Macbook boot with logic board pins

So I have been given a macbook that has had liquid damage, a Macbook Unibody model number A1278 specificially. I took the entire computer apart and cleaned and dried all the parts, when i put it back together it still wouldn't power on. However, I have been playing around with shorting the pins on the logic board and got the fan to start spinning which I assume means that the logic board isn't fried. I was wondering if anyone new what exact pins you need to short for it to boot up?
Cheers, Toby.

The question has come up before in the forum.  Most people in this forum consider a water-damaged system to be a lost cause, unless Apple has replaced parts.  Even if systems can be made to work, water damage tends to resurface a few months later as unrecoverable shutdown.
ifixit.com has picture-guides for certain repairs, and maybe even the specifications you need.  Or Google for those who have put far more effort into those specs.

  • Problem with Logic Board in a Macbook Pro 15" 2011 in Argentina

Hi I am from Argentina and I am reporting a problem I've had a few weeks ago:
I was working with my computer (MacBook Pro 15 inch Late 2011) and it suddenly stopped working; the screen was frozen. I proceeded to restart it, but it couldn't enter the operative system, showing a gray screen.
Given this huge problem, I took my MacBook Pro to an authorized support centre in my country (Mac Station, 1184 Ayacucho , Buenos Aires - Argentina). The people there told me that the Logic Board was damaged. For this reason they set a budget of 2.440 dollars for the replacement part – plus the installation cost of 120 dollars. They were trying to charge me the equivalent to a new MacBook Pro model MGXC2LL/A purchased in the USA.
On the web it is documented that the 2011 MacBook Pro has recurrent failures on the Logic Board. How can it be that the total cost of repair in my country is five times the cost of repairing it in the United States? I think their official resellers in Argentina are taking advantage of us.
How I can get in touch with Apple support or someone who can give me a reason for that cost? Can I recieve official Apple answer in this comunity?
In advance: I haven't got Apple Care because Official Reseller from Argentina said me that Apple had discontinued in South America.

Thanks muchly will check it out now.

  • I know that there has been a big problem with logic boards on the MacBook Pro - shouldn't there be a recall? When I searched online about this problem was surprised to see so many MacBook Pro users with the same problem.

My computer was on one minute and off the next and will not restart. I took it to the apple store and
They said it is the logic board. I have been researching it and see that many MacBook Pro users have
Had the same issue. Doesn't seem fair to have to pay for something faulty on Apple's end. The computer
Is less than 3 years old. I expected it to work for a lot longer than this. Is there anything I can do that won't
Cost me? Also, how do I retrieve my files. I know they are on the hard drive but how do I get to them without
Having apple do it and probably charge me?

    Did you buy AppleCare?
I guess not or you wouldn't be complaining.
how do I retrieve my files. I know they are on the hard drive but how do I get to them without
Having apple do it and probably charge me?
Easy, open it up, remove the drive and use a SATA to USB adapter to another Mac (or Windows PC with MacDrive)
My computer is dead, is my personal data lost?
For iPhoto Library, that's really a folder (it looks like a package) it can be right clicked on by OS x and "show package contents" to get the Origianls out.
However I don't know right off hand how that would appear on a Windows PC, perhaps as a iPhoto Library folder, perhaps not.
But the files are on the drive, and Data Rescue (Windows) can always be used to grab them directly.
iTunes Library can be transfered to a PC, as long as the account name is the same, it should work fine and maintain your playlists hopefully, but the music is easily accessible.

  • MacBook Pro's logic board

    Hi,
Recently my MacBook Pro's 17" late 2007 A1229 graphics card died.
I bought a refurbished one on eBay.
The guy that solds the logic boards has tested it and it works (he got a whole refurbisched Mac parts company).
So with my old logic board, when I boot my Mac' screen shows white, the startup sound comes, and then it stops working.
With my new logic board (wich is tested and working!) when I insert the MagSafe power adaptor, a white light on the front side of the Mac (the button yoy need to push to open the screen) starts flashing, the ventilators starts rotating and the dvd-drive makes some noise.
So my Mac doesn't display anything on the screen with the new board, it just stays black!
I don't know how to fix this!
Everything is installed correct (getting my logic board out of the Mac and putting it back in it, i've done that three times!)
My Mac hardware works, because with my old logic board, it works!
The problem is, I can't test my Mac with my old board because I did a logic board exchange (it was 110$, a normal refurbished was 480$) so I can't install my old and test again..
    Does anyone have some suggestions?
All help is welcome, I really need it!
Please don't tell me that my computer is useless and my money is gone..
    Give me hope!
    thanks.

  • 2011 Macbook Air - Multiple logic board failures - possible causes?

