Macbook connection to cimena display

I have this display http://support.apple.com/kb/SP110, and a 13 inch macbook.  I have all of the appropriate adaptors to connect the two, but I'm still noat able to make it work.  When I power up the monitor, the light behind the button glows, then fades, then disapears.  (it takes about a second for all of this to happen)  Do you think my problem is with the power supply to the monitor, the monitor itself, or is there a third problem I'm not thinking of.... something with the laptop maybe.  I feel a little foolish for how much money I've put into this work around, when I could have probably picked up a referbished macbook.
Thanks

I just ran into the same exact problem a few days ago after a round of updates (SMC firmware update 1.6, Safari, Remote Desktop Client update and an iTunes update) and reboot on my 13-inch (early 2011) MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). My display is an old 22" (M8149) cinema display that still works exceptionally well when using an Apple DVI to ADC adapter. When adding a typical Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter to that, everything consistently works perfectly fine with my old black MacBook, ruling out the possibility of it being a display/ADC hardware problem. However, when I swap the mini-DVI to DVI adapter with a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter and connect it to the MacBook Pro, the computer recognizes the added display and everything works as it should (including the blue  screen), but the display is black and the power light is not on. The current Thunderbolt firmware  is v1.0. There was an firmware update released (v1.1) for "an issue with MacBook Pro (mid 2012) and some Thunderbolt cables that may prevent bus-powered Thunderbolt devices from functioning properly." This update never appeared on my updates list, but I had to wonder if might resolve the issue. I just happen to have a mid-2012 as well. Thunderbolt firmware v1.0 gave me the same exact results as I got with the early 2011 so I updated the firmware to v1.1 and crossed my fingers. After rebooting and a bit of plugging/unplugging, etc., nothing changed. The display is still being recognized by the computer, but the screen is still black.
My setup worked fine until the most recent updates were applied, so I know the combination is possible. I suppose it could be a coincidence, but after everything I've tried, the odds seem pretty slim. I'm not really sure what to do at this point, and I'm sure there are several others out there with the same problem, so I hope this draws some attention to the matter.

Alternatively how do I connect an audio input at a level that would normally have gone into a 'line input' socket ?

Plug it into the linein/headphone jack if there's just one.  It'll switch between the two modes automatically depending on what you plug into it.

  • HT3382 Connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor?

    Hello everyone,
Is it possible to connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor with resolutions higher than 1920 x 1200? It seems Apple does not supply a mini-DP to DP adapter.
However, just as they do not make a mini-DP to HDMI adapter, but they do recommend a Belkin product for this purpose.
Is there any reason that a mini-DP to DP adapter or cable wouldn't work and support high resolutions?
    Thanks for your feedback!

    Hey tjk,
    Thanks for the response.
Do you have any recommendations for a potential set up? The audio output and Apple DVI are on different sides of my MBP, which is alright, I guess I can get two long cables to handle each. I was hoping to just have my MBP closer to where I use it, with a cord nearby plugged in on one side to the HDTV and resting near where I keep my MBP for when I want to use the HDTV as an external monitor.
With a converter like this, you can run video out of the MBP's DVI port, and miniToslink (optical) audio out of the 3.5mm stereo mini jack to the converter, then it will combine the two and output audio and video through HDMI to the monitor.

Otherwise, depending on the TV's inputs, for video you could run DVI to DVI on the TV, or DVI to HDMI to the TV. For audio you could run 3.5mm stereo mini plug from the MBP to RCA adapter on the TV. Toslink/optical is also an option.

  • How to connect Macbook to 23" Cinema Display

I just bought a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter to connect my Macbook to my Cinema Display 23", but I am realizing this adapter is probably not what I need as the Cinema HD Display has a different, larger connector that doesn't match the other end of my adaptor. I was wondering if someone could help me understand which cables to buy.
    Thank you!

Your 23" Cinema has a DVI-connector, so the adapter you're looking for is a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
The cable form your Cinema should look like this: http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/graphics/infolib/homelib/dvi_connector600.jpg

  • Connecting new MacBook to old Cinema Display

I have an old Cinema Display that I want to use with my new MacBook. I just bought the DVI to ADC adapter. I can connect the Cinema Display to the adapter but the manual illustrates that to connect to the MacBook I need to use both the USB port and another port for which there is no equivalent port on my new laptop. Any ideas?

It sounds like you are looking for an Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter available from the Apple Store (including the online Apple Store). You will also need a standard DVI-D cable to go between the adapter and the DVI to ADC adapter.

