MacBook doesn't do anything

Hello everybody,
My MacBook, which has been doing fine so far has simply stopped working at all. It is off and will not react to trying to start it (pressing the on/of button).
I wasn't using my computer for 4 days not having the charging cable plugged-in. When I picked it up again yesterday it was in the condition described above.
I know the computer's battery is nearly finished, but it usually holds up to 60 minutes under normal usage, so it's not dead yet. I don't remember whether I left the computer charged or uncharged. I'm going into these details, because I've already tried to recharge the battery, but to no avail. I noticed, though, that the indicator lights on the battery's bottom didn't flash, neither during charging, nor after pressing the button next to them. So there seems to be something wrong with the battery.
I have already tried recharging the computer over night as well as an SMC reset, none of that helped.
I own a mid-2007 2.2 GHz 15" MBP running OS 10.7.2 which has been upgraded with a new HD and more RAM. Windows 7 is installed via BootCamp.
I would appreciate any ideas on what might be wrong and how I might solve the issue.
Thanks in advance
Daniel

Also, Thomas A Reed, as the MacBook is way out of warranty, Apple will probably not be very helpful. I might as well consult any Apple repair specialist, but I consider this as a means of last resort.
I hope there is something I can try first. Is there?
Unfortunately, if the machine is totally unresponsive and won't charge, and you've tried Aaron's trick, there's really nothing else to try.  However, note that you don't need a warranty for Apple to be helpful...  that just means you'll have to pay for the repairs.

im trying to instal snow leopard on my macbook. its running tiger 10.4.11 and it meets all the requirements  but it ask me for a restart to begin instalation progres, i restar it and it doesn't happen anything. anyone can help me?

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

My macbook air says I have a software update to install and In order to do that I have to restart it first. After I restart it, it doesn't do anything and I do it over and over and it still doesn't update. Please Help

The order is generally as follows:
    Download the update
    Allow the update to install
The update will force a restart of your computer
So I suspect you are simply misreading the directions regarding the timing of the restart.

Hi, my Macbook doesn't turn on, it just show a white screen and after a while a big question mark blinks but nothing else, cannot click the question mark, cannot do anything. Also it makes a funny noise.  Any suggestions?

Suppose it's a HDD crash. Boot from Install DVD which came with your MacBook(Press C during startup) and open DiskUtility to repair your HDD if it's able to mount.

    Remove "Boom" and test.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Macbook doesn't want to recognize the cd rom

We bought my daughter a macbook before she left for college in September. It has the intel core2duo, 2.16 ghz, and 2 gig of memory. For some reason when she pops in a disk, the macbook doesn't recognize it and doesn't do anything. You can hear it is doing something inside, but not what it usually does when it does recognize the cd ....... and even today, sometimes it will recognize it, sometimes it will not.
    Any suggestions????

I will have to check and see if there is one near her at school. We had to take her back as she is on her college basketball team. I did tell her we may need to have it repaired over her Christmas break, although she will be at school then too! Can you imagine the look she gave me?????
I am really glad I bought the Apple Care!!!
Thank you for everything. It is so good to know that all of you are checking these forums! You have an incredible amount of knowledge!!!!

  • MacBook doesn't charge iPod shuffle

The only way to charge iPod Shuffle is by connecting it via USB port to your computer. So I wonder why on earth my MacBook is not capable to charge it while it is shut down let alone when it is put to sleep! If a battery can be charged in aforementioned situations so should the iPod Shuffle.
where can I report such incompatibility or where can I put a suggestion for Apple people to work it out?

Did you download any programmes like
caffeine to prevent your macbook from sleeping after
    the display has been closed?
No. It gives every indication that it is sleeping normally: pulsing front light, becomes cool to the touch, wakes when lid opened or key pressed, doesn't do anything strange when awakened. I also haven't used pmset to change the sleep setting from default; it pauses before the sleep light pulsates as if it's writing the sleep image to disk.
As a matter of fact, it continues to provide power with two different pads. The cheap inline switch on the pad failed and I had it replaced under warranty. The second unit has the same behavior.

  • Restore doesn't do anything

I just bought an iPod video (30GB) and at first I uploaded all my music and they all appeared to be on the iPod, then when I went to play my songs it would just skip right through each one as if nothing was there. iTunes said the music was there, and looking at the properties through My Computer told me that there was 11 GB of information used on the iPod. So then I decided maybe updating the iPod's software would fix it, so I updated to the most recent version. After that...same problem. So I decided to restore my iPod. I went through the process and that didn't work. It just constantly flashes "Do Not Disconnect" in its black/white bios-like screen. After a while I had decided the restore didn't work so I unplugged it and rebooted it. When I reboot it shows that screen with multiple languages..something like "Restore in iTunes". Well as far as I know iTunes doesn't restore anything, you have to use Updater to restore. So everytime since, whenever I try to restore my iPod it never goes through. After it reboots itself it just goes back to the "Do not disconnect". BTW I have tried restoring while in Disk Mode. No dice. Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end. FYI, I do have an Apple Store a couple of miles from me...if I do need to take it there how long would you guys expect I have to wait to get it back? Would they just give me a new one...(they should)?

That was the option from Utilities in the top menu bar, right?
And you never got the next screen, to select the drive/partition with your TM backups?

