Macbook default font replaced by symbols

I dropped my 5 year old macbook pro recently, and immediately afterwards, all the default fonts on the menus, titles, etc. were changed to a 'block A' symbol. Whenever I right click, because my macbook wants to display the symbols instead of actual words, a blank menu shows up. However, the fonts are working regularly in whatever app I open up.
It's very odd, and I've already tried various fixes but none of them worked or followed through:
Basic restart
Resetting PRAM
Hardware Diagnostic (doesn't finish, just freezes halfway)
Safe Mode/clearing caches

Thanks, Bee! But I just figured out that this problem is caused by disabling Georgia.
There are several fonts that most likely I will never use (e.g. fonts for other languages, symbols), so I went ahead and disabled them in FontBook when I got my computer. It just occurred to me, after starting this thread, to go back to FontBook to enable all fonts and go in batches to try to pinpoint the font causing the problem. And so I found it! I figured that since I'm using FontExplorer Pro now I can manage them directly from it and not thru FontBook anymore.
It was a painful task but it was worth doing it, knowing that many people can learn from my mistake.
Thanks for the hand once again!

  • Replace missing fonts with default fonts

I used fonts in my document that were not downloaded to my computer.  I would like to replace these fonts with the default fonts that the computer automatically substituted.  Is there any way to find out what fonts were used to make these substitutions?

I realize this is an old post, but maybe it will still help.
Was looking for the same functionality in Photoshop as in InDesign, where upon selecting "Replace all Missing Fonts", there would be a dialog box allowing me to choose the fonts to replace to. Instead, it just arbitrarily selects "Myriad Pro", regardless.
My solve, as clunky as it is, worked OK if your whole document uses the same font for everything. E.g. a font across multiple slides of a presentation.
Using the newer filtering options in the Layer menu, select the "Filter for Type layers".
Select all the type layers with the yellow triangle warning.
Go to your Type menu and select the font you want to replace to.
You will be prompted for each layer to confirm the change, get ready to hit "OK" a lot of times.
Click on the "Filter for Type Layers" option again to restore your full menu list.
Should take care of the issue.
With that said, this is a feature request that is well overdue!

  • Can i enlarge the default font on my macbook air 11"

I have a new 11" macbook air.  Can i enlarge the default font?  looks like i can for individual applications, but shouldn't I be able to change in the display settings?  can't figure it out.  thanks

    to do this for pages:
    Open a New document
Select some text in the document
Change the font and color to what you want
Go to View: Show Styles Drawer
Click on the red arrow next to “Body” and & select “Redefine Style from Selection”
Delete all the text that you typed. Otherwise that text appears every time you open a new document.
Go to File: “Save As Template…” and Save the document as a name that is clear e.g. “100 black”
    Go to Pages: Preferences
Under the General tab click the “Use template” for new Documents.
Select ‘”Templates” and select the template you just saved.

  • CS6 Find Font Replace All replaces all the text in that font with a space.

Anybody else have this happen? It's happened to me more than once, so I don't think it's a fluke. The first time around I never noticed it until it was way too late to use UNDO. Disconcerting to say the least. It takes out all the words in that font and inserts a space.

  • All text in browser replaced by symbols with hex numbers

Last week I detected and removed a trojan (ukash) which my pc contracted while visiting some dodgy site with Firefox. Even though the trojan has been removed completely, I cannot reinstall any version of Firefox (english or other languages), as '''all ''' text is replaced by box-like symbols with hex numbers.
For example, the import wizard dialog box looks like this:
    http://i43.tinypic.com/2qwlkhx.jpg
I suspect somehow the default font has been changed to one not supported by Windows, but even with a complete uninstall and removal of all personal settings, the symbols reappear. Is there any way to change the default font? Please remember I cannot change anything within the program, as all text is scrambled in this way, even text I enter in the address bar, so about:config is not accessible.

It sounds like your computer may still be infected with some sort of a virus / Malware.
    I suggest the following resources:
To double check your system is clean, do the following (Not official Mozilla advice, just good practice from personal experience)
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. [http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.malwarebytes.org/]
Download and Run TDSSKiller [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363]
Download and Install Microsoft Security Essentials [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials] (not an official endorsement, but I personally recommend MSE as an awesome permanent anti-virus)
Double check for all Windows Updates.
If you are still having problems with Malware after that, I would recommend either [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/ http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/], or having your computer cleaned by a professional.

  • How do you change the default font in indesign cs3 on a mac?

