MacBook crashes regularly

Hello there,
hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction. My MacBook (Purchased May 2006) crashes at least twice a day, especially when I am working. What's really annoying is that when I boot into Windows or Linux (Yellow Dog) it never crashes. I work as a software tester and I always think it is the software I'm testing but I've proven it's not. Anybody got an Idea?

I love my macbook!!!! wrote:
Make sure that all your software is up to date.
What does having the software up to date have to do with it?
If the installed software used to work then it should still work. Software does not wear out or go bad.
My point is, there are reasons to have your software up to date and there are also reasons to not update certain things, but, if a problem shows up that did not used to exist, then there is a problem that needs solving that should have nothing to do with an update.

After updating OS, iPad crashes regularly. What can I do?

If your iPhone, iPod or iPad, or even just an app, is freezing or crashing regularly, you may review your crash logs to diagnose any reportable issues. Crash logs contain information about what the iPad and its apps were doing just prior to crashing.
To find a crash log file, sync your iPhone, iPod or iPad first, then locate the appropriate log files using the path for your OS shown below. An app's log file’s name should start with the app’s name, for example.
    Mac OS X
    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your iDevice’s name>/
    Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\<your iDevice’s name>\
    Windows Vista
    C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\<your iDevice’s name>\
Usually, an iDevice user chooses to allow the reporting of crashes to Apple, Inc. automatically, this being a choice when initially setting up your device. Each time a sync is made, the crash logs get reported. So, Apple has a pretty good idea who's chashing when and where, even why, already. If they acknowledged every crash of an iDevice individually, each and every email to you would have to be redundant to what you've just experienced for yourself. Rest assured, Apple learns a lot from the gross collection of crash reports.
I've just taken a look at my orginal iPad's crash log which shows some 1,500 files, with at least 1,000 of the crashes related to the iPad's low memory. I sense that your review of your own iPad crash reports would pretty much mirror mine.
This is a dilemma, for sure. First, the iPad is really just an original proof-of-concept device. It has been designed with many factors in mind, one being product segmentation. Apple doesn't want the iPad to cannibalize the MacBooks too quickly so there must be some limitations built into the iPad to prevent unwanted occurrences. After all, the MacBooks make up 75% of Apple's business these days. Balancing the MacBooks and the iPads amounts to a dangerous business and the consequences of wrong decisions can become catastrophic.
The amount of memory in the iPad is obviously limited, purposely. The Daily Newspaper demonstrated this fact early on. Today, Apple is pushing greater resolutions requiring bigger files for HD stuff and app developers are assuming, probably, that they can eventually force Apple to increase memory sizes in the iPads. We users expect the Pulse app, for example, to function without flaws but, of course, this app interacts directly with the internet where sites have files in sizes the iPad cannot easily handle. It's a programmer's nightmare, balancing memory requirements.
Apple's competitors know all about these common crashes, too. Watch the tablets appear with greater amounts of memory offered, if only to make a manufacturer's products look technically superior to Apple's. However, Apple is famous for saying "NO!" to a lot of technology for sound reasons. But, future iPads are likely to include increased memory which means that our original iPads will quickly become out-of-date since content providers seem to be assuming that the iPad will someday replace the notebook computer.
Apple may not have anticipated the early enterprise adoption of the iPad but that adoption is becoming rampant and the demand to stop all this crashing will grow more loud quickly. Apple knows all about this issue and we might only wait for both software and hardware improvements. Content providers may hold the most immediate solution, though, by showing more discipline with their creations.

  • HT1338 my macbook crashes and cant send error report, when i try, it says "error report failed"

My macbook crashes and when I start it again, there's a crash report and I click on send to apple, after a minute or so it says failed to send to apple. It has happened many times and I think it's getting worse since I can't send any reports.
    What should I do?

    Hello Firah,
Don't worry or even bother sending the report, Apple doesn't want to hear about 10.5.x at all... if they eer did.
Copy & Paste a few lines here, maybe a couple dozen, we'll take a look.

  • After upgrading to OS lion 10.8.2 my macbook crashed when upgrading iPhoto, Aperture and MS Office. has anyone simular problems?

since I did an upgrade yesterday (sept 20th 12) my macbook crashed and does an autoantic restart when doing a upgrade. It occurs doing so for iPhoto, MSoffice or Aperture.
Can someone help me on this issue?

My late 2009 13" Macbook is now very laggy. For example, the cursor won't respond until many seconds after I place a finger on the touchpad. When I use the keyboard to increase or decrease volume or screen brightness, there is a noticeable lag between my inputs and what I see. Every time I pause between typing words, I find the keyboard won't respond until I wait a few more seconds. This is very disappointing. I need to roll back until Apple are able to look into any potential issues. I didn't have any such problems prior to upgrade.