You cannot and need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if the article doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.
Changing the rescue email address requires supplying two of the answers. They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Macbook doesn't recognize external display

I am trying to use my tv as an external display. My Intel Macbook doesn't detect my tv as an external display, this is because I am using an unconventional connector (VGA to RCA connector).
Anyways, I am wondering if there is a way to force my laptop to output video over the mini-DVI out port on my computer. I am thinking a utility or something would be able to do it.
    This is my setup:
    mini-DVI out from computer>
mini-DVI to VGA cable from apple>
VGA to RCA(yellow video cable) (from hong-kong)>
AV in of TV (RCA yellow video cable)
I realize that the VGA to RCA makes my computer not detect my tv, I am looking for a work-around.
    Macbook 2.0GHz (White)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You just need the Apple mini-DVI to video adapter. It has both a composite and s-video output.

  • MSI 970a-g46 motherboard starts up but doesn't display anything.

Hello, I'm having problems with a new motherboard I got from Amazon, specifically the 970a-g46. The following are my specs in use with this motherboard:
    CPU: AMD Phenom 2 x4 965
    GPU: nVidia GeForce 560 GTX
Ram: 8gb Kingston HyperX Fury 1866mhz.
    PSU: Corsair 650TX (650 Watts)
Compatability-wise, everything checks out so I wasn't expecting problems at first. All the other parts excluding the ram I've used before. Here's exactly what happens:
I power up the computer after everything is installed and connected. The 4 phase LEDs turn on which tell me the CPU is powered up and working (so I assume). I don't get any beeps or buzzs mainly because I don't see any speaker/buzzer on this board. The monitor blinks and while it is connected to my GPU, it doesn't display anything, it's just a black screen. I can leave it on for a few minutes and I'll still not see anything happen. An important observation here is that my keyboard which has LEDs will turn on after a short period of time in boot-up (with my older set-up that is). This does not happen ever regardless of how long I leave my computer on on this new mobo.
I've gone over and checked/tested numerous things:
    * The PCI-E and ATX cables for the GPU, motherboard and CPU are all connected and secured (I've tried both 4-pin and 8-pin connections for the CPU, neither help).
    * I've tried jumping the CMOS multiple times to no avail.
    * I tested the ram on another computer and it worked just fine on that one.
    * I've tested the motherboard without a GPU and it still does nothing (though I think that's because this motherboard doesnt have its own integrated GPU for some reason).
So far the only possible reasons why my computer is not working is because of my PSU (very unlikely as it's only a year old and it's a Corsair, which I've heard is very reliable in the long-run), GPU (It is quite a few years old but even without the GPU my computer still doesn't go past boot-up), CPU (possible due to its age and how many freaking time I've reseated it (probably around 8 times) so I wouldn't doubt it, but before I put it into this motherboard I did check its pins and they were all there and placed nice and smoothly into the socket.) and finally the motherboard (it's possible that this is just a defected motherboard and giving me a super hard time which would be a first in all the years I"ve spent computer building).
The best case scenario of course is me giving some kind of oversight to how I transferred over the parts and connectors. I might've missed something obvious to please any advice/insight on how I can solve this problem would be greatly appreciated
EDIT: Some other things I did but forgot to mention:
    * Checked ground nut things and ensured they matched the specifications of the motherboard ATX; only 6 are under the board and each one is aligned up with the holes on the board as designed.
    * Tried booting up without powering the CPU. Only one phase LED light came on, still the same problem (for an obvious reason this time now).
    * Re-seated GPU multiple times, re-connected cables multiple times.
What I have NOT done is re-seat the CPU because I am almost out of acetone so I would need to get another supply of that which won't be until tomorrow. I also have not re-seated everything back on my older motherboard to check if it still works. Tomorrow I'll most likely do that and if I find that the old motherboard works flawlessly then that tells me that the new motherboard I got is either defected or there's some compatability issue I"m missed out on.
EDIT 2: Just found a speaker and plugged it into the motherboard. Booted it up and I got no beeps whatsoever. So this mobo is giving me no video activity (there is a signal it's just blank), and no beeps from the motherboard. I have no idea what that could mean at this point.
EDIT 3: I decided to test a few things with the new speaker I just got. First I removed ram and tried running, I got 3 beeps which I assume is the beep sequence of faulty/no ram. Removed the power to CPU and the GPU itself individually, gave no beeps this time.

What's the serial number of your MB? Needed to determine what BIOS may be on the MB. Exactly which version of the CPU is it? There were several different 965 CPUs and they required different BIOS versions, 1.2, 1.9,2.2 depending on which CPU you actually have.
Also another problem may be that native memory supported by your CPU is DDR3-1333, not 1866
None of the supported CPUs have integrated graphics, any MB graphics would be in the chipset, not CPU. Examples would be 785G, 880G
Thank you very much rhradacut! The problem was that the mobo for whatever reason was forcing 1866mhz on my CPU when it only supported up to 1600mhz. I had to install a spare ddr3 module to downclock it so that I could access the BIOS and manually set the DRAM timing to 1600mhz for it to work. That's a very strange problem that I figured would've been auto-resolved by the hardware, and would also be a big problem if I didn't have any spare DDR3 ram to work with.
Once again thanks for helping out on solving my problem.

Thanks for these suggestions: I have tried safe mode re-starts (both "verbose" and simple "shift" + power) to no avail.  I get the error message "disk0s2: media is not present".  Following this I inserted the installation disc and from there ran disc utility.  The "Verify Disk" indicated an error " invalid sibling link" which it could not repair.
I also tried to completely re-format/erase the disk, but again got an error message "disk object invalid or unable to serialize".
Any ideas of what could be causing this or the best solution?  I fear I am fast running out of options.
