MACBOOK CRAZY!!

So my macbook has been crazy lately. It shuts off whenever it wants out of nowhere, Safari would open for 30 seconds before crashing and now itunes has done the same. So i made a new account and have been using that. i want to move all my pictures and music over to the new account, and the pictures have but the itunes library wont.
i put it in the shared folder and whenever i open it or try to import it nothing happens. so confused!! i want to save my music and pictures and dont have another hard drive to put it on. I've tried archiving the music but it doesn't work. HELP!!!!!!!

I think we should figure out the real problem before moving more around.
Also, if your data is important, you will get an external Firewire disk to backup to, asap.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot again.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

Screen dimming without selecting it to do so!!

Hi, I am a Macbook newbie and am sorting through some teething issues. The latest is that I have selected in my power setting 'custom' this selection has delays of 35 mins for screensaver and 40 mins for screen off. Now my question is this,I have NOT checked the 'dim screen before screen off' selection, but after 5-8 mins the screen dims down. moving the mouse puts it on full again..
I know it should do that on battery but this is on AC and on my own custom setting...
Any insight?
Also one more question, why does firefox display selection boxes in a crappy square manner whereas Safari (which I cant use as it is incompatible with a lot of websites) has nice little rounded glowing blue boxes?

Well that just makes my macbook crazy then!! I really do not understand the dimming when NOTHING is selected for it to do so.. anyone else have dimming?
Oh and regards to safari, it does not work with yahoo mail, my university peoplesoft network thing, and nearly all of the major companies I have been applying to in the last few weeks (final year at uni!) one even required WINDOWS XP I had to go and use the cluster down the road to do their online test...
Firefox covers most of the problems apart from the last one.
Although it seems to load images quite slowly on our 10mbps lan...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Graphic card problem maybe? Since when I have changed the hard drive to my macbook pro and I installed all the new softwares, my mac is very slow and the screen gives crazy pictures,could maybe be the graphic card, does anybody have experienced this?

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

Certain applications overwork my macbook and the fan goes crazy. Is there a fix or solution for this?

I purchased a 13.3" MacBook Pro in February of 2010. About a month later, I began to notice that certain applications that don't require much, Safari, MSWord, iTunes, were causing the fans to kick in at crazy speeds and the base of the computer was too hot to touch. Is there a patch or fiz for this, or should I return my macbook for a new?

New MacBook Pro, fan goes crazy on iPhoto screen saver

I just got a new 15in MacBook Pro (running Lion of course) with the following specs:
   - 8 gigs RAM
   - 2.2 GHz
   - 500 gig 7200 hard drive
I had my screen saver set to cycle randomly through 350 pictures from my wedding. Within 1 minute of the screensaver activating, my fan kicks in full speed. When I go into Activity Monitor (while the fan is still going nuts) no processes are using more than 7% CPU. Within a couple of minutes of resuming work, the screen saver dies down and everything is fine.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I'm a programmer and even having multiple applications in active use, the fan doesn't kick on. If I switch to Arabesque screen saver, the fan doesn't act crazy. I suppose it's not a big deal to use a different screen saver but there's no logical reason for my fan to go insane when all it's doing is cycling through some pictures.
I did try the steps to reset the SMC but it did not seem to solve the issue.
Any help appreciated!

You were right One of my other iPhoto albums must have corrupted pictures because I went to a backup that contained only the wedding pictures and everything is fine. Always nice when the answer happens to be something simple!

System Preferences > Universal Access. Turn off Voice Over in the "Seeing" tab:

Macbook pro 2010...cursor is acting crazy jumping everywhere and responding very slow...thought it was the track pad but I plugged in a mouse and it still does the same thing...is this a virus?..and can someone please help?...

As to what it might be, that's hard to say. You should try some basic troubleshooting... Repair the hard drive with disk utility. Boot in safe mode and see if it happens then, log in to a different user account and see if it happens there, reboot from another system and see if it happens.
Apparently some people have had this kind of problem caused by swelling batteries that push on the underside of the trackpad and cause all kinds of strange problems. Is your machine's underside deformed at all?

My macbook is completely crazy! (NEED HELP!!!)

