MacBook connection to HDMI

Is it possible to connect your MacBook to an HDTV using the HDMI outlets? What cables are necessary since there is no HDMI outlet on the MacBook? I'm guessing there has to be some sort of conversion cable..

Hi guys, I know this isnt in the right place to put this, and ive been searching for days on a fix for my situation, and this is the best location Ive found.
But I have a "17 iMAC, and a "32 Polaroid LCD TV. I am attempting to connecting the computer to the TV via HDMI. My TV allows for 2 HDMI ports, one currently is my cable box, the second will be for my MAC so I can use it as a DVD player and watch the movies on the TV. I have purchased, the MINI DVI Adapter and the HDMI to DVI cables as well as the Audio components.
My issue is, when I plug in my Mini DVI to my HDMI to DVI cable, then plug the whole set up into the back of the computer and / or the back of my TV my computer freezes. I get a light blue fuzzy screen, I can see the desktop and my computer windows in the back, of the light blue fuzzy screen but cant do anything. Mouse still moves, as I can see the cursor as I move it, but cant type, close out, open. Or go into my system prefences and settings.
In the slight chance that the desktop doesnt freeze right away, and I can still use my computer when its hooked up, the second I switch my TV to HDMI 2, the computer freezes.
If I attempt to plug everything in, before I turn the computer on, then power it on. It freezes before I get to the desktop with a light blyue screen and the circline beachball of death stares at me.
Now Im assuming it has something to do with my TV, and the only reason why is because I have used my iMAC and the same cables to plug into my brothers TV which also has HDMI ports and it works fine. I have also plugged a friends laptop with the same cables, and different cables into my TV and his laptop freezes, but when I do the same thing into my brothers TV it works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as its really annoying that I cant get this to work at all.
Thanks for looking into my case. I appreciate it guys!

  • How to connect macbook pro with hdmi? any ideas?

    hi,
as the new macbook, doesn't have a dvi port but a faste thunderbols my good old dvi2hdmi cable is useless.
any ideas, how to connect the new macbook to my hdmi tv?
    thx for help!

    Retina has a HDMI port.
Others have a ThunderBolt, which is backward-compatible with Mini DisplayPort. Get a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and make sure you insert it until essentially ALL of the metal end is inside the jack, and you will be in business.

I could be *very* wrong but did not know you could output from HDMI into displayport consistently with no issues.
Try a mDP to DP cable like this (the mDP end will go directly into the thunderbolt port of your laptop)

What model and year is your MacBook?  Some older MacBooks don't support Audio out via miniport/HDMI (the display miniport is video only).

I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. But check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The Mini-DVI port doen't carry audio at all. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

You could try updating your apple TV and then restarting it. Bit of a guess.

  • How to connect an HDMI monitor as 2nd display?

I want to connect an HDMI monitor to my MacBook Pro to use as my second monitor. I need to know what type of cable to use? I use iPhoto and iMovie extensively and it would really help to have a second monitor. Which port on the MacBook would I use?

If your MBpro has a MiniDisplay port or Thunderbolt port then you buy a MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. (The adapter will plug into the Thunderbolt port).

  • Line Output From Audio Interface Mutes When Connected To HDMI

    Hello Apple Community,
As my first post to the community, I would like to shed some light on an issue I have found no answer to on the internet or support lines. I have spent a great deal of time self-diagnosing and over the phone with technical support for all devices in question.
    Problem:
I have no sound when connected to HDMI. The problem is not exclusive to HDMI, as I bought two Mini DisplayPort adapters (HDMI & VGA) -- neither of which resolved my issue.
    Hardware:
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) - Intel i7, 8GB RAM, GT 650M Graphics
    Audio Interface - Started out with a PreSonus AudioBox 2-In, 2-Out. Now it's a Yamaha Steinberg UR22 (2-In, 2-Out)
Powered Studio Monitors - Yamaha HS7 (Pair)
    External Display - Vizio 37", 1080p TV
At first glance, it may sound like my problem is simply that I'm not set to the correct audio output when I'm connected to HDMI. However, this is not the case. With both audio interfaces, I double-checked that the output did not swap to HDMI when plugging in. Many communities believe this is a ground-loop issue with anything from my interface / speakers, to the HDMI cable itself. When I spoke to an audio specialist from Yamaha, he assured me that grounding issues were not the case. He said that ground-loops will only cause noise (hiss, static, hum, etc.), not a complete mute.
    Thank you,
    Matthew Morris

Okay, so Steinberg responded after 6 days to set up a call time. Three days after that, I finally received the call. Yes, 9 total days.........
Jeff from Steinberg went over all of my issues and went through a whole diagnosis. At the point where I got rid of the stock Yamaha XLR to TRS and used some unbalanced instrument cables I had laying around, the monitors worked! Jeff and I narrowed it down to either bad cables or (more than likely) bad XLR ports. I believe the ladder because the possibility of receiving 2 bad cables is less likely than possibly a single XLR port having a faulty ground or something--which would lead to the above issues.

  • HT1721 computer does not respond when connect to HDMI TV monitor

macbook air does not reconize monitor from HDMI TV

help in troubleshooting Macbook to Sony HDMI... I  HAVE had the miniport/ HDMI cable connection working - I just plugged it into both ports and it worked - i.e. No fussing with "settings". Now, after kids hooked up Wii game – computer to TV does not work…
My <system preferences> -> Display -> detect displays does not register any connection [alert: the arrangement tab of Display preferences is hidden because you only have a singe display attached to this computer].
Q? is it the computer that does not recognize hookup or is it the TV that does not recognize the hookup?
I have done all the standard go online for answers: reboot both, turn off both, connect cable, check input to HDMI, reset PRAM,
    Still no success…
    Your suggestions …??

  • Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video

    Hi,
I just went to the store to get a HDMI-DVI and mini (from my macbook) to DVI to watch my MB on my tv. I only see the desktop background without the icons or any window I have open. What am I doing wrong? Please help Are there any specials steps to see the whole enchilada?
    Here are my tv's specs:
Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video Inputs; 1 RS232 Control; 1 Digital Audio Output; 1 PC Video Input; 1 PC Audio Input
    thank you.

Connect the MB to its AC adapter. Now close the lid on the MB so it goes to sleep. Now plug in a USB mouse to the MB so it wakes up again. When it wakes up with the lid down, only the TV will be used as the display and the menu bar and everything will be on the TV. Once that happens, you can open the MacBook's lid if you need to use the keyboard. You could also plug in a USB keyboard and leave the lid down as an alternative. If you don't own a USB keyboard or USB mouse, you can wake up the MB with another USB device, like a flash memory stick.

macbook pro A1286 HDMI connection to watch TV, then unplug the HDMI cable, mac no sound.
System Preferences -> Sound -> there is only the "digital output _ optical digital output port" option, how to restart no sound, connect to headphones with sound, unplug headphones mac still no sound.

Your Macbook Pro will not support sound vis HDMI.  You will have to tap the audio output port and connect to the TV audio inputs for sound.  You will need a 3.5 mm plug in a 'Y' connector configuration with RCA connectors on the other end.

  • How to watch a DVD from my MacBook to my hdmi tv ?

Hi ... How to watch a DVD from my MacBook to my hdmi tv set ?

Depending on exactly what model MacBook you have, you need an appropriate adapter plus an HDMI cable.  For example:
If your MacBook has a miniDisplayPort you need the Apple MiniDisplayPort-DVI adapter + a DVI-to-HDMI cable.
If your MacBook has a miniDVI port then you just need a miniDVI-to-HDMI cable.  Or you could use an adapter like this + an HDMI cable.
Note: audio is a separate connection from your MacBook's headphone out to your TV's audio-in.

  • Can not select TV speakers when connected via HDMI

I have a MBP fully updated connected to a Sony TV vis HDMI/miniport.  Up until today this configuration was working fine.  Suddenly, I can no longer select the HDMI speakers in my audio preferences.  They are recognized and appear on the list but when I select them it has no effect.  Before today, when the TV was connected the HDMI output would be automatically selected and I could not access the volume control from the menu bar, which is the way I prefer it.
I have restarted with no success in changing this behaviour.  If I open/close the lid, the sound goes to the proper settings for about 2s but then the HDMI speakers are de-selected and the built-in speakers are highlighted.  I can manually select the TV speakers but the setting has no effect.
However, I *am* getting audio output through the TV but can not control volume from the mac or any app.  I slide the volume slider on the menu bar and the audio output does not change.  The sound is also playing from the laptop speakers which is highly annoying.

and now there is no audio through the TV at all.  TV works fine with other inputs such as PS3.  Any help?
