Macbook does not recognize external USB drive - except when booting with CD

Hi all,
I recently swapped my Macbook's internal HD (Toshiba 100gb 5400 rpm) into an external USB enclosure (Eagle Consus). The computer does not recognize the external HD, even when using two USB cables for extra power. No luck with safe mode or resetting PRAM. Disk utility just hangs with spinning wheel if I start it. Switching the USB ports does not help.
I thought it might be a power problem until I noted the following:
1)The external drive works fine if I boot the Macbook from the Mac OS install CD... with this I can run disk utility and scan the drive with no problem
2)It works fine on an old Mac Mini with only ONE of the USB connectors plugged in
3)The enclosure worked fine on the Macbook when I had the new drive in it (320 GB 7200 RPM) while copying the files over
Any thoughts?
Many thanks,
--T

It is actually using a power supply, yet it will not actually power on unless it is connected to a computer's USB port. At least this is how it works on my old desktop running Windows 2000. When you disconnect the drive from Windows, or put the machine in hibernate mode, the device actually shuts down. It powers back up once the machine wakes up from hibernate mode.
It's a somewhat older device which predates the Macbook Pro, but it claims to support older Mac, such as the G3, G4, G5, iMac, iBook. OSX 10.0.4. So perhaps it's just too old?
It's a Buffalo HD-HB250U2 (250 GB).
So you're in Japan too?

  • MBP Does Not Recognize External USB Devices

MBP does not "see" external USB devices (such as Garmin Nuvi GPS) or any thumb drive. No external USB devices show up in Finder nor does Disk Utility see them. No cable issues. Have tried restarting several times, but to no avail. This MBP used to recognize these USB devices, but no longer do so.
I have seen this question posed several times in forum, but no suitable answer. Don't know if it is H/W or S/W problem.

    Hi Terry Temple
Is there at least any power going to the USB ports? ( as in if for example you plug in a USB light, will it switch on? )
If there is power in the USB ports it might be a software problem.
Try resetting the SMC see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
also try re-set the PRAM see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
However if you do not have any power at all it probably is a hardware problem.
    Is it still under warranty?

  • My iMac does not recognize external hard drive

My iMac does not recognize my external hard drive.  Disk utility recognizes it and a test of the hard drive does not review any error.  I use the hard drive as a back up for the time machine.  This problem comes and goes.  It comes when I turn off and turn on the computer, with the hard drive attached.
    Please help.
    Insightful

    can be this reasons
01 , you have problem with connection ? check the port if you can find any problems physically .
    02. if not try to change the cable and with connection ,
    03. may be its good idea  to check the hard drive with another mac ?(if you have )
Did you note any diference of sound  from Hard Drive ? listen to it that carefully to note some unusual sound comes when the hard drive works.

  • Macbook does not recognize external monitor

    Hi,
I have a Macbook and I tried to connect an external Benq FP93GW using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter but the external monitor does not detect any signal.
    Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance for any help.

You might read this post of someone who couldn't get his external display to be recognized until he reset the MacBook's SMC (System Management Controller).
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9351216#9351216
This thread also has some other details on trying to workaround color issues on the external display but it was a reset of the SMC that finally allowed the MacBook to recognize the display. However, Apple cautions that a reset of the SMC should only be done after other options or possibilities have been exhausted. Before you try a reset of the SMC you might want to try a reset of the MacBook's PRAM.

  • My macbook does not recognize my hard drive

I bought a new hard drive and have gotten a new OS disk but now it shows the folder and blinking question mark every time i turn it on.
What do i need to do next.?

If you insert the OS disk (is it one for this model MacBook or a generic retail OS install disk, or something else?) and boot the computer while holding the C key down on your keyboard, will it boot to the install disk?
If this happens, go into the Utilities and look for Disk Utility. Does DU recognize the new hard drive? What format is the hard drive initialized to?
If not initialized using Mac OS Extended - Journaled format, you should go to the Erase tab and set it to that format and erase the drive. This will correct the format.
Once this has been done, quit Disk Utility and try to run the installer.
Let us know what happens, we'll keep helping you.
    Best of luck.

  • Migration assistant does not recognize external hard drive

I just had a new hard drive placed in my computer, and am trying to restore my old data using an external hard drive and migration assistant.  However, after I click on transfer from time machine or disk, the external hard drive is not recognized.  Help.

Boot into Recovery from the backup drive by holding down the option key at the startup chime. Select Restore from Time Machine. If that doesn't work, install OS X and then follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup. If that too doesn't work, set up an account and then restore your data in the time-travel interface.

