Macbook c2d mid 2007 shuts off immediatly after AC unplugged

Hi there,
I have a macbook mid 2007 that shuts down immediately after it is unplugged from AC. I've tried the battery on another machine and it works fine as well as trying a known good battery in this machine. Also I've tried a known good AC adapter. Other things I have done are run the hardware test which shows no errors, reset the smc and Pram, repaired permissions etc. the battery appears normal in the menu bar and says it is fully charged. Also it Appears in system information as normal.coconut battery also appears normal with 275 cycles.I'm hoping the problem lies in the Battery Connector with Sleep Switch and not the logic board. Anyone had any experience with this problem?
One other strange thing is that after unplugging the AC the system shuts down immediately, but once you plug it back in it starts without the power button being pressed.
thanks so much for any advice.

Hi Cory,
Sounds like you've already done a lot of troubleshooting yourself. As you've confirmed via your troubleshooting it sounds like it's something under the hood.
In terms of order of troubleshooting, it's probably worth checking out the MagSafe board after the Battery Connector/Sleep Switch. Both of those parts will run you less than $70, a whole lot cheaper than a logic board.
I've been servicing MacBooks since the week they went public and I'd say 85% of the time it's the cable (for an issue like this) versus a logic board.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2014 shut off randomly and won't turn back on.

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro(Mid 2014) won't turn back on. I was just typing up my essay and it just turned straight off and won't turn back on. It has happen several times before and all I had to do was press the buttons(SMC method) and the PVRAM thing and it would turn back on. But now it doesn't turn on at all. How do I fix this issue? I had went today to the Apple Store and had a appointment at 3:15-3:25 and I was late by 2 minutes, so they couldn't help me and offered me to come back at 5PM, but will busy so I asked for 5 Monday. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Back when it was operating it would shut off whenever I was using it at the random times. This is my first MacBook so I don't know if it's suppose to get Hot and loud sometimes when operating and then cool off afterwards if that helps out. It shutoff last week wednesday and doesn't turn on at all, but will charge to fully green though. Anyone got any suggestions? I do have a MacBook screwdriver to open it, so if anyone knows anything about the inside and how to resolve the issue it would be great. I don't know how to remove the battery so if you do know please tell me or some keyboard trick would be helpful!   All my data is on this so I would like to solve before Apple erases my data.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.
    Any suggestions?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Kind regards

I did a clean install of mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and still it freezes at arbitary points. The very first time when it booted up it worked for longer and when I started to apply updates from app store, it froze. Successive boots froze much early, like within few seconds of booting.
I am going to check this by booting in safe mode.  I am losing hope with mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and will switch back to snow leopard (10.6.8) which was working seemless.
I checked so many things, based on other posts to make sure if my MBP is really Mid 2007. IT IS.
    Rgds,
    Raj.

  • My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off immediately after startup

My MacBook Pro shuts off immediately after I start it. It gets to the Apple logo on the grey screen and it shuts down. I have tried launching it in safe mode, resetting the NVRAM settings, nothing works.. Has anyone witnessed similar problems ? What can I do to fix this problem ? Help is gladly appreciated.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook shuts off abruptly after a few minutes of inactivity

My MacBook (White, first generation) shuts off abruptly even if I leave it idle for 5 minutes whether on battery or on AC. I already tried battery calibration. I changed power saver settings to "never sleep" in both battery and ac modes.
Moreover, when I close the lid, it doesn't sleep it just shuts off. I erased/installed the OS but the problem is still there. Any idea what's wrong and how I can fix it.

This could be a variety of issues. The machine might not be able to receive current from the battery or the AC because of power issues. The machine might also be experiencing a more serious logic board error. There isn't anything you are going to be able to do at home, unfortunately. I recommend scheduling a genius appointment and see what they think, but this machine is going to require a repair.

  • MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite

    Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

  • My MacBook Pro shuts off when it's unplugged

My MacBook Pro keeps on shutting off after about a minute or two being unplugged. It works fine while it is connected to the power source but I can't figure out what is going on. Recently it shut off and when I turned it back on, it lost my network preferences and asked me about allowing mDNSresponder and other permissions. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

You sound like you have a defective battery or a corrupt calibration file or a corrupt SMC data. Do the following:
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (Late 2008 and later)
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shutdown from the Apple () menu.
    2. Connect the power adapter to a working power source.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once.
    4. Wait 5 seconds and press the power button to start the computer.
Note: You must use the keys on the left side of the keyboard.
If this changes things you may also want to recalibrate the battery
    (major Deja Vu here)
Go to the Help menubar item in the Finder to learn how to calibrate the battery. It is a procedure that must be done a very specific way or it will not work at all. Print it out or write it down before proceeding.

