MacBook built-in speakers won't work

Anyone else have this glitch? The internal speakers worked fine at first, but would not respond at times when I plugged into, then unplugged earphones or line-out from the headphone jack. If I shut down and powered everything down with nothing plugged into the earphone jack, then started up fresh, the internal speakers would work, until I plugged and unplugged into the headphone jack, at which time the internal speakers would not respond again. Now even that has no effect. Presently, the internal speakers will not work at any time, except for the orchestra chord at startup-- no sound (including alerts), no graphic or effect when pressing volume up/down keys, no indication of on-board speakers in System Preferences>Sound, volume indicator in menu bar grayed-out, mute key flashes speaker symbol but not "on" or "off" when pressed, all that with nothing plugged in to headphone jack. But sound works perfectly through headphones or line-out. This must be a software glitch... I have installed the latest software and firmware updates, to no avail. I tried the suggestion from another post: log out, log in to another account, check sound, log out and back into administrator account. Didn't work. Tried the suggestion for a slightly different problem-- booted GarageBand, mucked around, quit... no effect. Somebody help, it's a shame to lose those pretty decent on-board speakers on my otherwise perfect Macbook!

i actually stuck a match up the jack while my macbookpro was on, and after a second (literally) of fiddling, the internal output worked fine again. so i suggest to anyone with these problems to just shove something up in the jack and fiddle for a second or two. no need to send the computer in.
same symptoms... red light (from the optical output jack), no system preference to change to internal speakers (even when you've got nothing plugged in).

  • IPhone 4 built in speakers won't work

All media on the phone won't play sounds through the built in speakers but when I plug in the earphones I can hear it. When I connect the phone to the pc and it sync to iTunes and disconnect the sound comes back but after a while it just goes again. The Os is up to date. Could some one help me out. Thanks

If you are still having the problem, take a look at the AirPlay icon to the right of where the volume slider is supposed to be. If it gives you the Play Through Dock Connector option, then you'll need to clean the dock connector. you can do this through several methods including using a business card or clean cotton swab dipped in electrical cleaner or alcohol, or pugging and unplugging the actual dock connector and juggling slightly (careful) and blowing or using canned air to try to clean out any debris.
The problem is tha that the iPhone thinks that it is still connected to the dock. A similar problem can happen witht he headphone socket.

  • Macbook Pro 17" - My built in speakers are not working.

    Macbook Pro 17"
My built in speakers are not working.
The speaker logo is not highlighted (grey not Black) and when in sound options  "output" pane only displays the digital out for 'optical' - ie, the internal speakers dont register (headphone socket works)
    Any ideas?

    1. If red light is visible in the headphone port, plug the headphone into and out of the port 5 or 6 times
to flip the microswitch inside the port. Hopefully that will make the mode revert back to analog from digital.
    2. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
         Choose the appropriate method.
Hope any one of these steps helps.

  • External Optical Speakers won't work on my G5

I have a Power Mac G5 running Tiger 10.4.11 and Logictech 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound Speakers. I had them setup with this system a few years ago and then upgraded to leopard and compatibility was fine. My HDD recently died and I lost my leopard disc so now I'm back to Tiger since that's what the backup discs are. Now that I got a new HDD and loaded the software the speakers won't work. The speakers themselves are fine. I can use the remote to test each speaker which sends pink noise to each one. That proves the connections are fine and the speakers aren't bad. I checked the connection to the optical port in the back of the tower and it is lit up red so that's good. I tested the speakers playing music and playing a DVD and neither worked so it's something to do with the computer not recognizing them. Headphones work just fine with it. In the Sound pane under Digital Out it says "The selected device has no output controls". According to the help tutorial it says I should see the speaker in the System Profiler, which I don't, but it doesn't go further into 'if you don't see them'. Anyone know other options I can try?

I have a macbook pro retina which doesn's have an optical drive. I have bought an optical drive. When I plug it in and put a disk in I can hear the disk spinning and the light comes on but nothing happens on my mac. It doesn't seem to recognise it. Any suggestions?
Just had that happen to me.
First, run Disk Utility and see if the SuperDrive (it is an Apple SuperDrive isn't it?) is listed. Is the disk you inserted shown? If not, hold down the option key and click the Apple menu - choose System Information and when that shows up, choose USB. See if it's listed there. If it is but neither the drive nor the disk you inserted appears on the Desktop, the side bar of the Finder window, or Disk Utility, return it for a refund (if it's within 14 days of purchase) or a replacement. That's what I had to do a few hours ago and the replacement works as it should.
BTW, if you want the disk you inserted back, and pressing the trackpad as you reboot doesn't eject the disk, as a last resort run Terminal and enter (copy and paste the following)
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
to try to force the disk to eject. It probably won't work (it didn't for me) but if it does, at least you get that disk back.

  • My built in speakers arn't working

Hello, Just looking for some advice.
I have just had a new hard drive fitted into my mac book as the previous one had died.
Normally i link my macbook to my HiFi via the aux setting on the hifi and usinga headphobne jack into the headphone socket on my macbook. I have done this since having the new hard drive but last night i unplugged it and the built in speakers weren't working.
The headphone socket now has a red light in it and when i go to the sound specification in the prefrences menu it says that the device has no built in speakers?
what have i done? Should i take it to a shop?
apologies it it is utterly obvious im just not a wizz.
    Thankyou!

