Macbook can't find airport express?

just got the airport express today. plugged the ethernet cord from the modem to the airport. plugged it in. on the macbook running leopard, used airport utility and it can't seem to find the airport express? am i doin something wrong?

Did you connect to the new AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) wireless network, through the AirPort menu, before attempting to access it with the AirPort Utility? If yes, and the utility still couldn't find it, I suggest that you (temporarily) connect you computer directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the AX's Ethernet port, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility again.

  • Airport Utility can't find Airport Express after setting up as repeater station

I wanted to extend my 2Wire-based wireless network into a specific room that never seems to be able to pick up the signal, and found the following instructions on how to do so on Apple's website:
(note: these instructions were submitted by another user in response to a question as to whether or not an Airport Express could be used as a repeater station for non-Airport Extreme-based wireless networks - linked here http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MB321LL/A?pqid=QY4CAJJC7KFTTD KYH72DKPXF4CAUA9D4J).
Yes, you can do this two ways:  If you can connect your airport express to your router via ethernet, then you will perform the following steps in the airport utility:
    1.  Select your airport express.
    2.  Select manual set up.
    3.  Under Wireless, select Participate in a WDS network
    4.  Enter your network name, radio mode, channel, and security
    5.  Under WDS, select WDS main
    6.  Check wireless clients
    7.  Add the MAC address of the router
    8.  Click update
    That's it
Now, if you connect your airport express to your router wirelessly, all the steps are the same except for step 5.  In this step, select WDS remote instead.  Everything else is the same.
I followed those instructions exactly with my Airport Express and, after restarting, the amber light is flashing on and off continuously and the Airport Utility can't find the Airport Extreme base station. What the heck went wrong here?

    Update:
I restarted the laptop I used to set up the AX as well as pushing the "reset" button on the AX (first time - pressed it for 1 second, Second Time - pressed and held for 15 seconds then let go). The Utility still isn't recognizing the base station.
I also upgraded the Utility's software to 5.5.3 right before I went through these steps, and now it's not recognizing the base station. ARGH.
Update #2: I plugged the AX into my laptop with an ethernet cable and the utility STILL can't detect it. This is ridiculous.
Update #3: Not 30 seconds after update #2, it FOUND the **** AX >.< I'm updating the firmware, but I still can't get it to work as a repeater station if I have to plug it into my laptop all the time JUST to get the Utility to recognize that yes, Virginia, there IS an Airport Extreme.

  • I can't find airport express in wireless list

Can't find ariport express in the wirelist
    light showing is not green.
Need help on resolving these issues.

I suggest that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express. This will get the Express back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration. In this configuration, the Express will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
Once the Express has reset, connect your computer to its wireless network, and then, try to access it with the AirPort Utility. You can then configure it as required for your networking goals.

  • Macbook can't recognize Airport Express!

    Hi guys,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15" Early 2013 running Mavericks 10.9.1. My router is the Apple Airport Express A1088 and what is happening is: I did the setup of the Airport Express last year and everything was working fine. I had to download the Airport Utility 5.6 and then I configured the Airport Express. Alright. But today, my wifi connection was not showing in my Macbook Pro, but it was working fine in my iPhone 5. I tried to turn the Airport Express off, and the same for my Macbook Airport, but it doesn't work. So I decided to do a hard reset and also a reset to factory settings. What is happening is my Macbook Pro showed only one time after doing the reset and I did all the steps of the setup using the Airport Utility 5.6. But when the airport express restarted, it was working only with my iPhone 5, not with my Macbook. So I tried to reset again to factory settings and now I can't do the setup because the Airport Express doesn't show up in my Macbook as a new base station or anything else. With my iPhone 5 I can see the Airport Express as a new base station, however I am not able to setup it because it is a old version (A1088).
I don't know why my Macbook Pro is not showing up the Airport Express. I have already tried to make it work with Windows (via virtual machine) and using Airport Utility 5.6. I also know that THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE PROBLEM! Any other network I am able to join with my Macbook.
I also looked in this forum about other users that had the same problem, but almost all of them started working after a hard reset or reset to factory settings, which is not working for me.
I just wish my Macbook to recognize the Airport Express, until yesterday everything was working fine. And today it is only working with my iPhone, but I am not able to set up it with the iPhone.
    Help!
    Thanks!

