MacBook can't do much of anything without freezing

My computer is a MacBook 13in 10.5.8 and I've never had any problems with it. I keep it up to date with any of the updates needed and I recently put MacScan on there to make sure there wasn't any funny business going on. I've noticed lately that it seemed to be running kind of slow, especially the internet (I use both Safari and Firefox) but I assumed it was just my internet connection. Yesterday, I couldn't open Firefox at all without it crashing, but I re-downloaded it and it works now. However, now I can't open much of anything without my little rainbow wheel popping up and then it takes awhile to open even simple things like my documents. I checked for updates and there are none available, my fan is working because I can hear it running, and my battery is working fine. HELP!!

Yes, that information is very helpful. It eliminates HDD space or RAM possible being an issue, as far as total available.
See if there is an Un-installer for MacScan. If so, run it so all of MacScan is off your computer.
Then run Disk Utility, if there are any bad sectors reported, run repair permissions, run repair permissions again for good measure.
If your Apps start performing better, then you should pretty much be done.
Try Safari and if it still runs slow, empty your Safari Cache or better yet Reset Safari, both are under the Safari Menu.
Under... "About This Mac" just click on More Info in the window that comes up. There you will able to see everything regarding your Mac. You can also check to see if the Mac is seeing all of the RAM under the "Memory" tab.
As a side note: Always do this stuff with power connected, NEVER while running on battery alone.

  • Can't seem to click anything without using CTRL

There are some similar threads here but nothing exact. I have a MacBook. I was transferring files from a USB stick when OS froze completely and stopped responding to both the keyboard and trackpad. I had to use the power button. On restart, everything was back to normal except I couldn't click... On anything. The cursor moves around the screen fine but the clickpad is unresponsive completely. Also, the F-keys had reset, and the Fn + F-keys did nothing. (I fixed that with sysprefs)
After extensive trial & error, I managed to find out that I can click with the trackpad + CTRL. However, it goes to the right-click menus and such. I can select with one click on the trackpad. But if I move the cursor around, it drags the file/folder/icon. If i drag the cursor around the desktop it lassos everything. I have to double-click the menu bar empty space to stop this.
I can't actually double-click anything. I click once, and then again when the menu with "Open" pops up.
I have tried repairing disk permissions, checking system preferences, resetting system preferences and resetting the PRAM. I have also tried a new user, and it stays this way. Also, using an external mouse yields the same results. Unless I hold CTRL, it won't do anything.
It's kind of hard to explain what's exactly going on, but I hope I have. It's like suddenly everything is backwards, if that makes sense. It's like my clickpad is being held down constantly or something.
I'm assuming since it happens with an external mouse (regardless of whether I check "ignore trackpad") that it's a software issue.
Any suggestions on how to change it back to normal? Please?

Hi Veelle, and a warm welcome to the forums!
At this point I think you should get Applejack, and even though you've some of this, it does things in the right order...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
We can figure another course if needed from there.

  • Macbook can't connect to B110 printer by WiFi

    Hi,
Whenever I enable WPA or WPA2 security on the WiFi, my Macbook will not be able to print/scan to the B110 printer via wireless network, though I can access the printer with the IP address at my browser and scan from the web interface. The PC at my home has no problem. Also, my Macbook can print/scan to the printer without any issue if no security is enabled for the wireless network. What's the solution?
I have tried all the suggested solutions, including reseting the printer in the pref, uninstall the HP software, but to no avail.
    Config:
    Mac OS X 10.6.6
Updated to the latest printer driver from HP (version 3.2)
    Router: Level One WBR-6011
Thanks a lot for your help!

