MacBook Blowing Hot Air onto Display

Hi - I just received my new Core 2 Duo 2GHz MacBook (Black). I transferred all the data from my old PowerBook to the MB using Firewire. I noticed that the machine was getting quite hot and the fan turned on. Then as I was installing Windows XP using Parallels, the fan was at full speed and I confirmed what I though was happening earlier during the data transfer - the vent from the fan is located below the hinge and blows hot air almost directly onto the bottom portion of the display (near the center where the "MacBook" logo is engraved). The first thing I thought of was this design is just nuts! Why would anyone blow hot air at the display by design?!? I'm a little concerned that this could result in longer term damage to the display. Anyone have any insight into this and the potential impact? Is it the same on the MacBook Pro as well? I just checked my old 12" Powerbook G4 and the vent is smaller so I guess lesser heat was being blown at the display.. also, I get the feeling that the C2D chip does run a lot hotter than the older chips (to be expected I suppose cos there are 2 cores after all with more processing power)...
Thanks,
nirmal

Make sure your vent is not blocked with pastic.

I upgraded to a MacBook Pro because of excessive fan activity, caused by the MacBook's weak graphic circuit. Just running a simple 3-D poker application would make the fan run wide open. No problem with my MBP. It's nice and quiet.

  • Macbook air with thunderbolt display - windows stuck on air's display

I have a Macbook Air and a Thunderbolt display. When I use the Air without the Display attached, the windows gather on the Air's display. When I return to the setup with the Display included, some of the windows remain on the Air's screen making it impossible to get to them without opening the Air and manually moving the windows around. The Air is tucked under the display, and opening it to move the windows back to the Thunderbolt Display is a PITA.
Despite the lid being closed (and never having been opened after waking from sleep/connecting the Thunderbolt Display) the Displays control panel still sees that display as active.
I cannot find a way of moving the windows back to the main screen unless I'm lucky enough to grab the right spot to move the windows to the larger display.
    1. How do I get the Mac to recognize the Air's lid is closed, and to disable the built in display?
    2. If that's not possible, how do I use Mission Control (where I can see the windows) to get the windows moved to the right screen?

I have no idea where that dirt came from. I really have no clue what it is, and it won't go away by blowing in it. I will contact local authorized store (there is no Apple stores in Croatia) but I highly doubt they'll be able to do anything without taking the laptop apart. Although I highly doubt it could it be rust from cleaning my MBP? I always put a couple drops of water on cloth I clean my macbook casing with. I have no idea if I am going to be able to do anything at all because the gap is really small, pin couldn't get to that dirt. I don't know what that could be, I never eat or drink close to my mac. Just my luck. What's Q Tip? Never heard of it since I live in Croatia

  • Can I load Lion from preloaded MacBook Air onto my MacBook?

Can I install Lion from preloaded new MacBook Air onto my MacBook after I install Snow Leopard?

That would be against the Software Licence Agreement. It may not work in as much as the Lion install on the MBA is machine specific. Pay the $29.

  • Does the MacBook Pro with the retina display need to be protected from smoke?

So my new college roommate loves to watch is high-definition movies on my MacBook Pro with retina display. The problem is that he likes to smoke indoors and he blows huge clouds of smoke on my computer while he's using it.  Since the newest MacBook Pro has air intakes along the bottom sides of the computer, what are the chances that there is something building up on the inside of my computer?  I wonder if the designers at Apple took into consideration that people may subject the computer to conditions such as this.
    Any thoughts?

You should - if you've been to a smokers house - you'll notice that some parts of their walls have yellowish stain from smoking - those same stains can accumulate inside your Macbook internals.
I've opened enough desktop computers from smoker's house and the fans aren't working because of all the soot from cigarette smoke and it's also sticky inside - if they can do that much damage in a desktop computer - imagine what it can do to the internals of your Macbook when prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke in tight quarters..
see picture below from tar build up due to cigarette smoke...

  • Can I wirelessly display the screen of my 15 inch retina Macbook Pro to a Thunderbolt display ?

Can I wirelessly display (like via bluetooth) the screen of my 15 inch, late 2013, Retina Macbook Pro, to a thunderbolt display ?

They can fix it, but not for free. Macbook repairs supposedly are classified into 3 tiers by an Apple Rep, I for least amount of damage and III for most. I have a dent in the corner of my MBP and it would require new housing to get it fixed. $450 (tier I) or ~half the cost of a Macbook Air on education discount... HA.
If it doesn't affect your everyday computing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's awful, but welcome to the club

  • Can anyone help me with tethering an ipad air onto an iphone 5c?

