MacBook doesn't boot windows 7 (harddisk problem)

hello,
a few weeks ago i replace my original harddrive by a grater one. i reinstalled osx and all looks fine. yesterday i tried to install windows with help of boot camp. i inserted the install dvd and the macbook boots and runs windows 7 setup. at the partition selection dialog there were no partitions at all. after a few reboots i was able to select my bootcamp partition but at the reboot during the windows setup the same problem. a few reboots later the installation has finished. i ejected the windows install dvd and now the black and white windows prompt tells me that there isn't any bootdrive. a few reboots later i was able to run windows and selected windows as the default startup volume in bootcamp. now the macbook shows me a flashing question mark at windows boot.
it feels like a efi driver problem for me. Anybody an idea how to solve this?

Perhaps it's useful to look which process is eating up all CPU time.
From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
To determine if a specific process or application is impacting performance:
Open Activity Monitor (Leopard, Tiger, Panther®) or Process Viewer (Jaguar), >located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
In the Show pop-up menu in the toolbar of Activity Monitor or Process Viewer, >assure All Processes is selected.
Sort the list of processes by %CPU in descending order:
In Activity Monitor, click the %CPU column heading until the data in that column >is sorted in descending order.
In Process Viewer, click the %CPU column heading, then click the arrowhead at >the right side of the column headings until the %CPU column is sorted in >descending order.
The process or application using the greatest % CPU is now at the top of the >list.

  • Galileo v1 doesn't boot Windows or show in Galileo Watcher

    Got my v1 board yesterday.
I took the 16gb card that came with it and provisioned with the Windows image as per the setup instructions.
I also have downloaded the Arduino IDE and updated the firmware (from 1.0.0 to 1.0.4). I am able to successfully execute the "Blink" script as they outline for a test.
When I connect the Galileo via USB to my computer, nothing happens but it gets mapped as a COM port. It doesn't show in watcher.
When I connect the ethernet to my PC w/ the supplied USB-Ethernet adapter, nothing happens. It doesn't show in Watcher and I also can't telnet in to it as indicated.
    Please help.

Have you connected your Galileo to your network?  I am assuming that you followed the steps for "Connecting and booting Windows" at  "http://ms-iot.github.io/content/SetupGalileo.htm
    NOTES:
    1. It can take up to 2 minutes for the Galileo to appear in Galileo Watcher.  Do you see network activity from the Galileo itself?
    2. With the USB to Network adapter, the USB plugs into your PC and the network plugs into the Galileo. It does not work to have the USB connected to the Galileo as Windows for Galileo connects to TCPIP through the built In Network connector on the Galileo
    3. The network cable will also work without the USB adapter if you directly connect from the Galileo to your PC network card or a local hub connected to the same PC on the same subnet.
    4. You can look up issues on MS Connect, the site where you downloaded the Galileo image, to see if other folks have hit your problem.

  • Macbook Pro XP Boot Camp Audio Problem

I've got a uni body Macbook Pro running XP with boot camp. Everything has been fine for the last 4 or 5 months I've had it. In the last few weeks though, I've been having really annoying audio problems. The only reason I have it XP even installed is for games (Battlefield 2 and Steam). I'd run skype to talk to a buddy and then play the game. Audio was fine, including the mic.
Lately, skype will just shut down out of no where and give me that error message where it asks you to send a report. Also, the audio in Battlefield 2 will just cut out. I'd still be in the game and connected but there would be no audio, except for the game VOIP. Remember things were working fine for months.
First I tried repairing with the Mac disk, then I tried different Real Tek drivers, then I tried uninstalled and reinstalling the game. None of that worked. Finally, I nuked the partition and did a clean install. The first thing I installed was BF2. Guess what. SAME EXACT PROBLEM. Audio cut out about 10 minutes in. In game VOIP was fine but all other audio was gone.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas at ALL? There aren't exactly a bunch of different drivers I can try, and like I said I've already tried reinstalled the drivers from the mac disk. I have no idea what else to do.
tl:dr - new mbp audio worked fine for months, lately audio in games totally cuts out. Tried reinstalled game, drivers, etc, didn't work. Nuked from orbit and did clean bootcamp install of XP. Battlefield 2 has same problem, same with skype. What next?

What anti-virus solution are you running in Windows?
Users have experienced crashes and blue screens of death from Norton products. Norton has resolved these issues in their 2009 product line. I would only recommend Norton 2009 products, Kaspersky, and AVG for anti-virus solutions.
Have you formatted your Windows partition as NTFS, or has it been formatted as Fat 32?
Fat 32 will not handle file sizes of 3.5 GB or larger, and, overall, it seems to always cause issues.
Have you tried a SMC reset?