Hi, I have tried closing all indesign docs and then changing the font in the font menu to helvetica (from times), then opening a new document and it still gives me [Times (TT)] when i draw a new text box and write something in it.
I have tried quitting indesign and reopening it and its still the old default font of [Times (TT)] - which is also not an available font on my machine.
I have also changed my basic paragraph style to helvetica from times, and it still doesnt change the default font when i open a new document.
When i open a new document in indesign it comes up with helvetica in the character pallet as the font, its just when i go to draw a text box and write something in it that it writes it in Times.

Is it possible you have more than one text frame object style, or that you have some default paragraph style set other than [Basic Paragraph]? If you are only editing Basic Paragraph and your default text frame is set to another syle, or you have another paragraph style selected when you begin typing, you might see this behavior.
If not, try resetting your preferences. Replacing InDesign Preferences

There are some programs like http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/09/windows8/change-the-default-font-in-windows-8-windows-8-font-changer.html in internet. But how i see it's don't change all fonts.
How to cahnge all fon'ts in windows 8.1 to Tahoma 8 for example?

This is supposed to be a better program than Win 8.
Did someone from Microsoft Marketing tell you that?  Maybe a fanboy?  :)
In all seriousness it's not better in any obvious way than Win 8, nor is it really any better than Win 7.  It can be tweaked to be just about as good.  And to be fair, it's stable.
I mean yes, we all expected Win 8.1 to be better than its predecessors
    - software releases are supposed to give you some value, some good reason to upgrade - but that kind of goes away when the software maker feels they have a captive audience as Microsoft does, and especially when they still have plenty of businesses
buying Win 7, which pays their bills.
But like it or not, removed choices or not, apparently Windows 8 is here to stay.  Joshua up above says "You fail", but have they really?  Once you're patching it up to make it usable they've already got your license fee, and your
alternatives to running Windows are what, exactly?

  • Glitches in address fill-ins with nicknames; default font problem; plus other glitches in Thunderbird 31.3.0 and 31.4.0; can I roll back to an earlier version?

I am unhappy with the recent upgrade to Thunderbird 31.3.0 and now 31.4.0. My bottom line question is whether I can roll back to the previous version, which was working well for me.
The problems I have encountered include:
    1. I used to be able to enter a single letter in many cases in the address field, and the autocomplete would fill in the entry that I always use with that single letter. That function has been lost, as has auto fill-in based on the nicknames I have entered in my Address Book. I see there is another thread on this problem (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1036962), but no satisfactory answer so far. Entering a single letter now pulls up completely unrelated address entries that may not even have that letter as part of the name, address or nickname for that unrelated address. I have created new nicknames to try to adapt to this problem, but even these new nicknames no longer work with the 31.4.0 upgrade yesterday, forcing me to create yet more complex and hard-to-remember nicknames to pull up my frequent addressees. This is all very frustrating to me, as I depend on speed and ease when creating messages.
    2. Also, I used to be able to enter a single letter in the address field and then use the mouse to click on the "To:" symbol to the left of the next address line to change the next entry to "Cc:"; doing so would then cause the complete address to fill in in the "To:" address field, and make the next field ready for an entry. That no longer works. If I use that technique, the shortcut that I entered in the first field gets included along with the address (if I'm lucky enough to have the address itself selected now, given the problems I've mentioned above). I now have to press "Enter" in order to get the address in the first field to "take" correctly, and then have to click on the "To:" symbol for the next line as a separate action. Just another inconvenience with the new version.
    3. While still on the subject of addresses, personally I see no reason why the address and subject fields should now be colored blue by default rather than appearing as blank, white fields. I far prefer the old look. And I suspect that changing from the blue color to a nice, clean, white field takes time and computer resources that slow things down.
    4. The default font (Times in my case) no longer "takes" when replying to or forwarding messages. I've checked Tools/Options/Composition, and Times is still shown as my default font. However, when I start to type (in a reply with the original message quoted or in a forwarded message), the result is "Variable Width". In order to get Times, I need to highlight the block of text after typing, including the lead-in to the quoted message or the header of the forwarded message, and select "Times" when "(mixed)" shows up. This is a big pain; I often forget to do so and end up having to edit the Unsent Message (which I check before sending) as New and correct the font.
    5. A minor problem: I rely on the reminder to attach a message which shows up when an "attachment-related" word is entered in the body of the message. It has been a wonderful feature of Thunderbird that has prevented me on many occasions from sending off messages without the attachments. However, in the new versions, even if I have indeed added the attachment, a pop-up comes up on sending the message saying there has been no attachment and asking if I want to add one. It's easy enough to just click "No", but it's yet one more unnecessary and distracting step that this new version is requiring of the user.
I'm really sad to see these various changes/glitches. I love Thunderbird and it bothers me deeply to find myself mired in so many new problems that slow down my work. I would be grateful for any suggestions and advice, and, particularly, for any information as whether I can roll back to the version prior to 31.3.0 that was working well for me.

