MacBook Doesn't Chime Upon Startup

Hello everyone.
I have an issue that has really stumped me, and I have no earthly idea how to go about fixing it. My MacBook all of a sudden will not chime upon startup. I have no installed a program to silence it, or anything of the kind. The only recent change that I've made that I know of, is I set up Spaces, which I can't imagine is the problem here. All I know is that now when I hit the power button to boot it up, it no longer chimes. Also yes, my MacBook is not muted either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • My Macbook doesn't recognise the startup disk

I started having problems with Yosemite and lion (installed in the same hard drive, different partitions) so i erase all and instal mavericks, the macbook is late 2009 stock but i don't have startup disk, when i install mavericks it tells me that wont boot and it went an error trying to install, so i am able to boot with the alt key but my mac doesn't recognise de boot disk, when i try to select the startup disk on preferences it tells me: "You can’t change the startup disk to the selected disk. The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk.", what i can do, i can boot with the alt key but it doesn't boot automatically.

If you erase a drive, then in order to install Lion or later you must first install Snow Leopard 10.6.8. You can install Snow Leopard using the installer discs that came with your computer when it was new. You can then update the version of Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by downloading the combo updater.

  • Macbook doesn't load on startup-Annoying.

When I turn on the macbook it stays on the grey screen and never loads. This has been happening more, even when I hold down option on start up it doesn't load sometimes. I have had problems with safari freezing and even force quit wouldn't work so I have had to manually shut down the computer. When I try to start it back up that is when it doesn't load. But the safari problem has gotten much better and doesn't freeze much anymore, but today on start up it stayed at grey screen. This is a annoying problem and please help! Thanks.

I ran the disk utility and it said that the the volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok. What is the
purpose of running off the install disk?
    Because earlier you said:
Well I did the disk utility, and the permissions worked fine, but on disk it froze and I had to restart.
    and then:
I tried running the mac os x install disk and it wouldn't even run on that...
So, it looked like you couldn't run the disk verify. However, if you were able to verify the startup disk using Apple's Disk Utility you don't need to check it again with the Mac OS X Install DVD. However, don't confuse the permissions check with the "Verify Disk" test.
I hope your problems don't reappear, but frankly computers crash for a _reason_ and if you haven't changed anything to fix the problem then it will mostly likely reoccur.
Given what you've told me and assuming that you did run the "Verify Disk" test and not simply the verify permissions, I'd say that you _may_ have a problem either with your hardware or with your Mac OS X installation (not the DVD, I mean the OS image that is installed on the hard drive). To eliminate hardware as the problem you might want to rerun Apple's built-in hardware diagnostics and select the extended testing mode. The extended test can take a good amount of time so I'd start it when your are finished using the MacBook for the day and make certain that you're running on A/C power and not the battery.
Next, Safari shouldn't be crashing. I run Safari for several hours each day and it is _very_ rare for me to have any serious problems with that program (let's say one crash every few months, if even that often). Of course, the frequency of problems may depend highly on what you are doing on the computer and that's why it is important to look for patterns in your work (i.e. nearly every time I do this on this website Safari crashes).
By the way, when Safari crashes do you restart your MacBook? That would probably be a good idea if you are planning to continue to use your MacBook for a significant amount of time (after the crash). Also, do you ever need to do a forced shutdown of your MacBook? What I mean is does your MacBook/mouse/keyboard ever completely "freeze" so that you can't do anything until you hold down on the power button to force a system shutdown? If you _are_ having to do frequent forced shutdowns I'd suggest that on your next restart that you run the Disk Utility to check both your permissions and disk before you begin again to use the computer.
In any case, good luck in the future.

  • Macbook Filefolder with ? upon startup

I have a macbook thats about 3 years old, with OS X and have been having trouble starting it up after a crash. I kept getting a filefolder with a ? in it flashing, i have inserted my reinstall disc and tried the first aid pane, my HD did not show up and all the options besides verify are greyed out. and when i attempt to reinstall the operating system there is nothing to select in the "select destination" step. "continue" is greyed out and i have no course of action besides "go back". i have started it in single user mode, typed "reboot" and this brings me back to the re-install screen.
in doing a little reading on here im guessing i need to replace the HD... correct?

It would appear you have a damaged hard drive. If disk repair software cannot repair it or even acknowledge it then you need a new hard drive.

  • MacBook Air error code page upon startup

If anyone could help, I have no experience or knowledge at all about how to fix my MacBook Air!
Basically I used my laptop as normal last week and upon startup today, a grey error code page appears and I can't get past it, basically my laptop is not usable just now.
The error coding is along the lines of:
Unable to find driver for this platform
    Debugger called: <panic>
Mac OS version: not yet set
    Something about kernel versions?
I've tried to reinstall my OS X mountain lion but it was taking hours and not making a single bit of progress, can anyone suggest anything? I have no idea which version of Mountain Lion I have/had so I just selected the earliest one...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • So upon startup my MacBook screen is white with some verticals stripes - has it gone bellyul? Or is it retrievable?

So upon startup my MacBook screen is white with some verticals stripes - has it gone bellyul? Or is it retrievable?

It's possible that your display or graphic card is damaged. If these vertical stripes appears during all the time the MacBook is turned on, it's hardware-related, so take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller

  • Why does my fairly new MacBook Pro i7 have a checkerboard pattern in red, black and blue upon startup?

Upon startup my MacBook Pro has a checkerboard pattern running down the right side and along the bottom upon startup.  When I turn it on, the screen goes from black to white to blue and then the sign on screen appears with this pattern.  Sometimes it does not appear at all.  Now it is there everytime I turn on the laptop.  I am able to sign on an then it goes to the customary grey textured screen and I have to sign on again.  Then I finally get to the the desktop area. Does anyone out there know what is going on? It is my first Mac.   It has 10.7.3 OS X,  2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7 processor. Memory- 4GB DDR3. Graphics- AMD Radeon 6750 M and Intel HD 3000 graphics.  Below, a downloaded an image. The white stripes actually are baby blue and white checkers. Please help!