I am honestly frustrated and confused! I have a late 2011 macbook pro, (got it in August) 15", 8gb of ram, and an ugraded 750gb HDD. This morning it was working perfectly normal, then I take it to school and at school it was all messed up and now it is messed up as well!
So this is what happens. I boot up the computer, takes a considerable amount of time... then my mac loads normally, and it seems all good. Then when I click something it goes crazy! What I mean by that is, the dock first disappears for about half a second, then reappears. Then it disappears and then the desktop background becomes gray with all the icons on the side (like windows the shortcuts on the actual desktop, not dock) are still there, and it flickers or more flashes then what happens and then what happens after 20 minutes or so the screen goes gray and shows the loading icon and thats it (plus the fan is going like crazy! For a while it wouldn't even start! I tried to boot it up in safe mode but it would go almost half way and then just shut down! Then i did the option + command + P + R and that brought me to disk utlility for a couple of times the verify didn't work, and stopped half way through, and the repair, but I kept on doing it and it said it's all good! So i reboot and same problem! Now I can't go back to that disk utility and when I started my mac again it does the flickery thing, then the gray screen but this time it loads and then it flickers an image of a desktop and goes straight to the screensaver... and I can't do anything about it, it's frozen on the screen saver! The screen saver doens't lag however, it acts normally! But if I click anything it sticks on the screen saver! I think the problem is the HDD, but I don't know! Can anyone help me?! Please!!!!!

My first thought was the hard drive and OS has a built in Sudden Motion Sensor whcih will stop the hard drive heads from crashing into the platters when the computer is moved suddenly. This does work most of the time and could cause some of the tings you are seeing.
But then after reading more of your first post it seems your system and drive is doing some very strange things.
It would be best to first take it into an Apple Genius Bar and have it looked at. They can run tests on it and since it is still in the original 1 year warranty this should not cost you anything even if something needs to be replaced.
You can also run the Apple Hardware Test on it your self by connecting it to the Net by Ethernet cable and booting holding down the d key or the Command+d keys. That will boot the computer from the Apple internet servers and load the AHT.

MacBook Wireless -- Driving me crazy -- Please help!!

I have a MacBook Core 2 Duo with 2 GB RAM.
Lately (past month) I have been having some problems with my wireless connection (which occurs no matter what wireless network I am using). When I turn on the computer the wireless download speed is fine. Then, after I have been using my MacBook for a while, the speed begins to fluctuate. If I am downloading a file, the progress bar moves along at a normal rate for a little bit and then stops and then it continues to move along again at a normal rate and then stops and this continues until the file eventually finishes downloading. This occurs no matter what application I am using (i.e. Safari, Firefox, Download a file from my iMac over the wireless network, iChat, etc.). The progress stops about every 2 seconds.
The only way to “fix” the problem is to either shutdown and restart or to just restart. Then things work fine again for some time. It doesn’t seem to happen when I am doing any particular thing or using particular software.
I contacted Apple Support and they had me make some changes to the network and wireless settings (i.e. create a preferred network for my wireless connection, delete some network wireless Library files, repair permissions) and then when I rebooted the machine, it was, of course, working fine while I was on the phone. However, later in the day the problem reappeared.
I was using Tiger and upgraded to Leopard on the weekend hoping that it would magically fix my wireless problems but it hasn’t. I have installed all of the updates as well.
I am hoping that this sounds familiar to someone and there might be a fix for it. I have been looking online for an answer for quite some time. Rebooting my MacBook all the time is driving me absolutely crazy!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm curious... Will there actually be 10.4.11 now that Leopard 10.5 has been released? I am hoping there will be a 10.411, of course. I got my Macbook the last week of May 2007, installed the 10.4.10 update the day I got the machine, and had problems since.
I called Applecare as soon as I was sure it was my Macbook being flaky, not me doing something wrong. That was the fisrt week of June 2007, and Applecare acted like they never heard of anybody having WiFi disconnect problems on a Macbook. The best suggestion from Applecare was to go back to 10.4.9 - not something that appeals to me, as I'd lose the other fixes in 10.4.10.
The results for Leopard 10.5 are mixed. One thread says it doesn't help, but the users in another thread say it fixes the problem. Either way, I'm not too excited about paying US $129 to upgrade the operating system to fix a machine only a few months old.

Macbook Pro i7 Crazy CPU Spikes

I'm trying to render out of After Effects. Never had a problem before, but now when I render I'm noticing that it renders a bunch of frames really fast and then a stumbles for a bit. Looking at the A.Monitor, CPU usage is spiking to 100 then down to 12 in a regular pattern. I do notice that the underside of the this thing is crazy hot. Could that be the culprit? Any adivce apprecitaed.

That temp sounds fine to me and is about what I get on my Macbook Pro. Watching videos and running a virtual OS environment (Parallels) is not simple stuff (you're running two computers inside the same box at the same time). It takes attention from the processor to make those things happen so it makes sense that you get a bit more heat. The computer is designed to shut itself off completely if the temperature sensors reach a range which is unsafe.