Thank you, Zenos. I tried rolling back to v31.2.0, since I had not encountered problems prior to December. However, that didn't help. So I followed your valuable suggestion to revert to v24.6; that seems to have done the trick.
I would like to mark this problem as "Solved" -- the rollback seems to have worked. However, since my original post was a complex mix of things, before I do that, should I post the individual problem sets that I had noted (address fields/nicknames problems -- numbers 1-3; default font problem -- number 4; attachment reminder problem -- number 5) as separate issues which have not been solved?
Do you know if these various issues are being worked on? I'm glad to have the temporary fix of rolling back to an earlier version, but I'd like to get back on the current update schedule at some point if and when these problems have been corrected.
    Thank you again!

  • Unwanted font replacement (only in Safari)

Using Dreamweaver, I've created a website with default font "Gil Sans Light".
When displaying the result in Safari, the font is replaced by Helvetica or Arial (from the looks of it).
In de Dreamweaver editor, the font displays as Gil Sans Light. In Micros~1 IE and Firefox the correct font is displayed correctly.
    What is happening in Safari?
    Coen

Since it is Safari specific, I'm presuming it is a
app font cache problem. I have zapped all font caches
with Font Finagler to no effect.
You might also look at your Helvetica fonts in FontBook. If there is a dot next to them, you have duplicates, and this might also be the cause, although usually FontFinagler tends to solve it.

  • How to change default font in Numbers?

Is it possible to somehow change the default font when creating new documents in Numbers from "Helvetica Neue" to just "Helvetica", size 11? Changing the font and saving the document as new template simply does not work since the font in newly created tables in the new document using the new template still falls back to "Helvetica Neue".

    Here is an enhanced version.

  • Is there a way to assign the default font for font substitution?

I use PsCS3 at home and work. I took some work home today, and SHOCK, I didn't have any of the same fonts I have on my Mac at work. Right now, I'm laboriously changing all my type layers one by one to a suitable replacement font on my PC. There's got to be a better way - more suitable to a lazy sod like me, right?
The perfect solution would be to assign the font I want to use for the default substitution font (which is Myrid Pro). I've searched everywhere, but have come up with nada. Is there a way to change this default font to one of my selection?
Any tips to help out will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can change all the type layers at on by selecting them all (Ctrl+click on each or Shift+click a range) then make the change.

  • Reinstalling Default Fonts in Mountain Lion

    Hi,
After buying the new iMac and have used it for two day I noticed that some files were in the Trash folder including the Fonts folder (don't ask me how they got there becuase I would swear I didn't move them). Since I didn't know where the Fonts folder belones to (system or user folder) I search on the internet and some people sugested doing a restore using Font Book (File>Restore Standard Fonts), but this made it worse since when it when and check it deletes the existing folders so now I only have the folder that was in the trash and I'm for sure missing one folder.
Is there a way to reinstall the default fonts in Mountain Lion without reinstalling the operating system?
This is the only thing I found but this will reinstall the OS.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4201528?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks a lot

You can use FontBook to find and delete duplicates.
Have you checked for updates for your iWork?
I did use FontBook to delete the duplicates.
The applications were working fine before the reinstall, I checked for updates but it doesn’t show any for these applications.
My problem with this is that I cannot reinstall these applications since I have them in a DVD and my computer doesn’t have a DVD drive.  I installed them sharing the DVD drive from my old MacBook but I sold it two days ago, the only thing I have is an Acer laptop but I don’t know if it is possible to share the drive.
Is there a way to somehow put my DVDs in a USB drive, so I can install them without needing a DVD drive (assuming I can barrow my nephews Mac which has a DVD drive)?
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Change default font size

    Hi there!
I have a problem with my macbook pro MC700. I got 23' monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to it, but system fonts are too small and it's hard to read em, how can I change font size? In windows7 even default fonts are bigger and there is an option to control em making even bigger for easy read and so on, where these settings in mac os x 10.6.8?

For things like filenames, you can adjust that in the View Options screen for the Desktop or any active folder. You can access View Options via the View menu, or by pressing Command-J
There is no setting to adjust the size of the font used in the menubar.
Some programs allow you to adjust default font settings - check in the Preferences for each program for that setting.

    Hi Niels,
There is some sort of entity settings file that Frame opens (in the background) during XML import that is actually a binary FM file and contains fonts like this. On FM11 on my machine it is here:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure\entfmts
When FM attempts to read it during an import, you'll get these font errors if your machine doesn't have them. The solution is to make a backup of the file, then go into the original and just replace those fonts with something else. I'm not really clear on what this file is for but replacing fonts in it have never had any consequence for me. But like I said, make a backup
See if that fixes the problem.
