Macbook disaster ; I have dropped my macbook from 2 feet on hardwood floor

Last night I my macbook laptop was sitting on my couch next to me. The machine was on and running and I think was possibly writing data to the hard drive as a podcast was downloading. I stood up and the laptop went crashing to the ground. I saw the laptop on the ground don it's left side (port side). Before I could say anything my roommate picked up the laptop and put it back on the couch (I would have tried to turn off without moving).
At that point I moved the cursor and the machine was responsive. I then attempted to close programs, the machine was somewhat responsive however was taking time todo so. I then hit the power button and clicked shutdown. The machine was not responsive. So I held the power button down and force shut down.
I then visually inspected the machine and noted there was no visible damage. After giving it sometime I booted the machine back up. The folder icon with the question mark appeared indicating that the system folder could not be found.
My machine has a 200gig hard drive which I have installed. I had some trouble when installing this drive and as such theorized the drive could have come unseated. The impact hit the port side of the machine so I would believe if anything the drive would have gotten pushed further into place but I guess anything is possible.
To confirm my suspicions and look for the drive in disc utility I attempted to boot off my factory cd. This is when it gets really scary. The screen stayed grew and the machine was not able to boot of my disc.
I am unsure what the best approach is at this point. The machine is still under apple care but I am not sure how the swapping of the drives impacts my coverage not to mention the fact that I may have played a role in the machine being dropped.
When I get home today I am planning on trying to boot off the cd again and then probably opening the machine up and seeing if the drive has come unseated. Any additional guidance anyone could provide would be appreciated, thanks for your time in advance.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

That said, my advice would be to take it to an Apple
Store, especially if it's still not working. There's
a lot we can recommend if the computer has a glitch
that can be solved by repairing permissions or
something like that. But not much we can recommend if
actual parts have been damaged. And the only way to
know if any part has suffered real damage is to take
it in and have the computer opened up and checked
over.
Yes I am aware that once hardware is broken it is pretty much broken. With regarding to the repairing of permissions, it is my understanding that the machine would boot up off the disc if all that needed to be done was permissions repair.
Further my past experiences with the "Mac Geniuses" has left my pocket empty and my computers non-operable. Not to mention my concerns with regard to Apple's history of lack of security diligence when dealing with personal information on machines they take into custody.
At this time I will continue to pursue other avenues. If anyone has any suggestions besides taking my macbook to a retail store, they will be greatly appreciated.

  • I dropped my ipod from 2 feet off the ground and it shattered. Is it defective?

Ok, there have been several problems with my ipod. In order:
    1) It's always been a little slower than my old one of the same generation.
    2) It slipped out of my hand onto my friend's driveway and cracked. (yeah I accept blame for that one)
    3) It slipped off my leg as I was sitting on a very small chair and onto the linoleum floor about 1.5-2 feet off the ground with a brand new rubber case on it, and shattered more than it did when I dropped it onto the driveway, also creating some grey spots on it along with the cracks.
    4) I had a new, even better, case on it when somebody bumped me and I dropped it from about 4 feet or less off the ground, and it landed first on my toe (which hurt really badly), then face down on the floor. I picked it up, and the screen was white with only a shadow of my wallpaper at all visible on one side of it.
I would just go to the nearest apple store and try to swap it out since I got it less than a year ago, and I'm pretty sure it's defective, but unfortunately, I bought it from an individual, and I have no clue when he bought it originally. Does anybody know what I can do?
    Thanks.

Hey Speckled dino, the Griffin Survivor case is that type of case, hard shell with rubber bumpers touching the iPod and bumpers on the outside that stand proud of the case, improves shock protection and puts a little air space between the glass and the ground. Guess I've been lucky, wish I had something more, but I don't, other then try to be more careful. Even with a case the right wrong fall will take out the screen, landing face down seems to do it nearly every time, glass is still glass, very strong on it's edge but the face breaks easily. Good luck with the new iPod. Cheers.

  • I have dropped my phone all seems to work just wondered how much to replace the back white case

I have dropped my phone from a box above a door (don't ask!) and the screen is still not cracked (a miracle!) but the white backing case and silver bit between the screen and back case has sort of come apart the phone still works just wondered how much it costs to fix this problem

Search Google for "iPhone parts" and find out for yourself.

Your Desktop Picture settings and Dock items are stored in the files
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
in the "Preferences" folder in your user library. This looks like the system has trouble to write to these files. Check the permissions on your user library and remove the above files from your user library, then log off and on again.
Your user library is hidden in Lion and Mt. Lion. To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.

I recently migrated my MacBook from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8, using the Snow Leopard CD I purchased from Apple. Since then I have noticed a strange ozone smell coming from the MacBook in the area where the hinges are to open and close the unit. I was told by Apple that it probably is not serious and is coming from the fans in the MacBook. It is true that the smell/odor is more intense when the fans are working. Apple said I should take the MacBook to an Apple Store to have the hardware checked out. Everything seems to be working correctly. I am backing up automatically wirelessly to a Time Capsule, which I had not done until recently, although I had purchased the Time Capsule in 2009. I have not noticed this odor before. Does anyone suspect something more serious that may be going on?

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

after i have downloaded an album from iCloud to my new macbook pro. Itunes will only play one song at a time. If i hit the fast forward or back button will not do anything. I have to use the mouse to hit the next tidal in the album then hit play for it to play the next song. Or put it in the UP NEXT.

First, make sure these items have checkmarks next to their names in iTunes. Continuous playback only works on checked items. Itunes will play all checked items in a list whether or not they're from the same album.
If you see that nothing in your library is checked and you want to check everything, hold down Ctrl while checking an item. This checks everything.
Next, fixing the "1 of 1" problem is easily. Select all the tracks that make up the book/album. Let's say there are 15. Press Ctrl-I. Doublecheck that the album box is filled in with the name of the book, and if not, type it there. Enter "15" in the box for the total number of tracks. Click OK. Now all the items should be "1 of 15," "2 of 15," and so on.

  • So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

  • I have a Macbook from 2007 or earlier.  I have OSX 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to Mavericks.  Is this possible or is the model of my computer too old?

I have a Macbook from 2007 or earlier.  I currently run OSx 10.6.8.  I wanted to upgrade to Mavericks so that I can get the new aperature.  However I was wondering if my Macbook model was to old to run mavericks.  Is this the case?  Do i need a newer model?  The other option is to get an different aperature.  Does anyone know what Aperature runs with 10.6.8? Aperature 1.5.1 does not run with my current operating system.

    Probably not, but check below:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • If I have an American MacBook from 2009, what cables do I need to hook it up to an English tv?

I have a MacBook from late 2009. I want to show my videos on iMovie in England to family but I have an American computer. Which cables do I need to connect my American computer to an English tv?

    Hi,
You don't need any special cables to connect. You can use either VGA, DVI or HDMI cables they will work absolutely fine. There's no difference between an American and a British MacBook

Not even close - 3.06GHz is a dual core - 1066MHz system bus.
    2.7GHz = Quad Core - 1600MHz system bus.
Which do you think is faster?

You cannot download the upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