    Hey Luis!
I am sorry - i only searched for Apple Airportutility and Mavericks to post the Link :-)
    Did you already tried
    - to delete your Wifi from the list of known Wifi's from your MacBook/System Prefs/Network/AirPort/Option/
    - or maybe delete and reinstall the AirPort Service from your MacBook/System Prefs/Network
    Cheers

  • MacBook Pro can't find AirPort Express base station

My friend gave me an AirPort Express and I've set it up as a base station before. But the other day it was having problems and I reset it. Since then I have not been able to set up a base station. When I try to set up a new base station through the AirPort Setup Assistant I get the message "The AirPort Setup Assistant was unable to find your base station." I have tried soft resets, hard resets, and even factory resets, but I can't get the base station set up. Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I face a similar problem - the default name of the Airport Express is shown, Internet-Access works, but no way to administrate the Station - it is "not found", although it displays the name of it before. Frustration!

  • MacBook Pro can't find Airport Express

Just unwrapped an Airport Express in order to simply stream music from my MBPro through the AP Express connected to my amp. But the lap-top refuses to find it, what straightforward step am I missing?

Pull down the AirPort menu bar item on your MBPro and look for a network with a name like "Apple Network xxxxxx", where the x's are the last part of the "AirPort ID" of the AirPort Express.  If you see that, select it, then use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Express.

  • MacBook can't see Airport Express when waking from sleep

    Hi,
I have an airport express unit specifically for using with air tunes. I am find that every time my macbook wakes from sleep although it reconnects to my wireless network ok it (and therefore itunes) can't see the AX anymore.
Rebooting the AX unit fixes the problem and i can again stream from itunes but i dont want to have to reboot the AX each time beacuse my MacBook goes in and out of sleep 5+ times a day as i move it around the house.
I am not having any issue with audio drop out or stuttering as mentioned by others, nor does the ax stop working once streaming has begun.
    My Setup is:
    MacBook OSX 10.4.11
    Airport Express (latest firmware)
BeBox wireless router (rebranded speedtouch) running WPA2 security
Any suggestions on what i can do to stop this recurring?

I've recently developed a similar problem. When my PowerBook G4 wakes from sleep it can no longer see the Airport Express. It still connects to the Internet, and the AX continues to shine a steady green light. I've written an Automator script that restarts the router, and once it reboots the AX shows up again in iTunes or the AirPort utility.
Customer service for my router claims this is an issue with the AX. Anyone have any ideas?
    Computer: PowerBook G4, 10.5.2
Wireless network: TrendNet TEW-432 G router, WPA, DHCP, SSID broadcast off, no MAC filter, Airport Express set up to join network (not extend).
    Thanks,
    tyler

  • MacBook can't detect AirPort Express

I have a MacBook 2.4 Ghz which is about 6 months old. I have a Netgear Super G wireless Modem router which I have been experiencing some problems with (does not always connect to MacBook or my older PC). So I bought an Airport Express which I have plugged into an older, more reliable Netgear wired modem router. I want to use the AirPort Express as a wireless transmitter for the wired router. However no matter how I seem to set it up, my mac can't connect to the AirPort Express and the light on it blinks Orange. I know that the router is Ok because I have plugged it straight into my Mac and it works fine.
I tried to do the same with my Wireless Modem/Router and the Airport Express light turned green and it appeared in the airport utility application. However when I turned the wireless transmitter on the router off I was unable to connect to the AirPort Express again.
I have tried to set it up in several different ways (as a bridge or as a new network etc...) and soft/hard/factory resets but nothing seems to work. So I took the AirPort Express back to the shop and exchanged it as faulty only to find that the replacement is exactly the same.
Am I missing something here? Should the AirPort Express connect to the Mac straight out of the box without connection to the internet? Or does it need an internet connection before it is visible in the AirPort Utility? Can it act as a wireless transmitter when connected to a wired modem router by ethernet? If so, how do I set that up?

I want to use the AirPort Express as a wireless transmitter for the wired router.
Mine is set up that way and works fine.
Should the AirPort Express connect to the Mac straight out of the box
Not for what you want to do....
1.) Plug the Express into a wall socket and connect an Ethernet cable from your MacBook to the Express.
2.) Open System Preferences -> Network and set a Ethernet Only connection (turn off all connections except Ethernet.
3.) At this point the Express will show up in the Airport Utility. (If it does not show up, use the reset button to return to factory defaults)
4.) Open Airport -> Wireless and set up a simple (Open, no security) wifi network.
5.) Apply and restart the Express
6.) Open Internet and set up DHCP addressing for the Express.
7.) Apply and restart the Express.
8.) On the same page - at the bottom - set the Connection Sharing to OFF (Bridge Mode).
9.) Apply and restart the Express.
10.) Unplug the Express from the wall, and turn off the wired router. Move the Ethernet cable from the MacBook to the wired router. Restart the router and then restart the Express.
11.) WAIT - go have a cup of coffee. Sometimes my Express takes two or three minutes to obtain an IP address and go from orange to green.
12.) Open the Macbook, go to System Preference -> Network. Create and Airport Only location (turn off Ethernet, Bluetooth, etc - all other connections)
13.) Connect to the wifi network created by the Express. Again, wait. The Macbook has to first connect to the Express and then the wired router has to recognize the request for an IP address and assign one. (Second cup of coffee maybe.)
14.) At this point, you can open Airport Utility and change the wifi network to a secure hidden network or any wireless configuration that you prefer.
PS Took me a long time and many attempts to figure this all out but my complex little home LAN works just fine now.

