Macbook Display - Noise, Interlacing/Dithering, and Offset

Hello,
Starting yesterday, my 2011 Macbook Pro (specs below) has been having issues with its display / graphics card.
Frequently, especially while using resource-intensive programs like Chrome or Logic, my display will begin to introduce noise, then go black for a second, then come back on with the screen's image offset, wrapping around from left to right:
After a couple seconds my computer freezes (beach ball, but can still move mouse). Then my keyboard becomes unresponsive, leaving me no option but to shut down.
I double-checked the connection between the display and motherboard - seems fine. This is more likely a problem with the video card, I'd imagine, but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

Processor: 2.2 Ghz intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Startup Disk: 500 GB Samsung Solid State Drive

Thanks, I will take a look at that. In the meantime, here are some relevant-looking system log lines from my last crash:

  • Macbook display unexpectedly changes resolution and cannot be changed

The internal display resolution recently changed unexpectedly such that I now have 1 inch black bars on both sides of my display and the right, left and bottom edges of all images and applications are not viewable. I have gone to system preferences to change the resolution, but the dialog box for changing the resolution pops up far to the right and off of the viewable screen to the point that I am unable to select a different resolution. I have not installed any new hardware or software recently and did not change the resolution, this problem occurred spontaneously. I can see the edge of the display resolution settings box, but I am unable to drag the box to the viewable screen or select any of the other resolution options. Help!

Try starting in Safe mode and see if the screen boots into a normal resolution when starting safe. If it does, change the resolution to something not native that still is useable. Then restart normally and see if the problem is gone. If so, set the resolution back to what it should be (1280 x 800).

If it doesn't effect your other computing, only the display, it may be a bad graphics card.
You can try a PRAM reset
EDIT Wghat year is your MB and do you have AppleCare or Extended AppleCare?

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.

  • HDCP display issue with Yosemite and Macbook air

Hi - Sorry if the question has been asked before and answered.
I have an issue where since I have upgraded to Yosemite, I cannot play any of the movies I bought prior to upgrading and I can even play trailer from the iTunes store...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Too bad this didn't help.
HDCP errors can also occur when your display settings are incorrect and when you have non-original / non-Apple display software installed. Think a special driver to support a specific type of external display, or a remote viewer application like TeamViewer or AirParrot.
If you're having the HDCP error with an external display, disconnect it and test with the MacBook Air's own display.
If the issue persists on the MacBook Air's own display:
To restore your display settings to factory default: do a PRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222?viewlocale=en_US
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If you have special software installed, it would be best to try to boot the computer to safe mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.
If that doesn't solve it, peruse your Applications folder in the Finder and see if you can delete unwanted video / viewing-related applications.

Having the same exact issue as OP with my 2007 Macbook Pro. I'll be contacting Apple tomorrow to see if I can get it fixed (w/o a warranty). Right now I have a clamp on the right side of the screen squeezing the bezel to keep the screen active.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 get hot and noise all the time and slowly ?

hi. why MacBook Pro get too hot and make a noise all the time i have Yosemite ,mac late 2011 and became very slow?

Games are very CPU/GPU intensive applications and will heat up the MBP.  That will result in the fans increasing speed in order to dissipate the heat.  This actually is an expected result and for the type of application, is 'normal'.
I you plan to play a lot of games, consider getting a cooling pad twhich will tend to mitigate the heating.
    Ciao.

Neither Photoshop Elements nor Premiere Elements support the retina display capabilities. There are a couple of feature requests for support to be added to Photoshop Elements but I don't find any for Premiere elements. You might care to open one at http://feedback.photoshop.com.

Two. You can daisy-chain two ATD together. Doesn't matter what you're running.

  • Macbook slow to start-up and displays unusual start-up screen

    Hey everyone,
For the last week or so my Macbook has been behaving strangely when I start it up from sleep: it displays the screen you would normally get after your battery has fully emptied and you have just powered up your computer again (I'm not 100% sure if that makes total sense..it's the screen with the white bars on the bottom that slowly fill up before it takes you to your login screen) This only happens when my Macbook has run out of charge and automatically goes to sleep and then I plug it in and power it up again, which is why I'm concerned because my computer is plugged in when this happens + the battery is fully charged. Also, the computer is very slow to start up and takes about a minute before I can properly log in (the screen freezes, sometimes it goes black for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to normal) and finally the computer seems to be a bit laggy at times and slower than usual. I have already verified my disk and repaired all the errors that came up (using Disk Utility), and this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
I am very confused and cannot figure out why this is happening; I've bought my Macbook only a year ago and I always take exceptional care of it. Has anyone else come across this problem before? If anyone could provide any input or help me figure out the cause, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help in advance

Linc - Thank you so much for your response, at least I now understand what is causing this problem. I'm wondering if you know of a way to stop the computer from going into safe sleep (i.e turn this feature off) while it is plugged into AC power? This has never happened in the last 12 months that I've owned my Macbook and now I'm confused as to why this suddenly changed.
Thanks again in advance for your help

Quite often the HDD is the source of the problems.  Look at this comprehensive guide for possible solutions:

Only an Apple Store or an authorized Apple Service Provider can determine if a repair is economically justifiable. It may be as simple as a dislodged display cable.

  • Unibody Macbook display issue and keyboard backlight issues while booting

I have a 13" aluminum macbook which has been having some issues when booting up. The machine seems to be booting just fine all the way up to the log in screen. The display is normal and everything seems fine. After I log in, the various pieces of the screen start to display (desktop icons, menu bar, etc) and my wallpaper is visible. After a few seconds, the display seems to degrade and the wallpaper image is visible but distorted. It is almost as if the machine is in some sort of safe mode (pardon the windows reference).
Normally, I have my macbook connected to an external display and external mouse/keyboard. After a reboot, this issue occurs. If I put the macbook in sleep mode, and then wake it by clicking the external mouse, the display reappears normally and everything is fine.
The problem is when I am NOT connected to these external devices. The screen stays distorted (like it has lost its full color range) and there are other issues. The keyboard backlight seems to be disables and highlighting text does not work normally. I have tried rebooting, removing the battery and rebooting, resetting the SMC, removing recent applications (chrome, quicklook, etc.). Has anyone heard of or experienced this behavior?
    Thanks.

Have you called Applecare? If you sent the machine in and it came back with a cracked case, that seems like an Apple repair to me.
As for the display issue - I think I would accept it and move on. Unfortunately, with these ever-higher resolution displays, we have more dead pixels. Since no one would pay $3000 for a display with 100% no dead pixel guarantee, Apple has to alot for a few dead pixels being acceptable inorder to keep prices reasonable.

Check with other vendors, this is common practice with LCDs (even HDTVs).
