Macbook crashes when internet connection is lost from cable modem

for the last couple of weeks Comcast internet has been failing at almost the same time every day - around 10am. i have spoken with them and they know they have a major problem in the area. the issue i have is that my MacBook Pro, when the internet goes down, completely crashes shutting itself down & restarting with that multi-language message that my 'computer has had a problem.' i have run every diagnostic, Disk Utility Repair, deleted applications, used Wifi, used ethernet, on and on and on...
most of the time, i cannot even restart the MacBook. if i disconnect ethernet or turn off WiFi - no problem. it goes through the startup flawlessly.
one other strange thing happening is i have two websites that will never completely load. no problem on the iPad or iPhone 6, only the MacBook. but these websites don't have to be open when the crash happens.
any ideas? i am running Yosemite 10.10.1. oh, and it happens when i am running Safari, Chrome or Foxfire, though it seems to happen a lot more since the last Safari update. thanks...

OK, for sake of argument:
1. Quit Safari
2. Check the ownership and permissions of Home -> Library -> Safari folder and write those down (click once on the folder and select Get Info from the File menu, and make sure the triangle is dropped down on Ownership and Permissions so all the privileges are shown).
3. Drag Home -> Library -> Safari to the desktop
4. Reopen Safari
See if the issue reproduces itself. If the issue doesn't reproduce itself, then it is something corrupt in the Safari info for your user. If it does reproduce itself, something is wrong with your user level internet settings or possibly Corefoundation settings which Safari is sensitive to.
You can always quit Safari and move back that folder to where it came from and make sure the permissions are retained.

  • ATV returns to home screen when Internet connectivity intermittently lost

I'm using Apple TV 2nd generation running software v4.4.2 over WiFi. I can watch about 3-4 minutes of video, or browse the Movies menu for about 3-4 minutes, before being thrown back to the home screen (missing the Movies menu) with an error message saying the Internet connection is lost. Then a couple of seconds later the Movies menu re-appears and eveything works fine for anoter 3-4 minutes. It makes the ATV unusable and it's infuriating. Any idea why:
      - only the ATV complains about intermittent loss of Internet connectivity (my Mac and iPhone are on the same WiFi and never have any problem)?
       - if there was loss of Internet connectivity for a few seconds, why doesn't ATV play from buffer, or even pause, instead of throwing me back to the main menu?
      - eveything used to work fine before I upgraded to v4.4.2?
More importantly, what can be done to fix this?
    Many thanks.

Thanks for this. Downloaded istumbler and installed on OSX 10.7. It crashes.
It can't just be a network issue: I have no problem streaming audio and video to a Mac, PC or phone on the same WiFi. And if the ATV software was designed correctly, it should just buffer - not bomb out - in case of an intermittent network issue.

  • InDesign CC 7 crashes when network connection is lost.

    Hi all,
I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with InDesign CC7. I tend to work on documents from our server at work, and each time the network connection is interrupted (I undock my laptop to walk around, switchover from wireless to wired, brief hiccup in the lan, etc) and I have an InDesign document open, I recieve an error message from InDesign that I've lost the network connection to the document (fair enough).
When I acknowledge that message, InDesign becomes unresponsive and crashes. You'd think that as soon as the network connection is reestablished (usually a fraction of a second), the connection to the document would be reestablished, or at worst, I'd have to do it manually. When I restart InDesign, I usually am able to enter recovery mode and get my work back, but on occasion, I lose quite a substantial portion of my work. This has lead to inaccuracies and duplication, becasue I think I've taken information out of one portion of the manual and put it somewhere else, but in reality, the information I removed has been replaced during the recovery process.
I don't understand why the program crashes each time a network connection is lost. The obvious answer is to work locally and save on the network, but I shouldn't have to do that to keep the program from crashing. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. Thanks.

You may also want to edit the advanced power settings on your computer to not turn off the hard drives, not put the computer to sleep, etc.
You can get to these settings in windows by right clicking on your desktop, select personalize, then screen saver in the lower right. Now click on the "Change power settings" link towards the bottom, then change the plan settings for the plan that is currently in use.  You will then see the "change advanced power settings" link.  I'm sure there is an easier way to get to it, that is just how I always do it and I tend to be a creature of habit
**edit** the other way is Control Panel -> Power Options
And also be sure to configure your network adapter so that windows can't turn it off.
Here is a microsoft link with a handy fix-it tool to automatically turn off the network adapter power management settings:

  • MacBook Crashing when Camcorder connected...

