MacBook battery discharging but not charging

Hello,
I have a MacBook 2,1 that has been having some battery issues. My Mac runs fine off of the MagSafe adaptor and it also runs fine if there is a battery installed that has a charge on it. But my Mac won't charge my battery nor does it recognize my battery. As I type this, I'm running off of the battery alone but I have a battery icon with an X on the menu bar. I recently had my mother board replace at an Apple Store due to an audio jack issue. My AppleCare expired shortly after I had this repair done. If anyone knows what might be causing the problem, I'd greatly appreciate any help. And if anyone has had this issue fixed at an Apple Store, about how much can I expect the repair to cost?
Thanks.

My daughters iphone 3G is showing a red battery when plugged in but not charging, it always shows 20%.  Also the button isn't working, so I can't reboot.  I have plugged it into the PC and it doesn't recognise the device?? what is going on with this?

same problem here, on the Black MacBook, purchased in April 2008.
0% icon and the green lid.
I tried restarting, reseting etc ... without any success.

  • Battery detected but not charging

My PowerBook's AC adapter is plugged into a strip that is then plugged into the wall outlet in my room. About three weeks ago I went abroad and so I turned off the strip before I left, but inadvertently forgot to shut down the computer. Thus, the computer switched to battery power, but once the battery died, it didn't recharge.
When I came back, I turned the strip back on and booted the computer back up. The date and time had been reset to 9:00p on December 31st, 1969. The indicator light on the AC adapter was orange for a few minutes (to indicate charging), and then it switched to green as if the battery had been fully charged. However, the battery menu extra shows the battery life at 0%. I left the computer on for a few hours to see if it would charge, but no such luck - as soon as I unplugged the AC power, the computer immediately turned off.
I tried resetting the PMU, but it made no difference - again, the indicator light is orange for a few minutes and then turns to green, while the menu extra shows a 0% charge.
Is it possible that leaving the battery fully dead for 3 weeks has ruined its ability to recharge? Is there anything that I can do other than buy a new battery?
Thanks very much for any help.

I don't know if this is related or just an odd coincidence, but my AC adapter has ALSO died. It began sparking the other day, so I unplugged it, and now when I plug it back in, it makes a weird clicking sound and won't power the computer.
Given that I had NO way to power the computer at all - and that I have a project due on Tuesday - I had no choice but to go to the Apple store and buy a new battery AND a new AC adapter. Both are working fine and the battery is charging like it should be.
I just wanted to post this here in case anyone thinks there might actually be something wrong with the computer itself that caused both components to fry - if so, I'd like to determine that soon before it happens again.

  • Macbook Air (2012) says "Not Charging" when magsafe2 first plugged in but then starts charging after a few seconds. Is that normal?

    Hi guys,
I just purchased my first Apple notebook, the Macbook Air 13", last week and needless to say its a wonderful machine. However I've noticed that when I plug in the magsafe2 plug to charge the Air, the text next to battery icon says "Not Charging" for a few seconds (ranges from 1 to 3 seconds) before it disappears and the battery starts charging (the thunderbolt sign comes on). Seeing as this is my first Apple notebook I am unsure as to whether or not this behaviour is normal. I've searched the forums but have only been able to find one other case (w/o a solution).
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hey Guys,
Thanks for the info so far but now the time until it starts charging has increased to around 9 - 11 seconds, is this still normal?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.

  • Why does my computer say that its plugged in but not charging yet the battery is not reducing

it says plugged in, not charging, 99% (battery life)
but the battery life is not reducing & hasnt for 2 days. it just stays like that.

    windows 7 64 bit
i have had a few weird occurences and im not sure what caused it. abruptly my speakers would stop working & my battery life would start reducing. that happened i think 3 times over the course of several months. this last time which was the 3rd is when i changed electrical outlets thinking that maybe that was the problem. and the power & speakers immediately went back to normal. its only been a few days since i changed outlets & everything is working as it should be however as mentioned the battery icon on the taskbar says that its plugged in but not charging & it remains at 99% for the last 2 days.

