MacBook Close and shut down

Hi,
When I Shut down my macbook and then close it immediately, it doesnt shut down. After I opend it in this procedure, I have to "force shut down" it by pushing long the powerbutton.
I bought my macbook in october. A friend has a macbook, too, which he bought in december. His Macbook does shutdown after he closed it.
According to the apple updater, i have the latest firmware installed.
I hope someone can help me (:
Chris

It may well be behaving properly.
All operating systems that I know of, Windows, Linux, OS X shut down in a similar fashion: The OS notifies each running program that a shutdown is about to occur. Each program is given a certain amount of time to "clean-up" and terminate itself. After waiting, the OS forcibly terminates any process still running.
If you look at the performance monitor you will see that even a brand new Apple computer is running several dozen programs in the background. Once you have added all your applications, particularly all those widget type things you may well double that number. IN many cases, they don't have much to do at shutdown time, and many just exit once given the notification. Others however have files that are open and much be closed, memory7 that needs to be freed, etc. These activities almost all involved calls back to the operating system of course, and so suddenly the OS has dozens of file /I/O and memory requests to deal with all at once.
So, shutdown, even more that startup, may well be the busiest your computer ever gets from the OS point of view. It takes time. The alternative, which would be for the OS to just stop dead when you press the on/off button, would result in many problems, greatest of which is corrupted files the next time you start up.
My advice: If you are really in a hurry, just close the thing and let it go into sleep mode. This involves some bookkeeping too, but at least you don't have to wait for it.
It's quite possible that your friend who's machine shuts down quickly isn't running as many things in the background as you are, or, there is one other possibility, which is that a single application, by not responding to the shutdown signal properly is holding the whole thing up. Try disabling some or all of those widgets and other background applications and you can probably figure out which one is the hold-up.

My macbook pro is stuck on grey screen with apple symbol in center with the progress circle under it continusly spinning. After I had turned it on. Prior to turning it on I had to force close and shut down a few hours prior. Please Help I have tried everything I know to do

Unfortunately this means that there is a problem in the boot sector of your hard drive. It might be indicative of a fundamental corruption in the coding that allows your computer to boot your operating system from your hard drive. I had this problem twice and it resulted in me having to get a new hard drive and restore my data.
In other words, your computer can't talk to your operating system so you can't access your data.
Here is my advice: DON'T CALL APPLE TECH SUPPORT though they are kind and usually helpful it will take you an hour just to explain the situation and they will only tell you to do what I'm gonna say here.
First: Shut down your computer completely
Two: boot up while holding down the following keys: command, option, p, and r. The computer will reboot 3 times. This solution will likely fail so if you're frustrated skip to the next step.
Three: Boot up while holding down the option key. Select recovery drive. Select your default language. Select disk utility, click on Macintosh HD, and select "verify and repair volume." Likely the verification will produce some line like "unused node not erased." Or something like that. If anything using the words "node structure" comes up, you need a new hard drive.
If after verification and repairs you still can't boot I sincerely hope you have apple care because you will need a new hard drive. Set up an appointment to come in to the apple store, they will tell you to go and get data recovery, just ask them to give you the old hard drive. Unless you have an up to date backup in which case you can just restore from that. If you're lucky the only issue is with the boot sector which means that if you ask them to give you the old hard drive, you can buy an enclosure and you have effectively been given a free external hard drive. It still works to store data just not to load an operating system.
If you have a back up drive bring it to the apple store and they'll do the whole thing right there, it should take around an hour and a half but may take longer.
Hope this helps, it's annoying but it's your safest bet.
    All the best.

  • Macbook slow and shuts down when battery indicator is not empty

    Hi everyone,
I have a 17'' macbook pro bought mid June 2007.
Three weeks ago I noticed that my macbook pro would shut down at 20% battery (if I was not plugged) and would not start back until I plugged it in. I figured it was a battery problem. However, my macbook started getting really slow with the little 'volleyball' icon appearing more and more often without having to use lots of different of programs in parallel.
Also last week I realized that now my macbook pro shuts down automatically at 67% battery! I checked the little button behind the battery and when this happens it shows to me 3 out 5 light indicator. So I'm guessing that the battery is not dead and yet my computer shuts down.
I resetted my SMC (I think that's what it's called) and repaired my disk... I have not reformatted it though.
Can someone help me out? Is the fact that my mac is slow related to its shutting down prematurely?
For info: my battery is 2y old and has 360 cycles.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
    Cheers
    aqualover

    Good on resetting SMC.
You should properly calibrate your battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284
If that doesn't fix the problem, contact AppleCare about a replacement. Battery warranties were extended to 2 years and maybe you still have a warranty:

    Hope this helps...