I have a 2011 i7 macbook air - 7 months old.  About a month ago I went to use the computer after allowing it to sleep and it was totally dead.  Apple authorized repair center said the logic board failed and needed to be replaced.  Fast forward a month and I finally get the machine back.  It works fine for 6 hours, I put it to sleep, and soon as the screen went out, I hear a pop, fizzle, then the machine is dead again.  The authorized repair center wants to replace the logic board again, which should get me up and running, but its not likley that that is the root CAUSE of the problem here, since it happened twice now.  I suggested to them that perhaps the power adaptor, battery, or some other component is the issue and they don't think so.  I'm located overseas, and every repair attempt takes 1 month b/c of parts (total joke if you're listening apple!!).  My biggest concern is that they replace the logic board again, I'm out of commission for 2 months now, and it just fails again.  Does anyone have any suggestions on the possible causes of this problem?
As FYI - I'm using the same power outlet and power strip with another laptop and haven't had any similar issues.  Thanks for the help!

I have logic board problems too. I have had a late 2010 mac book air for 2 and half years. Its been a great machine in general - although it did go back within the warranty period for the track pad
Now it has logic board failure - symptons are the sound going and  the battery is dead and it is unable to charge which means every time you put the power lead on the computer thinks it is starting from scratche.
I have been quoted over £400 for the repair!  Like the above post I do not believe that this part should fail - and if it does then it is a major design problem and Apple should be doing something for us. I just dont know where to start.
I have used macs for 14 years and owned eight along the way. Most have them have lasted many years with full functionality  the record was my G3 imac which was still working after 13 years.
I really cant believe the situation I am in and rather think I have bought my last mac!

The port placement is completely different on a 2010 model and a 2011 model, so the user wouldn't be able to replace it at all.

  • Macbook pro 2010 logic board upgrade?

I have a MacBook Pro (2010) and I was wondering; is it possible to replace the logic board with a newer one? (from the 2011) Will things like the the thunderbolt port work? If it is possible, can someone direct me to some information about this?

This is possible but you will have to make alot of part changes. To fit in the 2011 logic board into the 2010 macbook pro, you will need to change the display to a 2011 model because the cables are more (webcam, wifi cables) and also you will need to change the topcase if you want all screws to be in place. The 2011 topcase has a screw hole positioned just under the mic while the 2010 topcase has the screw hole positioned closer to the dc jack. If you choose to fit the 2011 board into the 2010 topcase, you may find that the screw hole underneath the mic will be in contact with components undearneath the logicboard. A quick fix might be to use a file to reduce the height of the screw hole to avoid this contact (Do at your own risk). Furthermore, you will need to replace components like the speakers, wifi/bluetooth board, cable & middle frame.
I hope this helps? Let me know how you get on

  • Hello.  I have a MacBook Pro with Logic 9 which currently is at 32 bits.  How do I upgrade to 64 bits?

Question:  I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8 and Logic Pro 9, set at 32 bits.  I would like to upgrade to 64 bits.  How do I do that?
    Thank you very much.

Well, I'm beginning to have my doubts about that.  But is there a way I can check to see for sure?  This is a vintage 2007 MacBook.  I just had to replace the logic board & the HD, & now Logic Pro doesn't recognize any of my sound programs/libraries/plug-ins.  Any advice is appreciated.

  • Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina logic board failure

I have a mid-2012 MBP Retina, 256 flash, 16 gb RAM and after 14 months of casual use, the computer shut off one night and smelled like it was burning (it was in a well-ventilated place).  I took it in and the logic board had failed.  I paid the $310 to get it fixed and it's still having some issues with shut down.  After talking to two apple store representatives and discussing it on the phone with an another, their opinion is that these are prone to fail.  Has anyone else had similar issues and have they had luck with Apple getting these failure-prone components fixed?

The $310 repair if done by an Authorized service technician should have had its own warranty.  Furthermore, if you can claim anything under the Exchange Repair program, you may want to see about this:
    http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
In the future always buy AppleCare to protect against manufacturer defects up to three years from computer's purchase.
That failure prone opinion is in part because users may not know how to treat the cables*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
Given that is in the gray line between user neglect and manufacturer defect your mileage may vary on getting it repaired even under warranty.
If you can prove that you know what you are doing, and calmly explain the situation you are more likely to get it repaired when under warranty.
We are just end users here.  So we can't tell you what will or won't happen for sure, or guess Apple's policy.

  • Multi-Touch on MacBook Pro with Logic

Does anyone know how the new mult-touch pad works with Logic? I heard the enter buttons were removed. If this is true, I'm wondering if this makes navigation easier or difficult.

I went to the Apple store to check out the new MacBook Pro. They didn't have Logic loaded, so I was only able to test in GarageBand. I only tried a couple of functions, but from what I could tell, the multi-touch functions are not active in GarageBand. No one at the Apple store knew how the multi-touch functions works in Logic. At this point, I'm assuming it doesn't work. Also, it was good to know that the multi-touch functions can be disabled so the track pad works as normal.
