Macbook display dead

My late 2011 macbook pro display appears to be dead. The computer does turn on and works with an external thunderbolt display. I already tried to reset PRAM, NVRAM, SMC several times (with and without removing the battery).
Also I installed the gfxcardstatus software and the internal display option can't be selected.

You're right; it sounds broken. You will need to get it diagnosed and fixed at an authorised service provider or Apple Retail Store.

  • Have you exchanged a MacBook with dead pixels?

Everything was going smooth with my MacBook - too smooth...
My MacBook is developing dead pixels. I've had it for about 18 days and initially the display was perfect but now it seems that fabled mythical beast, the dead pixel monster, is eating my pixels.
Does anyone know what the official policy is for dead bright pixels? Has anyone actually exchanged a MacBook with dead pixels? If you did get yours exchanged how many dead pixels did it have?
Do you think I am better off to keep the MacBook for a while (wait untill the supply catches up a bit) and then return it - or do I need to deal with the issue within the first 30 days?

things were going smooth with my machine until the screen went black. not a doubt in my mind that the inverter was faulty. so that's a mfg. defect right.
the problem is that apple (like so many companies these days) does not want you bringing a dead/faulty product into their store to just "swap it out."
they're going to want you to send it in and all that fun stuff. normally i wouldn't care so much, but i'm now waiting on a technician to call me back and tell me what to do with the machine - and i'm traveling on friday. mbpro was supposed to be coming with me as it's loaded with all my work for a project. grrrrrr.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

  • Macbook display sometimes fails to turn on after shut down (2008 2.4Ghz dual core 2 duo - 2GB DDR2 running OSX 10.6.8)

I own a black macbook (early 2008 model) and for the past few months the display has occasionally (although recently more often) failed to turn on when booting. This only happens every one in four times after a full shut down. When I turn on the computer, I hear the hard drive boot and the fans start going, I also get a response in the white light indicator. When this occurs, I then have to press the on/off button to shut the macbook down, then press the button to turn it on again. Sometimes this works on the second try, but other times it takes 3 to 4 times turning it on or turning it off. Initially I thought it was a hard drive issue (and planned to purchase a new hard drive), but after connecting the laptop to an external screen, the desktop shows up (macbook display remains off despite unplugging or replugging external display). Is this a firmware issue? Or potentially a display cable issue? I'm leaning towards firmware since it only happens every 1 in 4 times. All parts in the macbook are original to 2008 and I've never really had any problems before.
I've tried resetting by taking out the battery/pressing the on button.
I also did a clean 7 pass wipe and reinstalled Mac OSX.
Used TechTool Deluxe - found no issues.
Booted computer and pressed D to perform a Mac hardware test - no problems found.
Not sure what to do now...
These two looked mildly like my problem: http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/68700/Not+booting+properly+after+10.6.8+and+F irmware+updates and another suggested replacing the display cable: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Display-Data-Cable/IF186-073?utm_sou rce=ifixit_guide&utm_medium=wiki_text&utm_term=if186-073&utm_content=product_lin k

  • Use iPad as MacBook display?

I have an '07 MacBook that took an unfortunate tumble and destroyed all but one corner of the screen. I was going to replace it over the summer with a Desktop and an iPad, but I don't want to get the Desktop now as I'm moving soon.
So what I'm wondering is if it would be possible to hook the iPad up to my MacBook somehow and use it as a display so I can access my MacBook until I can buy a Desktop. I've seen a few topics about using the iPad as a split screen for the Pro but I'm looking for it to completely replace my MacBook display.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Without a display it is difficult to configure any Mac. In the past did you ever enable screen sharing in the System Preferences so that you could view your MacBook from another Mac? If so you may be able to install an app that allowed you to use the iPad by first accessing your MB from another Mac over a network. But that would be difficult to do if you never enabled screen sharing.
If perchance you could install on your MB the apps needed you might look at Air Display for viewing your MB's display from an iPad.

  • Macbook Display vs LCD Display

How does my macbook display compare to a 1080i lcd screen

The 1080 in 1080i is vertical resolution. Assuming a 16:9 widescreen TV, the resolution would be 1920 × 1080. The MacBook LCD's native resolution is 1280 x 800.