Bought the Insignia 720p HD camcorder from Best Buy. Read that plenty of people have used it with their Macs, albeit they had to download alternative movie editing software etc...
The problem is: When I connect it via USB 2.0 to my MacBook the MacBook crashes. It pops up with a bulletin that states I need to hold down the power button or hit the restart key to reboot my Mac. When I unplug the camcorder and restart, no problems. When I try to restart with the camcorder still plugged in, it states the same every time until I unplug it.
Driver Problem? Other issue? Any ideas? Obviously some people are using this with a Mac so I don't understand the issue...

  • Mutt (IMAP) freezes when Internet connection is lost

    Hi all,
I'm currently using Mutt to read my mail, which is fetched using
offlineimap from Gmail. It works fine.
I'm trying to set up the same configuration on a small
netbook. Due to hard disk space constraints I prefer not to
download the mail. Instead I'm reading it directly from the
server using Mutt's own IMAP implementation.
However, this doesn't work very well. I get frequent freezes when
I loose my wireless Internet connection. Basically, Mutt becomes
completely unresponsive and I have to suspend and kill it.
You can reproduce this behaviour by simply shutting down the
Internet connection while Mutt is communicating with the IMAP
server. It waits indefinetely and pressing any key does not have
    any effect.
I've tried setting different variables to avoid freezes without
any luck. Below you can have a look at my .muttrc file. Any
suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I got rid of mutt when I realized there was no solution to get rid of the 5 second delay when launching mutt because it insisted initiating a connection instead of just launching and letting me decide when to connect to IMAP... I would go back to mutt in a heartbeat, but I guess until this is getting fixed I am staying with firefox...
I'm using offlineimap along with mutt to achieve roughly what you want and I couldn't be happier.
Besides, I'm also using notmuch (in AUR) to get super-fast Gmail-like search.

  • Desktop software crashes when I connect Bold via USB cable

I start version 5.0 of Blackberry Desktop Software.  All the icons come up.  I then plug in my Bold, the desktop software picks up the PIN number, and then I get the window that says Desktop software has stopped working and will shut down.
I found the instructions for a clean uninstall of the desktop software.  I followed them and then reinstalled Desktop manager.  No change in the problem.
Desktop software was working just fine until I got a nasty virus.  I ended up installing a disk image from several months prior to get rid of it.  Ever sense the new image, I can't get the desktop software to work.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

I visited that link a couple of times, but it hasn't been of much use because the thing about my problem is that my phone is connecting and disconnecting rapidly, but works with other laptops with the same usb cable just fine, also if I connect another USB cable such as my hard drive it works great. What I don't get is why does my phone connect to other computers with the same USB cable well but not mine, and when I connect something else to my computer it works just fine too. What can I do now?

  • E2000 keeps losing internet connection on Motorola SBV5121 Cable Modem

I bought a E2000 last week. Used my wired PC to setup which failed as it said internet connection not detected.
tried reinstalling after powercycling the modem and routers but still it could not detect the internet.
I used my friends macbook pro to setup router wirelessless and the E2000 + internet connected successfully.
I connected my PC using ethernet and it worked bingo! Shortlived as in 2 days again no internet was detected. Now i have tried everything but no avail. My friend out of town so cannot try reinstalling it using Mac book.
Any known issues with the cable modem and Linksys E2000?
    Thanks
    Akshay

Bypass the router and connect your computer directly to the modem.
Make sure that you can access the Internet when you connect the computer directly to the modem.
If you can access the Internet through the modem then try to configure the router manually.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port on the router. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Now try to reconfigure the router manually.

  • Internet Connection Issues between Airport & Cable Modem

I'm posting this because I couldn't find a similar answered question here, and I hope to save someone else the grief I went through trying to get my wireless network working.
Bought an Airport Extreme to connect to my non-wifi cable modem. The Airport had no difficulty setting up the network, and all of our computers and wireless devices were able to connect to the network. Unfortunately, none of them could connect to the internet.
The problem turned out to be that you need to edit the default network configuration to add the DNS server addresses of your cable provider. As soon as I did that, all the devices had internet. As far as I can tell, the settings live on the modem, but are not picked up by the Airport in quick setup process.
I hope this saves someone else a trip to the Apple store or a long support call.

