If the current becomes lower, the "X" will occur suggesting that the machine doesn't even recognize it's a battery. But what I want to know is what caused the battery to drop to such a low current if I turned off the macbook during storage.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I have to be clear on all the details if I want help, I suppose. Right now my question is (1) Why is this occuring?? (2) Am I right in assuming that by removing Vista with XP, the problem will not repeat?? (3) Is it likely for any new or 2nd hand functioning battery to drop to the state of the other battery any time soon?? (4) Am I doing proper care for my Macbook, and what should I do in the future to avoid the same problem from occuring??

    gpotts,
Thanks again, here's my battery profile: (keep in mind this is the 2nd hand battery I am profiling) BTW, something happened when I was doing this message, I left the notebook on for about 20 minutes, it dropped from +90% to 48%, macbook prompted me that the battery is running low. I plugged the adaptor and it went back to +95% within minutes...
Good thing is, I haven't seen the sudden drop to 0% ever since I removed Vista, and also I am able to charge my battery everytime I try now, no more "NOT CHARGING" or "X" indication.
    Any clues??? Thanks in advance.

  • Leaving MacBook Battery in on constant AC power

I use my macbook everyday at home as my main computer and I have it plugged into A/C power 100% of the time. Is it alright to leave the batter in, or should I take it out? I have been told that leaving the battery in will cause it to die sooner, but I wanted to see what everyone else has to say about this.
    Thanks.

It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

  • What EXACTLY is a "battery cycle"?

    Hi all,
We have 3 MacBook Pros. My battery has 516 "cycles" and is beginning to act a bit flukey. I've read quite a bit about his and everyone talks about the Apple warranty is good for up to 300 cycles, average life should be 500 cycles - everything looks normal that mine is dying! It's 2 years old anyway. My question . . .
WHAT EXACTLY constitutes a cycle? If I use 1/2 a charge, down to 50% and then charge it full . . . does that count as a cycle? Or . . . should I drain it to zero if I can and recharge that - and that is 1 cycle? Does it count as a cycle everytime I top it off? Or doest it have to be drained to a certain point to be considered a cycle?
What is the magic % if that's so? Does anyone know how Apple does this? I'm just curious? Why run up the "cycles" if you don't have to? Thanks a lot, if anyone knows this!
    Larry

A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could use your notebook for an hour or more one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so you may take several days to complete a cycle.

  • Macbook battery won't charge suddenly

I'm having a problem with my macbook battery.
My mac won't seem to charge for some reason. Earlier today my mac showed an "X" in the battery on the menu bar. It wouldn't charge and the magsafe didn't light any color. But now the magsafe is not lit up any color and the mac is not charging eventhough it it plugged in. Any idea on what to do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X is telling you that the battery has to be replaced as it's damaged.
If you have an Early 2008 or older MacBook Pro, you can buy the battery and install it yourself > http://store.apple.com/us/go/product/MA348LL/A
If you have a Late 2008 or newer MacBook Pro, take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get it replaced. You can also replace it yourself, but you will void the warranty if it's in warranty and the cost difference is small

  • Apple wont replace MacBook battery

    Hi
I have a Macbook core duo. I bought it in November 2006, so it is about 18 months old. I have the extended AppleCare warranty on it.
Using coconut battery, my MacBook's battery has 188 charge cycles with 1823mah capacity left, or 32% capacity.
I was just at an Apple store where the genius said that this is normal and it is not defective as there is no "x" in the battery bar. So, Apple will not replace it.
I have an iBook from 2003 with 348 load cycles that still has 72% capacity, so I think that the macbook battery is defective, as it only lasts for 45 minutes now.
Should Apple replace the battery? How can I prove to the genius that it should be replaced?
    Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    First, try resetting the SMC:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
If you call in, they will have you try resetting the SMC first (at least, they had me do that).
See if that improves the battery's performance. That did double my battery time from 46 minutes to an hour and 27 minutes. However, my battery only had about 160 cycles on it, and an hour and 27 minutes seemed too little to me, so I called back. They shipped me a new battery.
    Good luck.

  • Battery Cycles and "Sleep Cycles"

Last week my battery died on me, but couldn't get a replacement on my Applecare because i'd gone over the maximum 300 charge cycles. Not a a happy bunny but it's one of them things, and forked out for a new one.
Now, i was wondering if there's such a thing as sleep cycles.
I.eis there a maximum number of times i can put my my macbook to sleep and wake up again?
I'm sure it's a large number and according to the customer service advisor at Apple, 300 for battery charges was a "large number" so i'm thinking, 'am i edging towards this unknown figure and then one day discover my macbook doesn't wake and be told "x number of sleep/wake up is a large number and you've gone over our max threshold and so do one"'
    Many thanks

The issue you experienced with your battery is due to normal wear on lithium ion/polymer batteries. It's not that Apple set an arbitrary number of cycles and said "We won't replace it after that". The primary measure of the life for a lithium ion/polymer battery is measured in cycles. The actual number of cycles can vary based on a number of factors (the newer machines with built in batteries are spec'd at 1000 cycles). After you reach that level, battery performance will slowly degrade... but it is possible to just experience flaky battery behavior at any point after the recommended cycle cap. You can prolong the life of your battery by limiting how often you run the machine using the battery. The more you can run the machine while plugged in, the longer the battery will last you. A battery cycle is a measurement for a full charge and discharge of a battery. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of times that you can charge/recharge them. You just used it up.

  • Battery cycles and percentage left is already at 95%!

I got my macbook air yesterday and it already says that the battery life if only at 95% left 4872mah left
    Why does it do that?

I think what he means is the "battery health" shown in istat pro.
I know I let my battery go for a bit today (maybe down to 65%), and after recharging, for some reason my battery cycle count increased from 1 to 4. My charge capacity is 4979 mAh now, I recall it being around 5060 mAh earlier.
This all could just be because it's a new laptop - I'll likely calibrate the battery to see what that does.

    Hi,
I think there is a problem with my MacBook battery. Every time I plug the charger in the light stays solid green and does not change to orange. When I remove the charger the MacBook dies.

I wonder if the "genuine Macbook battery replacement I bought" is genuine and if it is new?

It is an "original Apple Battery" A1185, sold as genuine and new.
    (Genuine Battery Apple A1185 A1181 MA561 MA566 13" White). I am currently charging it...
Capacity is stated to be 97% (4901 mAh vs the design capacity 5020 mAh). I am not complaining since it only cost 38 € vs. the 120 € from apple shop. Just wondering if it is really an original or a very very good imitation. It has all stickers and numbers and looks identical to my old one which decided to swell to double size...
