MacBook + D-Link DI-714P+ = no internet?

OK, so. The deal is, I have a D-Link wireless router (DI-714P+, to be exact) here at home (ISP=Comcast). Nine months out of the year, I don't have to connect to it because I'm at school (and my family uses the router here), and I've yet to see a wireless router with 1100 miles range. I know the DI-714P+ has been discontinued, but until it dies, I have no option but to work with it.
Anyway. I have a MacBook myself, and the other two comps on the network run WinXP Home. When I try to connect to the router on my MacBook, my computer will register the existence of the network (I'm just going to call the SSID "example" here, though it isn't really that). It will say it's connected to example, but the router doesn't acknowledge my computer's existence. I can't even access the router's IP through my MacBook; if I try, it tells me that I'm not connected to the Internet. I've run through all the troubleshooting suggestions I've been able to find on my Mac's help files, as well as the router's, to no avail. I've changed the SSID in case there was a duplicate (it used to be something common enough that there just might have been interference). The network itself is unsecured because I haven't been able to convince the person in charge while I'm gone that security is important.
I can connect to the Internet through the router if I connect the MacBook to it. Both other computers (a desktop and a laptop, both running WinXP Pro) connect wirelessly just fine.
I've disabled the McAfee SecurityCenter firewall (as provided by Comcast) in hopes that that would help. No dice.
I've found another discussion(here) regarding this exact problem, and no answers.
When I go into Terminal and input "ifconfig en1", I get
en1:flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet6 fe80::217:f2ff:fe49:ebc0%en1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5
inet 192.168.0.175 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
ether 00:17:f2:49:eb:c0
media: autoselect status: active
supported media: autoselect
Pinging the router itself yields 100% packet loss, and the error "ping: sendto: Host is down" with the occasional "ping: sendto: No route to host" interspersed until I cancel the operation.
Does anybody know if there's something I haven't tried?

On the 17", try making a while new Location for the network, checking for accuracy each step.
If cabled access is OK, but Wireless access is not OK, then it's the Built-In Airport Location settings that you should check (using encryption? are the keys being entered properly?)
Good Luck

  • My MacBook isn't connecting to the Internet. When I try to connect, it shows the signal strength in the top right corner as if it was connected, but the Internet doesn't work. When I go to my network preferences, it says the ip is self-assigned.

My MacBook won't connect to the Internet, but it's connected to my router. When I go to network preferences, it says that it has a self assigned ip address, and can't connect to the Internet. How can I fix this? Please help!

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • Macbook connected to network but no internet

    Hello,
I am having a very strange and concerning internet issue with the Macbook in my household. It can't access the internet even when connected to a wireless network. I know this is not a network issue because a Macbook pro, iphone, and ipod touch all connect to my network at home and can access the internet just fine. Also, the Macbook was unable to access the internet when connected to the school network while my iphone and other computers could.
The problem started suddenly last Monday. Prior to that the internet had been working both at home and at school. It appears to be connect to the network because there are full airport bars and a check mark next to the network (in both locations) but it can't find the airport in the Airport Utility (while at home since the school doesn't use airport). Additionally, it wouldn't connect to the internet directly through the ethernet port either when I plugged it directly into the cable modem.
In the System preferences it has a Self Assigned IP. The preferences are the same as they were when it was working and nothing looks wrong. On Thursday I tried the fix someone posted on this forum of deleting the network from the preferred networks and then adding it again and it worked at home for a day but it still wouldn't work at school and yesterday it stopped working again at home. When I tried to the fix again it didn't work. Also, I've tried repairing permissions twice and that hasn't done any good either. Additionally, it happens under both users on the computer and the test user I created.
    Any help would be appreciated.

But today, 30 May, having spent over a MONTH since my team reached the offices of the service STILL NOT READY TO HAVE MY NOTEBOOK despite repeated calls by phone to request as soon as possible under the same (and taking all paid for and that they could not order the parts without prior cancellation). just hide behind cheap explanations as' the replacement has already been requested, has not yet reached. Have a MacBook. Shows I have an internet connection, but cannot get on. I do have connection with my other computer???

I've looked at the IP adress, and it started with 169.
This means you aren't actually connected to the Internet; only to your router.
An easy first attempt at a fix is to turn your router off and then on again.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?

  • My macbook pro kicks me off the internet to the home screen randomly, how do i fix this?

While I am on the internet mostly, my macbook will kick me off the internet to the homescreen. While I am watching a movie or surfing the web without a pattern it will move to the homescreen while the movie still plays for example.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Hi All, My MacBook will not connect to the internet at my apartment.

Hi All, My MacBook will not connect to the internet at my apartment. I live with 5 other people and it works for all of them. It worked for me until about 3 weeks ago. My internet works fine at other places like cafes or other folks' homes.  I've tried many things but am having no luck at all. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them!  Thanks!

Some routers (such as my Netgear) seem to work better if you input your device's MAC address manually while on their online site. That site address should be in the manual and usually starts with something like 192.168.x.x Once on that site, input your Mac's address - a series of numbers and letters i.e. 2f.3c.45.2a.xx.xx (go to Network Preference Pane, select Airport, click on Options: at the bottom it shows "airport ID". I have all my devices listed; with that you can create a special IP address i.e.192.168.1.1, .2, .3, and so on. I've never lost connection using that method.

  • Can I create a wi-fi network on my macbook and still connect to the internet via an actual wifi point?

    Hi,
I got TrakProDJ from the app store and installed it.
It allows me to control a DJing software with my iPad by setting up a network via Wifi Symbol in Toolbar>Create Network...
The problem with this is the network I create isn't based in the internet--it's just a wifi link between my laptop and iPad.
I'm sure I'll get asked to play songs I'll have to look up on youtube, so how is it possible that I can maintain my wifi network connection on my macbook and create an access point for my iPad to use to communicate with my laptop (to control the DJing software)?
I'll really appreciate any help I can get!
    Thank you!

You cannot use both an ad-hoc network and a normal ap based one with any wireless device.  Your only solution is to use a wired Internet connection to do so on the laptop, that way you use that for Internet access and your wifi for the ad-hoc network the app requires.  You might want to contact the developer of that app and find out why they limit the setup to just an ad-hoc wifi setup.  Seems that if all it requires is just a network connection to the laptop, they could simply use any existing network connection as long as both devices can see each other on it.  Either that or also give the user the option to use Bluetooth for it if they have the higher version of hardware to support the necessary data exchange.