    Hi there,
I've got quite a similar problem. Yesterday I rebooted my MB because two programs crashed. The first strange thing which happened was that the start up process took ages. Afterwards, like five minutes, the sound symbol in the status bar had disappeared and I couldnt find any sound output devices within the sound menu. I've read lots of posts to this topic and in most ones they talked about a red light within the headphone jack, which isnt true for me.
I've tried a hardware check as well as PRAM reset and all those things but nothing helped. Has anybody an idea what went wrong/ what I can do? Im going insane without music.
    Kind regards,
    philo

  • My MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working, what happened?

My MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working, what happened? If I plug in earbuds or external speakers, there is sound. In sound preferences, internal speakers are not a choice. Why doesn't my internal speakers work?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    2. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
    Best.

  • My laptop thinks there are headphones in at all times, such that the speakers won't work, how do I fix this?

My laptop thinks there are headphones in at all times, such that the speakers won't work, how do I fix this?

Thanks but that did not work. Details: when I don't have headphones plugged in, the volume won't go up or down and it also displays a circle with a line through it meaning it's not working. When I go to settings and look at my audio output, it only says headphones, even if no headphones are plugged in. I have tried inserting and removing headphones many times, also tried poking the inside of the headphone jack with a stripped Q-tip, and nothing works. Something inside the jack that senses headphones is not sensing the lack of headphones.

  • My speakers won't work on my new computer with a Soundblaster live! 24

When I was in college, I bought a Gateway computer that came with with Boston Acoustics speaker model BA735.
Recently, I bought a new Dell computer with the Soundblaster Li've! 24 bit and my speakers won't work. I have an old set at my house that works fine, so I know the card isn't broken, but I'd prefer to use my own speakers.
I don't know if I have to download drivers or change settings or what, but this is a pain. I have found some of the same problems posted, but they are usually involving a gateway computer, so I don't know if I can download gateway drivers for my Dell computer, I'm not very good when it comes to these things. Any help you can give me I'd appreciate.

    HI,
In most cases this is about the Internet Speed or the portion of it your computer gets that iChat can see at the moment it tests the speed during it's launch process.
That is to say that as you start up ichat it tests the speed it can see.
this can be effected by other computer doing a download and "taking" more of the Bandwidth or rather leaving a smaller amount for your Mac.
The same is true if your computer is already doing a download or using the Internet heavily.
Of course at that moment your ISP could also have cut the speed you get.
If you launch iChat and go to the Video Menu > Connection Doctor what does the Capabilities tab say ?
This may have red crosses against some items.
Also check iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit
This should not be set at 100kbps fro Video chats.
Have you tried restarting the computer ?

my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.

    plz help

    Ok...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation?

  • HT5278 i did this update and now the volume on my phone doesn't appear when i push the buttons on the side of the phone. occasionally i see them, but my speakers won't work for playing videos or music either. it does ring when i receive a call though! ne1

i did the ios5.1.1 update and now the volume on my phone doesn't appear when i push the buttons on the side of the phone. occasionally i see them, but my speakers won't work for playing videos or music either. it does ring when i receive a call though, and for my alarm. ne1 else had these problems?

I have had this happen to me on 3GS, 4 and 4s.   Usually the solution is one of the following:
1-  If  your volume indicator says  headphones even though they are not plugged in, then:
Stick your headphones into the headphone jack and then remove quickly.
    2. If that does not work Power your phone off. Then when restarting Reset the phone by pressing the home button and the power button at the same time until the apple logo appears.
    3. Make sure you have not chosen to send audio to an Airplay device such as Apple Tv.
Hope one of these works for you

  • My built in speakers are not working on my macbook

My 2009 13" macbook (late 2009) Intel Duo Core @2.26gb has no sound from built in speakers.  It does work through my headphones.  What can I do?

Resetting NVRAM as well as SMC could solve the problem.

  • Speakers won't work after headphones were plugged in

I plugged my headphones in briefly and now no sound will play out of the computer's speakers when the headphones are taken out. I plugged the headphones in a second time to see if the sound would work with those still and it did. I looked in System Preferences in the sound section and it won't let me change anything, in Output it just says Digital Out in the list of selections for which to output sound and won't let me click on anything.

Is there a red light emitting from the port? It sounds like digital out in activated. This could be caused by a hardware issue with the port, or something in the software. Here are a few things to try:
Try first: Repeatedly insert and remove the headphone jack until sound returns to the built-in speakers. Make sure you have something playing constantly, such as a song in iTunes.
If that doesn't work, try this: Make sure the headphones are detached. Attach a usb device (such an an iPod) to the USB port closest to the headphone/audio out jack. Insert the headphone jack, then remove the headphone jack.
If you are seeing a red light, digital out is definitely enabled. My guess would be that it's a hardware issue. Somewhere in that port, something is getting stuck, and telling the MacBook that a digital device is connected to that port.

  • My MacBook and my Monitor won't work together anymore

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
