Macbook Boot Error, Completely Stumped

Hey everyone,
So lately my macbook that I got in the summer of 08 has been acting pretty funky. It would act abnormally slow and crash freeze up when I had firefox open and tried to run other programs. I didn't think anything of it at the time until I tried rebooting yesterday and it didn't work. I recieved a picture of a circle with a line through it.
I then ran my OS X disc in the machine to bring it to disc utility to see what was going on, mind you I left my snow leopard disc at college. All my data and information seemed to be there, so I was trying to transfer everything over to an external device for storage. This never worked because I recieved an "input/output" error while restoring using Disc Utility.
Hours later I discovered the Hardware test option at startup, so I quickly ran that to realize a error message that stated "4MEM/4/4000000000" (give or take a few zeros) while researching this error, I realized that many other cases with similar errors had promblems with RAM and it was easily fixed by sreseating the RAM and flip flopping it around to different slots.
This morning when I tried to reseat and flip flop the RAM, I recieved the Circle and Line error again, and now it wont even bring up the Hardware Check at startup. I've run into a complete wall here, any suggestions or help would be musch appreciated.
Thanks

You have bad RAM or defective sockets. Either replace the RAM or take the computer in for repair to have the motherboard tested. Replacing RAM will not fix the problem if it's a problem with the motherboard or RAM sockets.

  • MacBook, low on memory, won't boot up completely

My old and proud macbook is maxed on memory space...which is why I assume it is not booting up completely. I turn it on and it goes into just the lovely outer space milky way image...and stays there.
Is there any way I can get it to launch all the way on....even if this memory availability is the issue?

You don't mention in your post what version of the Mac operating system you are using. That would be useful information.
Try booting the MacBook into Safe Mode by holding down the shift key on your keyboard during startup - this forces a file system check - and see if it boots completely. Let us know the result.
    Best of luck.

  • My MacBook air will not boot up completely

My Machook air has crashed. While using iPhoto to review photos taken with a 12 mp camera, the computer warned me in several languages to restart.  This has occurred on several occasions using iPhoto. Upon shutting the computer down and after restarting the computer, it failed  to boot up completely, shutting off halfway through the process.  I tried resetting the pram however the computer only provided me with  a choice of repairing the hard drive or reformatting the computer.
After several attempts to repair the HD/Disk. It gave a message to save what files I could and reformat the drive and reinstall the softwear.  However the computer will not let me do so  and gives me a message that the HD is locked.  Futher attempts to restart or reset ends in failure.  The computer will not boot up completely before it crashes/shutsdown.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Boot Error Sequence

IdeaCentre K210 57078894 works fine until I completely shut it down and restart it.  I get errors like Boot Error Sequence, PXE-E53 No boot filename received, PXE-M0F.  When I go to the BIOS setup it says Primary IDE not detected.  Can anyone help fix this problem?

    Hi,
You might try removing the hard drive and then put it in an external 3.5" USB enclosure and then test it on a different PC. This type of adapter could also be used to test the hard drive on another PC.

  • BCD/boot error 0xc0000001 ~ stuck on broken windows partition

Okay so I have a macbook pro 2009 and I recently partitioned my hard drive to get windows 7 premium using bootcamp. While installing new software for my windows side it it froze up and I had to do a hardshut down. After I restarted my computer it came up with a black screen that says boot/bcd error - 0xc0000001
info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
    It instructs me to
    1. insert your windows installation disk and restart my computer
    2. choose your language settings and then click "next"
    3.click "repair your computer"
problems I've come across while attempting to fix this
    1. when selecting what operating system to repair after starting up the windows installation disk there are no operating system that shows up.
    2. "repair your computer" option does not work and cannot repair the problem.
    3. cannot hold down option to go back to Mac side because of EFI lock which I don't know the password to it.
    4. cannot get to safeboot for reasons unknown, but holding down f8 doesn't work and holding down FN with F8 also does not work. It just goes to the boot error screen.
    5. System restore does't work either.
    6. went into command prompt and typed sfc / scannow but it says that another scan is in progress but needs to reboot to start. Every time I restart the same message pops up.
All I really want to do is get back to my mac side so I can delete the partition at this point. But it is IMPOSSIBLE so if anybody knows any solutions please do share. thanks!

    Hi electrovalent,
I agree with Tripredacus,we seem to miss the important part that we should boot from the UEFI mode for a GPT format disk.To boot from the UEFI mode:
1.Insert the installation DVD or USB flash drive, and boot the computer.
2.When the firmware starts to initialize, press the key that opens the UEFI firmware boot device menu, such as Esc, F2, F9, F12.
3.Select an EFI drive, examples: EFI DVD/CD Drive, EFI USB Drive, or EFI Network Drive. You may be immediately prompted to press a key to boot from the drive to continue.
Here is a link for reference :
Walkthrough: Boot Windows PE from a UEFI-based Hard Disk
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh265131(v=ws.10).aspx
I have noticed you have tried the "Startup Repair"option before but I would suggest you try this option again .Because we have chosen the UEFI mode this time and this option is usually useful and convenient to repair the boot loader.
If the issue persists ,try the following command line .I also noticed you have tried the similar command line before but I have made a little modifications according to the screenshots you have posted.
    diskpart
    list vol
sel vol 2  (Volume 2 is the fat32 volume, this step is not included in the screenshot )
    assign letter=v
    exit
ren BCD BCD.old (Backup bcd )
    bcdboot c:\Windows /s v:

Can all macbooks boot from usb(stick, hdd) and firewire(hdd) an os: linux, win, mac os x, opensolaris, etc?