Can anyone tell me how to tether an ipad air onto an iphone 5c?

Sorry - to be a little more clear:
I can tether other machines (macbook pro and several tyes of windows machines) to the iphone 5c withoout any problem. Also the ipad (air) works just fine with my wife's independent wifi hotspot. The problem is that the ipad does not work (either bluetooth or wifi) with the iphone. Is this a deliberate policy on the part of Apple?

  • MacBook runs hot when battery is in

Maybe I haven't entered the right searches, but my problem seems unique as far as I can tell.
It's basically all in the title -- the MacBook gets very hot when (and usually only when) the battery is in. This started happening just yesterday and is now persistent. Several observations:
    1. Without the battery, the MacBook is around 56 degrees Celsius or so, don't really hear any fans.
    2. If I put in the battery (after putting the Mac to sleep), the MacBook very quickly goes slightly above 70 degrees and the fan gets very loud while awake, spitting out very hot air.
    3. It has nothing to do with charging -- this happens whether or not the power adapter is attached.
    4. It is not the battery itself that is hot -- when I remove it, it feels about room temperature.
    5. I don't notice any CPU usage spikes with the battery in.
The most undesirable side effect to me, frankly, is not so much the noise and heat as the decrease in battery life with the fans running continuously full blast. My battery still has 95% of its capacity yet is only good for about an hour and a half of usage on a full charge, with the screen brightness set to the lowest possible level and Energy Saver set to "Better Battery Life." Just a couple days ago I was getting almost an hour more of use per charge.
I haven't tried too many things to remedy the problem myself since I can't think of too many things to try, although I did reset the PMU (shut it off, removed battery and power adapter, held down power button for 5+ seconds). I also have all the firmware on OS X updates including the ones that came out a couple weeks ago (I just went to Software Update and it didn't find anything new, either).
So if I seem to have eliminated the battery itself, the charging mechanism, and the CPU as a cause, what then could it be? If someone thinks the battery could somehow be defective and short-circuiting something inside the MacBook I'd like to try swapping out the battery with a friend's (I'd do it anyway, but it's a bit of a drive). Otherwise, it's straight to the Genius Bar (even longer of a drive).
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave
    MacBook 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Still not sure why the MacBook would produce more
heat with the battery in, all other things seeming to
be equal, but I'll take it.
My reasoning is along this line. The "stuck" process is asking the computer to do something as fast as it can. The CPU produces heat in proportion to the frequency it's running at: when it's running at 2 GHz, it produces more heat than at 1 GHz. When the battery is removed, supposedly the CPU is throttled to 1 GHz. So even though the process is making the computer run as fast as it can, the computer can't exceed 1 GHz and therefore there's less heat with the battery out than with it in.

  • Macbook mini-dvi to vga display resolution issue

    Hi,
I'm connecting my 13in first generation macbook to an external LCD display.  It's an ACER AL2216W.  I'm running latest Snow Leopard.
I could always just click 'detect displays' and it would figure out what kind of monitor I had and I would be off and running at the native 1600x1050.
Now for some reason when I click detect displays, it only shows the laptop native resolutions.  There is no 1600x1050 in the resolution list and instead of saying "ACER AL2216W" at the top of the display preferences, it just says "Display"
I've tried rebooting, plugging in and and out my monitor cable to the macbook and a variety of other things but to no avail.  I'm forced to use 1024x768 right as it is the only resolution that displays correctly on my monitor.   Any ideas on how to get back the detect display working and have 1600x1050 resolution again?

I have a 40 lcd tv and have my macbook hookuped to it using the mini display port to vga and it looks really good, but i only use it for watching movies. Dedicated monitors are still better for reading text or playing games

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • I am trying to connect my HDTV to my MacBook Pro using a Mini Display Port to HDMI and the TV seems to not be receiving any signal. Is there something wrong with my TV or Adapter?

Whenever I connect the minidisplay port to the HDMI cable, my MacBook Pro screen turns blue for a moment and then nothing shows on my HDTV. I have tried to "detect displays" with each resolution listed, but none seem to work with my tv. Is there any way to fix this issue?

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

    18. What is the maximum resolution available for use with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter?
The resolution available with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is 1920 x 1200. VGA displays that use higher refresh rates (such as 85 Hz) at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or greater may not generate video properly until you lower the refresh rate.

    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.
I hope this information helps ....

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • How to turn a Macbook Pro into a second display for another Macbook Pro

If you need administrative access and it is denied to you, then there is no way, as ScreenRecycler and AirDisplay do need administrative access to be installed.