  • Why does firefox crash when the internet connection is lost?

We have been having trouble with our internet connection recently and firefox crashes whenever the connection is lost, but this didn't used to happen, so I was wondering why this was happening.

If there is any intermittent issues or connection is lost you will revert to the menu, regardless. The 'apps' are fed via server and there is nothing stored on the unit, it simply caches when you are online.
As for the initial wait time. That could be due to ISP throttling, interference, using another DNS

In "purchases" while in my App Store, Mountain Lion says, "an error has occurred" and the green 'download' button is grey and I cannot re-start the download. I was abroad when I purchased this app and during download, my internet connection was lost. At the time, Apple was still offering the e-chat, so I did that and the man was very helpful and it was a quick fix, so my download button turned green again, and I was able to begin the download. BUT during the download, I was kicked offline once again, and I decided to wait until I was back in the USA. I will go in to an Apple store and ask assistance, but if there is something I am missing, I'd like to try that first. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves?

Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves? Once it renders the page it should forget about the page. Why does it behave when some link is clicked when there is no internet? It should just say internet not available or some crap. Why die, sulk, crash?? I don't get it! 3 series was much much much better!

I should add, I've re-downloaded Firefox, but that doesn't look like it has helped any. Still get seemingly inexplicable crashes.

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPod to the PC when iTunes is running....

I have written about this problem before, but there have not been any successful solutions as of this date. I will explain my situation a little further and maybe someone can help.
Most of the time, when I connect my iPod to my pc while iTunes is running, the instance the iPod shows up on the library site, and whenever I move the cursor, iTunes crashes, so I have to close iTunes right away and try to disconnect my iPod. Most of the time, a message comes up that says info is being transferred to the ipod and that I shouldn't disconnet it at that time, but I usually go ahead because I know it isn't transferring at that time, since itunes has crashed.
Sometimes, after I have clicked on the first message to go ahead and disconnect my ipod, another messages comes up that says something to the effect of, "You can't disconnect because it is being used by another server at this time." So I click "OK" and then iTunes stays on for a few moments which gives me time to transfer a song or two, but then itunes crashes as soon as it finished transferring or before it finishes.
As anyone can imagine, this has really become a hugh problem. Having an iPod and not being able to use iTunes makes it very unhandy. I'm not able to add any new music or any of the playlists which i have been working on. Does anyone have a solution, or any suggestions as to what may be going on? It would be deeply appreciated.
I plan to restore my iPod in a day or two if I don't get a solution to this, but I don't have all of the music, videos, etc. that I have on the iPod since I removed much of it from iTunes to help the computer run faster. I had over 2000 items in the library, so it was pulling the pc down and it was taking forever to use the computer.
I am unable to use any of the software to transfer everything from my iPod to the iTunes library because of the problem with iTunes crashing when I connect the iPod, so this isn't a solution at this time.
    Someone, please help!
HP   Windows XP   Using DSL for internet access

I suspect a hardware problem.  But do the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Resore the iPid to factoery defaults/new iPod.
In the latter part of you post, I thin you ar sayng that you do not have a syning computer and the music is not on the computer. If so, do the following so you will not lose anthing (or very little) when you restore.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Backup. This will make a backup so you can restore to the backup

  • MBA loses internet connection after waking from sleep

I have a new Macbook Air running Mavericks and new 802.11ac Airport Extreme router.
My problem is that the MBA drops the internet connection after waking from sleep. I tried the solution offered by the OP, but it didn't work.
In my case, here's what I have to do to get a connection again. I open the Network preference pane, and then choose "Assist me..." and then "Diagnostics". Invariably it will show a green light beside Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Settings and Network Settings. I have 5 bars showing in the WiFi menu bar icon. But ISP, Internet and Server will be yellow.
When I go through the steps prompted by the wizard, the ISP/Internet/Server lights turn green on the third screen where I select the wireless network I want to join.
It seems as if it's connecting to the WiFi network when it wakes from sleep, but losing the internet connection?
Note: I have a new iMac as well running Mavericks and don't have this problem with it.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