    Hi All,

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! (I finally found the fix while searching in other threads...still very annoying that I had to do this with a $2,500 computer...Apple should provide a fix for this ASAP)
My Apple tech support guy came back a day earlier than expected, said to remove a couple of plist files, and it now works perfectly with HDMI, my projector, my external monitor, etc.
I had already removed one of the plist files a few days ago (which in itself hadn't worked), but when I removed the other, it did. I would suggest removing both.
    Go to Finder.
In the root directory (MacBookPro or whatever your HD is called), go to Library, go to Preferences, find com.apple.windowserver.plist and put it into Trash
In your own user directory, go to Library (in Finder, click Go menu and hold Option key down to get to Library), go to Preferences, go to ByHost directory, find com.apple.windowserver.OE35739etc,etcxxxxxxxxxxx.plist, and put it into Trash.
You do not have to empty Trash.
    Reboot computer.
The HDMI should be working now, and permanently so.

  • Problem waking MacBook Pro when connected to external display

I have the new 13" MacBook Pro and like to use it connected to an external VGA display (Xerox) with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode. The problem I am having is that after working for a a few hours, when I put the Mac to sleep with mains power connected, usb keyboard connected and the external display connected (via mini display to VGA adapter), the Mac will sometimes refuse to wake. I have a wireless Mighty Mouse also and the Mac is set to wake with Bluetooth devices. When I click a key on the keyboard or click the mouse a few times the pulsing sleep light at the front of the Mac goes solid but nothing appears on the external display. If I open the MacBook Pro the solid light goes out but the Mac does not respond. If I close the MacBook Pro display, the solid light comes on again. I have no option but to force a restart. This is an intermittent problem. I have yet to have this happen when no external display is connected.

I have the exact same problem.
    Here's my story:
To give you some backgroud, my setup involves having the macbook on a mstand hooked up to an external monitor. I run a usb hub from my macbook, this is where my mouse transceiver is plugged in. I use am Apple wireless bluetooth keyboard (latest slim model)
I recently purchased the 13.3' inch 2.26 MBP as I gave my older 2.0 uMB to a family member. The computer is in the stock configuration with no hardware upgrades.
I have noticed weird behaviour when waking the computer from sleep when the lid is closed. When i wake the computer up (by tuning on bt keyboard), the keyboard light blinks like there is not bt connection and the computer will wake in an inactive state. The led light will be on, but when i flip the screen up....nothing. Screen is dark, keyboard pressing does not illicit any responses. I have to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button to restart the computer. Unfortunately any previous data or work is lost.
I work in IT so I completed troubleshooting and also things outlined on forums in google. Reset PRAM, reset SMC and also reinstalled OSX. Still I get the same result. Fearing I purchased a defective unit, I called Apple and they told me i could exchange the computer so I dropped by the apple store and exchanged it quite easily.
I've spent hours restoring from time machine and I am experiencing the same issue on my new laptop. I'm now assuming its not hardware but more firmware related as I had to do a bluetooth firmaware upgrade when I bought the computer when I checked for software updates.
Is anyone else having any wake issues with their new MBPs? And what should I do next? Should I exchange for a 3rd unit? Thanks for you help everyone.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Can I connect both PC and MacBook Pro to Thunderbolt display?

    Hello,
I've new MacBook Pro 15" 2011 model (with Thunderbolt port) along with a PC (with DVI output.) I would like to get new Thunderbolt display. Can I connect both PC and Mac at the same time to Thunderbolt display? i.e., I don't want to disconnect wires at all the time and I also I'm going to use Thunderbolt cable when connecting Mac to display.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Your MBPro (w/TB) should have no problems connecting to the newer TB display!!!
You can NOT connect the PC to the TB display.   The Apple website mentions that the display can connect to any "Thunderbolt Enabled" Mac.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button.  Worked fine before Lion update.   Any Advice?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out.  Thanks very much for responding!!!

  • MacBook pro 15" Retina - connecting to Thunderbolt display issue

    Hi
Is everyone else have trouble connecting the thunderbolt to the MacBook Pro with Retina? With my air it was plug and play (nomatter if the MBA were asleep or awake - it would just wake up when I uesed the wirless mouse or keyboard), but now I have to restart my Mac everytime I connect it to the thunderbolt display.
It simply will not "wake" when I connect the thunderbolt cable. I have to open the screen and the restart..
Also there is a lot of "flickering" . almost like it is "trying" to work.. but have to be reastartet everytime.

Mine is even worse...after connecting it the display flickers and turns black...the mainboard of the display was changed but the symptoms returned after some few hours of usage...