  • Itunes does not recognize external hard drive

I am a dj and I have a couple of external hard drives to back up my music. Here's what happened last night and things haven't been the same since. Last night I have daisychained one exteranl hard drive with my new xternal that has a copy of all my music on it. I changed the folder to my new hard drive the other day and it was working fine. Well, last night I was working on updating some music and I didn't realize that my iBook G4 laptop wasn't plugged in so the screen went dark. I panic a bit and power downed my two hard drives without dismounting them properly. When I realized it was just the power cord I plugged it back in and I thought everything was fine. Now this morning when I try to run off of only my new xternal almost all of my library is showing that it can't be found. Now, when I plugged in an old external and daisychained it with the new one it works fine. What do I need to do so that it recognizes only the new hard drive with everything on it. I tried changing the folder in the advanced tab and it still comes up unrecognized. Please help me I have tons of gigs coming up soon and I use my itunes as a reference tool.
    Thanks,

Thanks. Realized something though...on the old computer, Windows XP had a problem (R6034) that prevented iTunes from opening or upgrading.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • DVD Player 4.6.5 does not recognize external DVD drive

I had to get an external DVD drive (Sony DRX-S70U) for my Intel iMac after the built in one crapped out. I just put in a DVD and when DVD Player 4.6.5 opens it says "There was an initialization error - A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"
But the DVD appears on the Desktop. So it knows its there, just DVD Player won't work. Is there any way to change the preferences or anything so that DVD Player will work? I know I can download a 3rd party software, but I'd like to use the Mac stuff if possible.
    Thanks!

Try this.. Read the NOTE in 10. FIRST.
    1. Create a New User: Sign in as New User.
    2. Dbl Click HD Icon, locate User Icon. This will show your orig user and the new user acct.
    3. Click the New User.
    4. Locate the Library Icon and open it.
    5. Locate Applications Folder, open it.
    6. Locate DVD player folder. Open it there are 2 folders. (this is good). Red X Close
    7. Use the EDIT from top menu bar. Make Duplicate, this copies the folder without the 'copy' name on the file. "DVD player" is what you want. Otherwise wont work.
    8. Paste it to your desktop.
    9. Close the New User folder. This drops you back to Users folder.
    10. Open the original user acct. **NOTE, at this point you may begin to see little red dots on the folders. When you see them, Click on the LIB folder, then use the "GET INFO" command to show the status of the permissions. Click the DETAIL tab, and click the yellow lock next to OWNER. Change ownership to read as your orig acct. Change permissions to READ AND WRITE. Group: Staff (it worked for me). Click APPLY TO ENCLOSED ITEMS, click the yellow lock. Check the info before closing the menu. You may have to repeat this as you delve deeper.
    11. Dbl click LIB, then Application Support. Then paste or drag the DVD player folder in.
    12. Close out all windows, LOG off as new user.. Log on as Orig user.
    13. Dbl click HD icon, Applications Icon, find DVD player Dbl click that. It should work.
Thanks to all the input from the Discussions that allowed me to solve this problem.

i've tried set the both connection timeout proprieties to 5000 but it stil does nott generate an exception. i've tried to chage the try catch block to catch Exception rather than MessagingException but it still does not generate an exception.
So i have another environment where using the same mail server and code it is working and i.ve generated the debug message and the next message is
DEBUG: getProvider() returning javax.mail.Provider[TRANSPORT,smtp,com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport,Sun Microsystems, Inc]
I don't understand why it blocks here and why this message is not shown. i don't think its a connection problem. maybe a configuration issue, so i'm triyng to understand whats going wrong.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Based on the debug output, you're using a very old version of JavaMail.  You should consider upgrading.
The debug output shows no attempt to connect to any server, so it appears that something is going wrong even before then.
If the program is really blocked, try to get a stack trace showing where it's blocked.
Also, try catching Throwable to make sure you're not missing some kind of unexpected failure.
Do you have a standalone application, or is it running in some sort of application server?
What version of the JDK are you using?

  • Windows XP re-installation does not recognize any hard drive - help

    Hi,
    I have X60s Model: 17044JU
    I have original XP installed.
My computer is very slow and I am trying to reinstall XP from my CD (and format HD so I clean everything).
When Windows installations blue screen shows up and loads drivers etc then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drive.
I thought I may need SCSI or RAID drivers but since I don't have floppy I can not load them.
Any help how to install new XP would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi
I changed BIOS setup from AHCI to Compatibility and indeed it worked.
However there is easier way to reload new system on thinkpad.
I didn't know that but you can press ThinkVantage button when you start your laptop and IBM utilities start up.
Then there is an option to reload the system to be in original state as shipped from the factory. It loads or drivers and initial programs. It also formats your hard drive.
    I found it pretty convenient.
    Thanks for help.