  • LapTop can't find Airport Express to play iTunes.

I’ve been using Airport Express 4.1.01 (installed Nov ’04)for the sole purpose of wirelessly playing iTunes thru stereo system which is in a different part of the house from my Dynalink Modem-Router. The Toshiba L/T I had been using was clogged and painfully slow to use so was cleaned up by using the recovery disk and it is now used by another family member but is not using AE.
I‘ve bought a new Toshiba L/T with XP Prof OS. Both L/Ts have wireless connection to the internet using a Dynalink Router/Modem (R/M)and share a printer – not via AE.
My system is similar to that on page 18 except L/Tops are connected wirelessly to R/M and the stero and AE in a different room from the R/M. I don’t expect to listen to stereo and browse net at same time.
When I attempted to install AE I got an error message “A later version of iTunes is already installed on this machine. Installation cannot continue”. Current iTunes is V7. However, when I clicked OK on the error message the AE Introduction Window with the 3 icons (Internet, Music and Printer) appeared and over the top of the AE window another error message. “An error occurred while trying to use the wireless internet system” and the Next button on the AE window was dimmed. Once I clicked OK on error window the Next button cleared and clicking it I chose the “Set up a new AE” option and next the “Create a new wireless net work network” option.
Despite the error messages both Airport Admin Utility and Airport Express Assistance are installed and scanning and rescanning give negative results. The Admin Utility opens the Base Station Chooser window with the left panel blank and the Base Station Information panel also blank. The Configure button disabled. I’ve done both sorts of resets and still nothing even though I’m doing this in the same room barely 2 metres from the AE and in the same position where everything had worker OK on my previous L/T.
I’ve even tried connecting my L/T to AE with an Ethernet cable and opened the AE Admin Utility. Still nothing and NO Tabs for either AirPort or Music Settings. Instead there are 3 Menu items – File, Base Station and Help as well as two buttons – Other and Rescan. I don’t have the information for the information asked by pressing Other.
When I attempted to update AE after downloading Airport V5.0.14 I was got the message “This update requires Airport V 5.0 to be installed. I can’t find V 5.0 to download if that is in fact the answer to my problems.
PLEASE! I desperately need help. Can’t remember this hassle when I set it up 2.5 yrs ago.
    Toshiba L/T Windows XP Pro
    Toshiba L/T   Windows XP Pro

This seems to be a common problem on several threads lately. Everything is configured correctly.
The airport status is green. But iTunes does not show the speaker choice button.
It was working fine, but at some recent point it stopped and I can't get it back.
I have the same issue with two different Airport Express units.

  • Only my iMac can't find Airport Express through Airport Utility

I can't get connected to Airport express with my iMac Intel-G5. No problems with my MacBook Pro or iPhone. Even the connection under Windows XP with my iMac is possible! So there shouldn't be a problem with the Airport Express device (connected to my cable modem) itself.
I had similar problems in the last 2 weeks, but mostly deactivating and reactivating the airport express did the job. Now even this doesn't help anymore.
    Any suggestions/help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
This may seem picky, but your iMac has either an Intel processor or a G5 processor. It can't have both.
Is your problem only with connection in AirPort Utility from your iMac, connection to the Internet, or both?
You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.

  • My Mac can't find airport express in AirPort Utility - I'm stuck!

I've been fiddling around with this thing for three hours and can't get it to work. I only want to use my airport express to wirelessly play music from my laptop to my speakers on my desk. I dot not want it affiliated with the internet in any way.
I plugged my speakers in to the white square apple thing, then plugged it into the wall. The next step is to open Airport Utility to set it up. My airport utility can not find any devices. It says "AirPort Utility was unable to find and Apple wireless devices. Please make sure the Apple wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
I've checked everything. I am currently about four feet away from the white AirPort plug-in thing, so distance is not it. I'm sure my airport can view all available networks, my AirPort is working fine for my internet (the internet is not affiliated with AirPort Express).
I think maybe this is defective? All help I can find starts off saying to open AirPort Utility, select the new device and, ....
I am running on Mac OS X Version 10.4.11, and I am sure my AirPort device is up to date.
    Help?

