Macbook becomes unresponsive

Just recently, my Macbook has started to experience a complete unresponsive start and will not become responsive after waiting for 15-20 minutes.
I have started and shutdown normally, then start again and will work for a few minutes but then witll quit.
Just leaving it after startup without toughing a thing and it will just quit.  No error messages.
Keyboard, mouse will not work..
Any ideas on what might be causing this?
Jim P.

I incorrectly described the symptoms.
I am able to start the computer, login and then after I login, that's where the computer will stop responding.  So it's not start up, per se, it's after I begin using the computer.
I've tried to pinpoint where the issue occurs, but not successful.
I have tried to start up in Recovery mode, but I think my machine might be too old.
I'm running disk check / verify and permissions check now.
Will post findings later....

My MacBook becomes unrespondsive while surfing. Crashes on both chrome and safari....

    Hi Bob ...
Since it's crashing on both browsers, you may need to repair the starup disk. Use Lion Recovery for that.
Before doing that, if you have anti virus software installed, disable that.
And turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy - Firewall

  • Macbook Pro Unresponsive

I updated my Yosemite on Friday, April 9th.  I'm now using IOS Yosemite 10.10.3.  Now, when I try to open any App by using the icons on the desktop, my Macbook become unresponsive.  The pinwheel spins until I have do a hard shutdown. I sometimes can open an App by right-clicking on an App and then click Open.  However, Messenger is the most problematic.  I cannot open this App at all.  When I try the entire system freezes.  Please help.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    Folks,
I have exacly same sympton described here on my 5 day old 15 inc macbook pro.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5296
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive
Has anone tried to apply this patch on 15 inc ?
    Kind Regards,
    Neroshige

The patch is only for MBP late 2013 13 inch. 15 inch is not able to install this patch
    I'm facing this problem intermittently.
When my keyboard & trackpad went unresponsive, I plug in my USB keyboard and the keyboard & trackpad went back normal.
I search the web and somebody highlight it may due to connector to keyboard/trackpad appear to be curled.
Not sure is hardware problem or software bug...

  • Why does my Macbook pro keyboard and trackpad randomly become unresponsive forcing restart in OSX Mavericks?

Randomly when using OSX Mavericks, since installing yesterday, my mid-2012 Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad freeze and become unresponsive.
The computer is still running whatever I was doing, the computer does not crash, i just cannot control it and the only way I have found as a fix is to restart.
This never happened in Mountain Lion.
    Can anyone help?

    Very similarly.
Mac Mini late 2012. i7 CPU, 16GB ram. 12GB unused.
After installing Mavericks, it seems to grind my system to a halt. It is still running (I can move the cursor and activity monitor updates processes) but every application I try to launch results in a colorful waiting sign. It even can take a minute or more before an application shows "any" sign of starting.
I tried to open a terminal session (so I could manually kill a process) but the terminal session did not even process. It timed out after 5 minutes.
Acitivity monitor shows 90-95% idle and I have no idea what's causing it.
I have already rebuild disk and reset permissions (all seemed fine) 3 times.
I've rebooted over 8 times since last night. I cannot use my Mac anymore reliably.
    Please help.

A: my MacBook Air becomes unresponsive when logging in, and I decided to reinstall OS X Lion. When running the installer from OS X Recovery, it gave the error message "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

I encountered the same exact problem when I attempted to re-installed OSX Lion on an old laptop. The date was set back in 2000, which rendered the certificate obsolete. Here's how I fixed it:
From the recovery menu, select the Terminal application. Run the 'date' command to confirm the date is wrong, then set the correct date using this command: date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}
e.g. date 1219195613
Exit terminal (type exit). Retry the installation.

I've been having issues with my laptop where all of a sudden it would black screen and become unresponsive. Have you figured out what was going on?
And, are you running any virtualization software, like Parallels?
Anyone out there know what's going on?  I'm pretty desperate here...

  • My macbook pro becomes unresponsive?

My macbook pro, running on maverick, suddenly becomes unresponsive. Anybody experiencing the same problem?

What have you tried to ameliorate the problem?

    Ciao.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 (and really since 3.4), aperture becomes unresponsive almost immediately after I open it.  It tears through over 1GB of memory within a minute, and I am forced to either force quit or open the terminal and "killall".

How do I fix this issue?  I haven't been able to use Aperture or load new photos into Aperture for weeks.  Since upgrading to Aperture 3, from Aperture 2; I've noticed that Aperture 3 is a major memory hog.  I had to upgrade my unibody macbook to keep up with Aperture, otherwise my whole system become unresponsive when trying to simply look at my photos.  I have about 15,000 pictures in my library, but the program is designed to organize large libraries.  Why has it been so buggy the past year?  Should I just jump ship and go to Lightroom?
    Thanks