  • Macbook doesn't boot after upgrading to 10.8.3

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro currently running 10.8.2.  I downloaded and applied the 10.8.3 update the other day, but upon reboot I get the circle with a line through it.  I rebooted into recovery, checked disk/permissions (no problems), reinstalled the OS from the the recovery menu, reset PRAM, and tried to boot into safe mode but it still won't boot with the circle/line.  I recovered from a Time Machine backup and was up and running again on 10.8.2 for a few days.  I gave 10.8.3 another try when it nagged me, and now the result is the same again.
The disk drive is a single partitioned SSD, rebooting is fine and everything is functional in 10.8.2, but the upgrade now has failed twice.  I've searched around and haven't seen anyone else have this particular problem with 10.8.3.  I don't have AppleCare, and I'm not sure what to try next.  Any ideas?

I have a somewhat similar problem.  I have a Intel Based 24- inch, early 2008 iMac [3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB] where the the original 1TB hard drive failed.  I replaced it with a WD 2TB drive.  I cloned another iMac that was running 10.8.4 onto a firewire 1TB Maxtor Drive and then cloned this drive to the new WD 2TB drive.  The WD 2TB drive will not boot; however, the Maxtor 1TB Drive will boot as an external firewire device.  Any suggestions?

  • Macbook doesn't boot up after mavericks update

updated my macbook to the new OS and it said shutting down for a restart. never restarted and now i can't even turn on. no power up. no boot up.

parag14 wrote:Would efibootmgr help in any way?
You can check the boot order by using:
    efibootmgr
You can set the boot order using:
    # efibootmgr -o xxxx,yyyy,zzzz
Replace the letters with the bootnumbers given by the first command.
You can probably use this method to reset Arch at the top of the list rather than re-installing GRUB.

  • Update 10.7.2, backup TM, doesn't boot, encoding, fonts problems

    Hello,
after updating from 10.7.1 to 10.7.2 on my MacBookPro late 2009 I have following problems:
    1. After update, I couldn't boot from my HDD which was encrypted by FileVault. A forbiden sign came up (s. attached).
    2. My first try was: Make a clean install from Recovery HD. After I dowloaded Lion from Apple Store I proceeded installing it, but after 10 min I got the following message: "Install Failed: Mac OS X could not be installed on your scomputer. The installer could not remove old systems files on  "MacHDD". Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again". I tried again, but it failed with the same message.
    3. Third attempt: after booting into the recovery HG I erased the HD with Utility Tool. After that I tried to install Lion 10.7.2 from App Store. It succeeded. During the installation I was asked to migrate my data from a backup which I accepted. After install and migrating I had following problems:
3.1 I can't see any emails I imported during the TM, Safari fails to display the font/encoding. System messages appears the same: All I can see instead of letters are quadrats with the letter "A" inside (s. attached)
3.2 My Firefox Profile failed from TM
3.3 I can't receive my emails from Mail.app I have connection to internet, but Mail can't connect to the mail servers/ports
    4. I went to Apple Store in Munich: they gave me advice to try to first downgrade to Snow Leopard from the CD, then update to 10.6.8 to get App Store and after that re-download Lion again and install it. After that use Migrate Assistant to get my data from the TM backup. I did so, but first I formatted the hard drive. After each step I checked the system, it looked well. After migration of my data the same thing like 3.1 - 3.3.
About my TM Backup: it is pretty old unfortunately... [August 2011] After updating to 10.7 The encryption via FileVault was activated in Septmeber. After that I am not sure I let the bakup run via Time Machine... But I think I once connected the external HDD to make a backup, but am not sure if it was completed at all...
Please help me, I try to fix my system which used to run smoothly, since 3 days I am trying to fix it, can't sleep and work... What are your ideas????
    Thank you
    Greetings from Munich
    Alla

tried verifying the hd and it said that my disk can't be repaired.
Boot from your Recovery Partition (or another volume with Disk Utiltiy) and run Disk Utility > Repair Disk. Run it several times if it's unsucessful on the first try until it reports the disk seems OK, or it cannot repair.
If it can't repair it, you should be sure you have a good backup. You can try to zero out the disk by re-formatting using the write zeros option. Then, try a fresh install. Or, the disk may be beyond any repair and you'll need to replace it.
In the meantime you can run off a clone if you have one.

  • Suddenly, Macbook doesn't boot up in single user mode or verbose mode

Hello, I use the single-user boot up quite often to check permissions and do a fsck after my mac crashes.
I do this by pressing Apple(Command)-S at startup or cmd-V for the verbose mode. I do this all the time.
But now my Mac won't take it anymore. It just refuses to accept any key combo. Any ideas why this is happening?
    thanks.

Hi Jose, actually you don't have to boot to single user and repair permission all the time. Just perform that after you update your software and or hardware.
Can you start up normally and then use your keyboard as usual, or is the keyboard refuse to do so?
Try to reset your PRAM and or PMU to refresh your hardware behavior.