  • Macbook crash caused by video

Problem: My Macbook crashes and reboots when I watch You Tube or other video content or when I do video chat sessions (e.g., Google Hangouts). It doesn't crash every single time I watch a video or do a chat, but it does crash often and unpredictably. Sometimes it'll crash directly after I have rebooted. When it crashes, the screen suddenly goes black, and the laptop restarts itself. It happens on both Chrome and Safari browsers.
    Background:
I've had the laptop 7 years, but the problem started only recently. My hard drive was failing, so I had to install a new one. The hard drive upgrade required me to install Snow Leopard from the CD onto the new drive, restore my data from my Time Machine external disk, and use System Update to install all patches. I did all of this, and the laptop is generally running well, except for video content. I also deleted and reinstalled the Chrome and Adobe Flash applications, but that has not helped.
    System Software:
      System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
      Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0
    Hardware:
      Model Name: MacBook
      Model Identifier: MacBook3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
Any suggestions for fixing or diagnosing this issue? Should I take it into an Apple store for them to look at?
    Thanks,
    Rick

  • OS X began crashing regularly

Hi, I recently learned that I can post the panic.log here possibly to find some clues to what is going on to make the my OS crash regularly within the last 3 months; or ever since I installed Adobe CS3 Design Premium pack of new graphic softwares.
I pasted the whole log here, which started just right after I installed the new softwares. I could not find any previous log, probably because this never happened to me before during all the seven years I've had this computer. I didn't even know that it was possible for OS X to crash. Sometimes it crashed for no apparent reasons, but in most instances if not all I think either Photoshop or some other CS3 software or more than one were opened. A couple of months before this I did add a new hard drive that was fully compatible and nothing happened after that. Until the CS3 pack. I thank you, for any clues at all that you might think of.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • My macbook crashed, and i want to sync my phone with my new macbook

My Macbook crashed, and with it I lost my entire music library; at least the part that wasn't synced to my iPhone 4S. I purchased a new macbook and would love to transfer the songs FROM my iphone TO my macbook, but I keep getting this message - which I am fearful will erase the precious few songs I did save on the iPhone:
Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books, and tones from this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
Can somebody please advise? Thank you.

    Hi evanlovett,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you no longer have the computer that had your iTunes Library stored on it and you want to move what music you still have on your iPhone to your new computer. If the music was purchased from iTunes you can get this music back to your iTunes Library two different ways. You can either transfer purchases from the iPhone to the iTunes Library, or you can just download the music again from the Purchased section of iTunes. I will post the information on both ways to recover your purchased music below. If the music on your iPhone came from a CD or another source (not purchased from iTunes) there would be no way to transfer it to your iTunes Library.

Hannahdb1 what specific Adobe applications are you attempting to reinstall?  Do you receive any specific error messages?  Finally what version of Mac OS are you using?

  • Macbook crashes upon startup

Hllo, my MacBook crashes during booting the startup phase. I've tried different solutions that i read about on various forums, such as using the disc utility services, but none of Them helps. my Mac hd is inaktive and cannot repair it, the reinstalling of the os x maverick wont start and so on. Though i tried to use an installation dvd with an older version of os x and it wouldn't start indtaling, but when i opened the DU there it could activate my hd an i could see the files on the disc in the disc image, but when i tried to restart the computer from the active hd it would crash again. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks in advance

She could have a bad hard drive. There have been certain model drives in MacBooks failing recently.

  • My Macbook crashed and I can't figure out....

I had iWeb and a whole website all done. Domain name and all... just a perfect personal site.
    My Macbook crashed.
I got a new hard drive installed and am going thru re-installing and re-setting things to my liking... and when I open iWeb and put in my .Mac id and password, it asks me to "create a new site?!"... how do I access the old one? It's still all there... when I type in my domain name to a browser, I see my site and all that was in it... and when I check the .Mac site, it's all there.
How do I get to it from the laptop - the re-freshed one?

You can't open your site in iWeb unless you have a backup copy of the domain file.
You can get some help here....
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebBackupretrieve.html
If its any consolation, I had two crashes before I invested in 2 external firewire drives which have a complete bootable backup of everything on my Mac plus a third drive with Time Machine.

  • Firefox 11 Crashing Regularly on OS X Snow Leopard

After upgrading to FF 11, the browser crashes regularly. It usually happens on pages with some sort of flash on it, whether it be a video page or even a page with flash ads. I have tried turning off the hardware option in flash. I tried turning any video downloading plugins off. I have also tried running in safe mode.
Safe mode works best, but it will eventually crash after some time. I am able to surf in Safari with no problems, which leads me to believe the problem is not with flash, but with FF 11 and flash.
FF 11 crashes so hard, I am unable to get a Crash ID as my whole machine freezes and I have to do a hard restart.

  • Adobe pro XI crashes regularly.

I have Acrobat XI Pro - and Windows 7 (64-bit). Acrobat crashes regularly - every time I use it. I get to use it once (e.g., I can add merge some pages to a document). However, once I save it and then try to open another document, the program freezes up and I get a "Not Responding"

    Hi Sam,
Doing repair disc permissions, normally should not create problems, reason being this is Apple's own built-in utility.
I am guessing there might have been permission issues already on your computer and repair disk permission tried to resolve that problem. But if the problem is severe these things may happen.
I would suggest you first you may try it again if that didn't resolve you should contact Apple support. They may help to repair the permissions.

When I type "exit" to get to the bios, I restore to default settings, save changes and reboot. Then Windows starts and everything works fine for a little while.
I have also tried to reset the CMOS without any luck.
    This is my PC:
    Motherboard: MSI Z97M-G43
    SSD: Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K 3,5GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB PhysX CUDA
    Please advise.

I updated the bios today and the computer has been running perfect all day.
    Hope the update worked
