MacBook display resets to maximum brightness

Hello,
after attaching an external display (Cinema display) to my macbook it automatically resets the LCD display of my MacBook to maximum brightness. After detaching the external display the maximum brightness setting remains on my MacBook.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyonoe know how I can preserve the brightness even when attaching an external display?
Thank you.

Hi everybody,
has anybody determined a solution for this problem yet? My wife has a MacBook that she uses at her desk with an external display. Every time she plugs or unplugs the external display the brightness of the built-in display reverts to maximum.
It's not really that big of a problem, we discovered that the brightness keys on the notebook itself always adjust the built-in display, even if it's not the primary display. The brightness keys on the external keyboard always adjust the brightness of the primary display (the external monitor in this case).
But non-the-less it's still an irritation. It would be nice if it was fixed.
Cheers,
Jens Petersohn

  • MacBook Display Will Not 'Remember' Brightness

Okay, so I finally went out and bought a black one. Since the Core2 models came out, it came to me at a great price.
I'm very happy with it after a RAM upgrade to 2GB and after I turned down the screen brightness. The machine remembered my screen brightness setting until I applied the latest firmware update. Now every time I start (or restart) it, the screen comes on at nearly full brightness.
I find the full on brightness setting to be far too bright (and irritating) and possibly hard on the backlight. What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I think that the
option you mentioned is only available on the Macbook
Pro. I have a black Macbook.
If you're referring to the following:
change the screen resolution to something else and back and reboot.
...then go to System Preferences, Displays and in OS X 10.4.8 you'll surely find an option to change the screen resolution (so: NOT only in the MBP).

  • Why does MacBook display brightness keep going to the lowest brightness?

Hi! My daughter's MacBook (10,4.11)runs perfectly...except for one problem, the display brightness won't stay on the brightest setting. Every time the computer restarts the brightness goes to the lowest setting, which is too dim. We turn it up, it's fine until she does a restart. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

I'm having a similar problem, when I wake my macbook or sometimes when I turn it on, the display is on full brightness even after I've set it to my liking. I'm having to reset the brightness on my macbook all the time because the full brightness is so bright it gives me a headache. I was just trying to figure out if there is a way for me the set my desired brightness once and not have to do it every time I turn the computer on.

  • MacBook display brightness will not adjust

My MacBook display brightness is very low level, the F1 and F2 brightness keys bring up the transparent window and show brightness turned all the way down, but F2 does not increase the brightness. In Preferences, the display section shows the Brightness slider all the way to the top, and if I attempt to slide that down it snaps back to the top, and the actual screen brightness does not change from very low. I also have verified that the function keys are NOT set to lock out the brightness function, so pressing command and F1/F2 does nothing. So nothing from previous forums seems to apply! All other function keys operate properly (multi-window, volume, dashboard).

OK guys, think I found a solution to this one.
My girlfriend's mac had the same problem as yours, and I was motivated to fix it becuase I needed to use my mac for my dissertation and she kept stealing it!
anyway, turn the brightness all the way down, press it up once and you will see the screen flash. do it again, really fast up and down up and down and the scree will stay on as long as you keep playing with the buttons.
next, use this temporary fix to get into system preferences -> displays... and change the resolution to something considerably lower. then it stays on permanently. Not too sure about why this happens, maybe the mac can no longer handle that many colours or complexities?
    sod it. enjoy.

