MacBook does not see content on external hard disk

I copied my user directory from my PowerBook to an external hard disk. Now i have a MacBook instead and it cannot see my files. I can however see files from another user. If I look at the filesize and how much is in use, then I can see that there is more on the external hard disk. It also says I have the right to read and write.
What should I do?

If you can see the home folder on the external disk and it has a red circle on its icon, drag the folder to your desktop and type in your administrator password when prompted.
If you cannot see the home folder in the external disk but know where it is, navigate to the enclosing folder, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and enter the folder's name as the path.
If you cannot see the home folder and don't know where it is on the hard disk, copy and paste the script posted here into the Script Editor in your /Applications/AppleScript/ folder, run the script to show the invisible items on the disk, locate it, and do what you want with the contents.

  • Mac mini does not see files on external hard drive

Just got a new Mac Mini and this is my first Mac.  How do I get files from my HD to my new mac mini?  I backed up the files from my old laptop but when I plug it into my Mac, I don't have any picture or music files.

I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps

  • Lightroom 1.4.1 does not recognize directories on external hard disks

I just upgraded to Lightroom 1.4.1 and, now, cannot export files to external hard drives. Lightroom sees the external drive and it is displayed with the standard + indicating sub directories are available. when I click the +, it disappears and nothing shows under the external drive folder.
This was not a problem with 1.3.1

The only thing I can think of is that the Library is corrupted in some way. Unusual that the main computer can access it - though it rebuilds the thumbs each time, whiile the other two cannot. I suspect that the permissions warnings are bogus.
Neither of the other machines would be able to read that library without updating it, and in fact, once the 9.5.1 version updates it, the 9.4.3 version wouldn't  be able to read it either.
But either way, each library should ask to upgrade it upon opening, that the don't suggests that the Library is damaged.
You need to decide what version you want to want to view this library with - as you can't view it with either of the other two once you upgrade it. Then from that machine rebuild the Library with iPhoto Library Manager.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted

My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted, How can install the operating system.
    regards,
    Tassew

Did you erase the hard drive yourself? If not, what exactly are you seeing, and what happened immediately prior to you starting to see it?
Your profile indicates that you are/were running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.4) on a retina MacBook Pro, so you should be able to hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, and you can reinstall the system from there. But whether or not you need to do something else first depends on your answers to the questions above.

  • My 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent?

After the latest apple IOS upgrade my 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook, lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent? There are so many people complaining about this issue and expecting Apple to correct this issue that they have created.

Probably because it's not an Apple issue. I have Lacie EHD's connected to my MBAir and iMac, all work perfectly on Mavericks. In addition I don't have any keyboard issues on any of my Apple products. BTW IOS is only for IOS devices such as iPads, iPods and iPhones, Macs use OS X. The two OS's are seperate  products designed to run on seperate products.

  • MacBook does not see internal hard disk

Sorry if this is already answered somewhere, but I have searched so many forums that my head is swimming!
My boyfriend connected a new USB drive to his MacBook, formatted the new disk, copied some backup data onto it. At some point, the MacBook hung, so he held down the power key until the MB turned off.
Each time we restart it now, we get the flashing-folder-with-question-mark, and Tiger won't boot.
I have tried almost all of the tips I can find, and was even willing to reinstall OS X, however... the MacBook does not appear to see it's internal hard disk. As such, I cannot perform first aid on the disk via booting to setup DVD, and I cannot reinstall OS X.
If I boot from the OS X install disk, and use Disk Utility, the MB only sees the CD-RW/DVD-RW drive and the install disc. No internal HD ever shows up.
Help! I am at a loss as to how to fix...

Let me guess: you're also experiencing a low clicking noise from the right side of your mac immediately after you turn it on, right? Same thing happened to me and others, in fact there are several threads on this subject already:

My drive was done for, and no data could be saved. I ended up buying a new drive, and now I'm just hoping the same thing doesn't happen again. I'm beginning to get a sense that this problem is occurring on a more frequent level now that the 1st generation macbooks have reached their 1-year birthday, give or take. Let's hope Appel fesses up if it is indeed a design flaw.
Anyway, you most likely need a new drive. I just got a Hitachi Travelstar 250 gb for around 200$US, so they're quite cheap, and VERY easy to install, just 3 screws, slide it in, boot up, run disk utility, erase/format and you're good to go.

  • Something went wrong with iPad photo/Video import and now iPhoto on Mac does not see content.