    Matt,
it is normal, that after a crash a library repair is required. Aperture is a database, and if a crash happens, transactions may not be completed, so the library may be left in an inconsitent state. Usually the built-in repair methods can take care of this. But I assume, you have a backup of your Aperture library. If not, now would be the time to create one, just in case.
I doubt, Aperture is causing this crashes - it may be a coincidence; kernel panics quite often are due to an overfull hard disk, incompatible frameworks or kernel extensions, or to failing hardware. Run a hardware check, check the available disk space and file system with disk utility, and try to remember, if you installed anything else lately, that might have added incompatible kernel extensions. Turn off any helper apps, start up items.
Your kernel panic occurs when accessing the graphics card. Sometimes this can be resolved by booting into safe mode, this will disable advanced features and reset the card. Note: Aperture will not run in safe boot mode, see
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Browse MacBook forum and Mt. Lion forum, to see, if anybody else has problems with Mt. Lion and your particular Hardware configuration and card.
As a last measure reinstall your MacOS. You may also have a look at Thomas' Tech Corner » Understanding upgrade nightmares

  • My trackpad and keyboard randomly become unresponsive on MBP Retina

I just got my Macbook Pro with Retina a week ago. Its the newest model that just came out the week I got it. Its a 13 Inch. I noticed when I am using it, the trackpad and kayboard randomly become unresponsive for sometime. I have to close it and wait for it to start working again. Do you have any idea what the problem might be. Should I contact Apple?

I went through this with my old Late 2008 Macbook Uni when I installed Kingston Value RAM.
Take your new RAM out - install your old RAM back - do a PRAM reset and see if your keyboard and trackpad are working again.
Once that's done - turn your Macbook off - install the new RAM - if keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive again - install different brand of RAM.
I ended up intalling Crucial RAM in mine.
    Good luck.

  • Premier stutters, stop, starts, becomes unresponsive, and grinds to a halt

    ok, i3770 3.5
    24 gig ram 1333 ( 23.2 usable)
    win 7 64x ultimate
    Wacom touch pen interface
    2x Ati Radeon 6870 1gb gddr5 ( usually un-crossfired)
    premier pro 5.5.2
now, I more than meet the minimum needs for adobe premier, but sometimes, when I am using it, it grinds to a near halt and "becomes unresponsive" between simple actions. I checked online and it said to shut off the gpu setting, which I could not find on my version of adobe premier CS5.5. So, I figure my scratch disk drive is too full. so I free up 50 gig or so by uninstalling some games im not playing. I run my registry cleaner, and I still have the same problem.
Is it because I de-frag my HDD once a week ? did some of the files get shifted and this is causing major problems in performance ?
Im not sure if this is a hardware or a configuration problem.
What I am doing is creating my own cartoon in it. which I am sure , is not what this program is designed for, but I find it much more intuitive to use than flash for some reason. its a comfort / time issue for me.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Hello again, I can see that your Mac is running last year's 2011 generation Macbook Air, am I correct? If older, then I suppose that it is because likely of the new operating system, with new software added in, I think it is stressing the RAM a lot. Also, likely is because your using a lot of your hard drive's storage. Other than that, you can go and configure your mac or get a new one. These are suggestions I could offer, on the other hand I think you will have to stop updating your operating system. Not software updates, but operating system. Means you maybe sticking to Mountain Lion for "a while". Sorry I couldn't be much of a help. But yes, those are old specs and you may be stressing your computer hardware.
Another option is to get expensive accessories like an external hard drive and buying more RAM. Your graphics card should be fine since your using an Air likely just for work and internet browsing.

As has already been pointed out, you've got a lot of junk installed. The biggest problem is likely to be the Intego software, which is far too heavy-handed and is known to devour system resources and cause instability. You definitely need to remove it. Clinging to it simply because you pay for it is simply not logical if it is causing you problems. For less intrusive means of protecting yourself against malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.
You also need to clean out your login items list, which is extensive, and should uninstall any apps you're not using. (I see you have Turbo Tax 2011, for example... since it is now the 2013 tax season, you can probably uninstall the 2011 version at this point.) When uninstalling an app, be sure to use the uninstaller provided by the developer of that app. Do not simply drag it to the trash (unless it was purchased from the App Store), and do not use any general-purpose uninstallers like AppZapper or AppCleaner.
I'd also point out one other thing:
    Top Processes by CPU:
                 100%          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
    Top Processes by Memory:
              1.48 GB          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
Note the problems that ShareKitHelper is causing. This is a part of the system, but I don't really know what it's for or why it is misbehaving. Something is causing it to hammer your processor and devour RAM, though. This may be an indication of deeper problems with your system, or may clear up after you pare down your overloaded system a bit.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Quick Selection tool freezes Photoshop/ becomes unresponsive for minutes