    Hi,
First of all, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.
Now, plug in the AC Adapter without the battery inserted, start the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand the entry for Batteries, right click on and the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall - do not uninstall anything else here.  When the uninstall is complete, shut the notebook down, unplug the AC Adapter, re-insert the battery and then start the notebook on just the battery.  Windows will automatically reinstall the driver - leave Windows running for a few minutes. Shut down the notebook again.  Now plug in the AC Adapter ( with the battery still inserted ) and start the notebook to see if this has helped the charging issue at all.

  • Battery plugged in but not charging

Hi @all,i need help, my laptop when it is switched on it plugged in but not charging. If i switch the laptop off it is loading normally! For me it looks like a safety for the battery, that if you have conected with charger that it is not always charging? Can you please help me out here? The type is a HP Envy TS 15 NotebookWIndows 8 installedthanks and regards

Hi, I have an HP Envy 15 TS.  Same problem. As long as the laptop is turned off, the battery charges. As soon as I turn the laptop on, the battery stops charging. According to HP's website, when the adater is connected the led next to the connector should turn white if there's current flowing. If the battery is charging, the led should turn orange.  When the laptop if off and I connect the adapter, it's orange. When I turn the computer on, it turns white. In Windows, the battery icon says that it is connected, but not charging. The laptop is new, purchased about 3 months ago, and because of this issue it hasn't been used. I also get the "you can get a better experience with a better adapter" message. The adapter is the one provided with the laptop. I have talked to support on the phone. They disabled quick launch to get rid of the "better experience" message but they failed to identify root cause for the charging issue. Batter is ok according to tests. Adapter is also ok. Support said to take the laptop to a support center. Did that. They were baffled. Laptop came back the same after a little over a week, and the apologized for not being able to find the issue and didn't charge anything for the work. That is how baffled they were with the issue. The technician told me that after working with the Envy he noticed that another laptop, from a different vendor, had exactly the same issue. He also noticed that in the case of that laptop there were a few pending updates for the operating system. He said he applied those and things started to work as expected. He applied all the available updates for the HP laptop, including BIOS uprades and the problem persists. TIA, Marcelo

I just brought my Mac book pro 15" 2.3 ghz on 12 september 2012 not even one week I've used it the battery cannot be charged.
the upper corner right says it's plugged in but not charging.

I need this replaced or repaired ASAP. Is tat possible? It hasn't being used for even a week and it's already cause such a trouble? Is this what Mac is?

    Hi Steve,
I just got back from the apple service centre. I must say they treat us pretty bad and raising voices and stuffs.. If you wanna question or doubt on such service, I've recoded everything in my mobile and iPad. The company I brought from is TECHNOCRATS in 1Borneo Hypermall. The service centre headquarters is DIGITAL FORTRESS SDN. BHD. located in Damai Point.
    Here's what happened..
I went in the service centre and disappointingly, no one entertain us (my boyfriend and I).. we stood there for a few minutes. :(
Till we enquire for administration and problems. A girl said she doesn't know much. She gave me a number to her superior named Charles. She asked us to contact him. Then we asked "aren't you suppose to call your superior regarding to this matter?". "it's this the part of your profession to call Charles? Why is it my job to find him?"
Soon the lady calls him and she passed the phone to my partner.
Wow, there was raising voices and stuffs in the phone. So my partner asked him to come up to the office and discuss this matter since he was jst downstairs. For your information this is the second visit of the day, so we visited the second time after lunch hour which is 2:15pm
Well it was dramatic, Charles with his raising voices and terrible attitude for a greeting. So he straight forward blamed us for not putting the mbp down to the registration. (FYI no one there bothers to serve us for the 1st and 2nd visit). For my concern, this mbp is not cheap. And how can I just put down my laptop and leave? Without any rational reasons.
Long story short, I told him my problem and he said he will make a diagnosis and will return the answer to me tomorrow probably before noon.
Here's what I'm upset about. I enquire about the genius bar. He kinda felt offended and told me tat only apple store has genius bar! Im just asking you don't néed to be so loud on this.. I'm still very new to Mac products and stuffs.
Now that I have sent in my Mac book pro to diagnosis with the cables and everything. Hope to get the answers soon and hope it wasn't really bad since it was new.
Now its pretty much scarred on my side about Mac's Brand. I just wanted a reasonable solving problem and yet I get negative feedbacks from the service centre. Is this how it should end? I'm still pretty upset right now.
    Any suggestions for me? Please?
    Worried,
    Shirley

  • HT1119 BATTERY IS DISPLAYING (NOT CHARGING) -What to do if your Mac Book Pro 13" even if it is on the power source adapter. I have dim all the lights and other energy saver as instructed. Any advice please .