  • My iMac can't boot Windows 7 From USB while my Macbook Pro can do it

I install Windows 7 64 bit and rEFIt into a USB hard disk and hope to boot from my iMac 27" (2010 Mid). However, it shows that no boot deivce is found.
If I plug the SAME disk to my Macbook Pro 17" (2009 Mid), it can boot Windows 7 without any problem.
I tried with Linux and get same result, iMac says no boot device while my Macbook Pro can boot it without problem.
I tried experiment for weeks and still can't get iMac work.
I think it is very abnormal and I wonder if someone can tell me how to fix it or any directory to solve this problem.

My iMac runs snow leopard and my MacBook pro runs Lion. Both of them are updated with latest updated. I just get one external USB hard disk with Windows 7 32 bit installed and magically, my iMac can boot it from rEFIt. However, I don't know what makes it works. I tried to make same configuration, software and steps on other USB hard disks for hundreds times but I can repeat it again. All other attempt can make USB hard disk boot on MacBook Pro but not iMac only.

  • Macbook pro doesn't boot after iOS upgrade

    Hi all,
I've upgraded my macbook pro (was requested automatically the upgrade) and after reboot to finish the installation, my macbook doesn't boot up.
Is there any way to boot it up? A kind of boot in safe mode?
I'm trying to power it up but nothing. It doesn't boot at all.
Please, can you help me with this.
    Thanks

iOS is for iPhone, iPad not for Mac. So what upgrade are you referring to?

  • My MacBook Pro has booting Problems, Light keeps on Blinking. What to do?

My MACBOOK PRO (Early 2011) is having booting problems. It doesnt want to be shut off. If I do shut it off it would take an hour for it to boot. The light keeps on blinking when i push the on button. After a few times of pushing the button and the blinking light the light keeps steady and the MACBOOK PRO seems to be turning on . A Whirring noise/ sound can be heard. I then turn it off and push the ON Button again and the MACBOOK PRO finally boots. The problem repeats again when i turn the unit off.
I already had it checked by APPLE but they said they cannot find anything wrong with it!! Any help will be highly appreciated.

Shut the machine down by holding the power button until the computer is off.
    Release the power button.
Reset the parameter RAM by powering up the machine then holding the key combination:
    <COMMAND> + <OPTION> + p + r   until you hear the restart chime three times
Then perform a SMC Reset by following this procedure from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Lastly,
If you are running 10.5.4 as shown in your details... Boot to the System install disk
and select the language then select the menu item "Utilities > Disk Utilities"
repair permissions and repair the disk using the repair tool

  • MacBook Pro does not boot when 'cold', Windows 7 on the other hand boots without any problem

    Hey everyone,
I have a strange problem with my MacBook Pro mid 2009 13" running OSX Mavericks. For more than a year I have trouble booting my laptop. A 'cold' start (a fresh boot) usually ends with the prohibition sign on a grey back ground (starting in verbose mode results in the error message that the main drive could not be found). So far so strange.
I have Windnows 7 installed as a bootcamp partition. If I start the laptop with Windows booting is no problem and Windows runs smoothly (what a terrible world we live in). If I let the laptop run for let say 10 minutes and restart the laptop Mac OS starts without any problems. (It doesn't work if I immediately restart after windows booted; also reinstalling Mac OS as a clean install from an external medium did not change the problem; disk utility always finds something to repair but neither discpermission repair nor disk repair got rid of the problem).
As an additional comment a WD 500GB Scorbio Blue replaced the original hard drive about a years ago. I had no problems with the hard drive initally and I can't really believe that there is a problem with the hardware, I mean, why does Windows start and Mac OS doesn't?
Thanks for your time and help!
    Marco

This isn't a direct answer to your issue but have you considered installing Wine so you can run the occasional windows app directly in OSX? It's a much more elegant solution IMHO. This avoids restarting all the time with Bootcamp and avoids crashing all the time (and the security risks) with Windows running.

If GTA IV believes the system is under specification even though the computer is powerful enough to run the game with higher settings, the following will fix this problem.
This will work if your problem looks like this: "resource usage 230/60" and you can't change any other setting
    Just follow the steps:
    Step 1: Create a text file named ‘commandline.txt’ (without the " ")
Step 2: Put the following statement inside it:
    i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 (with the -)
    i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0 (with the -)
Step 3: Open the main GTAIV folder (C/ program files (86)/ rockstar games/ GTA IV) and copy the commandline.txt file into it.
Step 4: locate the file "GTAIV.exe" (in GTA main folder)
Right click the file and select Properties
Under the shortcut tab, you will see an area that says Target
Modify the Target adding the command line after the last quotation mark (just add the statement you added in commandline.txt)
    (remember, i5 users: -availablevidmem 18.0 / i7 users: -availablevidmem 22.0)
It should look something like this:
Make sure to add space between " and -"
I hope This helps, although late cx

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
    NOTE:
Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.