    Yes,
Disconnect everything hooked up to the PC except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Then use this method to flash the BIOS.  It is the safest way to go.
USB Device BIOS Flashing in DOS
DOS Flash  (DOSFlash.exe, FlshUefi.cpu) is the DOS-compatible System BIOS flash utility that can be used from a DOS bootable storage device (where "DOS" refers to any of a number of compatible operating systems such as FreeDOS, MS-DOS or DR-DOS). FlshUefi.cpu is the required driver for DOSFlash.exe. To flash the System BIOS from a bootable USB storage device, you will need to copy the contents of the DOS Flash folder to the USB device, boot the PC from the USB device, and execute the DOSFlash application. To see a more complete description of the DOS flash utilities, view DOSFlash.txt located in the DOS Flash folder. This folder also contains the required binary image of the BIOS.  The binary image file is named xxx_MMmm.bin where "xxx" is the BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number.  This file can be copied to the root directory of any USB removable medium for use with the F10 setup "Flash System ROM" option
View Contents of DOS Flash Folder
The links on this post don't work. I copied the section from the BIOS flashing instructions for the specific section you need.

When I plug my iPhone or iPad directly into my lap top, using the USB cord, the devices don't even register with iTunes as being present. I am completely stumped. I believe this bagan with my last iTunes update. The last time I syced any device was Oct 23, 2013. During that time I bought two new apple products and the same problem, when I plug them in they do not even show up as being available to sync. Any ideas why this is happening?

  • Share FCPX with Blu-ray  USB3 LaCie writer boot error

    Hi
I've been around the bush and back looking at how to burn a blu-ray movie to a disc from FCPX and a slim Blu-ray LaCie drive.  I was able to burn a 5 minute movie from FCPX without any trouble but as soon as I try and burn something larger (like an 11gig movie) 1080 HD I get up in the morning to find an error referring to boot directory or something with a boot in it. Sorry can't be more secific than that.  It's costing me everytime it goes wrong.
I logged a job with LaCie and they said any disc is compaitble so i'm wondering whether there is an issue with Final Cut Pro X ?  Thank you for any assistance.
    Mike

OK, I have FCPX. I burned DVDs etc all fine. I then burn a Blu-ray.  Initially I tried to save to hard drive and burn from there but that didn't work.  Seeing FCPX can burn directly to optical device (LaCie) I tried that (share menu in FCP) I got a boot error message that I didn't take a note of.  Today I tried again after I checked a few things out.  I put in my BD-R disc into the device.  FCPX says it is "finishing create blu-ray disc: burning Blu-ray"
at 85% it then said Insert Disc, i did this and it is hanging.
I have been able to burn a 5 mintue Blu-ray sucessfully but as soon as I get to a 55 minute movie I have been unsuccessful.  Layers are automatic.  speed is automatic, it's a brand new mac running OS X 10.8.2    The guy I bought the discs from reccomends Roxio but why should I buy new software when FCPX says it burns.

  • Some boot error

I am getting some boot error at the very end at boot time and it moves to fast for me to catch it.
I did try with read -n1 added to rc.conf but as the error is at the very end so it just jumps past the error.
I had a look in /var/log files but could not really find anything.
Where to find the boot log? Or something else?

You should add read at the end of /etc/rc.local

  • MacBook boots up twice after installing Mac os x 10.5.3-is this a problem ?

After installing os x 10.5.3, my MacBook booted up twice, as well, thinking that something might be wrong with the hard disk, it showed that I had only 87 gb of ram, down from 90 gb two day's ago. Can anyone help?

    F.N.H.,
The additional restart is normal. This is a necessary part of the updates installer script. Most updates do not require the double-restart, but a few of the major one's do.
You do not have either 87 GBs or 90 GBs of "RAM." You may have that much hard disk space, but RAM is directly accessed memory that is used to temporarily store instructions for running applications and "live" data for same. You probably have 2 GBs of this. At any rate, it is probably normal to have lost 2 or 3 GBs of hard disk space over the last day or so, especially having run the update.

  • [Solved]Syslinux "booting... boot error" when booting Windows 7

Hello, I've set up my computer to dual boot windows and arch. Windows is on a separate hard drive and I was able to configure syslinux with a boot menu allowing me to select Windows at startup. For a long time this has worked without any problems whatsoever, but this morning I tried selecting windows and I got what is probably the most vague error message I have ever seen.
    "Booting...
    Boot Error"
According to this post this problem comes in when the ldsyslinux.sys file cannot be found. Unfortunately I was not able to use his suggested fix
    syslinux -U /dev/sdb1
I wasn't aware that there was a -U flag for syslinux and after checking it seems that there isn't one.

Sorry, I actually just fixed it on my own, it turns out my BIOS settings were a bit... weird. For some reason I didn't have my windows drive listed and it tried to boot a USB drive I had plugged into my computer. I just had to fix the drive order and it worked fine. Sorry about starting a fairly useless discussion.

    Hello nosaint1961,
It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your computer to your desktop. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • My macbook boots up and only stays on for 30sec and goes into sleep mode

My macbook boots up and only stays on for 30sec and goes into sleep mode! Any suggestions as to why this might be happening? Thanks....

I assume you have checked your sleep settings in System Preferences>Energy saver
I also assume this has just happened recently and spontaneously, not after installing any particular hardware or software or you would probably have mentioned it...if anything new has been added recently, obviously just remove it!
It could be the battery - have your tried it just on mains? If it's a pre unibody MacBook try it without the battery at all. This could happen if you have a non-Apple (cheap Chinese) replacement battery.
Try NVRAM, PRAM & SMC resets (Google if you don't know how)
Try booting from the install media and repairing or reinstalling OS X. (Back up first!)
Just out of interest if you boot from a DVD or go into Open Firmware or Boot Select modes, does it still sleep after 30 seconds or is it just in OS X?
