Macbook detects monitor, but nothing is displayed

Hello everyone,
I just recently bought a mini-dvi to dvi cable so i can use my 24 inch westinghouse monitor as an external monitor.
The macbook detects the monitor but nothing shows up on monitor, i've tried putting my macbook to sleep and changing the resolution settings but i've had no luck.
does anyone have any advice? The adapter is brand new from my school's computer store, so I'm sure that isn't the problem.
Any help would be great!
Cheers
Jason

I have this same problem with my MacBook and a Hanns-G 17" widescreen monitor I just purchased. (I had a previous Acer 20.1" widescreen monitor that I actually returned because I couldn't get it to work and figured it was a problem with the monitor; months later, I'm trying this other one and coming across the same issues.)
It is detected, but nothing is displayed, which sounds pretty much like the same problem. I suppose it could be my adapter (which I'll test as soon as I find someone else who has a mini-DVI out port), but I'm afraid it might be my MacBook, which would be unfortunate considering I'm out of my 90 days of phone service and I live literally hours away from the nearest Apple Store, and not very much closer to an authorized repair center.
Oh, also: I'm using OS X 10.4.11, not Leopard (yet...), if it makes a difference.
If anyone has any more ideas, I also would love to hear them. Thanks!

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

Actually I would like to have the Ipad connected to pc and then run an application on the ipad (which is shown on my windows machine) and record it on the windows machine... Is this feasible?

If you have an HDMI connection on your computer, it is most likely an output, it won't recieve a signal unless it's on a video capture card. Recording to the PC could be a difficlut task. HDMI is encrypted to keep you from copying but there are ways to do it. It would also depend on what content you intended on recording. If it's movies you have purchased or rented, it would be illegal.

This what I have been trying......  Maybe my eyes are screwed up or don't understand the process....
What I have been trying to do is squint and make the apple disappear by moving the sliders around in each step. Is that correct?

  • Macbook turns on, but nothing on the screen

I had my macbook pro last september for my birthday, and until last night it had been working properly. but just tonight it won't start up! when i held the power button, the screen stays black although there is this normal sound when mbp's starting. I blind my way and click randomly (hoping to choose the username like i used to) and then the screen's all white-and-gray thing. Any idea why, and how, to fix this? also how much would it cost? thanks

nothing, my mouse just stops at the edge of my screen. but i have it mirrored. when i turn mirror off then my mouse goes of the screen but nothing happens on the display. i am going to take it in to the store tonight and see if they can send it back and fix it.
    thanks

  • MAS indicates two updates but nothing is displayed

I haven't seen this previously. I've restarted, signed in multiple times to the App Store, but nothing shows up. Yet the icon indicates that there are two updates available:

    The screen shot isn't showing.
But these kinds of issues seem to happen from time to time.  They will eventually show up and let you install them.

  • Macbook sees projector but nothing displayed

My macbook 2.0GHz automatically detects the sanyo projector, but the projector shows nothing and after awhile goes to sleep because of no signal. They're connected using Mini-DVI to VGA adater. My older Powerbook G4 works fine. I've tried changing the resolutions in display preferences, tried mirroring, tried restarting with projector connected. Any solutions?

Is the cable run between the Mac and the projector inordinately long, or is a standard length, 1.8 meter VGA cable being used?

  • Macbook Pro 13' (2010) MDp to HDMI detects monitor but no image

I bought a Mini Display Port to HDMI to hook it up to one of my Dell 2408WFP monitors. The Mac detects the display just fine and my USB ports on my monitor work because I'm using a external mouse and keyboard. However there is no image on screen. I just bought my first Mac a couple days ago for college I need this to work. I have went though a lot of the settings I think.

I recently tried the same thing and had no luck getting audio without a separate cable.
I now have a problem.  After using the headphone jack to my tv for several hours, I now have no audio to my macbook internal speakers.
System Preferences>Sound>Output tab shows only 1 device for sound output; Digital Out.  And in the Settings for Selected Device it reads: "The selected device has no output controls"
The volume icon on the menu bar is gray-doesn't work.
    Any advice here?