  • Notes doesn't sync from my iPhone to my MacBook Air, and shuts down.

When I open up "Notes" on my MacBook Air, it freezes and shuts down unexpectedly. I want to sync all my notes from my iPhone to my MacBook Air like all other features using IOS devices. I figured I'd check on here first before calling Apple Care. I had a problem similar to this with iMovie, and I had to go to >GO> computer>Macintosh HD>Library>preference> and select something from the imovie.plist type file. I dragged and dropped that plist file to my desktop and it reopened as a fresh app. I then moved that plist file on my desktop to trash and opened up iMovie, and it worked perfectly. Can anyone help me with the "notes" feature, and to help keep it from not freezing and shutting down; that way I can sync everything from my iPhone to my MacBook Air.
    Thank you so much.

Your signature says you have 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Is this correct? (If it isn't, please amend it to prevent confusion.)
The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 (Mountain Lion preferred).

  • New Macbook freezing and shutting down..

Just got macbook in late Feb. in the past few days I turn on the computer and after a few minutes the screen freezes, scrambles and the macbook shuts down. Then it begins beeping and the power light flashes and I can't turn on the macbook. I have to remove the battery to stop the beeping and so i can turn it on. When i replace the battery and turn it back on sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes up again...Anyone else have this problem or can give me an idea as to what is wrong????
I am currently living in Jamaica so if i want to see if I can fix the problem first before I buy a plane ticket to bring it to get fixed with an authorized repair person in the states.

Have you upgraded anything in your new MacBook? RAM? Hard drive? If so, try replacing the new parts with the old ones and see if that makes a difference. If not, it really sounds like your MB needs some help from Apple. You shouldn't need to buy a plane ticket, though. Simply call Apple tech support (you're still under warranty, after all) and ask for them for suggestions and/or to send you a box for you to send them the machine for repairs. I had very good luck doing that when I had problems with my old iBook.
    Good luck to you!

  • Macbook freezing and shutting down after Leopard install

so.. i have a black Core 2 Duo Macbook with 2gb ram, and i installed Leopard on it.
several times since the install, the screen has frozen - all animations stopped, everything unresponsive, etc. the first few times that was it - then it's been crashing within an hour or two every time i reboot - this time with the message telling me how to restart my computer by holding down the power button.
not sure what is causing it - i thought it was Spaces, but i disabled that and the crashes are still happening.
    anyone else experiencing this???

I have had a number of hangs on my new 24" iMac with Leopard, but none so far on my MacBook. I thought I had found an explanation last night after reading an artice on the Daring Fireball about Logitech mouse drivers ( I use an MX1000 Laser Mouse ) so disabled the Logitech Control Panel, but I have just had another hang. This time I was just logging into work in Win XP under Parallels but last night I was just browsing in Time Machine.
Hope I can find an answer soon as this is getting a little frustrating.

  • Type in artist name to lookup album in store.I get an error R6025 virtual Call and close and shuts down Itunes all together

What can I do to fix My online Store artist seach. I type in a name I get an error R6025 Virtual Call. Then it shut Itune completey down