After only two selections the tool becomes unresponsive for minutes.
I'm on a 2.6 Ghz retina MacBook Pro, 16 Gb RAM, and this in connection with an SSD should make this tool very good to use. Operating system: OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion", latest update.
Unfortunately, it seems to develop some kind of overload, during which you cannot use Photoshop at all. No commands like "undo selection", "quit", "close file" are accepted.
There is no beachball, no other signs that Photoshop is working on something.
Hint: it seems to happen when you option select (subtract from an existing selection).
Hint: the freeze can be shortened by a tool switch (has to be through clicking on a tool, keyboard commands are frozen as well)
Hint: the "subtract selection" move that caused the freeze appears after Photoshop comes back to life after a couple of minutes. The subtraction to the selection seems to be random, makes no sense, and is not the regular function of the tool.
First step after this freeze would be to undo the last selection, and continue working.
If you do several "add to selection" moves, they add up in a kind of waiting line. If you do the subtract from selection move, this doesn't work, and the freeze happens.
So far, I have not noticed the freeze when adding to a selection. Adding to a selection was always quick and instant. The bug must sit in the "subtract from selection" code.
On most freezes, the ants continue walking, I just had one (again with subtracting selection) where even the ants stopped walking.
I don't think it has anything to do with Photoshop working. I have used the quick selection tool regularly under CS5 on my old machine (which was a museum piece), and while I had to wait sometimes, it was never ground to a freeze/halt like the quick selection tool under CS6.

Did this work before, or has it always been this way?  Not a bug or everyone with your system would be complaining.  Have not seen that.
If it has always worked that way a reset of preferences will probably not do anything.
A reset of preferences will reset to factory defaults, so you will have to reset to saved workspace.
Do you have at least 10% free disk space?

  • Applications Becoming Unresponsive

The other day my Macbook was running slower than usual, so I restarted it and when it started back up, instead of a grey Apple logo, I saw a circle with a cross through it. So I had to boot from the install cd, repair my hard drive and then do an archive and install. It was working perfectly after that, but now when I use most applications they become unresponsive and I have to force-quit them. Any ideas?

To the moderators: If you find that this needs to be removed for a third time, can you please e-mail me personally and tell me why? It is absolutely not off-topic and I have tried very hard the second time (and harder this third time) to ensure there is nothing remotely speculative.
I have to take issue with a few things here...
Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
That's not a hard and fast rule. Yes, you need enough space, but the main reason for keeping space free is for virtual memory page-outs. The size of the drive has no relation to how much to leave free. Imagine two people with the same computer running the same applications, except one has a 200 GB drive and the other has a 1 TB drive. On the first machine, 15% is 30 GB while on the second it's 150 GB. There's absolutely no reason for the machine with the 1 TB drive to need more free space, much less 5 times more. The actual amount to leave free depends on how much RAM you have and how RAM-intensive your computer use is, and unfortunately there's no real equation for it.
Performed maintenance lately? Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)
This is extremely unlikely to help this particular problem, and should not actually be necessary at all. See [this page|http://www.macworld.com/article/133684/2008/06/maintenance_intro.html] for details.
I think that what is needed is something more drastic than an Archive & Install, which can leave some corrupt files to trouble you. Since you had such a serious problem initially and are having continued (though different) problems after the Archive & Install, I would recommend doing the following:
    1) Backup all your documents. (You can backup the whole user folder, but be wary about keeping too many of the settings files.)
    2) Reboot from your Mac OS X install disk
    3) Do an Erase & Install
    4) Install all your applications from scratch, set up accounts, preferences, etc from scratch.
    5) Put your documents back, and any settings files you really, really don't want to recreate from scratch. (Just beware, since you don't know whether some settings files are damaged.)

  • Sometimes my keyboard becomes unresponsive when using Photoshop CS6, & I have to restart

Since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I've found that every once in a while the keyboard becomes unresponsive.  I can't tell whether anything specific that I'm doing triggers it, but I'll be editing an image and will press a shortcut key and find it doesn't work. It doesn't happen when I first open up an image, but usually after I've been working for a while. As far as I can tell (it's pretty random) it seems to happen when I'm using a tool to apply an effect to an image, like this last time it happened when I'd been using the Spot Healing Brush repeatedly on a photograph. (Of course that could be correlation without causality, since I'm a big fan of the Spot Healing Brush and tend to use it quite a bit whenever I'm editing photos). Note that the modifier keys still function, but all of the letter and number keys are unresponsive.
Sometimes - and lately it seems like it happens always, there's a sound associated with the shut off.  It's possible that the times I didn't hear the sound I had my speakers off.  It's a brief clicking noise - and I don't think it's any of the built-in alert sounds on my Mac, since I just listened to all of them and I recall this sound being different - but the sound is definitely coming from my speakers and is not a mechanical sound from the machine.  I have no idea what might be causing this. I saw someone complaining of this a couple of years ago, who thought it might have to do with a Wacom tablet. I own one, but don't always use it, and this happens even when I'm not using it.  The only way I've found to get my keyboard responding again is to shut down Photoshop and restart.
I'm on a Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, with 8GB Ram; I'm on OS X 10.7.4 (not quite ready to upgrade to Mountain Lion).

Okay - it looks like I've solved my own problem after a few hours searching for related problems on the web.  It's not a problem with Photoshop but with Mac OS X.  The default "Universal Access" mouse and trackpad preferences were set to "Press the Option Key five times to turn Mouse Keys On or Off." So when I use a tool that I'm modifying with the option key, and I use it repeatedly five times in a row, I hear the clicking sound that means turn on "Mouse Keys" (and turn off the regular keys). Turn off that option, and the problem is solved!