Yes, I told it to allow wireless networks. It's having a hard time joining my internet network - is that the one I'm supposed to be telling it to join?
I don't want to hook this up to my internet becuase the internet is the other room and I don't watn to mess with the internet settings my Windows roommate already has. I want the speakers to play in the bedroom, which is a good 30 feet away from the living room where the internet base is.
Should i create a new network and ask it to join in on that? but if i do that, will I still get internet?
As it stands right now my airport turns off when i unplug the ethernet, and nothing can be found - even though I told it to enable wireless.
This is so **** confusing. It does seem to work fine when the ethernet thing is in it though... but if I'm going to plug the ethernet chord to it, I'd rather get a long speaker chord and plug my speakers in to my laptop from across the room and save myself the $100 for this airport thign.

  • Can't find Airport Express via wireless or wired connection.

I've run across this topic in this forum and a lot of others and nothing I've found has helped resolve the issue. It seems like the one definitive answer I found was to return it to the store, but I'm hoping to avoid that so I figured I'd try once more.
Running Windows XP and using a linksys Wireless-G network card. When I first got the Airport Express I was able to connect to it but then I had some issues with my cable network connection and had to reset everything. Since then I haven't been able to connect to it, and currently I can't find it using the Base Station. Tried resetting it to factory defaults about 10x and I'm still stuck on blinking yellow. I tried connecting it directly with a network cable and even then my computer can't seem to find it.
I tried turning off my firewall, reinstalling the Airport Utility, connecting to the IP address 10.0.1.1 using the "Configure Other..." box and no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks much.

The issue is within the network configuration of the Airport Express. As you mentioned, all hardwired devices can use AirPlay but all wireless devices can't.
Normally, the Airport Express will wirelessly join your existing network, and Airplay will work with all devices. Any reason why you have your Airport Express connected to your router via ethernet?

  • Utility Airpot Version 5.3.2 (532.8) can't find Airport Express

    Hi,
I've been using my Airport Express base for a year whit no problems.
Since the the 4th of June, I can't connect to my net anymore. My utility airport can't see the Airport express base anymore.
I'm on MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo MAc OS X 10.5.3 running Utility airport version 5.3.2
What's the most bizzare aspect, is that my brother who has an old Ibook G4 but is running on the same OS X 10.5.3 and the same Utility airport versione 5.3.2 doesn't have any problem at all!!
I tried even to initialize my mac so to bring it back to the state when always was working fine, but still utility airport can't see any base!! Whereas my bro keeps surfing fast and furious...
I'm getting mad over that...please help me!

I actually have the same problem (but don't get excited - I haven't fixed it yet)!
Around the first week of June my airport express wasn't emitting the signal any more but my airport extreme base station was fine.
I tried changing my password from WEP to WPA/WPA2 which I guess is more up to date and more secure - thinking that since I'd upgraded to Leopard there were incompatibility issues some how.
I've done a hard reset to the airport express (I have not tried restoring factory settings yet - I might try that) and it showed up in the airport admin utility and I tried to reconfigure it and it timed out and said that it was not able to configure it (or something to that effect).
The next time I opened the airport admin utility, my airport express didn't show up.
It is maddening, and if anybody could help the both of us out, that would be great!!

  • ITunes can't find Airport Express remote speakers after PC standby

I use Airport Express 802.11n to drive my remote speakers over WiFi from iTunes. It works well, except for after my PC Laptop has been in standby (such as folding the screen). When it wakes up and regains network connectivity, iTunes can no longer find the Airport Express remote speakers. I can ping the Airport and it shows up in Airport Utility, so I have WiFi connection. It does not help to restart iTunes, I need to reboot Windows to allow iTunes to see the remote speakers again.
Does anyone have a tip of how I can get iTunes to "refresh" the Airport Express connection (zeroconf/Bonjour issue?) after standby wakeup?

    Holy moly. Now it works.
I restarted the Airport Express from the Airport Utility application, repaired persmissions and rebooted the computer as well.
Not much of a "fix" but sometimes you gotta do the most obvious I guess. (And yes I feel stupid)
    Cheers

  • Can't find Airport Express in local stores

    Hi:
I have an HP dv6500z laptop running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
I am interested in installing Airport Express but am having trouble
finding it at Best Buy, Microcenter, etc. Word is that Apple is
releasing a new version soon. Does anyone know about this ?
What version of Airport Express would this be. Thank you.
    DaleB

Temporary shortages of Airport Express product in certain locations have led to the development of this rumor off and on over the past year or more. In every case thus far, new shipments have eventually turned up.
If Apple is working on a new version of the Airport Express, we will likely never know about it until very shortly before it begins to ship.