If you ever feel the computer is TOO hot you can have it checked to ensure it is operating within normal parameters:

Macbook Pro literally going crazy

My mac had been working perfectly fine until this past friday.... I went out and came home and it just went crazy.
First thing that is going on:
It's like someone has a mouse and has taken over my computer, if it's not the menu buttons going crazy then it's like someone is constantly tabbing to all the folders on my desktop and when i type it's like someone is holding down the arrow to go back to the beginning.
Second thing that is going on:
I will shut the lid down, but it won't go to sleep, the apple keeps glowing and fading, glowing and fading... the fans keep running and if i leave it for any amount of time like that, it gets extremely hot.
Third thing.... my arrow keeps flickering in and out....
It's just so bizarre... this was a great machine until friday and now it's aggravating the crap out of me.
I've run tests and everything says it's all ok, but it just doesn't make sense.
It's like it has a mind of it's own.
any help would be great.

I think I've seen similar symptoms on a mbp Santa Rosa 2.2 GHZ with the infamous 8600m GT Card. The owner had brought it back to an Apple Store and they had repaired it under the program related to Article TS2377 (MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues).

The track pad on my MacBook Pro is going crazy what can I do?

Yesterday I tried using my Mac book pro when I noticed that my track pad wasn't working it would either move really slow or not at all and then when it does move it goes all crazy and starts moving or clicking things with out me doing anything what can I do two days ago it was working fine and I have tried cleaning the track pad

The same happend to me, you need to call applecare or take it to the genius bar to have the trackpad swapped out. I hope you have applecare becuase the unibody macbooks will need the whole bottom chassis replacing which can be pricey.
Just a quick fix (it will only work for around 30 mins each time) untill you can take it in. Press all four corners of the trackpad down hard (without breaking it) then let go. Your trackpad should work for a short while.

MacBook screen going crazy colours

When I open my MacBook the screen has crazy colours and lines.
It usually stops after a while if I click something or set the computer down on a new surface (maybe the bumping helps something)
It looks a bit like static or TV bars but is all rainbow colours and moves around crazily

Your computer has a partition on the hard drive that contains Apple Hardware Test (AHT).
To start AHT please follow these instructions:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.
It takes a minute or so for AHT to start up and inspect your hardware configuration.
While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen.
When the process is complete, select US language and click the right arrow.
You can also use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
The AHT console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Note: Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.
Some computers support the use of Apple Hardware Test AHT over the Internet.

Crazy woman hit my MacBook Pro!

This is an unbelievable story but true. I was using my brand new 15" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (less than 2 weeks old) at a coffee shop tonight, when this crazy old woman sits down at my table, uninvited by me.
Turns out that she had recognized me from some holiday party years earlier and wanted to say hello. She starts rambling on & on about some complete nonsense, but she was apparently so happy to have someone she could talk to that I decided to politely listen to her for a few minutes.
I closed the lid of my MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro went to sleep.
So I'm listening to her story & I made a funny comment. Apparently, I totally cracked her up b/c she starts laughing uncontrollably & then, in her fit of laughter, she SMACKS HER OPEN HAND DOWN ON MY CLOSED MACBOOK PRO AT FULL STRENGTH! It made the loudest *SMACK* noise that you have ever heard. This insane woman hit my MacBook Pro at full strength!
I was absolutely horrified. It was like it was happening in slow motion. I said, "Don't ever do that ever again. This is a $3,000 machine." And instead of apologizing, she says, "Oh, these things are tough. I once burned a laptop with a candle and it kept working." Then this insane-asylum candidate TRIED TO PICK UP MY MACBOOK PRO to show me where she had burned this other laptop. I grabbed my laptop from her and put it in my laptop bag.
Now, of course, I'm concerned that she may have done damage to my MacBook Pro. Is this the type of force that Apple accounts for when creating these laptops? This is absolutely unbelievable -- I have never, in all my years of owning Apple laptops, ever applied that sort of force to one of these machines. I would never even dream of it. I treat my laptops with the utmost of care. I mean, it would have been bad enough if this machine was turned off, but this machine wasn't even shut down -- it was in sleep mode!
As you can imagine, ever since she did that, I have been painfully aware of sounds coming from my MacBook Pro. For example, I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but the left fan seems to be quietly running at all times. I never noticed this before. Is there anything else I should be concerned about? Could she have possibly partially-unseated something inside my machine (like a RAM chip or the Airport card)... or could she have caused some possible damage to the screen?
Can someone help me understand how much I should be concerned about this horrifying incident?

I hope your machine is OK. I totally understand you, you are now more sensitive to any kind of noises. You can try running hardware test, it can give you some ideas.
Have you got her contact details? If there is some hardware failure, she has to pay all of it!!!
But, these computers are quite solid, and most probably there is no damage at all; I hope that is the case for you...