  • Macbook display sometimes fails to turn on after shut down (2008 2.4Ghz dual core 2 duo - 2GB DDR2 running OSX 10.6.8)

I own a black macbook (early 2008 model) and for the past few months the display has occasionally (although recently more often) failed to turn on when booting. This only happens every one in four times after a full shut down. When I turn on the computer, I hear the hard drive boot and the fans start going, I also get a response in the white light indicator. When this occurs, I then have to press the on/off button to shut the macbook down, then press the button to turn it on again. Sometimes this works on the second try, but other times it takes 3 to 4 times turning it on or turning it off. Initially I thought it was a hard drive issue (and planned to purchase a new hard drive), but after connecting the laptop to an external screen, the desktop shows up (macbook display remains off despite unplugging or replugging external display). Is this a firmware issue? Or potentially a display cable issue? I'm leaning towards firmware since it only happens every 1 in 4 times. All parts in the macbook are original to 2008 and I've never really had any problems before.
I've tried resetting by taking out the battery/pressing the on button.
I also did a clean 7 pass wipe and reinstalled Mac OSX.
Used TechTool Deluxe - found no issues.
Booted computer and pressed D to perform a Mac hardware test - no problems found.
Not sure what to do now...

  • Set maximum brightness

    Hi All,
Is there a way to set the maximum brightness of my IBM Thinkpad T43 to "5"?
Currently, I can increase it to 7, but then the display turns off.
I want to avoid this by limiting the possible max brightness to 5.
Can I do that with an entry in the registry?
    Regards,
    Alper

Have you looked in your bios settings? I don't have this model, but some had brightness settings.

  • Macbook Display Problems / Question

I have a Macbook 13.3.  The display sometimes gets really bright and you can't see a thing.  I've been told it could be the inverter board or the LCD display that needs replacement.  But no one if for sure.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

No way to no for sure without replacing each component. The inverter board is usually a lot cheaper and easier fix, so most home repairmen will simply replace that first.
But I will add that there are several other pieces that could be causing the problem. Could be a video cable or the logicboard as well. First thing I would do is connect an external monitor and see if the problem occurs. If not, you know that your logicboard is probably okay.

  • Macbook display malfunction

    Hello
Late last week while merely surfing the web, I noticed some flickers on my macbook display. I had never seen those before. I've read about flickers on discussions here. Then over the weekend, I would start the computer only to have the display not light up instantly.
The machine is on, and you'd have to hold the MB certain, slight ways (against a light) to see that it is operating. Sitting the MB certain ways would enable the display to actually light up to its normal brightness.
But Monday the display would not light up at all. Again, the MB is operational, the battery is fully charged. But the display is nearly pitch black. Only squinting at it can you see any tiny, grainy vision of the desktop screen. I've tried, out of curiosity, things like extracting and replacing the battery, but to no avail. Might anyone here have any clue as to what's going on? I expect at the least to take it to an apple store/genius bar later this week. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

There is no "fix", there needs to be hardware replacements installed

My Macbook displays photographies often very dark, so that some details are not visible at all. Can there be a problem with the LED light?

You could turn up the brightness of your display.  It's also possible the backlighting has gone bad.

  • 6600's display is 2 times brighter than N80...

    Hi guys,
Did you ever noticed that the 6600 is brighter than N80??
please compare these 2 phones display brightnesses..
you can compare it by swiching on the both phones at the same time...
or you can create a white jpg file and open the file in the phone...
if you could write your comments here i will be gratefull...

You are right. Even at maximum brightness on both the 6600 seems brighter. Not twice as bright but clearly much brighter. But to even it out the N80 has a much clearer screen so the brightness level doesn't matter as much.
Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?
Life's too important to take seriously.