I just connected my iPad (4.3.2) to my mac (10.5). It launched the synch process for photos and videos and everything went fine. I then clicked on one of the newly imported photos in iPhoto and it choked and ultimately closed the app and gave me message along the lines of "iPhoto quit Unexpectedly." I rebooted the machine and when it came up went to look in iPhoto and saw that the new photos/video were not there. They are still on the iPad (Fortunately!) However when I reconnect the iPad to the Mac it does not see any content to import. In essence it seems to think it did the import and is not aware that it lost the content.
There's a couple possible solutions I'm interested in. One, are the photos/video somewhere on the Mac and just need to be dug up? I nosed around a bit but found nothing. Then other solution would be is there some way to force iPhoto to reimport what's on the iPad, ignoring that it feels it's already done this?
    Thanks,
    Wil

Where did these photos come from to begin with? Did you import them from the iPad into iPhoto on your Mac? Is that what you are saying here?

  • New macbook does not "see" my network, old macbook pro and iphones do...

Yesterday I installed an upgrade to my airport extreme base station, now my macbook pro and the 2 iphones in the household see the wifi network but the other macbook does not. It does see the neighbors wifi networks and will see it when I connect via a cable to the base station by no wireless connection... help!

I am having a similar problem. I have 19 iBooks in a classroom and, suddenly, none of them can see the AirPort Express network when they log on. Instead, the iBooks try to connect to a Windows-based school network. I have designated the AEBS network as the only preferred network but the iBooks NEVER try to connect to it first. However, if you click on the AirPort icon in the menu bar, the AEBS network is clearly visible and clicking on it immediately connects you to the AEBS network.
When I originally set up the network in January, everything worked just fine. After the upgrade to AE Firmware 5.7 and various OS X 10.4.5 updates, everything has gone downhill. I had the dropped signal problem that so many have reported. I downgraded to AE Firmware 5.5.1 and followed J. Exby's procedure to upgrade the AEBS framework. That solved the dropped signal problem. But now my iBooks cannot find the AEBS network when they log in.
I have set the AirPort Network Preferences to connect Automatically or to Preferred Networks with the same result. I have also set the option to "Keep looking for recent networks" and it never finds our AEBS network. Yet, the network can be accessed manually through the AirPort icon.
BTW, I use one of the iBooks myself and it works perfectly and finds my preferred network in 2 other locations with non-AEBS networks. But it cannot see its own preferred network in school.
This is really bugging my students--and me! Any suggestions? THANKS!

  • MacBook Does Not See HP Photosmart C4480 Connected to Airport Express

I have an AT&T 2wire wireless & router as my internet access. Today I turned off the 2wire wireless and was able to set up an Apple-based home network with an Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express which I configured to extend the AEBS network. Both the AEBS and Airport Express show "green" for setup.
    iTunes sees the Airport Express.
The Airport Express sees a HP Photosmart C4480 printer I have connected to it via the USB port.
    - I do not have the C4480 driver installed on the MacBook.
PROBLEM: The Macbook sees the AEBS and Airport Express but DOES NOT see the HP printer connected to the Airport Express. When I go to System Preferences > Printer > Add Printer it does not see the HP and I don't know the IP address to add it. What can anyone recommend?
    Thank you

Apple Tech Support solved this problem quickly and easily. In short, the USB connected printer was pointed to the computer and not the Airport Express. Here's what they ran me through:
    - Assumes the Airport Express sees the printer as connected via USB
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Regardless of the printers you see, click the "+" button to add a printer
    3. Select the Default icon
    4. Check the Kind... should be Bonjour
    5. Select the printer type connected to the Airport Express... the system will start to add such a printer
    6. Ensure the Location is the Airport Express (mine was previously pointed to the MacBook)
-- You can change the name here is you like also such as "Kitchen HP Photosmart c4480)... recommend a different name than the original one installed so you know which one to remove later
    7. Select Add
    8. Remove the original printer which is pointing to the MacBook
You should be good to go.... Key points: Bonjour and Location as the Airport Express

  • Macbook does not see wireless printer

My laserjet 1102w is connected to an airport extreme and I can print wirelessly from a windows 7 pc.
However, my Macbook Pro does not see the wireless printer. I can print though if I connect the printer directly via USB.
When trying to add a printer via the '+'button in Finder > Printer & Fax there is no response and nothing to connect to.
Anyone knows how to resolve this ?

    Hi,
Be sure to enable Wireless Direct as listed within Steps one below, as well locate the display name as listed:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03351623&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en &product=5169041&tmp_track_link=ot_search#N96
Once you are done click the WiFi icon on your Mac and select Join Other Network.
Click on Show Networks and the Wireless Direct network should be listed there.

  • MacBook does not see Airport Express

My Macbook does not find my AX when I scan for it using Setup Manager. I used it fine about 3 mos ago just for iTunes, but now I need to use it as a real router and I can't even find it.
I have reset, and reset while plugging in. Still nothing.
Please help me get my AX working!
    Thanks
    Trevor
...ps I am good at giving stars etc

So, I finally tried unplugging and resetting everything. I reset my cable modem, and unplugged my AX, and shut down my computer. Then I did everything fresh from the beginning, making sure that things were plugged in appropriately and it worked! Good news.
But the place where I finally got it working wasn't where I wanted it. Yesterday after it had been working for about a week, I decided to move it to a more central location. ...now I am back where I was when I wrote the first question.
I tried setting it up using the Airport Admin Utility and it responded while I was connected with the ethernet cable, but as when I moved the other end of the cable to the cable modem from my computer, nothing. So, I reset soft and hard. Nothing. Now it just flashes.
Any other ideas? Once it is set, do I just move the ethernet cable like I did, or did I mess that part of it up?
    Thanks so much!

  • To Upgrade or Not To Upgrade (From External Hard disk to Internal Hard Disk

    Hi, need some advise here.
Currently I have a External Hard Disk (320GB) connect with my IMac with Internal Hard Disk of standard 80GB.It is ok just that have to power on/off the External Hard Disk. It is very common that I forgot to power on the External Hard Disk and my iTune library goes to other location in the Internal Hard Disk instead of follow my setting in my External Hard Disk.
So I am considering remove the standard 80GB in my IMac and change with the 320GB.Read some instruction/procedure on this to me look complicated with the thermal pad thing so now hesitating worth the risk to swap the hard dsik or just leave it as it is.
Leave it as it is or change it?
    Any advice ?

Here's a link to a take-apart guide I used a few times to replace & upgrade drives & memory in my old G4.

No it's not as easy as opening up a pc, but the key word is patience. The key thing to remember is to make sure you get some heatsink paste from your local computer store, and apply it to the areas that need it before buttoning everything back up.
It'll only take you a few hours if you work carefully. While you have it open I highly suggest upgrading your upper memory stick, as well as upgrading your superdrive. I get all my stuff here, they haven't steered me wrong yet:

  • MacBook pro does not recognize my WD external hard drive anymore

I use TIme Machine on my WD external hard drive. Everything was working great up until about a month ago. My MacBook Pro does not recognize my external hard drive anymore...I have done nothing differently than usual. I did search in previous discussions and tried rebooting both the hard drive and the computer.
The USB port is fine as it does recognize another external hard drive and also pen drives....Please help! I haven't backed up in a month and need to figure out how to get this to work soon. Should I call WD?

Does the WD drive show in Disk Utility?
Many times, a USB port simply cannot provide the power a hard drive needs. It is not uncommon for any electric motor to draw more power as it ages. A drive that worked before can stop working when it gets older because age has made it tak more power than any USB port can supply. There are a couple of cheap things to try:
    1) A "Y" USB cable---two plugs go to the computer and one to hte drive, giving a power boost.
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
    2) a POWERED USB hub. That takes the power delivery burden off the USB port so it can deal with data.
WD bare drives are fine but their enclosures are not very Mac-friendly. One thing that has reported helping is to get rid of the proprietary formating that WD puts on their drives. If you don't have to share the drive with a Windows computer, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the drive to Macintosh Extended Journaled.

  • Macbook does not see new hard drive

I have one of the first black macbooks...
    Intel Core Duo

    2mb L2 Cache
    2GB RAM
    667 MHz bus
    Boot ROM Version: MB11.0061.B03
    SMC Version 1.4f12
I had an 80GB HD in it that has died.  I decided to replace it with a WD Scorpio Blue 160GB.
I've booted to the optical drive and went into Disk Utility to format the new drive but the computer would not recognize the drive.  So I formatted it with another computer using a USB enclosure.  I put the new HD back and still not recognized.
I then went ahead and installed Snow Leopard on the new drive via USB enclosure, using the macbook I would eventually put the drive into.

Let us resume the required steps, after putting inside a new, virgin disk:
    1. Start up machine and as soon as possible put CD/DVD, press key C to force boot from CD; if the sequence is not fast enough and machine passed over the initial phase, and ? was displayed, force shut down by pressing button key, then start again, with CD/DVD inside
    2. Press key C after start, and wait until the Apple logo in displayed, wait
    3. You will see a list of install language, choose one, and
    4. Go to Apple bar and choose Disk Utility; on the left side, you will see the disk, select it, then, on the cenral-lower part of displayed windows go to Options and choose Apple Partition Map (APM), go back and choose, if not already chosen by default, Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+), 1 partition (or more, some prefer more than one), click to partiion/erase disk. Note that you MUST have both conditions achieved: APM and HFS+
    5. Close Disk Utility and revert to installation proper, proceed.
If you do not see the disk on the left side of Disk Utility, then disk is damaged or badly connected.
P.S. The same procedures are applied to any disk, with the note that:
    - for Intel Macs, partition map should be GUID, not APM
    - for external disks or flash drives intended to smoothly work with Windows, format should be FAT 32 and Master Boot Record; NTFS may be done with an additional utility like NTFS-3G or NTFSmounter