  • PB detects projector but not 20" Display

I'm having a strange problem when connecting my 15" PowerBook G4 Ti DVI to a new 20" Apple Cinema Display (ACD). When I first got the display, I was able to connect just fine for about 8 weeks. I went on a trip and since my return, the PB won't detect the display.
I took the PB to a Mac store and tried connecting to another 20" ACD... no luck. This lead me to believe that the PB display adapter was shot. However, I just tried to connect a Benq digital projector via VGA and the PB detects the projector without issue and works in both dual display and mirroring modes.
So far I have reset the PRAM, the NVRAM, and the PMU, but it didn't help.
I've also repaired permissions and repaired the disk (no errors found). Again, no luck.
Finally, I tried closing the lid on the PB and clicking the external mouse to see if I could force the PB to display to the external 20" ACD. The technique worked for the Benq projector, but failed for the ACD.
At this point, I'm not even sure how else to troubleshoot this issue, let alone fix it.
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Could it be a corrupted driver? Is there any way to reload Apple display drivers without having to do a fresh OS install?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
15" PowerBook G4 Ti DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   20" Apple Cinema Display

Hi, Wesley. Is it possible that your monitor's DVI cable has been damaged? You've verified that your DVI port is good, and also that your DVI->VGA adapter (and of course the projector's VGA cable) are good. If the DVI cable is detachable from the monitor, I'd try a different one and see whether the results are better.
I took the PB to a Mac store and tried connecting to another 20" ACD... no luck. This lead me to believe that the PB display adapter was shot.
When you tested with the display in the store, were you using your own display cable or the store's? Why did that test, which failed, suggest to you that your display adapter was bad? It wasn't in use when you connected a DVI display to a DVI Powerbook, was it? What did the store staff say when your Powerbook failed to detect their display?
You do have a warranty and free phone support for the display; I think I'd go ahead and contact AppleCare about the problem and see whether someone there can help you. I see you've also posted in the Displays forum here; that was a good idea too.

  • Dark screen on startup( screen is lit but nothing is displayed)

I was working on a paper on my computer( a year and half old) when it abruptly shutdown without any error screen(BSOD). I turned it on after and the screen was lit with all lights on and blinking( wifi, hdd, cd). The wifi light was on but it wasn't white- indicative it hadn't boot into an OS yet( I am running dual OS- Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8-primary). I was lucky for the screen to turn on to normal as I kept turning the power on and off repeatedly. I decided to boot into Ubuntu thinking the problem was from a driver issue on Windows. It was working normally about an hour and then I noticed a bizzare discoloration of the screen, a rapid blinking of the screen and finally the screen freezing entirely- I could move the mouse after this. At this point, (I was suspecting a graphics card defect not driver), so I turned off the computer and tried to turn it back on. The screen persistently stayed lit(Hp logo on the back was lit too) but with no visual display. I then connected the laptop to a secondary monitor using both HDMI and a VGA cable. The TV displayed no visuals from the computer in both instances. Lastly, the screen randomly turned on in my process of repeatedly powering off and powering on, but it appeared completely disclored and distorted. It was always in very low brightness. I continued to boot into windows 8 but just before the login screen I got a blue screen of death. The screen hasn't displayed visuals since( always stays lit at startup). I've never dropped this laptop before so I hope you guys could be of help because my warrantly recently expired.

    Hi @Yussif_Hamis ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP ENVY 17t-3000 CTO Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. This could be a graphic drivers issues as you can not see it on a Monitor.
You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the issue.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Computer was dropped - screen changes colors but nothing is displayed

Where do I start? I see no noticeable damage to the screen - no cracks etc. It fell to a carpeted floor. Can anyone suggest a path to determine if the screen is dead versus something else?
    Regards
    Bob

    HKBob,
try not to laugh - how do I send you an email?
Click on the "spudnuty" at the top left of this post.
I have ordered the cable - should only take a couple days.
It could be that the cable is just disconnected not broken.
some sort of a shim fix - are you aware of this?
That's a failure of the BGA (the way the GPU (graphics chip) attaches to the logic board). Your failure doesn't sound like that. It is possible that the chip itself has failed.
    However these posts:
the display is brilliant and alternates colors that fill the screen.
I have gotten it to display some printing (so quick I cannot read it).
make me feel that the LVDS cable is unplugged, damaged.

What level of iTunes do you have? iTunes 9.1 or later is required (9.1.1 is the latest).