  • New MacBook Display is Horrible

I just got my new Aluminum MacBook last night, and it's going right back for refund this morning. The LCD is far inferior to my 1st generation MacBook display, and it's actually one of the worst displays I've seen on a modern notebook computer. I've been an Apple owner since I bought an SE/30, but Apple has screwed up badly here, and I find the new MacBook nearly unusable. (Please note, my current MacBook has a glossy screen; that level of glossiness is not the issue here.)
    The issues:
    1. The whole screen has an icky blue cast, and nothing in the display calibration settings will fix this. My old MacBook has a much more pure and natural looking white. I think Apple needs to work more on the LED back-lighting (or maybe they cheaped out on the MacBook LEDs).
    2. The blacks on the new display are washed out. This is obvious on the start-up animation (with the multi-lingual "welcome" animations against the Leopard nebulae in space). It's not just an issue with black images, however, this propagates to everything looking less crisp. And it's not an issue of adjusting brightness or screen angle. In fact, if you try to adjust the screen angle to get some reasonably good blacks, you get parts of the screen where you have a metallic or posterized effect. I saw this in the store displays as well, but I didn't realize that it would occur under normal viewing angles vs. extreme situations.
    3. Colors are not vibrant (nothing compared to my 1st generation MacBook). By not vibrant, I mean that different hues of blue, for example, are not distinct from one another. When I open Word, the splash screen has four different blue colors in the "feather" shape at the top right. On the old MacBook the blues are distinctly different and colorful, on the new MacBook they are much closer in hue and more dull. I think this is a result primarily of issues one and two above, but it may also have to do with other aspects of the inferior LCD on the Aluminum MacBook.
    4. The new MacBook screen should be called "mirrored" not "glossy". My 1st generation MacBook has a glossy screen. It's good. I rarely have an issue with visible reflections from it. The new MacBook is a constant battle. One major problem is that the screen needs to be pushed farther back to get reasonable contrast, but this angle directly reflects ceiling lights at the user. It's also so significantly more reflective than the previous glossy screen that it picks up windows and floor lamps and everything else a lot more easily. It's a mess.
I hope this helps other folks avoid my mistake in seeking to upgrade from an existing MacBook. The new one is not any faster in day to day use (3D rendering excepted), and it has crippling issues with the display.

    Hey Araboston,
Unfortunately, I personally don't see what you're talking about on my machine, however I want to help in any way I can. First off, it's possible you're seeing two different problems emerge. Using the mini-display port is a different technology than the mini-dvi port of yesteryear. I know from experience, when I hook up components to my hd tv using different connections (hdmi vs. component cable) I notice a difference. With the new technology you may have to re-calibrate your secondary monitor.
As for the laptop screen, I'd be interested to know what lighting conditions you're using your laptop mostly in. Mine worked great in all conditions, right out of the box. But, I'd like to also note that when I checked, the battery count showed a count of 7. In real world terms, that means that the battery was discharged and recharged 7 times. I'm wondering if they do some sort of in-house calibration, that was possibly missed on your machine. The best test would be to take your macbook into the apple store, set it next to a display macbook and see if yours looks any different.
    Best of luck.

  • Closed MacBook display during software update, won't restart

I closed my MacBook while it was installing updates, and then I opened it and tried to turn it back on. Now when I try to turn it on, it's not fullscreen, it's like widescreen display, with a strip of black on either side of the grey, and the edge of the apple are pixelated. Then it makes the startup noise, and starts loading, but then goes black and does it over and over again until I turn it back off. HELP?!

What I would recommend is a few things. First of all I would boot from your Apple cd and run disk utility and I would choose repair disk. After thats done I would repair permissions. Then I would shutdown the MacBook and reset the SMC. You can reset the SMC by removing the power cord, then the battery, and hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Then I would turn your MacBook back on and see how it is. If the problem still persists after that I would try reinstalling OS X. If the problem persists during all of that I would take it to an Apple Repair location.

  • Maximum brightness of Flex2 14 inch FHD 1920x1080

I am goint to buy Flex2 14 inch FHD 1920x1080
I have search its maximum LED brightness but I could not find it.
I also have chatted with lenovo customer service, but they do not know it.
Does anybody know the maximum brightness of Flex2 14 inch FHD 1920x1080 ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I have already bought flex2 14 inch (1920x1080)..
As I feel, the backlight brightness may be around 200 nit.
However, the worst thing is that.. the display color is somewhat browny...or yellowish...
I have tried to change RGB setting.. but the color is not good..
I have searched color profile files in internet.. but I cannot find anything.
The black color is brown in my flex2 laptop..
I am not suggesting to buy flex2...(Flex2 14 1920x1080 is now around 900 dollars..The price is increased)