  • Macbook display malfunction

    Hello
Late last week while merely surfing the web, I noticed some flickers on my macbook display. I had never seen those before. I've read about flickers on discussions here. Then over the weekend, I would start the computer only to have the display not light up instantly.
The machine is on, and you'd have to hold the MB certain, slight ways (against a light) to see that it is operating. Sitting the MB certain ways would enable the display to actually light up to its normal brightness.
But Monday the display would not light up at all. Again, the MB is operational, the battery is fully charged. But the display is nearly pitch black. Only squinting at it can you see any tiny, grainy vision of the desktop screen. I've tried, out of curiosity, things like extracting and replacing the battery, but to no avail. Might anyone here have any clue as to what's going on? I expect at the least to take it to an apple store/genius bar later this week. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

  • MacBook Display Cleaning

    Hello,
I recently purchased the iKlear Travel Wipes Kit to use in cleaning my screen. I followed the instructions exactly and did result in screen smearing which (after researching on these forums), was resolved by vigorously buffering the screen with the included Blue Chamois cloth in the kit.
Now that my screen is back to normal, is there ANY other product on the market (particularly in Canada) which is available to clean the glossy MacBook display without the result of buffer-able residue streaking? A product which possibly just comes right off without so much effort as required with iKlear Polish?
    Thanks.

I use to clean my screen using micro fiber streak free wipes.
I try not to touch my screen, so what on the screen is mostly dust that is easily wiped out with dry cloth above.
But for smudge oil or finger print on the screen, I damp the fabric lightly by spraying water to the fabric (never spray anything right to the screen). And wipe it clean.
For some oily mark that water cannot erase, I either spray iklear or windex glass (not recommended but work well on my case) lightly on that damp cloth and wipe it one more time. And it makes my screen crystal clear as new.
    Good Luck.

  • MacBook Display Broken

So last night I was in a car accident and my MacBooks display is broken. It is miss aligned and cracks in the display. What are my options does apple cover this? How can I get it repaired? Would my home insurance cover this?

check out www.mbresq.com. I sent them my macbook when my screen got cracked, they mailed me a box sent it off got it back 2 days later or something with a brand new screen. The plus side is it only cost $440. Whoever said apple pays $400 for the lcd is full of it. I wouldn't doubt if they buy them for less than $100, and just gouge people who have broken screens. You can also buy screens yourself and attempt to replace it yourself, but that's a lot more work, and can be much more frustrating.

  • MacBook display brightness will not adjust

My MacBook display brightness is very low level, the F1 and F2 brightness keys bring up the transparent window and show brightness turned all the way down, but F2 does not increase the brightness. In Preferences, the display section shows the Brightness slider all the way to the top, and if I attempt to slide that down it snaps back to the top, and the actual screen brightness does not change from very low. I also have verified that the function keys are NOT set to lock out the brightness function, so pressing command and F1/F2 does nothing. So nothing from previous forums seems to apply! All other function keys operate properly (multi-window, volume, dashboard).

OK guys, think I found a solution to this one.
My girlfriend's mac had the same problem as yours, and I was motivated to fix it becuase I needed to use my mac for my dissertation and she kept stealing it!
anyway, turn the brightness all the way down, press it up once and you will see the screen flash. do it again, really fast up and down up and down and the scree will stay on as long as you keep playing with the buttons.
next, use this temporary fix to get into system preferences -> displays... and change the resolution to something considerably lower. then it stays on permanently. Not too sure about why this happens, maybe the mac can no longer handle that many colours or complexities?
    sod it. enjoy.

  • Macbook Display Darker In Corners

I dont know if I am just being paranoid but I have started noticing that my 4 month old 2GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook display is slightly dark at the bottom two corners. Usually i dont notice it but at times when I see a movie in widescreen, the two dark spots become visible on the black border. Is that normal to do you think Apple will change the display? Its not a major problem but was wondering why it happens. This is my 3rd macbook as one was DOA in a week, other got screwed after I dropped coke on my screen (dont ask). Hence when it comes to Macbook, I am very paranoid

I always keep my display with a completely black background.
There's a noticeable gradation from the bottom to top of my screen as it gets slightly lighter. I see no evidence of differences at the corners. I tilted up, down, and sideways, but even the "gradation" effect is even. But it's an effect noted in a minority of models - particularly the widescreen portables.

Repair doesn't seem an option. But apparently you're not paranoid.

  • MacBook Display Intermittently Freezes and Starts Fading to White (Refers)

Having the same exact issue as OP with my 2007 Macbook Pro. I'll be contacting Apple tomorrow to see if I can get it fixed (w/o a warranty). Right now I have a clamp on the right side of the screen squeezing the bezel to keep the screen active.

You could turn up the brightness of your display.  It's also possible the backlighting has gone bad.