  • Help! Macbook 2008. Unexpected shut off.

I have an older macbook (I think 2008) and cannot afford to get a new computer at the moment.
My macbook will shut off unexpectedly after only a few minutes of being off the charger.
I have bought a new battery.
Even if it is completely charged it will still do the same thing.
    I have mac osx 10.6.8.
I tried to dl some new firmware but I don't know if I got the wrong one because it said it was incompatible.
I'm hoping maybe someone can guide me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can my macbook pro mid 2007 3.1 AA896ll/a handle a SSD and how do I make the switch. Can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard from an original cd

Here is my problem, I want to upgrade my macbook pro mid 2007 3.1 AA896ll/a to an Solid State Drive, a Crucial m4 256 gb, I want to know if the macbook will be able to handle it and how do I do the switch. also once I install the drive will I be able to boot from my Snow Leoard original cd and do a clean install. Thank you

Coming from a 5,400 RPM drive that's nearly filled up, fragmented and deoptimized to a fresh install of OS X on a SSD will of course be a improvement.
However fresh installing OS X on a new 5,400 RPM will also see a improvement, boot up in 30 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new 7,200 RPM drive will also see a improvement, boot up in 25 seconds.
A fresh install of OS X on a new SSD will see the best improvement, boot up in 20 seconds on fast SATA connections.
OS X still requires time to setup and that takes about 20 seconds despite how fast your boot drive is, that's why sleep was created.
Things to consider: The higher cost of a SSD, the limiting capacity (hard drives hold way more up), the SATA I speed limitations (slows up on large file transfers), the difficulty to scrub the SSD of unwanted data (like you can a hard drive), and it's limited write capability. Also the smaller SSD's are faster than the larger ones.
SSD's are shock proof, which is their slight advantage over hard drives.
I see a 120GB SSD in a SATA I machine as being a waste, it's too small of a storage space (500GB+ is ideal), the SATA I connection is slow and other factors that make a 7,200 RPM drive a better option in that machine.
One can get a 750 GB 7,200 RPM hard drive for about the same price and still maximize their boot time in the process, also being able to scrub their drive of unwanted data easily.
SSD's can't be scrubbed, one has to fill 50% of the remaining space with many, very small files to overwrite the free space, then do another 50% again to defeat the Trim/wear leveling as SSD's write to less used location each time. If one fills a OS X boot drive up completely, it won't function or won't boot up.
If you do this fill routine regularly with software, then you prematurely wear out the SSD as it has limited writes. Why Disk Utility doesn't offer zero or 7x erase for SSD's.
If your in the 10% of Internet traffic that's going to adult sites, then the ability to scrub the caches and storage drive of embarrassing unwanted data is a necessity. Especially in the light of software and hardware that can read the SSD of deleted data.
Trick links and redirects on poisoned sites can firebomb your Mac with some pretty bad pictures and your hidden caches as well, especially if you don't like to pay.
IT personal have at their disposal free open source forensic software that basically aggregates all the past behavior done on the machine into a nice, easy to view format with times, dates and when and where content was downloaded from.
Since one has to give up their password for repair folks to recover data and fix the machine...
I think a SSD is less of a benefit over a 7,200 hard drive for that particular model of Mac for a mere few seconds faster boot time.

When my mac finally turns on the date/time is reset a windows pops up saying, "Your computer's clock is set to a date before January 1, 2008. This may cause some applications to behave erractically."

  • My canon sx120IS continues to show low batter and shuts off even after changing the batteries.

My canon sx120 is  continues to show low battery and shuts off even after changing the batteries.  Any suggestions? Do I need to send it for repair somewhere, and if so, where?

    Hi LB!
Thank you for posting on our forum!
Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the camera and the batteries using a soft microfiber cleaning cloth.  If the same warning still displays, then the camera will need to be serviced.  To start the repair process, you'll need to complete a Repair Request on our website.
If the camera is more than a year old, you may participate in the Canon Loyalty Program instead.  The Canon Loyalty Program option allows you to replace your current camera for a discounted fee, plus shipping.  The original non-functioning camera would then be returned to Canon USA for recycling using a prepaid shipping label that would be provided.
If you would like to take part in this option, please call our Sales Department at (800) OK CANON (800-652-2666) seven days a week, 8am to Midnight.  Let them know you have been working with online support and the Canon Loyalty Program was offered.  Be sure to have your serial number for your camera at the time of your call.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I believe that only works with the computer itself, not the accessories that come with it.
Just looked at the warranty information with an earlier version power adapter (one for PowerBooks) and it is one year.  That seems to still be the standard Apple warranty for Apple branded accessories.
Call Apple, go to an Apple store or go online and get it replaced.
