MacBook Cracks (white, late 2009)

Being extremely careful with my MacBook, still three cracks appeared on an upper case and a display case. I am sure they are caused by a poor manufacturing or design. It appeared close to "joins" of a display and close to a USB pit. My Mac is still under warranty, however nothing has been agreed with an Apple service provider in The Netherlands. Even more, to get my Mac repaired, it would cost me 690 EUR when the brand new MacBook costs 999 EUR !
I am very disappointed. I have bought so many Apple products already and I feel as a real fan, however I have to share my disappointment with all friends and colleagues. Didn't expected it will happen.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately they may be within their right to assume it was negligence on your part, though you may not have knowledge of how inflexible USB is. The interior of USB itself is not a solid metal connector on the case. It is like an integrated circuit in terms of material, though not component density. If you bend the USB connector any when pulling it out or pushing it in, it may cause the logicboard connector to the USB connector to get damaged. And the housing of the USB connector might get damaged too if you bend it any. If you have not tripped over cables any, or bent the USB connector in any fashion and always plugged it in at a 90 degree angle from the port entrance, and pulled it out at a 90 degree angle, and no one else has access to your machine, you may be within your right to dispute it, but I'd tell the store manager exactly how you handle everything with the computer, show them the bag the computer has always gone in, tell them you haven't spilled anything on it, or given access of the computer to anyone else who doesn't know to be as gentle as that. Children or pets have been known to damage computers by accident and not tell their owners!

  • Problem installing Windows 8 via Bootcamp on MacBook Pro 13 (late 2009).

    Hello,
I've installed Windows 8 Pro on my MacBook Pro 13 (Late 2009) which does not support Windows 8. I've started installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp, then interupted the installation and pluged-in the Windows 8 Disk, and after formating the partition, I've installed Windows 8 64-Bit.
Here is the problem. The Windows works fine, BUT after restart when I hold 'Alt' and choose EFI Boot (Windows 8's partition), Windows 8 starts loading but then suddenly there is a white flash and it restarts again. So after shut down or restart I cannot boot it.
Do you think that this is because I do not have Bootcamp installed on the Windows 8?
I've downloaded the supported software for Windows 8, but when I click setup.exe, it is giving me the following error:
This version of Bootcamp is not intended for this computer model. I've been trying to install it for more than 78 hours, so I'll be extremely gratefull to whoever help me. Thank you in advance.
P.S. Mac OS X partition boots fine.

If it is really not possible, I get it. But there are plenty of people that are running Windows 8 on the same model, that is powerfull enough to run Win 8. I'm actually running it, but until shut down or restart . Can't I edit Info.plst file alternative for Windows 8 like I did to allow BootCamp to image burn my USB on my model? I mean my model is same as the next one. I can't see why the drivers for mid 2010, won''t work on mine...

  • I have a MacBook 13-inch, Late 2009, I'd like to get a cable to connect a monitor.  However I keep order the wrong part.  Can somebody tell me what part I need.

I have a MacBook 13-inch, Late 2009, I'd like to get a cable to connect a monitor.  However I keep order the wrong part.  Can somebody tell me what part I need.

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

  • How to reset the SMC on macbook pro 15" late 2009

Does anyone know how to reset the SMC on the macbook pro 15" late 2009?
The instructions listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 does not work.
There are alot of posts in here about it, but I cant find any solutions on who to do this on the late 2009 model that have the build-in battery.

Turn it off, connect the power supply then hold down shift/control/option while holding down the power button for 5 seconds - the power supply light will go off and on to show it's done.

  • Recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 late 2009 to an ssd but only getting a quarter of the speed

Hi, i recently upgraded my macbook pro 13 inch to a OCZ VERTEX 3 240gb ssd. The drive is supposed to be able to have write speeds of 500mb/s and read speeds of up to 550 mb/s but when i run a speed test on the disk im only getting a max write speed of around 105 mb/s, and read speed of 137mb/s ish, now the negotiated speed is only 1.5gb/s I have trim enabled, and i have tried changing the link speed but with no luck. The drive is rated for 6gb/s also. The drive is not in the hard drive bay because my hard drive cable is broken, i have it in the optical bay right now, could someone please help me or tell me how to make the drive at least go up to sata 3 speeds,

The 2009 MBPs were built with a very cheaply made HDD to LB cable. So I bet if you change that cable you will see more speed from that SSD.

  • MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) black screen and reset smc

My new macbook will not start occasionally, there is a black screen after the boot sound and screen with apple and wheel, in black screen i can hear the sounds changing the volume level, but the only way to work is forcing the shutdown and restart until the mac start normal.

You are correct that the SMC reset procedure is slightly different from earlier MacBooks...

  • MacBook Pro 17" late 2009 - Black screen on boot, not even a grey screen

    Got a monstrous problem.
Started up my MacBook Pro (bought in Feb. This year, core 2 duo 2.88GHz/4 Gb RAM - basically the top specced model.)
Booted up today, no grey start-up screen. No screen at all. Yet I can still log into Snow Leopard, but again no screen. Rebooted into boot camp, heard windows start. Managed to log in again no screen. Volume controls, keyboard illumination work. Just a black screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM, etc. with no success. Cannot use hardware test as the screen simply does not start.
Any ideas before I throw the effing thing from a 5th floor window in frustration?
Is this the Nvidia problem other folk have experienced?
I am tempted to ask for a new machine spending 2 months on and off with my previous MacBook Pro in and out of repair if this is a hardware problem that has been fixed in recent Macs.
    Regards,
    J

I had the same problem just now. My 15" MBP (6.2). I followed the following steps and it worked for me. I used another Mac in my house to use screen sharing to accomplish these things:
    1) access the /private/var/vm/ directory on the nonworking computer from the working computer. This is invisble so you will have to press cmdshiftg in the finder and go to /volumes/YOURHARDDISKNAME/private/var/vm to get there or use an application that lets you view invisble folders like PathFinder.
    2) delete the sleepimage file
    3) delete the /system/library/extensions.mkext file
    4) eject the drive (drag to the trash)
    5) press the power button to turn off the non working computer
    6) turn the nonworking computer back on normally(cross your fingers) then if it works,
    7) open up the the terminal.app in /applications/utilities
    8) type sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    9) make sure there is no sleepimage file again
That worked for me...hope it helps for you!

You shouldn't lose any data when upgrading, but always play it safe and make a backup first.

  • I have a Macbook 13-inch, Late 2009 I'm running 10.8 Mountain Lion. iWork '09 will not work, how can I fix that without purchasing new programs from the App Store?

    Help! 911! S.O.S.

Update iWork to Mountain Lion compatible versions.
Software Update is now operated therough the Mac App Store. I'm guessing that you have a version not purchased through the Mac App Store, but on DVD?
If so, take a look at this thread. It's important to have the apps in the original folder. More details in the thread.

However drop an SSD in that puppy and bump the RAM to 8 GB and you'll never miss the i5 or i7 processor.

  • 64-bit Windows 7 on late 2009 iMacs only?

In the Boot Camp Install-Setup documentation I read:
You can use a version of Windows Vista or Windows 7
with any of these Mac computers:
    - A Mac Pro or MacBook Pro introduced in early 2008 or later
    - An iMac or MacBook introduced in late 2009 or later
    Is this true?
Is it really not possible to use 64-bit Windows 7 on a late 2008 iMac?
    (Why...?)
    Thanks.

Generic, yes, but didn't take into account EFI64 (UEFI 2.x) req'd to native boot a 64-bit DVD of Vista SP1 or later. Apple has a list of those that are supported (actually, a list of UN-supported).

  • Advise on fixing/glueing Top Case cracks on Macbook White Unibody 2009 A1342

    Hi Folks!
I have a white unibody 2009 that has a crack on the top case by the ethernet port.
This is probably a stress related crack from picking up the case from the palm rest and the polucarbonate case just couldn't hold the pressure and cracked that area.
It is way out of warranty, but still wanted to check with you all if Apple might be willing to either fix it for free themselves or give me the part (the top case) to replace myself. This looks more like a design or material flaw, since this macbook has been handled just like any other laptop would. Normal use!
If not, I could take it apart and attempt to fix it by glueing it from inside.
Has anyone tried this and what glue would be the strongest fix for this poly material? Any brand you recommend? Something stronger than superglue or gorilla?
Also, not sure yet if there is any space between the ethernet port and the case to maybe add some kind of rigid plastic to the bottom of the case under the crack in order to add support and keep it toghether.
If so, what would you recommend I use as support? It would have to be a very thin plastic, not sure what though.
I'd appreciate "constructive" advise. Thanks a lot!

You’ve run into the main problem with user forums. Since we aren’t trained Mac mechanics and no one from Apple reads or posts to these forums except as users, you’ve got to hope that someone reads your post who has had the exact same problem as yours and has found a solution for the problem.