  • Mac mini does not recognize external drive

I have an 80GB external drive full of music files. I disconnected my computer to move to a new house and, with everything re-connected, the mini does not recognize the external drive. I wonder whether it is because the internal drive is nearly full. I have tried restarting the computer, disconnecting and re-connecting the USB cable to the external drive, serching for it with the disk utility, un-pluggin the external drive power cable and re-connecting it, but I'm out of ideas. What might have happened?

  • G4 does not recognize external enclosure with old drive from my MacBookPro

I recently upgraded my MacbookPro (OS 10.6.8, version 5,5) hard drive and I put MBP original drive in a Sabrent 2.5" USB-SATA hard drive enclosures. This USB external drive booted right up on the MBP, all files intact. One reason for the new MBP drive was to use the orignial drive as increased storage on my G4 (which has a working USB 2.0 card). My other USB external drives work fine on the G4, so the card works.
The Sabrent USB enclosure is not recognized by the G4. I am hoping to not have to reformat the drive until I am completely confident my new HD in the MBP works well (it is fast!). The Sabrent enclosure (EC-UST25) comes with a funky two-headed USB cable to plug in a second port if there is not enough power coming from the USB port to power the unit. I used both USB plugs in the G4 USB board, restarted several times with no success.
So the question is, will this hard drive (a Toshiba, I believe) word as an external USB drive on the G4? Do I need to reformat it in some special way?
Thanks for any and all help!

The Sabrent USB enclosure is not recognized by the G4.
The chipset of that controller is likely the issue.
Either that or the fact that it is bus powered. An external power supply might help, but G4 were never intended to use those enclosures.
One reason for the new MBP drive was to use the orignial drive as increased storage on my G4
As is, read only. MBP use GUID partition sheme, PPC Macs (G4, G5) use APM.
To write or boot to the drive, reformat is necessary.

  • Macbook won't recognize external Hard Drive and issues with Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I have just bought a new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion and I am currently having problems with Time Machine.
The issue begun in Snow Leopard: Time Machine was taking too long to backup, and would often not finish the backup because the external hard drive would be unwillingly ejected.
Now with Mountain Lion I have reformated the drive (Mac OS Journaled) and about a third of the way through had the same issue: the drive was ejected before the backup could be finished. I restarted the machine and it happened again. However, now the computer won't even recognize the external drive when I plug it in. I have also tried to power off/on the drive itself to no progress.
I have tested the USB port with another drive and the port is fine. I have also tested the usb cable and it is fine. And Disk Utility does not recognize the drive (even when I try the >diskutil list command in terminal).
Now, I can hear the drive humming normally when I turn it on, and it is not usb-powered (my electricity current does fluctuate).
Could the interrupted backup procedures have damaged the drive? And if so, wouldn't the computer recognize it anyway?
It is a 4 year old WD 1 TB that is used exclusively for TM and has never left the house.
Thank you for your time reading this and let me know if you need any more information that could help out.
    Cheers!

From your description, I'd suspect a failing drive. Maybe time for a new external, especially as you've already re-formatted and it's still playing up.
I had a similar problem with one of my clone backups a few weeks ago - it failed, I erased it, re-cloned, worked a couple of times and then it failed again. Disk Utility didn't throw up any errors after re-formatting. I guess all disks die at some point.

  • Does not recognize bootable usb

My HP laptop does not recognize some bootable usb devices in the boot menu.
I have a HP tower and the laptop in my office and the tower will recognize and boot the a USB device that the laptop will not recognize in the boot menu.
    Laptop: HP Pavilion dm1z-4100, BIOS HP vF.19 2/4/2013, Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    Tower: HP HPE-480t, BIOS American Megatrends v6.10 9/16/2010, Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Example of non recognized device in laptop (OK in tower): USB HDD WD60 OUE-22 HCTO
The external HDD reacts the same as some memory sticks. All the boot devices appear to be syslinux bootable
I have never found a non recognized bootable device in the tower PC boot menu, but several in the laptop PC.
No problem with laptop using external CD/DVD drive
The problem appears to be in the BIOS, because the boot menu occurs prior to the operating system.
Latest BIOS listed in the updates is F.19 (same as installed)
    Any comments?
