MacBook Charger Melted Cable

I've just seen my MackBook Black (2007/8) charger melt through its own cable. The cable has melted where the magsafe cable meets the adapter.
It hasn't been against anything hot, it has definitely melted through itself, for whatever reason.
What recourse do I have? Am I just left in a position where I'll have to fork out for a new charger?

Short circuit. Some component failing. Charger getting hot normally and being held against wire?

Probably, unless you have some sort of warranty or this is a subject to a recall. I checked online and didn't see anything about a recall.

  • Macbook pro 13" (60w) charger melted

I've had a 13" macbook pro for a couple of years and today the 60w charger melted.  Will Apple replace it or do I have spend $80 for a new one?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac is in warranty, take the Mac and the charger to an Apple Store or reseller and you will get a new charger for free.
If your Mac isn't in warranty, you will have to buy another charger > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC461LL/A/apple-60w-magsafe-power-adapter-for- macbook-and-13-inch-macbook-pro?fnode=5a

  • Melting connection port of Macbook Charger.

I purchased a macbook charger in Jan 2011, but now the connectign port has started melting down. Is it unusual??

If you can't charge it then you need to take it to Apple and get the socket fixed, once your battery goes flat that's the end of any use so there's no point trying to struggle on this way.

  • HT1476 After update to either iOS 7.0.3 or 7.0.4, my iPhone 4S won't charge. I'm using charger and cable that came with the phone. Nothing else changed.

I'm using charger and cable that came with the phone. Nothing else changed.
I think it was the update the iOS 7.0.4 that I did last night. I woke up this morning with my battery almost drained and the charging function going off and on every few seconds, like it would start charging then disconnect, then reconnect repeatedly.
I've tried restarting the phone and hard restarting the phone several times, but I'm getting really low on battery by now (under 20%).
I've tried cleaning the connector with a little isopropyl alcohol, and blowing it out with compressed air. Though I can't be 100% certain, it's very unlikely my connector died exactly at the same time I was updating my phone. Especially since it appears I'm not the only one with this problem.
And now, after the last hard reset, my phone doesn't even recognize the charger at all, or being connected with the USB cable to my MacBook Pro.
I turned off my phone so when I go to the Apple Store it will power up one last time, but besides that I'm out of ideas.

Just back from Genius Bar and two other people at my table had the same problem. Their 4Ss aren't charging either. One of them had a fried board according to the tech. At least my HW checked out OK. It just won't charge.
The tech tried to tell me that it was because my connector was corroded, which I told him was kind of a weak argument since evidence points to that the update has something to do with it.
They're seeing a lot of these and it looks like they already have a script.
Luckily I had enough juice left to recycle it for like $180, so I picked up a 5S with a new 2 year.
It looked to me like this is going to blow up pretty big. Like class action lawsuit big.
If you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, and you haven't updated it to iOS 7, don't for now. See if a patch comes out that doesn't brick your phone. Or get an induction charger maybe? Don't just update and expect absolutely no problems because too many people are having problems right now.

  • TS1538 My 4 month old iPhone 5s stopped charging, original cable with adapter works fine on other iphones

My 4 month old iPhone 5s stopped charging, original cable with adapter works fine on other iphones.
I have tried restarting iPhone while its connected to my macbook pro and when it restarts, I see it starts charging again.
After this, when I plug phone to wall outlet, it works perfectly and charges but next day again it stops charging.

Will Apple cover this under warranty if the port is damaged due to unknown reasons as its under 1 yr warranty?
Also, I am out of USA now and would like to know if I can send it through a friend and get it checked out by Apple tech...
Never has any iPhones of all generations that I owned gave such problem.

  • Charger/power cable replacement

Hi there, I need to replace the charger/power cable on my 2008 1,1 Macbook air- I wonder if anyone knows whether a 2011 AIr cable would work ? Many Thanks

Yes, it will work.  At some point in time, Apple changed the charging connector, and you may need to purchase an adapter form the Apple store.

  • Can my damaged macbook charger be damaging my battery?

hi there, a couple of weeks ago the magsafe connector of my brand new macbook charger (85 W) felt into a bowl with some melted ice cream in it. Essentially the charger is now damaged, it originally kept glowing even when disconnected but after cleaning it as best i could it began to only light up when plugged in as expected however it seems to have deteriorated from there:
i can always get it to charge eventually but only using one side of the magsafe (can't flip back and forth between sides) but sometimes it takes some wiggling to get the light to illuminate so it will charge
it seems to charge unusually fast, but maybe thats just because im paying attention now that i think theres an issue
the battery drains a lot quicker than it previously did (my laptop is only 1 1/2 years old battery has 494 cycles )
most recent issue is that twice within a few days of each other there has been an incident of the laptop just going black and requiring the power button to be held to get it to start up again citing the message ' Your computer shut down because of a problem' etc etc.
I am aware I should have replaced the charger immediately to be safe but I can't afford the £65 price tag at the moment as im a student and i thought because it initially seemed to charge as normal that it may be okay. Does it sound like this has done some permanent damage and if so what is the issue and (how) can it be fixed?
    Cheers.

You should be fine. Take it into your local apple store.
The only issue I could see is someone claiming that it was 'abuse or neglect', but that's up to the person you deal with.

  • Iphone 6 compatibility with belkin car charges and cables

    Hey
upon reading stories of certain car charges not working with the iphone 6 i want to find out if either of these 2 car charges and cables from belkin will charge my iphone 6.
In theory the 12v 2.4amp charger should charge my phone up faster than the rest however the iphone 6 is not listed in compatible devices, strangely neither is it listed on the 10w 2.1amp version of this product.
Am i missing some sort of trick here? the only thing i can think of is that the iphone 6 has a list of compatible devices or (certified) and will not allow connection with either of these belkin devices.
    here is the 12v 2.4 charger http://www.belkin.com/uk/F8J121-Belkin/p/P-F8J121/
    Here is the 10w 2.1amp charger http://www.belkin.com/uk/F8J078/p/P-F8J078/
What exactly is the problem with using either of these? isnt it the same lightening connection as the iphone 5?

Belkin probably just hasn't updated the page yet. Give them a call or contact their customer support. Note that the maximum current an iPhone will draw from a USB adapter is 1 amp (5 watts) whether the adapter can supply 1 amp, 2 amps, or 100 amps. So it won't charge any faster than a 1 amp adapter. An iPad can use up to 2.1 amps.

  • Macbook charger on Macbook Pro?

I forgot my charger for my MBP at home and want to know if I can use my buddies regular Macbook charger he's not using. TIA.

Yes, you can use the MB adapter to run your MBP. But it won't provide sufficient power to charge the battery while you are using your MBP.

  • Macbook charger-brand new, no light, not charging?

    Hello everyone,
Recently I was having problems with my MacBook charger not working. It was almost 4 years old, so I figured it was time to order a new one anyways. So I ordered a new one and received it today, and the charger is still not lighting up. The laptop is also not charging, however it does recognize it because it says "Not charging" where the battery would usually be indicated. Does anyone have any idea on what would be causing this? I'm thinking it might be the battery, but not 100% sure. Here is what my laptop is showing:
