Macbook Core 2 Duo Excel 2008 Not Responding

I have a Macbook Core 2 duo with Snow Leopard. I have Microsoft Office 2008 and recently my computer is running slow, but now excel will not load at all. It shows the color wheel and then the "application does not respond". What should I do

Thanks for all the helpful answers. I mainly use the Korg legacy collection synths, and a variety of Waves plugins, and my current macbook can run quite a few instances of the synths and plugins, so I guess based on the information given the base mac mini should be able to handle my projects ok. As has been mentioned, I guess the best thing to do is to try it.
Thanks again,
Dan

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error.  Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything).   I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs.  Any suggestions?  From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update.  I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
    2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion

  • Change SSD on Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 GHz intel Core 2 Duo late 2008

Now I'm using Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 GHz intel Core 2 Duo late 2008. I would like to know if it is possible to change my 250Gb HDD to a SSD? What is the max of Gb?

Yes, it is possible. The capacity of the drive is limited by what the manufacturers of SSDs are producing and, of course, by the depth of your pockets. Expect to spend $600-900 USD for a 250GB or 256GB unit and $1000-$1600 for a 512GB SSD.

  • Macbook core 2 duo ti tac noise under keyborad

    Hi!
I have a new macbook core 2 duo 2 gh. There is a soft tic tac noise under the keyboard. Is this normal? Where does it come from?
    Thanks,
    ENRIQUE.

    Ola Jenriquegp,
Never heard one on my macbook especially under the E key.
First I thought if was HD clicking sound but the HD is located under your left hand palm rest area, so it must not HD.
Maybe it is the fan sound when it start to kick in or slow down.
If that clicking sound is obvious and you are not comfortable with it, bring that to apple store or authorized apple service center and let them check that for you.

  • Macbook Core 2 Duo speaker balance

    Hi,
I just got a Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz.
I have read about speaker volume and distortion problems which I don't seem to be having. But it sounds to me that the sound coming from the right speaker is louder and clearer than from the left? Has anyone experienced this? It's not very bad, but it is noticable. Should I send the MacBook to repair for this?
    Thanks!
    Danny

Yes, I noticed the same thing. I just bought my MacBook a couple days ago. I was playing around with iTunes last night and noticed I wasn't getting as much left channel as I wanted from the built-in speakers.
Went to sound prefs and changed the balance but could never really hear it get past center when I moved the slider all the way to the left.
Thanks to you guys pointing me to the MIDI utility I was able to use the speaker set up there to listen to each channel. And you're absolutely right, left channel sounds like it's coming from center.
If all MacBooks sound this way, I guess there's nothing that can be done about it. At least I didn't have to spend any time going to the Apple Store and have it explained to me hehe.

  • Macbook Core 2 duo -  lion install problems.

I picked up a used white Macbook Core 2 Duo (2007) recently.  The person I purchased it from installed a new 60GB SSD drive and 4GB of ram and put Lion on the machine.   The computer booted fine for the first 4 times, and then on the 5th time it said "Installing OS X" and then said there was an problem with the install????    The computer was working fine before all this happened.  Now it won't boot.... BTW I did not do any any updates.
We removed and tested the SSD drive... it appears to be fine.
My other problem is that the person who sold the computer to me did not give me original OS disk... is it possible that the OS he used is corrupted?  But then, why would it work fine and then give me the error message after the 5th boot?
Is the problem because I am using an SSD? ... but still makes no sence considering it was running fine before the 5th boot!
Please help, I am looking at purchasing my own copy of Lion and installing it but will this work without having the original Disks?
    Thanks!
(P.S.  When it did work, the Macbook with the SSD and Lion ran dramatically faster than my 2009 15" Macbook Pro.!)

Thanks everyone for their help... it was another bad disk!
I returned the OCZ HD and replaced it with an Intel SSD... The thing has been running spectacular now!  It out performs my Macbook Pro (speed)!
    FYI.
I did some digging and on the OCZ forums there has been A LOT of similar complaints regarding the HD failing in the same way mine did... when I took it back for a refund to the store I purchased it from, the tech said that they have been getting a lot of returns on that specific manufactures SSD's... and not just the entry level ones.
    Thanks again!

  • Refurbished MacBook Core Duo or New MacBook Core 2 Duo w/Edu Discount?

I'm interested in getting an Apple notebook for school and can't decide whether to get the new MacBook Core 2 Duo and use my student discount or just get a refurbished MacBook Core Duo for a few hundred less. Is the Core 2 Duo chip worth the extra money? I plan on using it for my design courses, which use the Adobe and Macromedia suite of applications. Oh, and I plan on playing WoW on it as well.
    Thanks!

Well theres a few important details here:
What version of the Core Duo were you after (Basic Middle or Black) for refurb?
What version are you thinking of for the Edu Discount?
Personally i'm going to university next year and am Planning on buying a Macbook in about March or June (What ever model is out then hopefully a 3rd revision). But from what is out the greatest value out of all Macbooks to date is the Middle Version of the MBC2D.
In the Core Duo generation, the jump from basic to Middle wasn't big. You got a slightly faster processor and Super Drive. Now for the same price difference you not only get the bonus C2D processor you get 1GB of Ram, A Superdrive, and a 80 GB Hard drive. For that reason, the best value i would say is the middle version of the C2D Macbooks.
You may not think that you really need 1 GB of Ram or a 80 GB Harddrive but after using a mac mini (which i unfortunately returned) I quickly realized how slow these machines are without sufficient ram. If you plan on using the Adobe suite which is not yet UB you will have a rough time without at least one gig of ram. By then it would probably be UB, but still, programs like Photoshop and Cinema 4D (If you are taking any computer animation courses) will not run well with just 512 MBs. Leopard, i'm expecting will also recommend aproximately 1 Gig of ram. If you plan on playing WoW and doing Work (Exactly what i'm planning on doing on MB) i'd go for 1 Gig of ram at least no matter what generation you get. The 80 Gigs is also in my opinion required if your running bootcamp. 60 Gig HD is insufficient, because, after being formated and having both Mac OSX and Windows XP (Or Vista) on it, the 60 GB HD may end up as more of 52 Gig HD which isn't much space to devide between to Operating Systems. (After installing +your suites that gives you like 45 Gigs to split+Music or videos you may have... brings you down to like 37 GBs + the 10 Gigs you should keep free for your computer to run fine that gives you about 27 Gigs to devide as freem space). If you plan on only running OSX then 60 Gigs should be sufficient if your not doing video editing. But if you want to run Bootcamp I'd get at least 80 Gigs (I'd go with 120 but the jump in price from 80 to 120 is huge compared the jump from 60 to 80). This is why i think the Middle CD2 is the best Macbook because you get 80 GB HD with 1 Gig of ram, a faster processor and they throw in your Superdrive from a relatively small jump in price. When looking to make a purchase try to get the cheap upgrades if they will help (Eg. a 80 Gig HD over a 60 gig HD for a small price) and try to stay away from expensive premium upgrades (120 GiG HD for much more money- unless you really need it).
    Hope that helps your decision,
Sorry if the grammar/spelling is horrible, I wrote this very quickly and didn't bother with grammar/proof reading.
    Good luck,
I'm sure you will be happy with w/e macbook you choose but like i said i recommend a 80GB HD and 1GB ram at least on either generation of MB. I

Well then it seems like you already know where to get one, so why are you asking here when you already know you can call a service center?

  • DDR II 800MHz in Macbook Core 2 Duo

    Hi!
I've go Macbook Core 2 Duo with 1Gb of DDR 667MHz RAM. I want to upgrade RAM to 4Gb, but I can't find any RAM with 667MHZ (5300) speed, only 800 MHz (6400) modules are available. Will this work in Macbook?
P.S. I have PC based on the same CPU and Chipset and it works well with 800MHz modules, it just slows down memory speed to 667MHz.

    Check out OWC 667Mhz RAM

You should check the specific MacBook model you have and use that to select the correct memory.

  • IMac (Intel core 2 duo early 2008) wifi problem

I've recently moved into a new basement office, and my iMac (2.4 GHz core 2 duo - early 2008) is having terrible trouble picking up my wireless network. No surprise you may think, with it being in a basement - but my iPad, when held next to the iMac in the exact same spot, is over 10 times faster (13+ Mbps compared to barely over 1 Mbps on the iMac). My phone also picks up the wifi signal absolutely fine.
I've had issues with the iMac's weak wifi pickup before, but never this bad and it's now unworkable. Changing router channels makes very little difference. Does anyone have any suggestions as to anything else I can try? Would using a USB wifi dongle help?
I'm loathe to have to buy a wireless bridge, as I can see full well that the signal in here should be plenty strong enough!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Why does my Macbook Core 2 Duo 13" keep shutting itself off and/or repetively rebooting on its own?

My Macbook Core 2 Duo 13" won't stay on for any significant time anymore. When it does, it seems that the slightest movement, or pressing a key will shut it down or it just shuts down on its own. Or it reboots repetitively after chiming. Or it remains on as it is doing now for the last 30 minutes, long enough to see if it needed a firmware update. It's never on long enough to really use it anymore.
When there is no image on the screen, I often can hear the fan or drive running quietly in the background. I can turn it off by powering down with the button. Without the power cord, it will eventually drain the battery if I don't force shut it down.
I have verified that the hard drive is OK by removing it and mounting it externally.
I have been unable to do a hard system reboot (hold down powerbutton until system starts and continue to hold until tone) - no tone, just keeps rebooting.
When it stayed on long enough, I tried to install the firmware 1.1 update. Message was that it didn't need it.
I have tried removing one RAM card at a time ( it has 1GB + 512Mb). Haven't really noticed any change. "POST" message is OK when it starts
Any ideas? I've looked at all the "usual suspects".  Thanks!