Hi- My Macbook pro 13" is not charging and displaying the ( not charging ) sign evenif it is in the power source & adapter. Have tried all the dim all display lights and close unsed applications ( except not too sure about the close running applications)
    Please help ?

Does the light come on in the power connector that connects to the Mac? If not then it is not getting any power. That light is either Green or Amber. Green for fully (and or Almost Fully) charged and Amber when the system is charging the battery. No light means the AC adapter is either not getting any power from the Wall Outlet or the AC adapter or the Mac is broken. In either of the last 2, broken AC adapter or broken Mac, you can replace the AC adapter yourself but if it's the Mac then only Apple can fix that.
Not much troubleshooting to do. You either don't have power to the AC adapter or the AC adapter is broken or the Mac is broken. It is one of those 3 things.

  • Battery status showing "not charging" when power adapter is plugged in

I just bought a brand new Magsafe adapter 60w for my macbook but it seems that when i plugged in to my macbook, the battery status showed "not charging".  I have to disconnect and plug in again.  This also happened when I used my previous power adapter, that is why I got a new one.  Is this a common problem?  Please advise what could be done.

  • Battery icon says (Not Charging)...help?

My battery icon says (not charging) and it won't charge. The battery is dead but the AC adaptor seems to work just fine. As soon as I unplug it results in the computer going off though. Any help?

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First, make sure that you have the most updated firmware and battery update for your macbook. You can also try resetting the SMC of your computer. Here are the steps:

  • HP laptop battery plugged in not charg.....

I bought a HP Mini 5101 from US in April .I had the common problem of charger being plugged in but not charging, I tried all the reboot and tapping the power button etc, etc... None worked, so as long as the computer worked when plugged in I carried on, until now. It has completely died on me now, so help...

    1) if the battery is charged for around 90%(depends on model to model it may be 80% also) its normal to avoid anty unwanted charge cycle. this will help improve battery life.
    2) if the machine is not charging because to used in too hot ambient temprature or its heating up for some reason. option is to let the machine cool down and it will start charging. this is again technology limitation and safety measure.
if above are not true:  Try this:
    Disconnect AC
    Shutdown
    Remove battery
    Connect AC
    Startup
    Open Device Manager
Click the plus (+) sign next to Batteries category, right-click All of the "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" listings, and select Uninstall In the "Confirm Device Uninstall" dialog box, click OK. (it’s ok if you only have 1 of these listings).
Click the plus (+) sign next to System Devices.
Right-click the “ACPI Fixed Features Button" and select Uninstall. In the "Confirm Device Uninstall" dialog box, click OK.
    Shutdown
    Disconnect AC
    Insert battery
    Connect AC
    Startup
hope it helps, Good Luck !

  • HP Pavilion dv7 plugged in but not charging.

I have aj HP Pavilion dv7 that's almost 2 and half years old. For some reason my battery won't charge even though I have the charger plugged in. Right now the battery is completely dead but before it died I tried everything to fix it. I tried updating the BIOS but this website said my laptop was up to date. I tried a hard reset, I tried turning it on with the charger in and battery out. Usually the light next to the charger port is illuminated but now it doesn't come on. I hovered over the battery icon and didn't even say it was plugged in. It just showed how much battery was left. Could the battery not be receiving charge or is it my charger that doesn't work?

    Huffer wrote:
Does the charger run the machine with the battery out? If so, the charger is good. 2.5 years is about normal battery life so the odds are strong you just need a replacement battery now.
Yes, the charger works with the battery out. My question is however: I just  bought a replacement battery, my problem is that my  battery is plugged in but not charging. I bought a non OEM Battery FY1. Is there help for this? Thanks