I have had numerous issues with Itunes 64 bit 11.1.38 (and other previous versions) locking up and crashing upon start with "Itunes has stopped working" or "R6027 pure virtual function call".  I have researched the answers around the forums as well as having tried some extensive and repetitious troubleshooting myself and thought I'd list them here... in order of troubleshooting...
    1. Install all Windows updates and reboot.  This seems to clear issues from time-to-time... I suspect Itunes expects the latest-and-greatest as far as Windows is concerned.. see if this clears your issue.
    2. Uninstall all Itunes and Apple products & reboot, remove their directories, remove lingering Itunes registry entries, reboot again, reinstall using "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" to install the Itunes executable. See if this allows Itunes to stabilize.  Pelase be sure to use the following guide from Apple as far as removing the apps and directories are concerned...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
    3. Remove the contents of the "iphone photo cache"  (or other related product photo cache)  directory.
    4. Try editing the shortcut properties and configure the shortcut (for all users) to run as Administrator.
    5. Try editing the shortcut and configure it to run in Compatibility Mode for Windows 7 (for all users).
    6. a.Try using MSCONFIG to locate a potential conflicting application or service using the following...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2292
    or
    6. b. Remove the last recent software application(s) you may have installed... in my case removing GREENSHOT http://getgreenshot.org/  stopped my Itunes from crashing on startup and it stabilized after
    driving my nuts for weeks.

I close and reopen firefox numorous (Im talking 7 or 8 times or many more) and shut down the zynga game and still it wont load the tabs or if it does and I then try to add the game or any other site at all on a tab it causes firefox to stop working (though not close) and I have to restart opening and closing it many times to get it to work at all.

1st, you will not be able to activate your PPro1.5 on ANY new computer, see next link for the special version you MUST use
    CS2 (and earlier) Activation Server http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.htm l
2nd, you already mentioned Virtual XP, so if a direct install doesn't work, that would be the way to go... or, to just do what SHOULD work from the start, just do Virtual XP

  • Why is my 2010 macbook pro freezing and shutting down every time I start it?

Today, after using my macbook pro to upload pictures from my iphone, my computer started having problems and shutting down. The screen goes gray and a box pops up saying that a problem exists and that I need to restart my computer. I've only had the macbook since last November, so I don't understand why I've been having so many problems with it. This happened a few times to a lesser extent in Senegal when I was there for 5 months. I used a mac power adapter so I don't think it could be an over-charge problem.
    Please help!

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

  • On start up, my MacBook Pro will just go dark and shut down. It clicks but does not chime. What's happening?

My MacBook Pro on start-up with just go dark and shut down. It makes a clicking or popping sound but there is no chime or other typical Mac sound. I can push the power button again and it will generally power up. It is becoming more frequent with time.
i recently had it in the Apple Store for repair... some cola was spilled on the keyboard.  They replaced the keyboard and through a series of circumstances replaced the logic board, case, and superdrive.
About a week or two afterward it started the odd start-up failure. At first only once every few days. Now almost daily. It concerns me.  I relay on this old Mac for work and even thought I use TimeMachine, it would be quite a hassle to have to replace it.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

    Try these first:

MacBook Pro just shut down without notice. It had about 40% of the battery life. It will not turn back on and I noticed when plugged in the little light on the power cord is blinking orange, not a solid green like normal.  Anyone have this issue before?  I've only had this for about 3mos.  I called apple support. They tried one thing then said I have to take to the apple store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. So before I travel an hour+ away I thought is give it a shot on here. Thank.

    Hi S,
Did they have you try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?

  • Macbook Air 2011 CPU Maxes Out then Overheats and Shuts Down...

I've been having this problem for a while now but have learned to deal with it with SMC Fan Control to basically keep my fans maxed out at all times. This is obviously not ideal.
The problem is that at any given time some small, random task in activity monitor shows CPU usage that is very high, often at least 50% CPU and other times as high as 120% It has happened with the tasks like dock, safari web content and virtually any other task you can imagine.
For example, I just tried emptying my recycling bin and it hung half way through then my computer shut down. What is going on here?
    Details:
    - Macbook Air mid-2011 running Mavericks
    - Never have more than one app open at any given time, usually just Safari with about 5 tabs, max
    - 3rd party applications running in background include Dropbox, Copy, Backblaze, Flux, Sophos anti virus, Jumpcut, Caffeine and that's it
If I'm doing something like a Time Machine backup, I have to disable Wifi, max out the fans and only then will the Macbook Air remain cool enough to complete the backup, otherwise the Time Machine process maxes out the CPU, overheats and shuts down. This happens with virtually everything now.
How can I start trouble shooting this problem? I've run the hardware and system repair checks with no results, done an SMC reset, etc.
This really seems like a software issue more than anything, like something related to the way tasks/processes are handled...any ideas anyone? This is such an annoying problem!

Do the problems also occur in "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
