MacBook DAME virus. Infected kcn-dump.bin? How do I fix it?

I opened my macbook and Sophos Free Mac Edition came up with a threat called DAME.  It said that the kcn-dump.bin was infected.  What do I do?  It is somewhere in the /private folder.  There is no option to clean it up, it says it must be cleaned up manually.  However, I restarted my computer, and the threat is no longer coming up.  What is this?  Has it moved to somwehere else?  How could I have gotten this?  How do I clean it?
this is the exact path its in: /private/var/db/kcm-dump.bin
Thank you.

Furthermore, when I clicked the description it brings me to the sophos website where it describes what the virus is and it says it is windows only.
Correct, it's not uncommon for a Mac to be able to transfer a Windows based virus, so it can appear on the machine (but not affect it, but it can be passed to another Windows machine on the files),  only in the present User account.
However the pathname you describe is a root level based with the highest degree of security and very highly unlikely a Windows based malware would appear there or that you would be using root user as it's disabled by default.
The strenght of Unix's security comes from the various permission levels employed, combined with the fact that the malware in question is Windows based, not OS X or Unix based, so it won't even run on a Mac to begin with.
So since we know there isn't any Mac based viruses, this one being a Windows based one, it's more likely a "false positive" since it didn't appear the second time a scan was issued. Confirmation with ClamXav (runs only when you need it, not always on) should clear it up as a false positive.

It is possible you have installed a trojan, software from quesitonable sources, that you gave your admin password too and thus could have infected the root user, but the malware is Windows based (actually it's a
a polymorphic encryption engine which is used as part of the viruses

However if you didn't install anything from questionable sources, then more likely than not it's a false positive.
I wouldn't worry about it unless you started noticing more issues.

I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro and the Finder keeps quitting - how do i fix it?
Worse, i can't force quit the finder and get it to relaunch - the command won't work.
Most of the Lion software also won't work - iTunes, Mail, iCal - and only some of the preferences work.
    The message:
    Finder quit unexpectedly.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
Won't go away no matter if i hit Ignore or Report...
I have no clue what to do...
    Any help?

Does that happen if you boot into "safe mode"?  Launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the problem.  If you see a "crash report", post its contents here.

  • I have tried to download the updated itunes and i keep getting the itunes contained a virus and was deleted. How do I fix this?

I keep getting the saying itunes64Setup contained a virus and was deleted does anyone know how to possible fix this?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • Websites read my macbook pro as a mobile device. How do I fix this?

This has been going on for as long as I've had my Macbook Pro (May 2011)--AND since before I recently updated my operating system to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. It's getting really annoying. It used to be that just the MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas read my laptop as a mobile device, but now other websites are starting to do so as well. How do I make these websites understand that I'm using a laptop and want to view their full websites, not the mobile version?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • HT1414 iPad 2: Virus? Broken Screen? How do I fix this?

My iPad 2, whose 1 year warranty is expired, was working fine (great, actually) up until a week ago. Suddenly, upon turning it on it only showed/shows black, white, & gray stripes, smoothly flowing until halfway across the screen then replacing themselves. The first time we plugged it into our main computer it was ready to restore, but we contemplated the desicion of erasing all the data, finally deciding it was our only option, but when we plugged it in again, it won't restore on iTunes because, obviously, I can't type my passcode in. What should I do? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

That is definitely not a virus. It looks to me like a hardware issue. I'd make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store and take it in for them to look at. If you don't have an Apple Store near you, contact Apple Support.

  • My Macbook doesn't recognize cd's. How can I fix this? HELP

Whenever I try to load/import/listen to a disk, my Macbook spins it around and spits it back out. Now, in System preferences, under CD's & DVD's, I can no longer choose iTunes under "When you insert a music cd." It immediately switches to the "Ignore" choice, even though I don't click on it. I just updated iTunes and it didn't do better or worse. Dvd's work completely fine, but cd's are a struggle to do anything. Is is my computer, or the software? PLEASE HELP. NEW MUSIC FOR CHRISTMAS AND I CAN'T LISTEN TO IT.

@mbrubeck: Strange I replied to your answer just 30 minutes after your post but magicaly it is disappeared. Here is my answer again:
I only tried firefox and the preinstalled browser on my phone none of them supports kurdish. Also no other program supports kurdish. Is it something that only firefox ore google have to fix or can i fix it myself. I have a little bit experience programming in java and c and also have programmed for Android, but never done anything about fonts and language packages.

  • HT1338 why is my macbook freezing when i use youtube and how can i fix it

Everytime I use anything besides Facebook on the internet my screen goes black and the noise skips or repeats itself and I have to press the power button and reboot. It happens probably 20 times a day and I took it to a genius appointment and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Do I need to update my software or is it a virus or internal problem? I have no clue what to do at this point, I am really clueless and it is frustrating that I paid $2,500, have had this only since spring of 2010, and it will not work properly. Thanks for anyone who has any input or advice!

There is a little free tool that makes it easy to find the cursor:
    It is called Mouse Locator,
it sits in System preferences after install, try it and look at the interesting settings.
Works in SL, Lion and ML.
If you do not like it throw it out again.

You can run the Apple Hardware Test to rule out any hardware issues.
    Using Apple Hardware Test
Not likley to be the battery that's causing this.