Is this a router that is supplied by your ISP?  Is it a DSL or FIOS service?
If so, let's reinstall the printer in this manner:
    - Unplug the Internet line that runs between the router and the wall
    - Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
    - Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the router.
    - Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
    - On that screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). If you do not know, use the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router IP (its on the self-test printout) in the Gateway and first DNS field, leave the second blank.
    - Click 'Apply'
    - Finally, plug in the Internet line, reboot the router and test.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

apple wont give me a new phone cause I broke the screen and I replaced it my self.
Correct. When you did that, you voided all warranty/support, & forfeited the right to an out of warranty replacement.
There was nothing wrong with the screen I bought,
And, exactly, how do you know that? Since Apple DOES NOT sell iPhone parts, there is no official source for genuine parts. Thus, many on the market are counterfeit & produce nothing but problems.
    Good luck.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How can I reinstall Safari 8.0 without disturbing anything else?

How can I reinstall Safari 8.0 without disturbing anything else?  I have OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite & Safari 8.0 (that comes in it) installed on a MacBook Pro laptop and a Mac Mini tabletop computer. I want to access internet banking which goes without problems on the laptop but does not work on the tabletop. The latter says "somebody tried to display the application in a frame..." whatever that means and obviously for safety reasons I can not start banking it always comes back to the screen with this warning. I tried Mozilla FireFox on the tabletop Mini and everything works fine including the banking. A Mac expert suggested something is wrong with the Safari settings and I should reinstall it. How do I do this without reinstalling the System? Would it suffice to wipe out the Safari Preferences and start anew? I am looking for somebody's advice more experienced than I am. Thanks!

    Hello isza41,
Before you try to do any uninstall/install stuff let me suggest you something:
Create a new user and check if the same happens within its account. You could do so by going trough the following steps:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
Click Add below the list of users.
Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user. - Standard user account would be perfect here.
Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Using a password hint is recommended to help the user remember his or her password.
    Click Create User.
Now Logout from your account (⌘⇧Q) and Login to the one you have just created. This account is fresh without any changed settings(as a new instance would look like).
Check if the same would happen and you would see if this is an issue with your installation or something more general.

  • Can no longer open anything without finder asking for password verification, but not accepting password

I plugged in an external DVD/CD burner but finder won't let me use it, and a message comes up saying "Finder wants to make changes, type your password to allow this' however, when I type my password it will no longer accept it and has an error code -128 message come up. I can also now not do anything on the desktop without the same finder password verification request happening. Have tried restarting the computer twice with no luck. Running system OSX10.8.2

This might be a rare case in which Repair Permissions in Disk Utility is worth a try.

If you mean that you aren't getting the reset link, then from the page that you posted from :
Note: The option to send an email to reset your security questions and answers will not be available if a rescue email address is not provided. You will need to contact iTunes Store support in order to do so.
You can contact iTunes Support in your country via this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

Having the exact same problem with connecting ML and Snow Leopard machines to a Windows 8.1 machine. Oddly enough, connecting and copying to/from works perfectly from a Mavericks machine, despite the problems reported about Mavericks regarding the exact opposite. An old thread, but did you find a solution?

Hey guys I got a used iBook from a family friend that has it password protected.I can't update or delete programs or download anything without the passwords and he doesn't remember them.Is there any way for me to get around these without wiping the computer and starting from scratch?

    Hello,
Sadly without the system disk you can't do a lot. I would suggest you enable root user, log in as root and reset your administrators password, however you can't without knowing the administrator password first.
The only solution would be is to obtain the correct system disk or buy a retail copy of Mac OS X. But note, it depends on what version of the iBook you own depends, on what version of Mac OS X you will require.
You can still obtain the system disk or retail disks from online vendors, but they come at a cost.
System disk are grey in color, while retail disk have a big 'X' on it.
    Best of luck

  • My iTunes is taking too much ram on my computer, what can I do reduce the size without having to delete items?

    Hi,
Since I have stared uploading movies onto my iTunes I have run out of space on my iBook. What can I do to fix this without having to delete movies? Is it possible to move my iTunes to somewhere else like a time capsule or external storage?

Yes. I moved iTunes to an external hard drive. Admittedly, I'm not tech-savvy, so I went to the Apple store and had them help me with it, but it's quite doable, and much smarter than putting an enormous music library on your computer.

Yes, he does have agile fingers and they are everywhere! I managed to find a solution to the problem by going to the Language section and resetting to black on white...