I am also getting the same problem, even i am not be able to login. below is the picture. I sent same picture to Apple authorised service centre but they are not responding and even not answarring my phone call.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

  • Macbook crashes upon startup

Hllo, my MacBook crashes during booting the startup phase. I've tried different solutions that i read about on various forums, such as using the disc utility services, but none of Them helps. my Mac hd is inaktive and cannot repair it, the reinstalling of the os x maverick wont start and so on. Though i tried to use an installation dvd with an older version of os x and it wouldn't start indtaling, but when i opened the DU there it could activate my hd an i could see the files on the disc in the disc image, but when i tried to restart the computer from the active hd it would crash again. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks in advance

She could have a bad hard drive. There have been certain model drives in MacBooks failing recently.

  • My Mac Pro doesn't chime every time at startup

I've heard this is not a good sign, but the kid on the phone at Apple says he can connect it to no known problem. My computer chimes at startup after a PRAM reset and never again after that. Does anyone feel comfortable or uncomfortable with this acceptance?

Uh-oh. I returned from a trip to find my Mac did not chime on powering up the other day. Just now it didn't wake from sleep after dinner. It finally restarted after I held the power button for a while, but again no chime, although I do have the white apple/grey screen that you're talking about.
    It's not looking good.
Verify Disk found no issues. I was kind of hoping it was from the recent update with the Mac App Store, somethign that would be fixed with the next update.
Looks like it could be a hardware issue even though this thing is just 21 months old.

  • MacBook Doesn't Play Startup Sound

Hey guys, for some reason, my Mac doesn't play a startup sound when ever its booting up and the volume is on max. Any ideas as to what might cause this?
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion)

Had this same thing after the 10.7.3 update.
Try turning the computer off for a time, 10 minutes to whatever number of hours.
Then when you turn it back on hold down the Option key and when the boot menu screen come up select your Macintosh HD to boot from. Once booted to the OS go into Sys Pref, Start Up Disk and select the Macintosh HD and Restart.
Also I have noticed that the startup, Boot POST (Power On Self Test) sound is of a lower volume then it was before the 10.7.3 update. No matter what the volume is set to in the OS. Apple trying to get rid of that obnoxious sound so people will actually reboot their computer more often.

  • No audio output from my MacBook, but still chime sounds upon loading !

    Hi Guys,
Basically my Mac all of a sudden started bugging out loading real slow, Generally lagging. So I held the the power button down for ten seconds for an emergency reboot. When everything loaded up again I couldn't get any sound from my Mac being no bleeps when when I'd toggle with the volume or any sound when listening to iTunes. HOWEVER.. The chime upon loading when turning on the Mac works and when I open up one of my projects in Logic Pro X the sound works in relation to playing the music I've worked on with my project but still if I toggle the volume there's still no sound along with iTunes, Youtube... Everything !
Extremely strange and I'd really appreciate help with this please.
    Kind Regards,

  • InDesign CS 5 keeps crashing upon startup

Hello, my InDesign application keeps crashing upon startup. My other Adobe applications are working fine though. I've tried restarting my macbook pro but it still doesnt work. Do help me.
    Here's the crash report: http://pastebin.com/L0ieryq5

    Wow.
That is...pretty special. It should not be possible for you to get that error message through normal means. (Edit: Added "not.")
As a workaround, drag /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Plug-Ins/InCopyWorkflow/InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin out of the Plug-Ins folder. Some people like to put them in /Applications/Adobe InDesign/CS5/Plug-Outs. This assumes you don't work with InCopy files, as most InDesign users do not.
For every version of InDesign, there are two builds. The regular release build, that everyone uses. And a special Debug Build of InDesign, which is used internally to Adobe, and also by 3rd party C++ plugin developers enhancing InDesign. The Debug build runs much much slower and has a lot of internal consistency checks that are used to ensure that the version of InDesign we all use works properly.
For every plugin, including the internal ones we don't think much about (of which there are hundreds!), they must be built for either the Debug Build or the Release Build, and they are not compatible. This is because there are changes to various data structures in the Debug build.
This error message means you have the InCopyImport plugin from the Debug build. This should not be easy to accomplish. Adobe doesn't make the Debug Build generally available -- in fact, those people who want it have to jump through some rather crazy hoops to get it.
How did you update InDesign? Did you use the Update menu? Did you download the update from adobe.com by hand? DId you get a copy from a colleague in some non-standard way?
I can't really think how this could have happened. And furthermore, how it would happen only to 1 plugin out of the scores that changed in 7.0.4.
    This is quite mysterious.

  • How do I get all users to show on screen upon startup for login?

New MacBook Pro with latest IOS. Yosemite10.10
I got my first MacBook Pro out of the box from the Apple store yesterday...Logged in as an initial admin user...Then I migrated my MacBook Air to it. All three imported users showed. Success!! Then I restarted the MacBook Pro and the startup screen shows only a single login option: The initial admin user login Icon and name that I used on the MacBook Pro just before migrating the other users in from my MacBook Air.
So, I deleted the initial user (I did not need it), so that the other users (already with admin rights) would be the only logical logins that should show upon restart.
Result: The initial "deleted" user shows still, all alone and none of the other users.  So I now log in to this "deleted" user, it is very slow to start before the other logins eventually appear after the this delay.
How do I get my users to show at the login screen upon startup and restart?

Go to Settings > General > Date & Time. Make sure your time zone is correct and turn on Set Automatically if it isn't on already.
